i personally believe that it would take ages for the general public to adopt a linux based os
a shiny fancy macbook, with a 2k pricetag feels waay more appealing to a normie, than a open source OS
there again, china is developing open kylin, a windows and mac replacement , as the chinese gov loses trust in western cooperations.
so if open kylin gets mass adoption in china one day, the market potential for linux software would be really high

@@AIC_onyt I have to use a MacBook for work, and apple delivers a pretty decent Unix like experience. Sure, the drivers and init system are Apple's proprietary software, but it still comes with SSH and zsh on the system. UX wise also MacOS is opinionated, but it can still be customized way more than Windows. Literally the best keybinding available in a commercial OS. (I have a setup where I mimic i3 keybinds and use Amethyst to tile my windows). I still prefer Linux because the system itself is more configurable, but I can see how anyone not inclined to tinker with their OS would pick MacOS over Linux - even if they are a CLI heavy developer.

@@AIC_onyt "Continues official support" I feel like that's just what it boils down to at the end of the day. Most people just want stability or the guarantee that the os that had all their precious work and entertainment data just won't suddenly break one day. This is why most normies most likely will stick with SteamOS for the steam deck instead of downloading windows because they have full confidence that valve will most likely support this os for the long-term.

The most amazing move M$ made decades ago: After being declared a monopoly by the government, and declared so in a court of law, they arranged to pay off portions of their fines by donating copies of windows to schools across the entire nation. Cost them pennies per disk (or less when just key lists), allowed them to charge much more per install against their bill, and ensure an entire generation of school kids grew up working on their operating system in a time when they may not even have a home computer. It also guaranteed any computers bought would be windows since that would be what was compatible with what the school used. Losing that court case was possibly the best marketing win M$ could have ever achieved. "Yup, you're a monopoly. Here's a fine you can pay off by indoctrinating an entire generation into using your OS." And so the stage was set for M$ to be the thing everyone was used to ever since. I really don't care of the company or its practices, but still have to admire the brilliance of that move.

Once I read someone's comment along the lines of "the year of the Linux desktop is a personal thing". I agree with that. For me, it was years ago. For someone else, it might be today. For yet another, it could be years from now. It all depends on whether your needs and wants can be met with Linux or not, and that is a very personal question.

That's probably the better way to go about it than just an all-encompassing thing like is usually discussed, tbh.
Because in that case, my year of Linux was last year. Still, it's just an OS - and at the end of the day, what else are OSes but tools?
Now if Michaelsoft would just STOP MESSING WITH THOSE TOOLS and adding ai-driven buttplugs, maybe switching wouldn't be such a hot topic.

Yeah, this makes sense. I've thought for a while that there will be no definite article "The" Year, merely stronger and weaker years. Seems like the years are definitely getting stronger though, both on Linux getting much more usable overall AND Windows getting... actively more hostile towards its userbase with each passing year. My year was a couple years ago, but Linux was... not ready for most people, at least as far as gaming -- productivity was generally fine then. Now I can recommend it much more wholeheartedly! The year depends on what you actually want and need and even just when you can put in the (substantial) effort to learn a new workflow, regardless of the 'objective' quality of the options. The 'push' from Windows sucking harder, the 'pull' from Linux getting better from your particular use case, and the opportunity to learn a new thing from scratch (often rare) all have to line up for the particular user for switching to make sense.
Sometimes I get the feeling that on some level, Microsoft doesn't _want_ to be supporting all the world's personal computers, but had the crown fall into their lap and are struggling to monetize that no longer functional position within the market they distorted while not disrupting operations badly enough that governments have to step in and remove them, but can't resist the natural tendency of shareholder corporations to try to make everything theirs and destroy anything they can't control for long enough to disentangle themselves from their own choking success, and as a result they almost... lash out against the users they've been 'unwillingly' saddled with. They can't let go of the addiction to what seems like a monopoly _juuust_ within their grasp, but in their desire to capture everything in a one-size-fits-all way and maintain a white-knuckled grip on all of it at once, they act with what seems like contempt towards everyone and everything that interacts with them. Eventually, the perceived resentment becomes mutual, and their very anti-consumer actions to consolidate power force people away from them. Isn't there a line going around (something Star Wars?), something about "the more they tighten their grip, the more slips through their grasp"? That seems to be the tragedy of Microsoft, to me. Well, a lot of corporate oligarchies, but Microsoft is a really big and 'boring' example. No big executive egos or new technology, just banal Too Big To Fail, too big to manoeuvre (but still needs to be _bigger_ by the next shareholder meeting). Three 'bigs' making an impossible situation that leads to customers getting screwed more each quarter.
It becomes too much for each person at a different time.

