Hello Friends! Mark you calendar! Dec. 6th is St Nicholas feast day! Have you heard of the traditions to do on St Nicholas' Feast Day? Does your family celebrate St Nicholas? If so what do you do please share!
In Slovakia we celebrate Dec. 6th St. Nicholas Day. And then on Christmas Eve we actually have Jesus bringing presents. It is a bit confusing as we live in Scotland now and here it is Santa who brings presents. I really prefer Jesus bringing present with his birth-it makes more sense to me. Hope I don't offend anyone ;-)
I have been celebrating St Nicholas Day since childhood. Now I'm celebrating with my grandchildren. We leave shoes by the door so St Nicholas can fill them with treats. We eat a special dinner and read the scriptures and watch a.movie.
To make it authentic as they do in Holland , order wooden shoes and use the wooden shoes , like the Dutch did years ago .
In Poland we do both. We give children gifts on St. Nick🎅 and then on Christmas Eve. I love the Advent season and I love Christmas🎄❤️🎁🎀🎄
bovary3000 nice! That is a fun way to do it!
You actually have two st nicks, a small one and a big one.
Quite confusing for kids
We are starting our Saint Nicholas feast day this year. Everyone gets new PJs and slippers and we will watch veggie tales! I’ll probably make brownies bc I’m not very creative lol.
great idea to give PJ and slippers how fun! Brownies are always great! lol
Hi! I am orthodox Christian and I follow the old calendar like the Easter rite Catholics and my st Nicholas is December 19th. One of our things in the Serbian church is called slava. We invite friends and family (and sometimes the priest) to eat dinner and celebrate the saint. We have our meal blessed at church and icons and whatever else. We give gifts like icons and candles. I hope you have a great st Nicholas day. The eastern rite Catholic Church celebrate st Nicholas like crazy. I encourage you to go to Devine liturgy one time (the 6th or the 19th). :)
In Spain we celebrate the "Three Wise Kings" (Epiphany) in a similar way you do in St. Nicholas'; children will leave their shoes outside the room at night and also milk and biscuits for the Kings and the camels. In the past, children received presents only in the Epiphany but nowadays they get presents in Christmas day and 6th of January.
Nuria CB such a cute idea!
My husband lived in Germany as a child. His parents were military, Army. So he always got one present on St Nicolas Day from St Nicolas and then gifts from Santa and family on Christmas Day.
I just found your channel and I love it!! I am a young mom. (I am 26, have a 7 year old). I am so lucky enough to put my daughter in a Catholic school. They had a st Nick day yesterday at school but my daughter told me this morning that her teacher told her that St Nick would stop by the house today (the day after) and St Nick would stop by the house today and if she left her shoe bag out today. so I am scrambling to get ideas on what to do! thanks for all the ideas!!!!
Hello! This is my first time hearing of this 🎅but my family does Celebrate “ Dia de los Reyes” (Epiphany) which is very similar to what you did, leaving shoes 👞 out and receiving a small 🎁 gift! We also have a Pastry 🥮 called “Rosca” 😋 Very cool to hear of different traditions! 🤗
Claudia A that is great! I love how there is so many different ways of celebrating.
Hey catholic mom. Our church has the kiddos put one shoe outside the classroom door and saint Nicholas comes, it's so cute.
I'm currently in RCIA and this is our first time celebrating Advent. I have an Advent Wreath that we light each night and I put together an Advent Calendar for my oldest, where each day he gets a little useful item (fuzzy Christmas socks), or an activity (St. Nicholas craft on the 6th!), or a treat (candy cane). I REALLY like the idea of doing the cookies! I cannot do sugar cookies for anything, so these will be simple little things that I can do with my 4 year old. Thank you!
SO excited you are celebrating Advent this year! How fun to join in the different celebrations!
I am so glad I found you!!! I have been binge watching your videos all day! 😂 Love the ornament idea!! You are awesome!
Hi Heather, Thanks for the great ideas. My kids are 2 and 3, so this is the first year that we are really thinking about the traditions we will carry forward as they grow. I was a bit confused about how to handle the Santa v. Jesus conflict, where everything is about Santa and his reindeer. I am definitely going to celebrate the feast of St Nicholas now, to help them understand how it all fits in together.
