I work for a bank in operating credit risk. That moment at 18:07 where it went from "SVB is an interesting thing!" to "oh shit I need to talk to the business" was my whole day.
Hey some things on SVB 1 FDIC covers $250k per person per account type. It is possible to structure accounts and titles to have about $3.25M per person per institution. 2. Even though the insurance is $250k, more likely than not, another bank will buy the assets and the client base will still have their assets. 3. Even if another bank doesn’t buy SVB assets, as long as the loans issued by SVB are still good and aren’t in default, the clients with cash over the insurance bank will get their money bank. Bank insolvency works differently than most other institutions
Though i'm sure things get really complicated if they were investing some of that money in crypto/FTX... (waiting for timestamp guy to watch the whole thing haven't seen this segment yet though)

2:08:38 This is why I got an office printer for my house. It’s an ecotank the ink comes in squeeze bottles, and gets poured directly into a clear tank in the printer, so you see exactly how much ink you have left. It came with two bottles of black and two bottles of each color. Four years later, we still have not run out of ink. Well worth the $400 up front costs.
Which one do you have? Like model number? I am using an old one since 2013 and have spend less than 30€ in total on ink because it hadn't the god damn chip yet. I am afraid of the day it breaks though.
We (my mom and I) got a $300 laser printer (Canon Color ImageCLASS MF644Cdw) and are still on the starter cartridges many years later. Unlike ink there's no concern about toner drying out since it is by definition a dry powder (laser printers deposit a small amount of toner powder on a page then melt it with a laser). Laser printers are almost always business class products so they tend to be much better about the software (still not perfect but I've never had it tell me I can't print black and white because I'm out of F***ing magenta ink).

3:07:30 Luke, I think you're right on the money with that story - accidentally getting lost, and spur-of-the-moment stuff like that, is often memorable. I remember a time around 1991 when my late wife (g/f at the time) and I were driving north from Kiama to Sydney, and decided to find a different way. So we agreed that we would drive south to either the next moderately-sized town, or the next major intersection, turn west...then do the same again, turning north, effectively heading back to Sydney what we thought would be one country block to the west of our usual route through Mt Ousley. This being the days before GPS, and being an unplanned jaunt, we had no map or road atlas, and probably missed a couple of turns that looked too small to actually go all the way through. And the 2.5 hour drive turned into a _12 hour endurance rally._ But it was a really great day, warm and sunny the whole time, and by the end we were definitely exhausted but happy, with a head full of memories together. 👍

There would have been MANY explanations needed, at best.
Luke’s reaction to Linus admitting to saying the “hard r” is priceless. For the resin coasters: Make molds of the coaster shape. Use a vacuum chamber to degas the resin. Pour in multiple parts - get a certain weight of resin for each pour to manage consistency. Do the first pour to make the base for the CPU. Once that's hardened put the CPU in and do a second pour. If you want really consistent centering of the CPU dies and you have a lot of the same ones, then you can do three pours with the second one going partway up the CPU and hold the CPU in position with a centering guide that rests on the mold. Then do a final pour to get your final thickness. For warping, sand and flatten after everything has cured (so make some extra material for this step). Alternatively you can machine the faces and edges, but that'll make the coasters pretty expensive. It's a messy stinky process and one that is hard to scale up industrially because of the sticky nature of resin. But you can make some pretty cool stuff with it.

the problem with windows search is that microsoft in their infinite wisdom decided to only index a few of your user folders by default, a couple thousand files. the good thing is that fixing windows search is very easy, in windows 11 (10 is similar) go to settings -> privacy and security -> searching windows. under the "find my files" dropdown either chose "enhanced" to index all files on your computer, or click the "customize search locations" option under classic to chose what folders to index. When I did this the first time i chose the first option and i wouldn't recommend it, I've now got 1.7M files indexed and search is pretty slow but it always find what i search for. what you should do is take the second option and only index the folders that matters to you, that way search will be able to find your files and do it quickly.
Microsoft still has a ton of money, if they can't develop a search engine in-house....BUY A SEARCH ENGINE COMPANY!!! See Microsoft, I fixed it. Please send the check to my email address. Thank you 😊
I used to work at the FDIC a couple years ago and can provide a bit of insight here. Taking ownership of the bank and paying out deposits is a last resort because 1, it weakens the deposit insurance fund and 2, because accountholders over the insurance limit are harmed. The priority of the agency in the event of a bank failure is to either develop of plan to remain solvent, which is past due to SVB, or source other banks to acquire the assets. The latter isn't unlikely here as seen with wamu in the 2008 crisis and in that case accountholders would retain the full amount of their deposits.

For anyone confused: 18:07 is after the moment is entirely over, it actually starts around 17:28.
It’s the utter look of bewilderment on Luke’s face that gets me every time 😂😂😂😂
Hey some things on SVB
1 FDIC covers $250k per person per account type.

Seriously laser printer is where it is at.
I have a Brother printer with ink tanks. The savings for not having to buy outrageously priced cartridges more than pay for itself.

For the resin coasters:
Make molds of the coaster shape.
I hope the timestamp guy is okay

the problem with windows search is that microsoft in their infinite wisdom decided to only index a few of your user folders by default, a couple thousand files. the good thing is that fixing windows search is very easy, in windows 11 (10 is similar) go to settings -> privacy and security -> searching windows. under the "find my files" dropdown either chose "enhanced" to index all files on your computer, or click the "customize search locations" option under classic to chose what folders to index.
Thank you 😊
1:24:19 is the start of what your looking for
I learned a thing today. Thank you Linus for teaching me that a HARD R is the same as the N word and not the R word, I was right there with you.