I like that. I've been using Linux on and off for like... 20 years now. I've gone back and forth, daily driving Linux for months or a year at a time, but i always end up back in Windows. I have always had livecds of various distros laying around, and these days I keep a ventoy thumb drive with several options on it.
I enjoy tinkering with it, and it's very powerful for certain things. But this video is accurate, I have a lot of momentum in my current setup, it's hard to change.
I've been getting back into Linux though with my steam deck, relearning some stuff.

lol yes. Every other year is "The year of linux" and usually it's for meh reasons. Though, I can't say never. If companies like microsoft stay on the course they are with aggressive advertisement, data harvesting, and opt-out "features" that turn themselves back on silently, the year of "enough is enough" may be upon us eventually.

I made a mint virtual machine recently to try it out on my PC and when I get a laptop next year I'm planning on going Mint with a gnome desktop. would probably have stayed on windows for much longer if not for the Steam Deck showing me Linux gaming is pretty simple.

I could be considered an "advanced" computer user but I'm a recent convert to Linux. As an outsider, I think those waist deep in Linux underestimate how important Linux is to the world today as to what technology can be in the future. It's a disruptor. There's no reason to not advocate for systems that are literally free of charge and open source.
As a newcomer learning Linux, I've come to see that I'm really just learning a deeper level of computing that's usually hidden in proprietary OS. I'm learning through one member of the "Unix family" which underpins almost every OS today (even mutants like Windows). I don't find Linux to be unfriendly more than I was previously poorly informed about computing.

It's actually completelly custom os, that's a rewrite of the 3ds OS.
The rumor comes from the open source licenses, where the FreeBSD license is included, because nintendo borrowed a small part of it for a socket api they make available to applications.

A bit of unsolicited advice if you don't mind. If you are doing something and it becomes complicated. Just ask yourself, what is the Linux way of doing this. Most of the time people bring their knowledge from Windows or MacOS and expect Linux to work the same. It would be like me taking all my years of Linux experience and going to Windows or MacOS and expecting things to be done the same way I'm used to with Linux.

"The year of the Linux desktop" imo, and I'm not talking about the 9x% meme bc for that to happen one of the other os will need to regress to linux current market share and let's be real that will not happen. But the "actual" "year" is to me once Linux will get big enough that outside software companies will view it as profitable enough to support. Once that happens and we get the software support the other os have (hell! I'd settle for like, 70% of it) I'd be happy.

  • @pallenda

I got forced win11 at work, and as a computer user for longer than I will admit, win11 might be the drop that will make me try Linux again at home. I have tried Linux a few times, with 5 years intervals, but always dropped it because I want to use my computer to solve other tasks and not have tinkering with linux be the main task.
Win11 feels like its going away from standards we have been used to for over a decade to make the UI look nicer. I HATE the new combined taskbar and the compressed rbm contexts menu. Win11 feels like its says "no do it this way" for UX stuff we have been used to for a long time. On top now the "AI" is creeping into office and windows and its both annoying as hell and scary.
So yeah, maybe its time to try Linux again. Even though I dread having to relearn names of tools I use. And its still strange to me that the Linux community can't focus on making it easier to pick the right distro for new users.
Year of Linux will never happen as long as the new user experience is not much more simplified. I work in a specialized area of computer graphics, and I wouldn't be surprised if only 20% of our younger colleagues know how to navigate the disk drive from a command prompt. Average Linux user is much more tech savvy than an average win/mac/mobile user.

I am biased (I've been using Arch for 5 years) but Arch is the best distro to use. Debian and Ubuntu variants have always had trouble with updates and getting the latest versions of software. The installation is a bit of a learning curve, but if you follow the directions exactly, and make sure to open links in a new tab, then it isn't so bad. Once everything is up and running it is super stable. If the installation is too much of a hurdle I recommend Manjaro KDE (Plasma) edition, but then you are trading some stability in updates for convenience.