Thank you! Wish I had seen this 25 years ago! Keep up the great work in raising Catholic children!
Hi, my mom always celebrated St. Nicholas day and unfortunately I never did with my son but I'm having a wonderful time celebrating it with my grandchildren. We're encouraging giving in secret and making ourselves better people. Thank you for your channel
I love what you put in their shoes and the thoughts behind :) We have always had chocolate in our shoe and once I got a Barbie doll - I still remember that year. It was so exciting!!! I might imply some of your traditions once my son gets older :-) He's just 5 months now.
I’m Lutheran (German ancestry) and we observe St. Nicholas Day. I know my family has for generations. We had our stockings filled with chocolates, oranges, and I think potatoes. Also a small toy or maybe a new shirt or sweater. I remember telling my friends about this and they had no idea this was a thing, and I live in a predominantly Roman Catholic area.
What wonderful ideas!! Thank you for sharing. ♥️☺️🎅🏻
This is beautiful. I never thought of doing the St. Nicholas gifts on his feast day rather than on Christmas Day ! So smart!
Those St.Nicholas cookies are the cutest! Love St.Nicholas's Feast! We read a couple St.Nick stories, kids leave their shoes out and we fill them with chocolate coins, an orange, and maybe something small. We also watch both of those movies, except when I watched this I realized we only have the VCR version of the non-VeggieTales movie...ack!
Happy St. Nikolaus Day!!!! Thanks for the video!
I love the St Nicholas cookies! I can’t wait to try them. We usually just do the shoe and talk about St Nicholas. We have the Veggie Tales book too.
You are a joy and a light! Your channel is so inspiring to me in my faith walk.
Thank you for spreading joy!!
God bless you and your family.
My daughter attends Catholic school. When she was in elementary school, each class would put their shoes outside the classroom door and they would get candy canes and a pencil. They also depicted a saint when they were in third grade and she chose Saint Nicholas. It was a lot of fun for the whole family to learn all about him.
Michelle Kimball i love Catholic school when they add those fun traditions! 😀
Thanks for the video. I love the idea of the shoes with the goodies. In Mexico they do something similar for the epiphany. :)
We celebrate with children setting out their shoes to receive little congratulatory gifts like chocolate golden coins, fruit, candy canes. One year they needed new shoes so they actually got their new shoes.
They write their letters to St Nicholas telling him their wish list. About a week later they receive a letter back from St Nicholas telling them because of their last year’s behavior, what virtues they need to work on in the coming year. Yes, the Jesse Tree, & the celebrating O Antiphons from Dec 17 - Dec 24. Have a Blessed Advent growing closer to Jesus.
Doing the shoe activity for CCD tomorrow! So excited!
Thanks Heather! I loved the ideas cause in Brazil we dont get to know about Saint Nicholas unfortunetely
Thank you for sharing the sweet activities that you and your family do to celebrate the liturgical seasons and Feast days! I am now almost 20 weeks pregnant with our first little one and I can not wait to begin family traditions that focus on our Catholic faith! Thank you, God Bless, and Happy Advent! :D
Maggie Hutcheson congratulations!
Great video! We love the feast of St. Nicholas! My children put one of their shoes on the hearth, and receive candy and usually a book as their gifts. Now I can’t wait to make those cookies! Thank you so much for the idea! God bless.
Annie Laurie love the book idea!
Wow, beautiful celebration and I love the Santa’s cookies. A big winner.
U take me, back in time, where my mom, did fill our new shoes with candy, and put them under the Christmas tree, where we were to find it and enjoy on Christmas Day.
Here, I celebrate with my grandchildren, Saint Nicholas’s day. They get presents 🎁, and we read stories about Him. Thank u for sharing.
🙏❤️🌻👍🍁🌟⛄️❄️🎄
I love these ideas so much!
St Nicholas was waiting outside after Mass yesterday handing out cute wooden toys to the kids.
CrankinRankins that is so cute! I love that!
There’s a good St Nicholas video on Formed! This is our second year celebrating his feast day. The kids loved it last year! We put out a shoe and St Nicholas fills it with candy and a small toy. I like the ornament idea!
