New subscriber and to quote Seth Skorkowsky's review video which I just stumbled upon last week. 'OMG Where has Traveller been in my life'. Aware of it obviously but never took the plunge. Long time A.H. (ASL)/TSR (D&D/Top Secret/Boot Hill) gamer since early 80's but only now, 40 years later, getting into Traveller and that is a great place and hard place to be. Thanks for your videos, been watching them and taking notes and find them extremely helpful. This vid in particular. After the 2022 core rules the natural question was .. what next to get? Going with the Companion but first setting book probably will be the Imperium book. Great review!
The Solomani front is a great resource, but unless your campaign is set in that region I'm not sure I'd recommend it. I also got the humble bundle. The central supply catalog is the best resource.
I also picked up the bundle and like you had quite a few already but it still was fantastic value for money getting even the half of those pdfs that I didn't have.
Thanks for mentioning the current humble bundle, i was going to bring it up. They are well worth keeping an eye on, for a bunch of things. Have grabbed tons of good stuff through them for scifi and fantasy ttrpgs, computer games, and all sorts of general nerd-dom books etc. All proceeds for good causes too!!
I'm embarrassed that I haven't looked at them more closely in the past. For less than the cost of even ONE of those titles you can get a HUGE collection. Great cause too!
Great recommendations! After the core book, I'd definitely recommend the Catalogue and I've personally enjoyed The Pirates of Drinax more than any other Traveller supplement I've read in the past 40 years. That GM screen looks gorgeous. After seeing it here I'll definitely pick it up. REALLY enjoyed the Third Imperium book, too. Highly recommend! That bundle looks like a FANTASTIC deal. Even for someone who already has most of those titles, it seems just too good to pass up.
I hadn't really considered the Third Imperium book, but after you mentioned it I'll give it a look. And the Humble Bundle has a lot in it that I'd like to have.
@@docsavage8640 Good question! I dropped Traveller in the early 80's before much of the setting was developed, but I came back to it briefly in 2006 when Loren Wiseman (R.I.P.) went to SJG and they published GURPS: Traveller, and kinda liked it. Then not again until MGT2, and all of the material they've published has really made me enjoy the Charted Space setting and the vast history. It *seems* like much or maybe most of the story elements are pretty tightly wrapped around the setting assumptions. It takes a week to travel any distance from 1 to 6 parsecs. Most vessels only carry enough fuel for a jump or two. You need gas giants to refuel. No FTL communication means news spreads at the speed of ship. etc... However, I feel like Pirates of Drinax is one of the best sandbox campaigns I've ever seen for any "space" game. I think it might still work with different star travel mechanics. It's a nice framework. The Third Imperium book however, is really setting specific. It's basically a history of the Imperium and a gazetteer of current events. I think it's a cool look at the setting, but I suppose you could mine some of it for a similar setting with a quasi-feudal hierarchy? This is mainly algorithm bait at this point and WAY too long winded, but I'll look back over it and see if anything jumps out.
A handy guide to what is worth getting as a starter. Just as a note, the GM screen is no longer available direct from Mongoose, but may be available from retailers; it's also for the 2016 edition - they might be releasing one for the 2022 update, but it isn't on their release schedule at the moment.
@6:00 Not telling you how to run your Pirates, but the documentation itself has good ways to help make your players be invested in the adventure. Like making them nobles from the court of Drinax with an invested interest in helping the king succeed and make Drinax great again. Obviously if you have seasoned travelers and aren't making new characters, then this won't really work, but I think making new characters with vested interests in Drinax is the obvious way to engage them in the full storyline and not have them go rogue right away.
Should have discovered your channel sooner xD Wanna start playing traveler, it looks awesome. Small bummer that i missed the Humble bundle. Will keep an eye out for the next one.
That's GREAT customer service! I've seen some publishers over the years include a redemption code or something, but just handling it off an email message seems really generous. Reminds me of Bob Farrell and his Give 'Em the Pickle philosophy. I'm really glad Mongoose has done so well over the years. They seem like a net positive for the gaming community.
Oh, thank you for mentioning the Humble bundle. I will probably get it, for the drinax stuff alone :D I do already own the core book and the older supply catalogue (and weirdly also the Glorious empire book), but the Field catalogue is a nice cherry on top of the Drinax books
At the moment there are 2 deals on Bundle of Holding - the starter set, companion, High Guard and more; the second is about Mercenaries and some adventures.
I wish I was a bit closer. I would definitely show for Jump Point. Perhaps I'll make the trip next year. Also, I am not seeing you come up in my feed. Don't know if it's me or your channel but I have to search for your videos.
Timely video. I just ordered the 2nd edition 2022 revision a few days ago. Been using 1977 Traveller and probably still will, but I'm curious to see what the new version is like.
Would love to attend Jump Point, but it's too far a run for me. Out of curiosity, have you considered any online venues (Fantasy Grounds or Roll20 for instance) to extend your reach?
Would the humble bundle alone be a great place to start for an entire campaign or at least for a while? Im not sure if my friends will enjoy the game so I dont want to dump too much money into the game just yet, but I purchased the bundle and have been doing a ton of research on the game and starting my campaign.
What is the reason that Traveller isn't the D&D of Sci-Fi? I've never played this but scifi is my genre of choice so I need help determining if I dive in. Is it a heavy system? Can it easily run settings like Star Trek, Star Wars, Firefly, Babylon 5, Farscape? Is it mechanics or Setting, or storytelling focused? I'm grateful for any help, thank you.
It's a system that is a crunchy as you want it. Basically, you roll 2d6 to make skill checks modified by skills and physical attributes. You have to make a number ( usually around 8) on the 2d6. It lends itself to roleplaying very nicely.
@@page121tabletoproleplaying4Thanks. Is the setting similar to Star Trek where the fantasy elements are low, Star Wars where the mystical is high, or like Starfinder where it's basically fantasy in space

Good video, I would rate Central Supply Catalog higher, but still great.
Gonna be checking out that Humble bundle for sure.

I enjoyed it a LOT. Second his recommendation. Also commenting for the algorithm 🤓
Never cared for the setting as it's deviated so far from what I like in Traveller. Anything good in there to steal for other settings?

Mongoose has done a few of those for Traveller 2nd. Far Future Enterprises does one once in a while for the older Traveller stuff.

Humble Bundle would be a great place to start. Pirates of Drinax is a true sandbox.
What’s the best way to find people to play with? I’m in Houston and coming over from wargaming.
Some folks post online. We got a few members of our group through a posting at a local game store.