People need a reason to switch, I'm used to DOS command line and windows xp made my machine slow to the point where it was barely usable. I had a real material reason to switch and had no choice but to use it as a daily driver. Anytime I want to retro game I use Linux and now that I have started using the Proton layer I'm only using Windows for game pass and Flight Simulator. People choose Windows because it works and usually works well on your machine for years at a time. I just had a cheap wal mart computer in 04.

I've found that Linux is extremely capable at becoming what you need it to be in a particular situation. If you need to build a gaming console that has an efficient kernel and the ability to layer on any kind of UI that you can build, then you can do it. But it takes technical skill and time. It is typically something someone is being paid for. It is the same when operating as a desktop OS. The ability to make it do whatever you want is definitely there, or it is open for development if not.
However, as a software developer myself, I just land in a sort of "eye-roll" moment every time I try it as a desktop OS. It's like... sure... I can absolutely develop a new piece of software to do this thing I'm used to, but I can't be bothered. And thus, Linux itself will never have its year. Because as optimistic as I and my other peers in the software industry are, I just don't feel like doing it.

  • @05Matz
    @05Matz Рік тому +4

Ooh, I'm excited for the series. Been using Linux (Mint, mostly) for years now, but I feel I never really properly 'learned' it. It's just that Windows got too... generally bad and too difficult to wrangle into doing what I wanted and too untrustworthy to feel good about using, and I could see that all the issues I had were getting increasingly worse over time and weren't going to reverse, so I started dual-booting and used Windows less and less as Wine/Proton/etc. improved, and one day I accidentally broke my Windows 7 partition and just... never reinstalled it. Learning more formal stuff about the common command-line utilities (useful, but not very discoverable except through randomly poking 'apropos' or searching your package manager), setting environment variables, and the like would be really useful for me.
I remember with the OLD versions of Windows (95, ME) I first really learned computers on I became seen as a 'technical' person because I read all the manuals and poked into every menu and could usually figure out how to make software do what someone wanted (the version of ME we had even actively encouraged personalisation like custom retheming of the UI, with a big package of styles to mix and match components from). Eventually Windows began actively resisting attempts to explore and tweak things, hiding functionality from the users, leaving things undocumented, and it was just more hassle than it was worth. I've been learning Linux in a similar intuitive way since (though these days we generally have either online documentation or textmode man/info files rather than the local hypertext manuals [.chm?] things had in the Win9X days. Still better than the general NO documentation/"don't worry your pretty little head about that" stuff modern Windows has. It's kind of frightening how copy-pasted and boilerplate Microsoft patch notes or error code lookups are. The majority of the time, it seems there's just... no information, they made a record for the thing but redacted out all the information.
Something like "Security update F7E6921 for Product(tm)(r)": "This is an important security update for Product(tm)(r). It is important to system security to install this update." seems to be all you get as far as update descriptions in Windows, and error codes don't seem any better (I thought after Therac-25 we as an industry all agreed that obscure error codes with no obvious cause/severity info and no user-accessible lookup table were bad!). It's important to me to have computers that are both honest (tell me what's going on) and obedient (do what I want them to, rather than some other party), and for that I had to switch, but I still have a sort of 'imposter syndrome' about myself as a "Linux User".
Honestly, my ability (and willingness) to read manuals is apparently still a big asset, it got me made PC Hardware Person of the house recently after unwillingness to read manuals caused embarrassing repeated damage for the previous (older generation) Technical Master Of All Trades. (PSA: Read both the motherboard AND THE CPU COOLER MANUAL when setting up a PC. CPU sockets are delicate, and you do NOT want to squish the CPU down millimetres more than intended by setting up a CPU cooler with the wrong mounting hardware. Plus, motherboard manuals are just fun reading. You learn so much about so many obscure features you didn't know your machine had! It's nostalgic for me, like when I was exploring computers for the first time and looking through the huge array of Packard Bell bundle-in disks and peripherals and manuals.)

