35:55 A huge part is that because Twitter is in California, a lot of those non-competes are unenforceable. So as long as ex-Twitter employees didn't take a copy of Twitters code, but instead just rewrote the same stuff again, they would probably be in the clear legally for the most part. Of course, seems Twitter is taking offense to this since they did [edit: threaten to] sue Meta over Threads now.
@@espen2729 It's not a big difference to my statement that Twitter seems to have taken some offense, but my statement was still incorrect, so thanks for the correction.

The same thing as the French law already exists in Sweden, and goes further as it is less restricted. And not only that, there is now a proposed extension to it where even people who merely associate with suspects can be "monitored" in this way. The honesty about the Lime Day shipping thing is probably the best thing you could do. The people it actually affects are going to be your strongest supporters, so I suspect they won't have an issue. On the timeframe for Threads, Facebook designed two of the key tools to pull it together. Cassandra and GraphQL along with the infrastructure, resources and developers with experience in the space.
The whole credit conversation is why financial literacy needs to a basic and mandatory part of your high school education, its absurd how many people just dont know how money in general works. Its not a bad thing, your not the only one im just saying the education system really needs to step up and teach kids stuff theyll need to know throughout there life.
Part of the issue is many high school kids have no idea how to deal with getting checks from a workplace and having monthly expenses even operates, and getting them to pay attention until it actually matters is hard.
@@davidskidmore3442not to mention that 95% of kids aren’t gonna give a shit. Financial literacy courses should be made available for free for actual adults. It’s education and helpful but the as someone who graduated HS very recently nobody is gonna give a shit.
ya im 40 and didnt have a computer in high school or really any easy access to the internet, my parents had bad credit themselves and never taught me about it. My school never taught me about it. I started working at Bloomingdales when I was 18 and they gave you a store credit card. I ruined that thing so fast. Obviously its my fault but I had no idea how important a credit score was to my life, I also wasnt thinking about things like that back then. But I guess that started me on bad habits. Still struggling with bad credit. Even with a good job credit score is so important in USA. Nevermind buying a house, its hard to even rent an apartment with bad credit and a good job. I always wish someone would have taught me about it when I was younger, but I guess I probably wouldnt have listened or cared, but still wish I at least knew how important it was, even if I didnt listen, at least if I knew, one day I would have turned it around when I cared.
@@Im_Ryan I've heard this argument for not teaching financial literacy classes in schools and I disagree wholeheartedly. So what if kids wouldn't care or find it interesting. Most kids already don't care to learn about anything in school so by that logic we should toss out math, science, history, etc. since they don't care. Schools don't teach kids stuff because they care about it or find it interesting. School supposedly teaches subjects that are useful and needed and will make the youth productive members of society.

57:10 Combining shipments to other countries like countries in the EU might cost your customers significant unexpected import taxes. Often there are limits in place under which you don't have to pay import taxes, but above you have to pay them on the whole contents of the shipment. Import taxes are usually calculated on a shipment basis, or if an order is split into different shipments on the order basis. Multiple separate orders in the same shipment will be summed up together, often exceeding the limits.
The times I have gotten shipments from LTT it has been inspected by customs and the courier wants £12 for the courtesy of charging me VAT (again) and import duty.