Hey, do you remember the name of the movie? I am trying to find it on Formed. thanks.
@@neldaallen3583 It's just titled "Nicholas" and has a boy on the cover with blond hair and a red tunic. It's SO good!
What Laura Likes thank you so much for sharing! I’ve been wanting to check out Formed is it good?
@@ACatholicMomsLifeYes, wonderful, movies, books, awesome bible study videos and great for a parish. I think a Parish subscription is around $800-$900 a year. $10 a month for individuals
@@ACatholicMomsLife Oh yes! I'm thankful the parish I used to attend had signed up for it so I still use that log in. It's wonderful! I want to watch the Presence series. A bunch of Brother Francis is in there, including a NEW daily Advent series with an "action" which we just found today! They have a ton of Catholic movies, books, and audio. I think you can download any of the books to your Kindle or iPhone through your Kindle email or however that works. If your parish has it, I HIGHLY suggest checking it out! There's an app for you iPhone but not for Amazon or Apple TV . . . so currently I use my phone to "mirror" to the tv, which is a bit of a pain but it works.
My sons do the advent calendar. As well as celebrating St. Nicholas Day. My sons leave their shoes out they get a new ornament and some treats
We are doing the Jesse tree for the first time this year. The shining light dolls website has free printable ornaments. I hope to next year get my craft on and make some ornaments. My husbands parents always get the kids an ornament for St. Nicholas day but this year I hope to do the shoes and make that a tradition. Those cookies are so much fun. My 7 year old will love making those.
Amanda Lehnertz Thank you for sharing that The shining light dolls website! So glad your doing the Hesse tree😁
I just loved this video!! Great job ❤️ I added it to my channel under the “Catholic UA-camrs” playlist 😊
Awesome thanks!
The Nicholas video is available on the Formed app for those who are subscribed to that!
We got the ornaments and book you suggested for the Jesse tree and so far my 11 yr old really likes it.
I’m going to the store now to get the stuff to make those cookies! Thanks for the suggestions!
Edited to add: This is our first Advent officially as Catholics (we were RCIA last year and were busy studying doctrine and dogma and not too much the family traditions). So, we added the Jesse tree this year and this is the first St Nicholas feast we’re celebrating. I bought oranges and gold coins and warm fuzzy slipper socks to put in Autumn’s shoes. She and I will also be making the St Nick cookies tomorrow after she gets home from school. Next year we’re homeschooling for middle school so I’ll likely incorporate even more liturgical stuff into our practice. For right now, doing the advent wreath and Jesse tree as a family once we eat dinner and hubby relaxes a bit seems to be just right.
Sarah Speier thanks for sharing. I’ll have to look for that video on formed. 😊
I am from the Netherlands and we always have big St. Nicolas or Sinterklaas celebrations. I think in Belgium and maybe in Germany they have the same tradition. We have the celebration on the evening before his birthday. It is for children but grown ups take part in it as well. The grown ups exchange gifts and it is a tradition that you write a poem about the person and the gift. It has Catholic roots but it is different than what you are used to. In the past we did not give eachother gifts at Xmastime. But now a lot of people exchange gifts at Xmastime as well or instead. The shoe and the chocolate coins are very familiar for me. But we often put a carrot in the shoe for the horse of Sinterklaas. Great cookies btw. When my grandson is bigger I will make them for him and maybe one day we will make them together. Happy Sinterklaas!
Paola den Outer thank you for sharing! I love that one day you want to make the cookies with your grandchildren! I want to do the same!😁
I live in Germany since 1990, I got 2 children and when they were little they are so excited of coming Saint Nick Dec. 6th, this is how we celebrate Santa Claus day in Germany . Then Christmas in Germany the way we celebrate with my Family in Germany, Family get together celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, is all about Jesus Christ the King, then when I move here in United State is not the same like I used to live in Germany. My new Family here mostly the children are so excited for the gifts what Santa will bring. I know different country different traditions I understand that and respect that. I wish I can fly to see my Family in Germany and celebrate Christmas with them, but because of COVID stop me to see them. Thank you for sharing your video.