I have used both linux and windows so dont tell me that im not respecting my own privacy by using windows or something, there are solutions to this in windows such as using a 3rd party firewall. Waylands main problem is that the devs limited the scope early on and ended up with it being too limited (only a display protocol) and this left a huge gap between what xorg provides and Wayland's core focus - now desktop environments like Plasma, Gnome, and even some projects like Sway are adding back that functionality but sometimes stepping on each other's toes. (Screen sharing is an excellent example)

I feel like a lot of Linux's "oddities" and differences from Windows could be solved at the shell/desktop environment level. Like, map every mountable partitions to drive letters, kinda like in Windows, hide the scary / file system (kinda what OSX is doing), have wine installed and configured by default so exes can run, as well as Mono/.NET Core to run .NET exes, etc. as well as GUI frontends for the console commands people may commonly use.
Like, the stuff like mounting partitions to arbitrary directories, / file system, terminal, etc. would be still available if you need/want it, but you wouldn't need to interact with it if you don't have to.

I understand where you come from. I don't use Wayland and have been in the GE servers and the amount of errors on Wayland is hilarious. I've heard peeps insist on it over and over again and trip up every 5 minutes. I've been on Mint 21.2 for the past year or so and it is fast and efficient. Likewise, I love your take on looking at it more as tool chains and habits. People do fear what they don't understand, and including that is an important part of improving support and helping people to ask relevant questions such as "What am I using my computer for?" and "Can Linux make what I do easier?". Also, privacy I think is only a secondary reason to switch. Linux in my view requires a growth mindset and an intent to learn more about your computer in general. It is okay that there are groups of people out there that don't want to put in that effort, as their effort is already going in other directions. I think the true way to market Linux is that it is a great way to learn about how computers work, and then you get to build something awesome in the process that is better tailored to what you want to do with it. I love Linux and being a computer enthusiast I went through hell to make it work just out of curiosity. I used the likes of Red Hat 7.0 from a book my dad had all the way through the early Fedora Core years burning cd's and getting stuff to work. Through the 2000s in high school I was part of an active computer club, and we literally tried everything from Ubuntu to Knoppix to Yellow Dog on the PS3. All of that struggle was to learn more about it. I used Windows as my main machine at the time, as Linux had literally nothing in terms of gaming and wine was in its infancy. Suffice it to say that I wouldn't be on Linux if it wasn't for my own curiosity and motivation to figure it out. I now encourage people to ask questions and do their best to find answers that help them make better decisions. Linux could be a good decision, but only if they come to that conclusion themselves. Rant is pretty much over, but I have autism, so it's hard to stop, lol. Keep up the good work.

The year of the Linux desktop, for me, came and went years ago. I've been daily driving Linux for over three years straight, with it being my sole OS (no dual-booting) for over two of those years. And I had actually been using it off and on for over a decade. Gaming was the one thing holding me back, and was the reason I switched back to Windows from Linux back in 2017. Now that Proton exists, and I can play damn near every game I want to play almost perfectly on Linux, I have zero reason to be on Windows. And thank god, because I do not like Windows 11.

I've had 3 issues with them because of their sandboxed environment. Discord Rich Presence games not being detected by the application (something I use because my friends send game invites through Discord), Ark not seeing folders for any applications except itself (which was a pain when try to extract my Switch files into Ryujinx. I had to extract them to my downloads and then move them with my file manager), and KdenLive not picking up my MLT library for GPU acceleration (yeah it's not stable but I tend to prefer running unstable stuff, and at least if I have issues with it I know where my issue is likely to lie). All of these were solved by removing them and installing them from apt instead

also the the drop in linux was indeed a fluke, you can see that when you account for language (80% of linux users are using english, and linux is far more popular in the english speaking world), the drop is indeed gone. It's even at 4% in the english world, so it is working, maybe not at the speed people want, and it will probably never be 50 or more %, but it is getting better.

When I realized my new RasPi didn't use Window$ I got into Linux and experimented it into hell (average lifetime of RasPiOS installs on my Pi: ~24h). Two or so years ago I banned Window$ out of my life because I simply got used to Linux and each time I touched Window$ it would battle me instead of letting me do my thing. Completely log off a Micro$oft account from Window$? Nope, reinstall or accept that you can't switch accounts. Customize past dark/light mode and accent colour? Nope, do you really believe Window$ was made _for_ the user?