Agree with Luke. Rent the space downtown for crazy money, never sell it. And buy cheap close by land and start building. It will be worth a LOT more in some decades because you are not only investing on the growth of the company, but heavily in real state as well. So you can keep buying around and make it not worthless and maybe even a TECH SUSTAINABLE CITY FOR PEOPLE! Where you don't need a 40 minutes car travel to get everywhere.
The only free product I've used that took away the free tier was Lastpass. The communication around the change gave me bad vibes so I chose to close my account and go with another paid password manager. Given what happened a few months later, I'm super glad I did.
40:00 Key point about the anonymity here, there have been Thread users that have had their Facebook linked with their Threads accoint (despite not having Facebook linked with their Instagram account). Or if they did under a different name, somehow, Facebook linked their ACTUAL Facebook account instead of their business Facebook account and so on. Guess pros/cons, trolls will have their identity revealed and so will everyone else 😅
facebook, instagram, and now threads seem to cookie info the same way that google and apple do. you sign into the service on one app, and the sign in data is shared across all affiliated apps. you'd have to actively isolate the process to have any real anonymity
@@Adowrath yeah, like some anonymity online is fine. Tho good moderation tools are essential, which a lot of the new (and old tbh) social media sites don't have >.>
I think I would just disable the port in config which is a feature on all L3 switches rather than get a airgap. Its intended for port security as well and it will have no throughput limitations. Plus you can restrict management to a single management port which makes it so you can have a management network (which you should)
On checking IDs for credit cards. When I started working at Disney World out system was super weird where you could use tap to pay or swipe but no chip. Any purchases over $50 would need a signature and we had to check ID. People would get so mad over this. This wasn't even that long ago this was like 2019 it wasn't until COVID that we finally got chip readers because they didn't want us touching cards.
I can think of a way that it could be actual remote airgapping: blowing a fuse. If you have a thing inside the switch that disables use of the port completely until you physically open it and replace the fuse, I can see calling it remote airgapping being meaningfully correct. This doesn't prevent the switch itself being hacked so that it would fake-disable and report to the interface that it was a real disabling, but it does provide a level of extra security.
It sounded to me like the mechanism used here physically unplugged itself like a breaker which is just as good as a fuse but doesn't require paying to replace it (a fuse is a wire designed to burn up in order to break a connection while a breaker just flips a switch). So long as it can't be re-enabled remotely it's a good way to add extra security to the system.
It took a week or two for our pool to clear up and show the final color when my parents built it back in 2002. There is a ton on crap in the pool right now. I never pay attention to advertising. Adverts come on, I switch off, ads go off I switch on. Even if I don’t tune out fully I just watch the count clock nothing else.
@@cujo3357 I use 3 different platforms, Windows, Android and iPad OS. Okay, maybe not so much the Android. By choice I don’t have internet connection outside of home. My primary mobile device is a Droid, I just don’t use its “smart” capabilities. No matter the platform I’m on I just tune out ads. If a Skip button is available I use it otherwise I zone out for a few seconds. Maybe I watch the count down on how long the ads last? But I sure as heck can’t tell you what the advertising was about.
Between UA-cam premium and various ad blockers, I don’t see ads anymore. And when I watch sports on tv I make a conscious effort to avoid anything that is advertised. If it needs to be advertised, it’s likely not a good enough product to warrant word of mouth.
Switch management should always be via a separate infrastructure (network, firewall, management application server) rather than production systems. Then you can just do a standard port shutdown.
On the gross-out policy, I stopped watching Mac Address because they insisted on showing clips of AirPods covered in earwax across multiple videos. Haven’t gone back!
LTT TV should have Disney channel style bumpers. Like “I am Linus, and you are watching the LTT channel” then they trace out the logo with a magic glowing screwdriver with a jingle playing.
I think there are exceptions. One might for example be comfortable with an online support group or forum but not an irl one. I know you're mainly talking about behaving like a human being and that I do agree with.
Why is everyone calling Threads a Twitter competitor when Threads themselves state that they're a Slack competitor? Slack isn't social media, it's a business tool for internal communications.
Regarding Linus' point on "advertiser friendliness vs. censorship": Imagine if your telephone call was interrupted anytime you mentioned something undesriable to your telephone provider. Or if your ISP censored sites or information they deemed undesirable. For most people their ISP or telephone provider is also a private company, yet there are protections in place to prevent those companies from censoring their customers' speech. I think Linus' point is valid for small forums etc. with a couple of tens or hundreds of thousands of users, but once you're the size of a facebook or twitter I think those companies should be treated more like common carriers and less like forums.
No mention of the Fediverse here? They should know better. The move from Meta seems to be to take it over. I'm on a small Lemmy instance and I am legit scared about what it might be done to the server.
The signature on the back of a credit card is supposed to be used to verify the signature required when making a purchase (most CC companies and bank cards have done away with this requirement). It is also used to match the signature on someone identification card (if it has one). It was used a lot back in the 90's but with the increase in other family members being allowed to use cards (spouses and children for example) and the ease at which someone can have their information stolen and a credit card issued to the thief, the reliance on the signature has dwindled significantly...which is why most companies no longer require a signature when making a purchase and stores don't even bother to check them. I use my mothers CC a lot since she has MS, I go out and buy stuff for her all the time and instead of signing my name or forging hers I just signed for purchases with the name "Not [my mothers name]" as a joke. No one ever questions it, but back in the 90's I had to always pay for stuff myself and she would pay me back because they checked it quite often and would refuse to accept it. Now-a-days i don't even have to sign or put in a pin.
Facebook is still a thing with their groups and fanpages though, especially for communities and hobbies...it basically decimates most of forums out there...
It's wild that people think there's something wrong with using a credit card. My entire life, I've only paid with credit when I could, because it came with benefits like an extra year added on to the manufacturer's warranty plus cashback or points, and I always just paid it off at the end of the month so that I never paid any interest at all. It also meant that I had an extra layer of safety to dispute charges if there were ever any issues. It's only ever been an advantage over cash.

