Knife Spine Metal Etching with salt water and a 12 volt battery charger
Вставка
- Опубліковано 31 січ 2018
- Knife Spine Metal Etching with salt water and a 12 volt battery charger. We use a craft vinyl cutting machine to cut out the self adhesive vinyl stencils for the metal etching. This how-to video details how the art is created and or imported into the Cameo Silhouette program and then cut into very detailed stencils. We then use a 12 volt automotive battery charted and a little salt water to etch all areas not protected or covered by the vinyl. The knife spine was etched with a 3d chain links but knife makers can use the same technique can be used to etch almost any pattern.
These knife blanks are available for sale on www.diyeasycrafts.com
Check out this link to order the same 3/16 thick, 1095 high carbon steel knife blank used to create the cleaver used on this video. www.diyeasycraf...

Excellent video.....very well put together and your explanations for what you are doing make it very easy to follow and understand. I wish all DIY's were as informative and well made. No idea why anyone would thumb this video down. Fantastic job and Thanks for sharing!
I get at least one thumbs down on every single video. Who knows might even be the same guy LOL. Im not a professional and make no claims. Just haring what I do and how i do it. Also having a lot of fun experimenting . Thanks for the support
Really nice work. I collect knives and am contemplating whether to get into knife making itself. Problem is I have far too many hobbies already! Either way I have saved this video just in case.
I'm looking forward to watching your other videos. Well done!
I'm going to look at your newest etching videos, but this is so cool! I just love it! I guess you have to learn how to draw in cad basically first to use the etcher software, but I'm going to check into it. Thank you for detailed process. Hopefully you have links to buy stencil maker etc.
Thank you so much 😀
Outstanding work mate.
Thank you! Cheers!
Nice work! Thanks
Glad you liked it!
just found your videos a few days ago and id say you have some great info and are a big help on so many things ive been curious to try
Glad to hear it!
That's really cool! Takes patience that's for sure.
You got that right!
Looks awesome my man. Yah you're right it does enhance the knife. That little detail makes the knife pop!!!
Salt water etch! Never seen that before. Very cool.
Fantastic! Just getting started and your videos are inspiring! Thank you
Super late to this video but,if you need clear transfer paper you can buy clear kitchen contact paper from the dollar store! It's a bit more sticky than branded transfer paper, so you kind of have to stick it to your shirt once... but it's CHEAP and plentiful!
Love your work!
Another viewer already turned me on to contact paper. Check out any of my newer etching videos. Great idea and I really appreciate the feedback
@@DIYeasycrafts oh my bad, cheers mate! Keep up the great work!
this video is great.. i just bought a silhouette curio and have spend hours trying to figure it out.. i want to etch my blades , similar to you..but have my own ideas.. this video has been far more help than silhouette...thanks
Thank you and best of luck with your etching. Join us on facebook group