We use Christmas stockings instead of shoes and fill them with candy canes, chocolate coins and an orange. In the evening we’ll watch a movie and have hot chocolate with a peppermint stick for stirring. I really like the ornament idea!
Karla 514gc so fun!
Great video. I love the DIY St. Nicholas. It looks pretty.
thank you!
You are welcome.
Here in my Serbian family, Saint Nick is celebrated on 19th December and when I was a kid I used to get sweets and sometimes even toys but not in my shoe but in my stocking.
We do the exact same thing minuse the St . Nick cookies (those are cute) and hiding the St. Nick. We celebrate St. Nicholas Day ( we have the Boy Who Became Santa too-great movie), Chrsitmas and 3 Kings Day.
I watched this again because St Nicholas is my husband’s patron Saint/namesake and so this feast day is a big deal in our family but I have been sick this year so wasn’t able to do everything I’d normally have liked to… Deo gratias, I had bought chocolate coins and candy canes ahead of time so there will be *something* in their shoes and we have a book about the legend of St Nicholas we read every year but I wasn’t able to get the ornaments or mandarin oranges… Oh well, you can only do what you can do, right? Oh and something funny regarding your video this year about preparing for Advent… I lost count of how many times you mentioned red and green M&Ms which was really funny to me at the time… but the next time I was at the grocery store, I picked up red and green M&Ms. 😂 As for Advent, we have had a lot of outside stress messing up our plans and I wasn’t able to get the childrens advent book I’d wanted (similar to the one you recommended) but we do the Star from Afar instead of elf on the shelf and that has become a beloved tradition and aside from that, this year besides lighting the advent wreath, we are reading 1 chapter from the gospel of St Luke each night and focusing on the Holy Family. Next year I hope to do the Jesse Tree as we have not done that yet. This year is more simple but maybe that’s what we needed and what God wanted for us.
My MIL is from Germany so our kids grew up hearing stories of St. Nicholas visiting her home along with his companion Black Peter, who was ugly and carried a sack to put naughty children in! My husband picked up wooden shoes on one of his military trips to the Netherlands. The night before St Nicholas Day, we put the shoes out on the front porch along with some carrots for St. Nicholas’ horse. In the morning, the kids would find German chocolates in their shoes. One year, Black Peter left a note for my son. He was sad about not getting any treats but relieved not to have been personally visited by Black Peter. His big sister took pity on him though and shared some of her chocolates with him!
This must be at least 50 years ago. Peter nowadays is kind and positive. Saint and Peter nowadays never do threats anymore. Saint is just like a grandpa en Peter more of a clown. Kids love Peter these days.
I never got why parents do use someone (like Saint, Santa, Peter, Krampus) to make their children behave. Not getting candys for not being always good is just so sad 😥
They do this in Germany. I live in the UK but have a German mum so we do this every year too x
Yes, I'm German and we celebrate St. Nicholas every year. Sadly, It's highly commercialized here and not particularly Catholic/Holy anymore in most families. :(
God bless St.Nicholas💗
Yes, we love our Jesse tree! We put chocolate coins, candy canes, and some other chocolate in the shoes, clementines and nuts on the table,,,those fun and messy nuts in the shell, lol. We make some cherry pecan coffee cake and hot cocoa for breakfast, read our books about him, and make those german spice cookies,,,the name is escaping me now,,,lol
That seems like a great St Nicholas day! I love the coffee cake and book idea!
We celebrate it at our parish the weekend before it so sweet to see the kids leave their shoes. Are there any other feast days you celebrate with the kids in special ways like this?
What a great idea! I love how the parish is involved!
I'm doing the Jesse Tree as soon as I get all the stuff out LOL
Beth Anne Kaczmarczyk that is great!
I'm actually watching this video in July 2019 !
love that!
My Oma, who was Dutch, brought this to our family and we did a lot of your traditions including the shoes and book. On the day of the feast, we also included the stomping of St. Nicholas's horse via one of the older kids or a parent banging on the roof or deck outside with a piece of 2x4. While the kids were distracted with that, we would rip open and toss a bag or two of pepernotens from the balcony upstairs all over the living room pretending to be Black Peter. Then we would open some small gifts which all had a rhyme associated with them which we would read aloud then sing "Dankje Sinterklaasje!", including a chocolate letter that was the first letter of our name. We would also sing the same song that was in the original Miracle on 34th Street "Sinterklaas Kapoentje" - www.mamalisa.com/?t=es&p=3131
Thank you for posting these videos!