A thumbs-up emoji could mean anything from "got it!" to "I agree with everything here." It's ridiculous (as many judges are) to decree that it is a valid signature to a contract.
The articles I've seen have been a bit vague about what's considered normal for this individual. If they've signed other contracts in a similar way then it might make sense to hold them accountable but if they've only used the emoji to mean they've received the draft then it's obviously BS on the judges part. It does sound rather ridiculous but then we don't have all the facts.

As Threads is based on the Fediverse protocol (which is protocol that Mastodon developed), I think most of the time Meta need to to release this app has gone into QA. Because what they basically had to do it create a bridge between the Instagram backend and the new protocol. Also every Instagram User has already an Threads Accounts, the account is just disabled till the person downloads Threads and activates it. Because I activated my account today and I had already 4 Follower request (bc my Instagram is private) from 2 days ago. So they "just" created a bridge, auto-created an account on their Fediverse Instance for every Instagram Account and then build a new frontend around that. If they would open there Fediverse instance, I'm sure you could use it with basically every Fediverse App out there.
I honestly feel like Brother brand printers (especially monochrome laser) are by far the best printers on the market. My mom worked as a hardware tech for a local school board and she would go around and fix computers, printers, run wire etc. She used to have a method of baking printer boards at a certain temperature and time that would fix poor solder connections and then the printer would work again. She said Brother printers seemed to need this less often and other parts of the printer seemed higher quality and more reliable. A place I used to work at got rid of a brother printer and replaced it with a HP printer. It constantly jammed and was nothing but issues since the first day. My mom and I both have Brother printers and nothing has broken on them since they were "outdated" and replaced. Toner cartridges are more expensive than ink but last longer. I also feel that having a printer that works all the time outweighs having more fancy printers. I am excited for the printer comparison video but I know brands can vary greatly based on the individual model. Even if a brand came out above Brother I do not think I'd switch because I've had this overwhelmingly positive experience.
Mom and I went with a Canon laser printer and it's been great for the most part. I have heard plenty of bad things about Canon printers but mostly around their inkjets. I've never owned a Brother brand printer but I've mostly heard good things about them. I do recall hearing that they've gone downhill (their quality has gotten worse) in recent years but don't have any personal experience with them.
@@grn1 Yeah my printer is definitely an older model and so is my Mom's. TBH I think every new product is not as good as an older product of the same brand. @@Yogi_Bear69 I may be in luck when it comes to printer drivers on this one since it works over LAN by default and thus should work even if it never gets any updates. Even if the wireless standards it uses stopped existing the Ethernet cables and network standards/protocols probably won't. So long as they don't send an update that bricks the dang thing but I doubt they would do that since the big businesses that also use these printers would find out and sue them out of existence. Biggest concern is when something does finally break. Also moving it when we finally find a house (market is terrible) is going to be a bit of a pain (it weighs 60 lbs).
Most of their software people are already working from home; the rest of their work mostly has to be done from the office for logistical reasons. Hosts and camerapersons and such all need to be in the same place on something like a set; hardware reviewers need to be where the test benches are. Editors need to be where the multi-gig video files are; while editing remotely is possible, I can't imagine it was a good time.
The 24/7 LTT TV thing is really annoying on mobile, can't tap the channel icon to get to the channel homepage without first selecting a video and tapping the channel name, not the icon.
Luke's comments about age... Too relatable. It sucks being in my 30s, nothing heals anymore and I'm constantly tired, but my blood tests and such are all okay so apparently this is normal...?
yup...wait till ur 40...you wake up 1 day and know instantly the change happened... start riding a bike...them knees and lower back dont like squats...even with perfect form
I started collecting injuries as soon as I hit 30. It's a long slow ride downhill from here, all you can do is maintain yourself to make your determination as slow as possible.
In the US a “mark” can be the signature. An emoji is a mark. This is an old rule from back when literacy rates were low, and one the parties likely could not read a contract. Their lawyer would read the contract to them, and then the person would draw a mark-often a simple “X,” but sometimes something more elaborate-to signify their agreement.
Speaking personally (obviously), I like services like Snapchat not because I want to send spicy pics that I like to believe only last for so long but I can send in the moment pics without having to take a photo that saves in my camera library while sharing an interesting or funny moment with a friend.
i think this was the best thing about snapchat in the earlier days. it still serves that functionality but with all the other bloat added it’s becoming more difficult to justify hanging on.
Most messaging apps with a photo "mode" allow you to either save the photo or not. I don't think Snapchat was unique in that way. Just the receiving end being limited.
Luke must be the most likeable chap on UA-cam. Everything about him says 'decency' to me. The channel is great and the content is outstanding but, Luke stands out from all of it. Just an observation.

