i sing it with this verse stuck in... When I was a fighting-man, the kettle-drums they beat, The people scattered gold-dust before my horse's feet; But now I am a great king, the people hound my track With poison in my wine-cup, and daggers at my back.
just simply look at the diversity in this scene. a Simple shanty made over a millennium ago perhaps, set in another time with other intentions. Yet we as ONE together, it's shared of one culture and one goal.
Considering the first time I heard this was in The Finest Hours when the CG 36500 was heading out to find the SS Pendleton steel themselves, a drinking song it is not. ua-cam.com/video/MFABCP9Rj9E/v-deo.html

This is a Irish song not English, infact sea chanties were mostly Irish originally called Paddy railroad songs due to the large amount of Irish in the US navy. Even the English element of sea chanties is of people of Irish ancestry.
@@dihydrogenmonoxide7600 of course that's why they're called shanties, but this song is Irish not English as our many shanties or paddy railroad songs.
It be nice if they sang a work song as a work song not like they all got pints in there hand, so close to some authentic recreation. Drunks sing it like drunks i'd rather see them in the open air on old iron sides singing into the wind really showing what those pipes could do!
The men with rockers above their chevrons are chiefs or higher and the ones without but are gold are petty officers that have been in for 12 years or more. Red is less than 12 years.
Imagine if the US Navy started practicing and doing sea shanty's again as part of their training and operation.
Why not ? Tradition by God !!!!!
They should also bring out the kegs of liquor while were underway,CVN 74!!
They should
they would become too powerful
One of my greatest regrets from my time in the navy was not learning shanties
I’d love to see a ship pulling into port with all the sailors singing
Lead over the PA and 5000+ chorus would definitely be a head turner lol.
In june 2023, Norway´s largest sailing ship pulled into port after a year at sea with sailors in all the masts singing this, incredible sight
never seen a guy come in with so much confidence and badassery as the guy at 0:47
Lmao right

I could see myself hoisting sails with the lads while singing this shanty
How perfectly ROUSTING, Joe!! Away haul, away! I love it. Beautiful men - all🧡
Timmy!!!!
I love Courtney's grin when Bill sings: well, what a doubt
Awesome harmony & full of gusto!! Loved it!
Such power! Amazing!
You have a nice and great voice , I understand now the labour like to work, love it
Sounds powerful! But PO1... Revolution and Constitution... loved that the most XD
Every version I've heard pronounces them the same way: 5 syllables each.

Actually shanties date back to at most 200 years ago, they come from the age of the clipper ship
Where are the GIANT MUGS OF BEER?? Their hands are sadly empty!
Strangely, when I read your comment, it came out in my head as lyrics to the song. Now I have to think up the second half.
This is a working song.
Yes, they should be hauling up an anchor...
They all kinda look like they did shots before coming on stage.

Gotta say, it sounds better when everyone singing it is as tipsy as a row boat in hurricane
That type of song is called a " captsain song" when a ship of sail was getting underway.

Actually it was a short drag shanty.
Haul away joe is a short haul
Fantastic ‼️
Amazing.. 👌👌
Way haul away the good ship now is rolling
Be bold, red over gold
Good job Jo
All those beautiful Navy men standing in a row....sigh. Makes me so happy
Ah step aside lads and give The Clancy's and Tommy Makem a crack at this one !!!
GREAT...
Need to bring back the version you unlisted then deleted . . . .

Not quite, don't forget the element which comes from slave work songs.
@@dihydrogenmonoxide7600 of course that's why they're called shanties, but this song is Irish not English as our many shanties or paddy railroad songs.
Awesome job!
Be honest. If you heard this coming from a distance, you would feel at least a little scared.
"Kitty Flannegan", I wonder if she's Irish...
Sea shanties were mostly sung by Irishmen especially in the US, they were called Paddy railroad songs.

It’s good..but the Clancy brothers 👌🏻
it's good, but, they ripped the spirit out of the shanty
Oh look 2 people from the air force are mad they can't sing better.
As an Air Force dude this post is accurate. The navy has so much damn history

As a civilian, I agree too. Ships have been around longer than aeroplanes 😀
this is pure dort compared to the Clancy's
Can someone explain why some chevrons are gold and some are red?
The men with rockers above their chevrons are chiefs or higher and the ones without but are gold are petty officers that have been in for 12 years or more. Red is less than 12 years.
Each strip on their lower arm represents 4 years of service
Why'd that one guy step forward to get pushed in the head?