I live in the Netherlands. Many Dutch people celebrate Saint Nicolas with presents and Christmas with joy, dining and family-time. Or just presents with Chirstmas or some do both.
For kids the arrival is the most exciting. Saint and Peter arrive by boat to wave to the children, to shake their hands and give sweets to them. Television makes Saint Nicolas even more excited; every time a true 'Saint Nicolas Journal' is on tv. Every years it seems that there is a problem that Saint and Peter can't come, but also every year, Peter solves the problem. Saint is old and Peter is very jong and the helper of Saint. Their relation is based on friendship. Peter has black marks on his face because of the chimey. Earlier (around 50 years ago) kids got scared by Saint and Peter if you had not been good. Parents told the kids that naughty children would get a spanking with the rod. Which in practical terms never happend ofcourse. The child promised to behave better and at the end of the evening, everyone had some nice presents and was happy.
These days Saint is more a kind granddad who kindly pushes kids to behave better but also knows things to say about the things children do well and there talents. Peter is his helper and a bit of a clown towards the children.
From the day of arrival (half november), Saint and Peter are a lot in public; at the hospital, in schools, in playgrounds, at work from dad and mum and sometimes they visit houses. In the meanwhile kids put their shoes before the Chimey, sing a song and put a drawing inside their shoe and a carrot for the horse of SN.. Peter climbs down through the chimney and changes the drawings for some litle presents and candy.
At the 5th of december (The Netherlands and Dutch colonies) or 6th of december (Belgium, Germany), which is called 'presents-evening' Saint and Peter often visits schools (during the day). In the evening; Peter knocks hard on the door and drops the presents at the frontdoor and is gone (every year my dad just went to the garage to get something to drink. We never saw Peter running away. Later on I learned how that was possible. Sometimes Peter visits houses by its own (Peter can be young, old, black, white, female or male. Easier to preform peter than SN if you are a woman. Though in Amsterdam Saint is also black, so one day we will have female Nicholas as well 😜) . He makes a lot of mess by throwing candies through the house but is ofcourse very sweet and kind to the children. Afther 5 or 6 dec they are both just gone, because they go back to Spain where they live.
See the arrival of Saint and Peter 3 weeks ago. Its always a big and complete party; m.ua-cam.com/video/UoUJ6V41N70/v-deo.html
Pray the Holy Rosary.
Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
in philippines we celebrate feast day of saint.nicholas
My family celebrate st. Nicolas day
This is my first saint nicholas day
In Germany everyone celebrates Saint Nicholas's feast day, Protestants and atheists. It's become part of the culture. Before his feast day we would take our best shoes, which were the shoes we'd where for church, and polish them up, and poke out any stones caught in the soul of the shoe. "St. Nick won't put treats in a dirty shoe." My mom would always say.
It is also a wonderful symbol of purifying ones self in preparation for Christ's birth.
We would also do the same at school. Before his feast day we'd wash our desks, cubbies, and clean the classroom (even in non religious schools, such as the one I went to.) and the next day, the shoes had magical treats and our desks would have mandarins, walnuts and peanuts still in there shells, some gold coins and a little chocolate santa.
That is great! I love how everyone in Germany celebrates him! SO aweome!
So many traditions!! Is this cultural? Or all Catholics do this?
Some do and some don’t 🥰
What did you use for the eyes??
I used black frosting:). But I’ve seen little candy beads used too😊
St.Nicholas day is the day usually I hang Christmas star.... One star, rest of the star @24th December
I love that nutter butter idea! So cute! I made a video about our St Nicholas Day traditions last year: ua-cam.com/video/-dYs-YuqZRc/v-deo.html
Hi I am the first to comment here
I believe it's said to be Catholic AND Christian!
This year I want to get 3 $1 gold coins from the bank and put them in my son's shoe and he can play as St. Nick by giving them away at next Sunday's Mass.
I feel bad that someone has made a video about u bashing u😫
Bummer oh well God still loves them😊