Also at a federal level, the NLRB recently issued a memo about non-competes being a violation of labor law.
They threatened to sue. Big difference.
@@espen2729 It's not a big difference to my statement that Twitter seems to have taken some offense, but my statement was still incorrect, so thanks for the correction.

I figure the 24/7 stream is to capture viewership from places such as businesses that want a "set and forget" thing to put on a TV in a business. people claim autoplay is the same but it isnt, it can (and does) send you down weird rabbitholes.
One thing I would like with the LTTV is if you could inject your livestreams like wanshow etc into LTTV when it’s live I’m sure it’s harder than it seems but it would be really cool
it's shouldn't be that difficult to "inject" as any news channel does every day, switching between live and recorded content.

The same thing as the French law already exists in Sweden, and goes further as it is less restricted. And not only that, there is now a proposed extension to it where even people who merely associate with suspects can be "monitored" in this way. It could be as simple as taking a drink with an old friend (who happens to be a suspected criminal) from high school, and you end up having your phone hacked, legally, by the police. It's insane!
There is no way this will ever be used on political or social dissidents. Definitely not. Sweden yes, lol.
I'm curious how it works technically. Are phone manufacturers required to add a backdoor, and if so can you remove it?

The honesty about the Lime Day shipping thing is probably the best thing you could do. The people it actually affects are going to be your strongest supporters, so I suspect they won't have an issue. And, if it is actually an issue where you make more money than expected, I don't doubt those who ordered a lot will get special offers in the future.
On the timeframe for Threads, Facebook designed two of the key tools to pull it together. Cassandra and GraphQL along with the infrastructure, resources and developers with experience in the space.
What’s interesting is to me is that this is the first time I’m realizing you’re totally right that Googles primary business is advertising
@@Im_Ryan- it is available for free. The internet is awesome.
ya im 40 and didnt have a computer in high school or really any easy access to the internet, my parents had bad credit themselves and never taught me about it.