I think there's a healthy middle ground. Sure, the year of the linux desktop isn't something we should all be chanting about around a fire every month, but it also isn't "never going to happen." I think as people slowly but surely get grossed out by the commercialization of things they like and have no other real options, free software like linux will become at least as mainstream and well understood as the alternatives. Once windows 10 drops support, I think linux numbers will go up a lot. This year, or the next, isn't the year of the fediverse either, but after reddit and twitter, the userbase did expand drastically, and that could happen over and over again.

The year of the Linux will never happen, it will happen over many years. Linux besides fragmentation has no marketing or commercial support. I think more people will adopt it and talk about it as the monopoly companies run out of new ideas and customers then continue to squeeze the existing customers for everything they have.
There will be a point where enough people use Linux to where the average person knows someone who uses it and considers it an option. It'll never be ahead of commercial OSs but I can see it someday reaching 10% (which would be amazing) but that won't be for a while.

There are workaround flags and commands I used to make them usable, althought it's not a proper fix and there never will be. My mouse works on one port and it doesn't on other, but when I swap it's place with where keyboard was plugged, they both work??
Also I soft bricked my phone when flashing custom signing keys and ROM, because ports are working, but again there is some issue, it just shows error mid-flashing, I forgot what the message was exacly, no matter which ports I used, back or front, tried most of them, but it flashed perfectly fine from Windows? I have Windows on dual boot but I never really use it.
A lot of these little annoyances make me not be able to fully ditch Windows, and that's me because I have patience to deal with this shit, not everyone does. But people also come to Linux with a wrong mindset, they decide to try Linux and then treat it like it's Windows, it's a completly different OS, it doesn't work the same and you will have to learn how it works. I would suggest giving Arch a shot. I'm not sure what mainboard you are using, but it is really rare for a motherboard and USB ports to have trouble - most of the chipset drivers are straight from AMD or Intel. @@etherweb6796 Arch derivatives, including Artix, work fine if I disable IOMMU Controller or use workaround fix I mentioned.
(Disabling IOMMU doesn't work on Ubuntu/Debian based distros, and disabling it introduces it's own issues, like mouse and keyboard randomly disconnecting and freezing, so I just apply workaround fix to every distro I use.)
But I still have other funky issues which tend to make me "paranoid", sometimes I'm not sure whether I fucked up something or it's just acting up on it's own. I had things die randomly on it's own even tho I never touched it. That is why I keep using distro as is once installed, I avoid customizing it just not to break anything.
I'm on Void Linux now, and I'm gonna stay on it. Decided to try it since it's fully independant systemd-free distro, Artix is Arch with systemd ripped out.
It works well, some blurry text issue I had in browsers on any other distros, I don't experience it here on Void for whatever reason.

@@stalkerscarface Interesting - I've thought about trying void - ultimately I decided against it because the project itself seems like it isn't in active development. Plus (and a lot of the Linux community will vehemently disagree with me) I actually like Systemd - it has a pretty simple syntax for creating units (services) and you can automate all sorts things with simple text files. I've setup an emacs daemon, Docker Compose based services, and even ssh filesystems that get mounted in my home folder when I login.
Also, it isn't unheard of to have IOMMU mess things up - my experience is it doesn't work on consumer grade motherboards as well as it should - but unless you are trying to run a Windows VM with GPU passthrough you really don't need it. (IMO, even the VM scenario isn't necessary - for games that absolutely need Windows it is easy enough to add an additional hard drive and dual boot)

I believe it would be better if systemd didn't try to do as much things as possible all by itself, that it would be better if things were separated, do 1 thing and do it well. I wouldn't mind other functions being avaliable as sort of an extension to systemd if you need them to integrate with each other, but not as one package-do-it-all kind of thing.

The sad reality is Linux won't take off ive heard it all since i was a teenager. macOS won the alternative war and it took it's number to over 30% market share in north america in two years. The rest of the world and especially the linux community seems to be completely ignoring this fact. India seems to be the main market linux is even growing.

There isn't a single reason yet for people to adopt linux.
Give it time, when it gets polished enough, someone out there will eventually be tricked into trying it, then he'll run as far as possible.

