  • How to make a Celtic Cleaver Knife with easy Etched Blade and Spine. This is an easy DIY knife making project. We started with a waterjet cut knife blank. These blanks are available on DIYeasycrafts.com The knife was designed with a Celtic pattern etched into the blade and a very detailed rope etching on the spine. Self adhesive vinyl decals were cut using a craft cutting machine and then the Celtic designs were etched into the high carbon steel using a very simple process and a 12 volt battery charger.
    This is an Easy DIY knife making project the blade etching techniques can also be used on a variety of other knife making projects.
    Check out this link to order the 1095 high carbon knife blank which we used to create this Celtic Cleaver www.diyeasycrafts.com/diy-knif...

    Hardening just the blade edge bevel region is called "decremental hardening" and it can have a smooth gradient in hardness or, for the older type called "through hardening", a sudden step in hardness at the joint of edge and back. Face-hardened battleship side armor was of these forms, depending on the armor type and time period of the ship from 1891 through just after WWII.

    • @DIYeasycrafts
      @DIYeasycrafts  6 років тому +1

      Thank you.. Excellent choice. For a first knife you may want to try the skinner. The Drop point is a big heavy blade and requires a decent amount of grinding.

    • @SheldonHerringWexler
      @SheldonHerringWexler 6 років тому

      DIYeasycrafts You're totally right. Better to start off small and work my way up. I'll probably do that and get the Skinner for my first knife then later on when I get my skills up get the drop point. I'll be buying the blanks soon. Love watching your videos. Keep it up!!!

    great work, I wish I had the Skill and ability to build one just like it. being a 100% disabled veteran with 16 years service, as well as having lost four-fingers on my left hand, and severe burns on my legs make owning such fine blades, axes and especially Damascus knives. I don't have the dexterity I once had with my hands, and due to the skin grafts/burn scar's inability to handle high temperatures very well at all, would really make it hard to hard to build this knife, which is really too bad. and as a veteran, we don't get paid nearly enough to purchase anything more than a very cheap "worthless" knife, which is sad! oh well...

    • @DIYeasycrafts
      @DIYeasycrafts  6 років тому +2

      #1 Thank you for your service. Im always more than happy to provide discount to our vetrans. Just pvt msg me with proof of service and Im sure we will be able to work something out.

    • @garygraham6895
      @garygraham6895 6 років тому +1

      Thank you for your offer! Proof of service is easy... Just an emailed copy of one of my DD-214's covers that. but the hard part, Money. Sadly Money is extremely tight for this whole year (it was a very cold winter and costly winter here in Wisconsin) which will greatly limit the number of written product reviews I'll do this year as well on weaponeer.net (I own it, or maybe it owns me lol.) Question: Have you ever considered building ROCKER KNIVES? They are extremely useful with a half-circle like "blade shape" and a comfortable wood handle on the top. Some people like them just for chopping Vegetables, but partial hand Amputee's, and stroke victims and others who have a hard time using a fork and knife at the same time, (for one reason or another). after the injury to my hand, I started using them, and they are a great tool. Heck, I even use mine, (which is fairly small) to cut up Pizza slices, or even Steak (when I was able to afford one) lol. I think it would be a great DIY project, especially if it was made from Damascus steel. Just a Thought... lol

      Absolutely, lead time is about 4 wks. I think walnut might look nice for scales. Also let me know if you want the same design.

    You really should be careful etching with a sodium chloride solution, you might produce harmful amounts of chlorine gas by electrolysis (depends on your anode and cathode material.) You most certainly get hydrogen gas, which is highly flammable. I wouldn't recommend doing this indoors without a fumehood.
    Using gloves is also advised as the electrolysis produces harmful and possibly corrosive compounds such as ferric chloride or sodium hydroxide.
    You might want to use a different salt without chloride or just an acid for etching. The chemistry totally depends on your electrodes and power supply. It's not certain which gasses form when your anode and cathode are so close together (chlorine might just react with your metal.)