I think I would just disable the port in config which is a feature on all L3 switches rather than get a airgap. Its intended for port security as well and it will have no throughput limitations. Linus worrying about 2 live streams in one channel, while Indian news channels can sometimes go to concurrent 16 live streams on one channel

Edit: for concomitant spelling.
@@Mpdarkguy sorry I ment concurrent.
Eg: youtube.com/@zeenews

Regarding Linus' point on "advertiser friendliness vs. censorship":
Imagine if your telephone call was interrupted anytime you mentioned something undesriable to your telephone provider.
I have legitimately been waiting for years to see Luke’s birds
I can just imagine what goes through Luke’s mind when people say cloud tech. If he does not like air gap ❤
Threads large user base numbers are probably just them automatically creating accounts for existing users of other services.
Like windows 10 numbers being inflated by Microsoft installing it for people whether they wanted it or not.
The Tv Channel idea is actually an awesome idea. Not gonna lie Id love that for a few of the channels i follow when im all caught up.
Goodmorning from Denmark.
Its summer, it's Saturday and I finally have my summer break.
3 weeks off after some very stressful months
Same, except i signed up for a summer semester which i start on Monday, yikes.
I am constantly amazed that ads are still a thing. Granted I use 3 plugins, but I haven't seen ads outside of an App in years.
1:49:30 is about where the "Emojis are legally binding" topic starts
Talk about clickbait. The word "ok" could be legally binding. So can a thumbs up.
@@thewhitefalcon8539The problem is that in this context “thumbs up” is also used as “I confirm I’ve received and seen this message” over sms. So without more context it’s hard to know for sure.
@@saladgreens912you can see the court case yourself, the farmer in question has a history of replying with only an emoji (admittedly it was different emojis), and would show up with a delivery with the agreed upon goods
Where's this week's WAN SHOW?
"Non toxic online multi-player"
Ever heard of Deep Rock Galactic? Toxicity is extremely rare and being called out by fucking everyone. It's a wholesome community overall.
But generally Linus is right
Rock and Stone
Lime day with delivery for international shipping combined would be a treat
It's funny hearing the Canadian perspective about tap payment with phones. I'm in Australia and regularly have customers pay over $5k by tapping their phones. Had a customer tap with an apple watch for $25k which felt a bit weird.
As pointed out phone tap pay is verified and is different from nfs chips in credit cards, which can be easily stolen.
Why would that be weird?

Luke: "There is a solution"