and be sure to post images of your etching
Great video
Man, that has a 3-D look... great job!
Neato! I wish there was a simpler way, but that's cool.
Nice job, very cool addition to any blade. Thanks for sharing !!
Here I am, still drawing by hand and painting my projects. Wish I were technically inclined.
Muy lindo trabajo. Pero qué proceso utilizas para que no se oxide una vez terminado ?
Excellent and great descriptive, informative video!
Tq v nice
This was beautiful. Great video.
very good way. Thanks for the idea
thanks your teach
Great video! When I first heard your voice, Woody Allen came to mind. Hope that doesn’t offend you, not my intention. Really enjoyed this video. 🙏🏻Thank-you....
good job
Thank you! Cheers!
If you export the file as an EPS there will be no need to have cameo trace it. All your linework will remain perfect because an eps is vector art. I use the cameo all the time to cut vinyl from Illustrator and Corel Draw works the same way. EPS should work perfect.
Thank you!! that will make a huge difference in quality. Will give it a try
Perfect work 👏
Gorgeous. One day I’ll be able to afford that fancy software etc
You do not need the graphics program. You could just do an internet search for free black and white clip art and import that directly into the Cameo program. Or you could forget the computer completely and hand cut a design. I did that on the stars for patriotic knife spine etching
DIYeasycrafts oh wow!! I will have to check that out. Thanks for your reply.... subbed for sure
Have a look at the silhouette portrait. it´s the cheaper version of the cameo but still works like a charm on small projects. The silhouette studio software is free for the basic version and you can replace corel draw by inkscape f.E., free too.
if you ignore the ridiculous priced original blades and buy some CB09 blade holders from china you get away with not that too big of a hole in your wallet.
Inkscape its free and powerful
Markus_B hell yeah, nice. Thank you for the info...appreciate it
That looks great....too bad I'd never figure out out that software in a million years. You should sell the pre-printed decals on your website to us computer challenged folks.
I could cut you up some but you would have to weed and transfer to the transfer film. That part would be way to tie consuming.
Where did you get that fancy printer, and how much can one expect to pay for one?
I would pay for a custom label for my knives. How do I contact you. I will buy a bunch of the same style. Thank You JB
@@johnbiernacki2367
I would like to know as well. I would buy a bunch if the chain ones!
You can also use Inkscape it's free to use its great for logos and the silhouettes of knives for cutting it out
Wow, Silhouette Cameo? Fiskars paper/vinyl cutter? Fussiness over the type of vinyl used? You and I are of like mind. I loved the precision demonstrated: beautiful knife.
Do you also do smithing videos as GS tongs?? You sound just like him ...
Nope not me
Very cool .
Awesome job
Man I have been using 9volt batteries like a sucker...
Thank you, the comment from Dax about exporting to EPS file will work, give it a go
I tried exporting from Corel draw as an EPS file and it did not work.
You mean it wouldn't even export the EPS or it did export but then your plotter did recognise it?
You can export to SVG too and its ready to cut!
This might help
"How to Export a SVG file in CorelDraw to bring into the Silhouette"
ua-cam.com/video/YRJxn1e5W64/v-deo.html
Either way your technique still looks amazing, Thank you for sharing
Does anyone know how small the silhouette 2 can cut as I want to make very small Japanese characters and I am unsure if it will cut very small sizes on vinyl, any info or help is appreciated.
Very helpful!! Thank you!
Some of the first dialogue saying it's easy. It perhaps is if you have the software and hardware to make it happen, which most will not.
It does look amazing, though.
I hate it when a video is like yeah awesome so easy!......... if you have a £400 machine plus everything else it needs
Old post, but you can now get a great vinyl cutter "cricut joy" fir about $160 at walmart.
Dude you should sell those stencils, you’d make a lot of money. You already have the software, printer, materials and know how. I’d definitely buy them premade from you. I just don’t have the time or money to invest in all that extra equipment for a spine engraving. But I’d love to buy some stencils from you 👍
No problem. Will post them on my ETSY online store. www.etsy.com/shop/DIYeasycrafts?ref=l2-shopheader-name
Noting there about stencils in the link, @@DIYeasycrafts
@@DIYeasycrafts no stencils on this site
Awesome!
Great video!
Thank you so much for showing us all how you did that amazing etching on your blades.
Will a Cricut machine do the same as your Cameo machine?
Hmmm would this process strip chrome off metal
That looks phenomenal! I'm making a commemorative knife for a friends wedding and i was planning on filing the year onto the spine but now i'm thinking etching a chain link of hearts would really take things up a level.
Just one question, what have you found to be the correct sizing for the gaps between the links?
Its not so much the gap its just the size of the inside pc. For example inside of chain. Solid hearts would be easy
DIYeasycrafts thanks for the response. Solid hearts would look cool but after seeing how awesome your links look, i want to deliver something that looks that awesome as well!!! I guess i'm in for some ol fashioned trial and error
Let me know if you need a hand. Love to see photo of finished product
I love your knife etchings. Would you be willing to sell a digital copy of your Cameo patterns?
what happens if you bump up to 5 amps?
Does this etching work on S35vn blades or Titanium handles ? Also where could I buy some designs already on transfer film. Just so I can try this. I just got into anodizing folding knives. Thank you
I have only used it on 1095 so you would just have to try it out on some scrap matertial. I can print print out the designs on vinyl but if you want we to weed out each and put on transfer film its going to get expensive. Just time consuming LOL
DIYeasycrafts I understand. If it worked I’d think about ordering maybe 10 designs at once if it saved money. I’ll have to try the etching first. Thank you
Awsome
🔥🔥🔥

Courios if you could tell me what exact vinyl or silhouette you use? Thanks
I use the silhouette brand by the roll
@@DIYeasycrafts thanks
Good morning, i looked on your website for more information on the vinyl aspect of your decorative spines, but im not seeing what materials i need to order to do this. I have been doing file work on my blades, but nothing as beautiful as you do. Can you point me in the right direction as to where to order the vinyl sheets? Love your videos, great work
I buy the vinyl at local Michaels art supply and use a Cameo Silhouette craft cutting machine to cut out the designs. I few people have asked if I could sell the per cut spine stencils. Will add them to web site . (hopefully over the wk end). Thanks
Awesome idea, cause i would love to purchase a few different designs
I hate you lol. I've done custom etching on knives but never thought to do the spine. Please tell me you sell these vinyls/stencils!
I wish I could get my vinyl cutting to cut that small. What brand of vinyl do you use?
I use the Sillhouette brand on the roll. Have tried other brands but they do not work as well. For the real small stuff i also bought the better blade
So silhouette black vinyl ? And what is the better blade?
Where can I buy your knife?
www.bergknifemaking.com
What Corel Draw program are you using?
I use Corel 8 but any graphic art program that allows you to draw what you want and output a jpg will work fine
Awesome! Do you or would you make these to sell? I'm definitely interested! Great video!
I can print out a variety of spine etching designs. I do not sell the 3D chain but do have a nautical Chain, Rope, Basket weave, stars. You can order from www.diyeasycrafts.com/diy-knife-spine-file-work.html
I ordered a set, do you plan on adding stars or any other designs soon?
Looks great, can you get shocked from the battery charger? I've always been careful when jump starting or charging a vehicle battery, I guess because of all the Hollywood movies where they torture people with a charger. Looks to me though from watching this, it won't shock me? Thanks.
Yes you can get shocked. Mine is only set at 2 amps but basically never touch both leads at the same time
great videos you make ..i am doing lots of research about etching and engraving...i am quite concerned for your health and the dangers that you are risking ...the salt converts to chlorine ,which is heavier than air .It will also slowly disolve internal organs if you breath it ..just one of its many dangers ...also , using a 12 volt battery instead of a 6 volt changes the ions in your metal ...releasing dangerous compounds all over your work bench ...you need to let your viewers know these very fatal by products ...however great work
My mom says we have CorelDraw so can you send some of your CorelDraw files that we can use? Thank You
What design are you looking for
Why are you doing all of this work? Just use a photographic resist.
Wtf were you saying from 5:30 to 5:50 😂
Guess not.. 😒