I remember doing a presentation for a class where I started with four headlines about "the year of the Linux desktop", starting with a French one saying that 2005 was going to be it and ending with a Japanese one from 2019 explaining why it never came

I used Windows for the most Part of my live without ever questioning it. It worked as a grew to a Power User Windows just had So many Problems without easy awnsers like bat Script like why do they have Problems with permissions? Why is my PC crashing every few days? Etc. The i tried MacOs(hackintosh) it sucked even more the User interface is so Bad i could not even get kde or cinamon to be that Bad. Everything costs money even i want the ability to tile my Windows like wtf. Now i use Linux for about 2 years i switches distros a couple of times because they kept breaking. Now i use nixos and it just works i can optimise my workflow so extrem that I get about 4x as much done with Linux than with Windows and the best thing is if I encounter a problem i can fix it no matter what it is except Bugs in the nvidia driver. I think that Linux is way better than windows even for beginners yes it might be a little overwelming to get started, which distro do i use etc. But it makes installing Software extremly easy and has a System wide Update. And everything you need for the work day runs on it except addobe but it sucks too.

Wait... Isn't saying linux is growing because the steam deck the same thing most outlets are saying? Sorry for my confusion, but I'm pretty sure they're saying the same thing. Linux is only gaining it's adoption rate and also actually improving, due to the wonderful work of the software engineers at valve that have developed this gaming experience as well as general tools to improve gaming on linux. I think people who say it's the year of the linux desktop don't realize it already is as long as they're using linux on the desktop. Our percentage doesn't matter, as long as a userbase exists, it's the year of the linux desktop.

Linux is improving because of the Deck, but most outlets (at least from the Linux side) roll up Deck with Linux sales - which is the part that I believe is misleading.
Still, it is getting better. But to say it's mass adoption ready would be pretty generous - but again, like you say, that isn't exactly the point either.
      Thanks for watching!

Your experience with Flatpaks is quite unfortunate. I personally do not like to use native packages because they tend to misbehave over time (be it wrong Fonts, missing codecs etc) whereas most times I install a Flatpak I know it will work and it will keep working. I admit, when I started using Linux I didn't mind using vulnerable native packages and even running Arch, but nowadays I just use Fedora with mostly flatpaks and I even use Wayland now, with a Nvidia card, because it's way smoother and i don't need to "hack" my system so certain features work, no tearing and just feels less buggy.
However, is true that is not perfect on Nvidia yet, there's still the issue of forced vsync which will be fixed in the next driver update, but i play competitive games daily and really don't see the difference.
Maybe I eventually became more easy to please or just prefer to not scratch my head with the old Linux anymore.
Nowadays, Linux is in better form that it was, and I have no need for Windows tbh. I'm happy with Linux now.

I feel like I should reiterate that I don't think Flatpaks are inherently bad - they just don't work for my workflow or muscle memory. I never *personally* ran into the prominent issues with native pm's that Flatpak supposedly set out to fix, and that it's ultimately a second, entirely separate package manager that ends up cluttering my already-pretty-close-to-full /home partition.
If I could have a separate partition entirely dedicated to Flatpaks, i.e. like my / (root) and /home split I have now, I probably wouldn't mind AS much (portals notwithstanding). But that's space I do kind of need - for reference, I only use three Wine prefixes for all of my non-Steam gaming needs (one for general, another for the shitty other launchers, and a third just to sidestep a current Wine bug for two games) as another space saving measure.
As for Wayland... *eh.* I wouldn't use it anyways until the screen recording situation is all figured out. I really don't enjoy using OBS for general recording needs, and having a sudoer prompt pop up every time I want to record on a whim (which I did just an hour earlier prior to writing this, fwiw!) would get really annoying really quick. That seems to be a common *thing* with Wayland I've noticed, as one of the Linux creators I follow has a similar solitary grievance with it that makes it nearly a non-starter when it would be perfectly fine otherwise.
Behind the scenes, I kind of spend a lot more time diagnosing and reporting issues for due diligence than I care to admit (it's all like lesser known projects and mods n'stuff, nothing too special, though I did have to report something to Wine recently which was fun), so again it all kinda comes back around to the whole habits and workflow thing, lol.
Wow, this was way more than I'd thought I write. Sorry about that! Thanks for watching.

That video was way to nihilistic, where is the energy in that? You're supposed to be more fanatical! Only then will the plebs listen to your guidance and actually switch to Linux. Let's make the Year of Linux a reality. It is possible my friends. I believe!