As someone who’s from the early GenZ, I’ll take being called a Geriatric Gen Z if I don’t have to be a part of Threads.
@@InservioLetum Lets not go that far, I'm X/Millennial age group (depending on who you ask) and have no interest in using threads or twitter. I have a twitter solely to get updates on some software products and even then I barely use it.
As someone that lives in the UK (which was in the EU until recently), I am confused why Linus kept saying again and again that he wasn't going to debate how to use a credit card with Europeans and that he wasn't going to talk about it😕
*Dev asks if he should buy a devkit for porting apps*
Linus: No, it's a devkit
Shocked they didn't talk about threads being banned in the European markets.
as far as Japanese CEO's there's also laws in Japan that actually limit CEO pay to a degree (it's worded strange as I remember, where they just can't be "grossly overpaid"), and there's a lot of public shaming involved if the heads of companies make too much. It's definitely a culture thing but also a legal thing. Nintendo's lawyers probably make more than their CEO =x
@@InservioLetumnow how about their rampant xenophobia
About the french law, i'd say it's VERY EASY to fall under the "5 years sentence" thing. I do activism regularly, the simplest non-violent thing can go up to theorically 5 years in prison just because you do it in a group in a planned way.
in the Netherlands where i live, the limit for tap to pay is 50 euro, everything above that needs a pin. no ID is ever needed for purchasing items except for age restricted items, like tobacco and alcohol
Hey Luke, there's a messaging platform that apparently virtually everyone has and it's app and corporation agnostic. I'll have to look into this "email" thing myself because I've lost count of the data harvesting messaging apps I have on my phone...
Regarding Google Ads, it is indeed true that I paid Google to promote my website, investing a substantial amount of money to generate traffic through those ads. However, to my disappointment, the traffic never was there . I became increasingly skeptical when I noticed my bill skyrocketing on multiple occasions, despite the complete absence of any traffic.
Oh my god I forgot I bought a potato. (also got an LTT moonshine water bottle) Here's my potato prompt: Your prompt was: Draw a fresh style potato wearing fedora, pantsuit, lapel, and riding bike. I shouldn't be in charge of my own money this potato was 10.94 after tax. I am a potato....
This is one of the wan shows of all time
Truly an LMG moment.
2:06:10 If you lose your CC, any over value on it is NOT reimbursed, at least with the CC company my sister was part of. She was going to add on to her CC for a Disney trip and they told her not to because if she lost the CC she wouldn't get the overage back.
The company town idea will stick around more and more, till the prices litterly force it to happen.
now you know why companies are buying houses...good investment AND employee manipulation.
you will own nothing and you paycheck will be pointless and without us you starve and die
They ALWAYS fail. And usually in horrible ways. Fordlândia is a cautionary tale that all should heed.
prices dont force this to happen...
the prices get forced...you and i always want to pay less....who wants that price higher AND could exert force/influence to make that happen?
NOT regular people with their 1 or 2 home purchasing power....the prices these days arent from individuals selling or buying.
regular people are competing against those who just want to hide money...from their bank or govt doesnt matter....now you and i compete against someone who doesnt care what it costs cuz hidden at 7% is better than taken away by a corrupt govt.
The funniest thing about the Twitter v Blue Sky v Threads is that since Threads plans on joining ActivityPub (read Mastodon) Network then the battle continues being Mastodon v Twitter because Blue Sky never went global and people are really going in on Threads
Linus casually building the setting for a cult town.
Yep, it's WAN show. 😂
Concerning airgaped: isn't technically any wifi device airgaped? xD
I think the reason nintendo retains so much talent is probably due to there work ethics being probably better then the crunch heavyness of the western world because for example mario odyssey had a Development time of 4 years
But you forget the work culture of japan where overworking is looked as a common thing.
Its not crunch in japan it is just tuesday.
The community of battlebit is actually suprisingly friendly! In the 40 hours I played till now I only encountered one or 2 toxic players. (For the people that dont know it, it is a mp game with proximity voice chat)
the threads user base growing like that, is absolutely DAMNING for humankind. unreal. how this kind of censorious spyware can get a hold at all.
Thanks for mentioning the Iphone vid comments (if there was more than mine). As a creator in a different space, I know how hard it can be to come up with good ideas and how to execute/distribute them. And then as an audience, we always want more and just as good or better than last time for the satisfaction we seek.
Looking forward to more labs videos and more fun stuff like the old scrapyard wars or secret shoppers. I personally am a fan of longer form/multi part videos, where it almost feels like a season of a show or a kind of event of its own.
Try eliminating your Threads account.
Wish it was a 24hr wan got my hopes up with the 24hr stream 😢
It's depressing because end of life and no drivers for new OS do be a thing. I had a really old (compaq era) Canon inkjet printer and it wasn't bad but never got a newer one. I hope it continues to serve you well. I hope I never need to get a new printer of any brand. I will keep a windows 7 computer around just for printing things if I need to.
It seems like the "we are out of office space and cannot afford more" is what working from home was born to solve.
When talking about censorship and social media it isn't a good look to be ignorant of rule 230 and the way it distorts the private/ public dynamic
Linus could milk so many videos over making a company town
That wouldn't be the only thing he'd be milking there, by the sounds of it xD.
Luke must be the most likeable chap on UA-cam. Everything about him says 'decency' to me. The channel is great and the content is outstanding but, Luke stands out from all of it. Just an observation.
these canadians and their hatred of elon musk is unbearable.
hey, we in the uk think elon musk is pretty unbearable
