The Longest Johns - Haul Away Joe (in the kitchen)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 24 чер 2012
- This video is an example of The Longest Johns singing traditional sea shanties. This one is called Haul Away Joe, version taken from Port Isaac's Fisherman's Friends. We enjoy this one as it has a fair amount of shouting in it. Obviously we couldn't be too loud as it's a kitchen...
The Longest Johns are based in Thornbury, Bristol, and are a folk band specialising in traditional working songs and shanties. (They sometimes do other songs they like too, but don't tell anyone.)

Aw, the Youngest Johns.
100%. Babby Johns. 🥰
I found out this is the first song that they sang. Now this, my friends, is a certified hood classic
*certified*
Just chilling, drinking, singing. That's how it's done. Very nice
Not working?
That's what we're often doing with some friends. Best nights ever! 😃
*Sings the first word*
Me- That's it, I'm subscribing.
Lol
Good to hear shanties sung as they were meant to be sung, thank you lads, sung as they were sung by the old boys who had worked under sail with cargoes, who taught me my basic seamanship on the same waters Drake, Cook and Nelson learned their basic small boat handling skills.
Are you the lad on the boat in the other video of Santiana?
friendly fisherman, nice to see you here
Thanks for the feedback Harry, although there are several versions of Haul Away Joe, and everyone does it differently. That's part of the beauty of shanties; traditionally every ship gave it their own spin! We've done one version, but there are all sorts out there. Quite a few have stuff about Yankees that we didn't bother putting in! Hope you enjoyed our rendition tho :)
The Longest Johns you guys are awesome
This is the best one i have found! You guys are so good
@@neopath5998 I totally agree! The lively pacing and the harmonizing are especially satisfying. The relaxed setting is perfect. What a Great Discovery!
There's no "right way" to do folk music. That's the beauty of it.
When I was just a little lad or so me mother told me,
Way haul away, we'll haul away Joe
That if I did not kiss the girls me lips would grow all moldy
Way haul away, we'll haul away Joe
Away, ho, haul away, we'll haul away together
Way haul away, we'll haul away Joe
Away, ho, haul away, we're bound for better weather
Way haul away, we'll haul away Joe
I used to have a Irish girl but she was fat and lazy
Way haul away, we'll haul away Joe
And now I got a Cornish girl, and she can drive me mazy
Way haul away, we'll haul away Joe
Away, ho, haul away, we'll haul away together
Way haul away, we'll haul away Joe
Away, ho, haul away, we're bound for better weather
Way haul away, we'll haul away Joe
King Louis was the king of France before the revolution
Way haul away, we'll haul away Joe
But then he got his head chopped off. It spoiled his constitution
Way haul away, we'll haul away Joe
Away, ho, haul away, we'll haul away together
Way haul away, we'll haul away Joe
Away, ho, haul away, we're bound for better weather
Way haul away, we'll haul away Joe
Well now can’t you see, the black clouds are gathering
Way haul away, we'll haul away Joe
Well now can’t you see, the storm clouds are gathering
Way haul away, we’ll haul away Joe
Away, ho, haul away, we'll haul away together
Way haul away, we'll haul away Joe
Away, ho, haul away, we're bound for better weather
Way haul away, we'll haul away Joe
Like are you just sitting with your mates one day, and just start singing shanties!?! Fucking awesome, wish me and my friends did this
Hi Joel, cheers for the comment. If we're covering someone else's arrangement, like this one, we just all pick a part and try and pick out that part from the recording we're copying. It often happens that we have more or fewer people than the band in the original version, so we have to tweak our parts a bit, but that generally happens in rehearsal. If it sounds weird, we go over it and work out something that suits our sound better. It helps when you can find a harmony relatively instinctively!
There's something really deep when shanties are sung maybe due to the history or just because it feels real in comparison to music that you hear on the radio I don't know? Really good work enjoying it keep it up!
Camraderie and a deep feeling of brotherhood between the seamen. When all you have is each other, you need to keep your spirits high or else you'll very well go mad from cabin fever and tear each other apart.
For the same reason MF DOOM or or cover touches your soul. Shanties are traditional, but the artists I mentioned are modern. But they sure honesty and humility and a love for their craft. Art, modern or old, lasts provided its honest.
Love the cool time signatures and syncopation of sea shanties, but the: "AWAY *HO!* HAUL AWAY." Really is what sold me on this one.
I like to imagine you all sing the proper shanty every single time you all get together for whatever occasion.
I wish I had friends who were willing to sit around and do this...
-Haul away Joe!
-who's Joe?
-Joe mamma!
-onto the plank you go!
Yes, we actually have our own special version of it. Maybe we'll put it up on UA-cam soon :)
And for nearly 6 years this comment goes unnoticed...
Please do post your version on UA-cam. It's probably just as good if not better then this and all your other work. (Aka great) I wish I could sing as well as any of you.
@@DeDerpyDerp_ They have one it's like 4 years old or so, also available on spotify
The acoustics in my kitchen are nowhere near this good. Although it might also have to do with who's singing.
if you are blind, try to convince yourself that they are inside a ship
@@spongebobsquarepants8403 meh, I do that even when I'm not blind. I actually do a fair bit of sailing so it's not too hard
It's not the kitchen it is those who use it.
Paul McCartney said he used the bathroom for acoustics.
so glad i heard this in Glasgow, just had to come back here
13 years old listening to this on repeat. a while after twas uploaded. I love this song so much better than modern music In General amazing cover and amazing job!!!
Come back and take another listen now, 2 years later
Probably my favourite version of this, cheers chaps !
Take away the "probably".
I'm blown away by the voices.... and I want that kinda kitchen too. 😍
A mighty sound from such a small crew. I have added ye to me list of good shanties.
The acoustics in this room are actually insane!
I didn't realize y'all had been around this long. Glad you're finally starting to see some success though
Wow....so young!!
Honestly, it's fun to see the roots.
Singing this in our choir now, bloody brilliant. Thank you
My shanty group is basically two old guys and me; we're enthusiastic but not particularly musical. I'd love to be able to do the harmony as well as you guys. Well done.
I'd love it to find you guys in my kitchen one evening after work. Would be awesome!
We love mead! Good call :)
ngl this song is ✨catchy✨
i think this is the first video i saw of this band years ago
So I want to sing along but the most timid of your group has the best voice and I can't ruin that. Tell him he's as great as you all are!
I’m back from the future, you guys are doing great and this is one of my favorite songs
Saw you guys performing at a pub in Gloucester a few months back and you were just brilliant! Love this track, and the fact there are groups keepin' the spirit o' the sea alive!
Back again after seeing the 100k special!!! Love them both
Damn! Its been 8 years
Listening to this after your appearance on Jingle Jam 2021, really showswhere you began.
This video was the first time I heard you singing, whenever it was years ago that I first discovered this video. Plan on seeing you guys when you come to Cambridge in the spring. Looking forward to it. I'm a boat captain out of Boston and you gentlemen are for sure on my playlist I've got going in the wheelhouse. Keep it up!
I want to see'em singing Leave her Jhonny, I think it'll be good!
And congrats! Great version of the song!

