- Rotoscoping can be hard. But, it doesn't have to be! These 6 tips will get you started right, working efficiently, and using fewer keyframes. These concepts have saved me hours of my life, and I hope they help you too! Sometimes, we cannot avoid the roto, so I hope these tips can make it more manageable.

this is an amazing tutorial,
I have learned all of these the hard way,
here are some tips from me
1-use the new edge snap tool/magnet pen to get the edges faster and accurately
2-some times drawing a shape around a big complex actor for one frame for each frame is faster than making many small shapes if you won't be able to track the small shapes.
3-get a second monitor and watch a movie or a series while rotoing as for long runs if you got bored then you will be way slower than normal but while watching a movie you won't get bored and the work is not tedious anymore.
It's definitely a process to find what works subjectively. The work of work is creating systems that make us more efficient and happy. Glad you've found what works for you :)

Thanks Evan! Because I travel so much, I can’t use a green screen as much as I’d like. I find myself having to roto quite a bit so learning how to speed up this process by any means is amazing. Thanks for for this wonderful video!

Great tutorial. Don't suppose you have a tutorial on rotoing hair in a breeze and fur? I've been trying rotobrush 2 with refine edge but it's not been brilliant.

Thanks for another excellent video tutorial. I often prefer putting a stick in my eye over rotoscope work, but that only makes the next roto job even harder, so I press on and dive in.
I would love to see a tutorial by you regarding After Effect's Rotobrush. I have watched many tutorials, but for the life of me, all my attempts with Rotobrush usually end up with another stick in my eye. So I hope you will consider doing a tutorial on Rotobrush before I loose my mind (and sight). Thanks!
I can definitely put it on the list. It's a tool I have not found to be super helpful, and often very resource intensive for what it accomplishes. But it does have its purpose.
@@ECAbrams Thanks for considering this. I've seen some promising results, only to be disappointed when the selections go astray and I eventually abandon it altogether. I've spent an inordinate amount of time trying to get it to work. Some users claim great success, so I assume my failure is mostly user error. If anyone can explain the proper technique I'm missing, it would be you. No pressure, right?

am from Tanzania when i use rotoscoping and turn off AE when i turn on again it tell me the file data is missing can you help me why?

ECAbrams that sounds cool! It would be awesome to see close to impossible roto work. It would also be good to see actually impossible roto work 🥳. A lot of times with roto, I have the attitude: if someone can do it... I can do it too, if I just know the right way. Helps a lot to see someone doing some insane roto work 💪
@@ECAbrams Here's few more of the insane: Barbwire, any kind of fence built out of some sort of strings etc. Sounds like I'm trolling here :D but I always wonder who in the world has rotoed something that I see.
This is kinda still slow movement but how to deal with motion blur? Like let's say some quick wall on green screen you need to roto?
I believe there is actually a little switch to turn on motion blur for the splines, that might help to calculate a motion blur from the change of spline shape and location. BUT, motion blur is the natural enemy of rotoscoping. If you have a green screen background though, chroma keying should be able to get you the keyed blurry area right? Unless you're clamping the results after the matte is applies. Boris makes are really good keying plugin I would highly recommend if you're not getting good enough results on your chroma keys.
as always I loved the video, maybe I missed something, but one thing I realized was that you never showed a final key/matte. Usually when i'm doing roto i'm contstantly preview the final key/matte or alpha channel. I'm new to Mocha so maybe i'm missing the point and will need to watch an introduction to Mocha video. Thanks again

I'm getting a lot of aliasing on the edges of my mask. Any idea how to reduce or solve this issue? I have a few other clips in the comp that have mocha masks and they're perfectly fine.
Oh, interesting. There are some effects that could smooth it out like matte chokers and channel effects. But it's strange that it's one of many similar examples. You haven't bumped a layer quality toggle by any chance?
@@ECAbrams Figured it out. It was a blend mode I forgot to disable on the layer when I did some temp masking in premiere.

I use the Rotoscoping that is done using the Ae brush not Mocha. Can u provide a comparison between them or why should someone use this or that or what situations would be better to use anyone of them?
Imagine masking black hair on a black background or objects that are out of focus or motion blurred. These are some of the simple examples where rotobrush will not work, but Mocha will still save you time.
That's definitely a good subject for a followup video. There are a lot of factors to get into. And, choosing the right tool off the jump can really save a lot of lost hours later on. I'm gonna get that in the topic queue asap!
Is it necessary to hint Mocha the position of the plane before tracking? Because I've never done that.
it is better when you do that. Mocha knows what is the plain and perspective and makes track better with the shape.
Absolutely. Telling mocha more info is always best.

Whenever I try to track my layer, I get an Error - "tracking layer terminated prematurely"
Followed by "one or two layers were not tracked properly"
What am I doing wrong?!?? Please help me out
it could be a problem with the patch you have selected to track. There are many variables in tracking.

In this video, no. Mocha Ae is really only used here to speak to the concepts of Roto rather than the technical aspects. In future videos we'll look at particular tools that may be unique to Mocha Pro. But, everyone can follow along with this one.

I have a few other tutorials on this channel but that's about it for content by me about mocha though.

Make a Tutorial about rotoscoping a person in motion and placing Motion Graphics behind him.
I'll put the idea on the list. But, it may not be that satisfying of a tutorial. I would actually advise trying a pass with the rotobrush in Ae first if it's a full body, head to toe shot, of a person walking in profile.

@@movietrailer4113 as with most things, it depends on the specific task the tool is being applied to. Automated and AI driven systems can do a lot of big lifting. But they also make a lot of mistakes we need to correct manually anyway. For example, if the subject is wearing dark clothes, and walks into a shadowed area, the rotobrush can become completely confused by the similarity of the pixels.

5:00 agh wouldn't you use something like the paintbrush tool in Mocha? i don't know if thats what its called, but ive seen it in tutorials before. You paint over stuff just like when rotoscoping in After Effects.
I believe mocha has one of those now. I'm not sure it was a feature at the time of recording. Works well on patches of like pixels to make quick masks for sure.
