If you just listen to the song without the visuals, you'll realise every note has its purpose and the showmanship is simply his unique expression of that note. Absolute legend.
I like to play these songs. And I’ll let you know to nail every nuance and bend and dive and pluck, takes me about a year to be able to play them fluently. And that is in the best environment under controlled situations. And I still don’t nail them every time, Steve is not only an amazing player, writer, producer, but he revolutionized guitar playing with his signature model guitars that when he produced them, nobody had 24 Fretz nobody had floating tremolos. Nobody had a five way switch that five ways, he changed all of our lives to the better, and made the world more magical place
After his stint with David Lee Roth he was well versed in the art of being an entertainer as well as a top notch musician. I've met him 3 or 4 times and he's a really nice , down to earth guy. Not a cut up but has a good sense of humor.
Off stage Steve Vai is just a guy. No performative vibe, no rock star persona. Just a dude. Not kidding. If any of the rest of us could play half as well, we'd have trouble fitting our skulls through a door for all the ego we'd carry around with us.
I didn't know this wasn't live ( he was finger syncing ) until I read an interview where he talked about having to rehearse to get the fingerings exactly like the album for the camera. That way they could use the existing Alien Love Secrets album audio. On the cover of my old VCR tape the wording is careful. They call it a matching video to the album, and say he and the drummer and bassist "perform" the songs, rather than say you were watching him play the songs live - though he probably was - but we were actually hearing the album.
I’m not a guitar player and only know Steve Vai from hearing his name on radio commercials when he would come to town for guitar conventions and whatnot. After watching his UA-cam channel, I’m certain he’s fully aware of how silly his theatrics are. He seems like such a nice, genuine, often self deprecating guy on his YT vids from home.
I hate to break it to ya, but this is the music video, not a live performance. He's mimicking his guitar part, you're hearing the album track. That's not taking away anything from Steve, he's my favorite guitar player. Period. In a genuine live performance, he feels it just as hard, with less hair touching 😊
Watch "Teeth of the Hydra" if ypu want to see Steve play a custom 3 neck guitar with a harp attached to it, a 12 string, a bass and a 6 string. Oh and the 12 and bass are both half fretless. Nobody but Steve could possibly pull it off.
I just watched Steve Vai play this song live on 4/20. And also got to see Satriani play "Flying In A Blue Dream" that night lol. Im glad u got to see Joe live while he is still playing.
The expressionism in his performance is very primal. The song is "tender surrender", a song clearly very sensual, very sexual, very primal. Why should his performance be anything less than exactly that? "For the love of god" is another very well written composition of his which has a vastly different performative expression. As a content creator, writer and lover of music, I'm of the mind that every performance should be befitting of the song and emotion brought forth in it, making each song and performance unique unto itself.
I've always taken this song as kind of a middle finger and a kick in the balls of other Guitarist's as, "Oh Yeah? what you got?"... How can you watch this as a Guitarist, knowing you could NEVER replicate this on your best day. Les Paul ~ Jimi Hendrix ~ Steve Vai ~ 3 Names you should know in Music History...
With how many times Steve Vai has been on the cover of guitar magazines or featured/hailed elsewhere, I honestly wouldn't have believed there existed pro guitarists who hadn't checked him out before
@stezenast5878 in this era there are many guitar players that have never picked up a guitar magazine and especially if they more into blues or acoustic playing they might have just not heard Steve Vai believe it or not.
Very cool. Gotta love Vai. I've seen him in Zappa performances and he was young and still learning to be performative, but then later when he joined David Lee Roth he got a crash course in how to play to a large audience, which he carried into Whitesnake, and then his solo work. For the Love of God is a great next step for Sam, and I would also suggest Candle Power, Greenish Blues, Sisters, Whispering a Prayer, or Blue Powder, just to lean into the bluesier tunes.
Hello thank you theses are amazing suggestions, Greenish Blues is a really interesting track and Candle Power I need to come back to that one. I love that Halloween performance of Zappa's band with Steve Vai, 1981 I think it was. So great to hear those complex arrangements but with a guitar player that could keep up with those crazy difficult parts. Zappa really got something out of Vai that many no other guitarist could have provided back then. Thanks for watching the video.
@@JackJenningsGuitarist I also saw him playing in Zappa's band around 1979 /1980 at Hammersmith Odeon as I recall. He was young but a very noticeable member of the band. Frank gave him the chance to really let rip on a few of the solos during the show and they also played off each other a fair bit. I remember thinking he was amazing back then - but then to be in the Zappa band......you kinda had to be 🙂
omg i love this reaction , this live performance of his is very comical indeed hahah top notch playing but very funny he almost emote sexual experession in real time haha
Richie Blackmore should listen to this so he can finally admit just because Vai is technically the greatest guitar player to ever touch a guitar, he also does it with feeling.
Hi Guys, Apologies if you have already seen it, but if not, please react to Tina S cover of Dragonforce - Through the Fire & Flames, she was 15 when she recorded it, Even Herman Li has reacted to it, and said it was the best cover!! She also has a cover of Steve Vai - For the Love of God, which is just as good.
You gotta show Sam this Vai performance. Imo this is his best live performance. "For the Love of God" G3 live: ua-cam.com/video/mDZuNM3HmU4/v-deo.htmlsi=OGkEVgFrMwVAfNiO
when i first heard this song then saw Alien Love Secrets at the end everything made sense. this must be what aliens sound like having sex or pterodactyluss. idk.
All the same spot off comments from other reaction videos for the same song lol . This wasn't a performance. This was putting the closest live version with the studio track
Absolutely astonishing. You can laugh all you want, but i've seen Steve live 3 times. I don't know anyone who holds a candle to him. Your only defense is laughter or homage when faced with someone vastly superior to you. You chose laughter. What a shame...
@samuelgutierrez3184 you do realise that people can laugh because they're actually enjoying something. I laugh when I watch Hendrix and he's the reason I play guitar. It's not laughing in defence, but in celebration🎸🤣🙌❤️
Of all guitar styles, blues is the only one that makes you feel something. The technical fast stuff is an impressive flex, but lacks the ability to reach he soul.
It's so scripted because it is, Vai said he would just improvise a bunch of stuff over the backing and then picked out interesting stuff off the recordings and then stitch them together.
Funny thing about the hair; you can see it's actually in his face, so he's trying to be performative so nobody knows he hates the haircut. LOL His hair when longer,; you can see he doesn't do that. Bet this footage bugs the sh*t out of him.
So you're pro's? Honestly? You don't appear to know a lot! Days were when musicians were performers. Who would want to pay a fortune to watch a static plank on stage? - just buy the record! He's an entertainer and a real pro unlike some pretenders who ain't fully cooked yet!

A rip-off of Hendrix's Villanova Junction which has a more beautiful melody and interesting tonal quality. To my ear, fast streams of notes are not very interesting and musically boring!
If you just listen to the song without the visuals, you'll realise every note has its purpose and the showmanship is simply his unique expression of that note. Absolute legend.

There are no words to describe this level of talent… Steve Vai is a fucking genius

Oh course it's performative. He's a freakin' Rock Star! :)
The guitar needed a cigarette after this performance and might just possibly be pregnant now.

Flying In A Blue Dream and Whispering A Prayer are two of the most beautiful sounds I've ever heard from a guitar, especially Whispering A Prayer.

I've always thought the angry Donald Duck singing at the end was intentional. It makes me smile every time, I love it.