Went all the way too the bottom too see the first video masterpiece
We used to sing this in Brownies, back in the 50’s.

Happy 9th Birthday, Johns! Love your music!
Andy in this video is my spirit animal.
Excellent singing, keep up the good work lads.
Yall have come so far. Great job!
A brilliant performance gentlemen.
Wow. They're amazing!
The embodiment of ‘singing shanties with the boys’.
Who's listening to this on 2021
Sweet.
reminds me a bit of Fishing With Finnegan. Great job!
Still brings a smile to my face, in Poland, as a Hungarian, blessed with several years in video game studies, just resonating with the camaraderie of voice that is conjured up with a dram of liquor (if indeed it is liquor), and a talent that would put the Cuphead creators to shame!
this is quite something and i really enjoyed it!:D
love it! great job.
And so it began...
Love u guys amazing xx
felt like watching what there first video looked like, and dang have they only been improving. keep it up lads
Love it guys you have fab voices, myself and my family have a very strong connection to this particular song and so really enjoy hearing modern versions of it. The only thing that lets you down is as benedict hampus say the omission of the traditional "to me" as part of the phrasing - this song originally was sung to aid the hard work of dragging a massive mainsail "to me" hence it's huge importance lyrically. Other than that good job and will keep an eye out for you in future :)
I've been listening to a bunch of your stuff lately and I realized I recognised this tune. I played a sea shanty piece in like 4th grade with my flute called Between Wind and Water, and it was this tune without syncopation! Anyway, cool song.
Stunning harmony
Been droppin bangers since the beginning
That was awesome!
Id just love to hear this version :)
I thought there was a verse that went: but girls don't like to kiss and run they all would like to marry, ( or tarry) one or the other we used to have to sing this song in music class, and had it stuck in my head almost 20 yrs later, so anyway that is how I got here..lol Nice job gents
Lets make a push to the US with this!
I agree, I want people like this to have a larger impact on the music scene in my country. Too much crappy dance music these days.
SvenGames Well that there's a familiar face.
Well you did
Please, come quickly. This shitty music here just keeps getting worse.
clase degraff fuck the us
cheers!
so long Dave good luck in your future endeavors.
cornish girl that drives you maizey?
is that a pun?
Oh my fucking god. I never heard the lyric clearly. What the fuck I love this song even more now
@@catnerdadrian7601 i'm pretty sure the correct lyric is "...a Bristol girl and she just drives me crazy"
but i love the pun
@@jasonkeats931 shanties have no correct lyrics, I've also heard versions where the Bristol girl, English girl, or Cornish girl was the ex and the Irish or Glasgow girl was the new girlfriend. They're old songs, and have been sung by so many people who each had their own version, intentionally or otherwise.
Awesome you should go to the Renaissance Festival and preform their, you guys would fit right in! 😀
Love it ♥
Realised it was fishermen's friends version but love this one as well. Marketeers best ever cart for me
This is excellent!
Absolutely top notch brilliance..Rule Britannia and God bless Kernow. I want to be in that kitchen!!!!! But Where are the Oggies??
I love it!
These gentlemen are welcome to come hang out around my kitchen table anytime!
I liked that so much that I actually clicked the "like" button!
Brilliant, chaps.
Another verse you could add in. I heard this in another version. "Saint Patrick was a gentle man, he came from decent people. They built a church in Dublin-town, and on it put a steeple." You're welcome, lads!
Don't know if you guys are familiar with the Somerset carnivals but one of the carnival clubs have used this on their cart this year and it sounds fantastic. It's totally in my head now.
Check out Marketeers carnival club 2015-Noah
I'm in the Somerset carnivals, in renegades, and enjoyed it, this was also one of my favourite carts this year because of the song. They used the fishermens friends one x
Can’t believe the change in 10 years
It’s mad!
Fantastic
I'm doing this song when I go to the octagon theatre on thursday
Am I the only one who noticed the candlestick that looks like Lumiere from beauty and the beast. Great song btw!!!😉
Hey! You guys sound beautiful together!
great. cheers
Brilliant
1:43 made me go "holy shit dem voices." Keep up the good work guys!
The harmonies are good
Argh! Damn, guys, you are great!!!
id love a remaster of this
You guys should do a Quarantine version of this!
