As long as I can remember my family celebrated St. Nicholas Day. I went to a Byzantine Catholic elementary school and have a German, Slovak, and Italian background. It is because of St. Nicholas that I will always believe in Santa Claus and the joy of gift giving and thinking of and sharing with others. My mother would have me put out my old shoes at night. In the morning they were replaced by a new pair of winter boots...perfect timing in Pennsylvania. They always had the chocolate gold coins, a chocolate Santa Claus, an orange, a candy cane and a new ornament for the Christmas tree in them. My husband happened to be Byzantine Greek too however never celebrated St. Nicholas Day until he met me. We have shared this tradition with our three sons for the past 30 years. He actually added a Matchbox car to the new shoes or boots for the boys along with the traditional goodies...his personal touch. As our sons grew and moved away they each received their box of Christmas ornaments to take with them. They are continuing this tradition with their new families now. Happy St. Nicholas Day!

Yes! Thank you for posting this! I grew up with this tradition as well, and feel quite saddened as I get older that it has been replaced by Santa Claus or Father Christmas which are not only very Northern Hemisphere centric but have also eliminated St Nicholas, his deeds, and messages all together in the process. I have been trying to reclaim this tradition with my nieces and nephews. Thanks again for this video, Happy St Nicholas Day and Merry Christmas 2018!

That’s great! We do the shoe thing too. I’m actually considering nixing the “stockings” since he already fills the shoes. We’ll see if Ryan’s on board. The kids know “Santa Clause” is St Nick. I’d actually love to nix Santa on Dec 24 altogether but until they’re older, he’s staying. We just say he comes twice: once in memory of his feast day and once to honor Jesus. 🤷‍♀️

I'm British, but I do know a bit about St Nicholas Day.
They get small presents if they've been good during the year. But if they've been naughty, they get a stick, as far as I'm aware.
It is said that the stick would be for the parents to discipline the child with. One should hope that they don't use it for that purpose, though, because in modern Germany, there is a complete ban on all forms of physical punishment of children!

I love this. 💝💝💝 I lived in Italy many years and they have the tradition of Baby Jesus (Gesu Bambino) bringing children gifts. Unfortunately American tv is very rampant and Santa Claus is taking over. I always get teary-eyed when Italian children keep the old traditions.

We don't celebrate St. Nicolas day and we don't even do Santa Claus. We keep focused on the birth of Jesus and celebrate Him all month the best we can starting with the 1st day in December. The reason being goes back to my personal childhood. I just want my kids focused that Jesus is the reason for the season ❤

They may feel like Jesus acted for himself if you do that. He made all of life sacred and by God’s Grace the Holy Spirit empowers those like Saint Nicholas to work miracles. It’s important to kids to know that.

@@anastasiarogich7839 That's why we study the bible and all those Who God, Jesus and the Holy Ghost empowers to work miracles. 😁 We have talked about others like St. Patrick and different ones in history who God used to spread the gospel, etc. We just don't celebrate anyone else during the Christmas season except for Jesus and His Birth because THAT is far above more important. Knowing Who our Lord and Savior is 😏

That is a great and educational video. I only wish you didn't emphasize repeatedly that St. Nicholas is a real man, as opposed to Santa Claus. I would very much like to teach my very young students about traditions around the world without disenchanting them of their own families' traditions. Alas... I will have to keep looking. Otherwise, this would be perfect. Thank you for sharing.
