  • How to easily metal etch Flames on a knife blade with an automotive battery charger. Check out this short how-to video that shows step by step instructions on how to create beautiful two-tone etched flames on knife blades. Perfect for knife making. This is a simple process does not require any acids. Any design can be drawn onto a transfer film and then cut out with a razor. A 12 volt battery charger was used to etch the exposed areas. Knife makers can use this process to enhance or add details onto almost any knife blade or etch the entire blade.

    Thank you soooo much for this video!!
    Finally...someone that explains EVERYTHING with just using sticky vinyl, drawing and an exacto knife!!
    This is EXACTLY the information I needed!
    Thank you, you're a godsend!

    That's good work that, mate. You're right. Time consuming but not too difficult. I might have a go.

    Very nice. I've been pondering how to make a somewhat detailed brand to burn a logo into woodworking projects. I think with 10 or more etches this method could work. Thanks for the inspiration!

    Any recommendations for a battery charger that would work with this technique. Seems a lot of the new ones have a safety feature where they will only work when attached to a battery.

      Yeah I found that out. My charger is old so no problem. My friend had to rewire his to bypass the breaker. Will try to put together a video on what he did

      @@DIYeasycrafts that would be awesome if you could! I've done this by popping alligator clips on an old DC charger block, but it's not enough juice for a nice, deep finish.

      Believe me if I can do it anyone can! Actually had a lot of fun with this knife. Im currently building a 2x72 inch belt sander and having a bunch of knife blanks waterjet cut. Both should bring the knife builds to a higher level.

      I have a clear transfer film and also a white vinyl. Got both at Michaels Art Supply. The clear is nice because you can trace a design but the white is thicker and hold up better to heat from etching.

      sticker vinyl, if your wife has a cricut etc, you can make any design you want and won't have to cut pattern with a knife.

    I think you said you did this prior to tempering the blade. Would it work as well on an already finished blade (VG-10 steel)?
    I'm thinking about etching a kitchen knife primarily so that cut food is less likely to stick to the side of the blade. Is the etching deep enough to feel with your finger or fingernail?
    Thanks!

    • @DIYeasycrafts
      @DIYeasycrafts  6 років тому

      Should work on any non coated blade. Etching can be very deep, depends on time of etch. I think the etched areas might actually help food to adhere to it

    • @b-radg916
      @b-radg916 6 років тому

      Thanks. I assume you're thinking it might make foods adhere because of the roughness of the etched metal "grabbing" the food? Do you know of a way to vary the roughness of the etch (amount of salt, watts or amps)?

    • @DIYeasycrafts
      @DIYeasycrafts  6 років тому

      Just duration. Etch one area for 60 sec for a deep etch and others for 30sec.
