  • So see my Spotlight: PS1 First Person Shooters video go here: • Spotlight: PS1 First P...
This is a quick rundown of the First Person Shooters I own for the Nintendo 64. I have a pretty good list of them, and I would say that Quake is the biggest omission on this list of games.
The N64 has a wonderful library of FPS games, and while, there will be no surprises here for N64 fans, there may be some that new collectors may have overlooked, or don't know about.
Dang it, it looks like I missed an entire paragraph in the Turok 2 portion that eplains my complaint of having to restart the level if you make it to the end of the level, and miss an objective. The real question is, do I just leave it, or do I re-edit it? argh! this is what happens when I get caught up in editing.
Here is the full Turok 2 blurb as I was supposed to add it to the video:
    Turok 2: Seeds of Evil
If I remember correctly, the developers of this game were quoted as saying that every level in Turok 2 is the equivalent of walking six virtual miles. Turok 2 improved over the original in many ways. Better graphics thanks to the expansion pack, bigger levels, an actual storyline, split screen multiplayer, and cooler weapons like the cerebral bore.
To be honest, I still have yet to fully play through this one either. Not only have I had fun playing around with the cheats as I did with the original, there is one incredibly demotivating design choice that has always kept me from fully playing this game. I don't even remember how far I have played into it over the years, as I tend to delete my save in order to make room on my N64 memory card for other games. What has kept me from being motivated from seeing this one all the way through is simply that, in each level, Adon starts out by giving you the level objectives you have to complete. Taking a que from Goldeneye, Turok 2 switched to objective-based missions. What demotivates me every time I decide, “This time I'm going to do it. I will see it though this time!” is the simple fact that, if you miss one of the objectives in the level, you get knocked right back to the beginning of the level and have to start again. The objectives you have already completed are still completed, but you have to retread to find, say, that one missing child you did not rescue.
So you just walked through six virtual miles of gameplay, and if you missed even one thing, you have to do it all over again. Whereas in the original Turok, even if you did not find every key in each level, you would usually still find enough keys to unlock a new level, so you did not have to replay the level you just played right then, in Turok 2, you are basically stuck in limbo until you complete the level. This kind of kills all my motivation to see this game all the way through, and it does it every time. I know this can be remedied by not sucking at the game, but if you miss one thing, no mercy shall be applied, you have to start right from the beginning of the level again. There is no grace
My only other slight quip about this game is that, while the game does look great running in the high-rez mode, and even the high-rez leterbox mode, thanks to the expansion pack, if you want it to be playable, and not sluggish, you still have to play it in low-rez mode as the high-rez mode make the game chug. The fog doesn't bother me as much as it bothers others.
I don't mean to sound overly critical, because I still really like this game, and do suggest it to all N64 fist person gamers, just be warned, there are some frustrating design choices. That being said, I am totally going to see this game through one of these days.

Feel the same way about Perfect Dark. I got it too late in the N64’s life to put the time into it that it deserved. The next gen was already in full swing.

Doom 64 isn’t fully polygonal. Its enemies are 2D sprites like the original. That said, I really loved it. It kept all that makes Doom Doom, but bumped up the tech/atmosphere.

Yeah, I should have clarified the levels were. I've gotten better at clarifying things, and trying to get rid of residency in my writing. There is definitely a tough balance between working full time, and getting the scripting and voice over done. I need to proofread better, but I pretty much just use my first draft, because I basically have one day off to voice it over, and edit the video.

I think the nostalgia and the more simplistic level design may be why you like it more but Perfect Dark is without a doubt an amazing fps and top on the system along with Turok 2,Golden eye and Quake
Def want to try Quake 2 and 007 WinE.
Love your opinion on Turok! My reaction to the games awesome was similar minus the motion sickness.
The Turok HD versions are so much more playable. Im loving it.

I remember the first level in perfect dark but I'm going to buy it tonight or tomorrow on Xbox and beat it again because I felt as though I had more fun campaigning through prefect dark over GoldenEye but I actually do remember the campaign better for GoldenEye, one thing I'll give to GoldenEye is that it actually does have the best back story out of any James Bond ever made even if the movie wasn't the best movie, if you go into the history of (Trevlon) if that is how you spell his name, if you look at history the way I do then you would actually see him as the good guy and James bond as the bad guy....

I love the showcase of horrible war crimes commited by Bond on soviet soldiers at the start of the video XD I can only wonder how inspection of the base went after Bond's departure - piles of bodies shot to oblivion inside, and whole courtyard filled with mangled corpes crushed to death by tank. Typical Bond, a man of culture.
Also, for me when it comes to DooM games WITHOUT mods, DooM 64 is my favourite one by a large margin - amazing title that feels like modern boomer shooter (and i only learned about it existence in last few years).

Doom 64 is definitely awesome. I own it on steam now as well as on the N64. As for Mr Bond, he's definitely a man of culture and style. Stylistically turning those soviet soldiers into piles of red goo, as I can imagine someone ran over by a tank would look. Or maybe into a red gooie throw rug.

My top 5 MUST OWN, MUST PLAY, BEST FPS on the N64 with expansion pak:
    1. Perfect Dark 64
    2. Goldeneye 64
    3. TWINE
    4. Quake II
    5. Turok 2 SoE
Top 5 FPS that are sub-par (fun but not needed to own):
    1. Turok
    2. Duke Nukem 3D 64
    3. Doom 64
    4. ShadowGate 64 (RPG but still FPS visuals and dark music make this amazing)
    5. Turok 3

    Great job.👍
I also never finished Turok 1&2 in a proper fashion.
As much as I liked huge levels, particularly in Turok 2,I almost as much hated them.
Save pyramids were to far from each other.
    But there are fortunately cheats.😃
    To think,magazines were including cheatcodes.
    Those were fun times.
Today cheats are unwelcomed even on oflayn play.
    Shame.
I paid for Doom 64 insane amount of money.
    Game was good,but not great.
Duke Nukem 64 was also preaty good, though I don't remember if I finished it.
    Quake 2 was amazing.
I remember some PC players complaining for having to much colors or some such nonsence.
    Really great with expansion pack.
I don't remember if I finished Turok Rage Wars, but it was Ok I suppose.
I did finish Turok 3 however.
    Very good game it was.
Golden Eye 007 was excellent, but as you said a bit overrated.
I sucked in multiplayer and a frame rate of amazingly high 15fps or lower(when 4 player multiplayer) didn't really motivate me to practice it.
I prefer Perfect Dark, but not by much.
I played Hexen on a friend's PC and it was mostly great, but terrible reviews of Hexen 64 made me give up the idea of buying N64 version.

I, personally, believe Turok 1 and 2 beat out 3. The 3rd entry had some great things that I love about it. I liked that Joseph and Danielle played differently, from their weapons to their movements. I liked that they updated the options menu, so that you could remove the annoying center look option. I liked the epic boss fights. While many other shooters will have you fight a chopper, none will have you fight a chopper... in quite the same way.
But the overly linear levels, omission of the "I AM TUROK" scream, and seemingly hit-scanning enemies, make this a bit less fun for me. It seemed more luck based than the other two games, at least in my playthrough. Then again, maybe I suck. :P
Also... it really should have been Co-Op.
The shooting in the 2nd and 3rd games feels... off, somehow. I think they tweaked it in some way that made it less smooth than shooting in the original Dinosaur Hunter, but a fair few N64 shooters feel off in the same way to me. I can't quite pinpoint it. Maybe it's just me.
Anyhow, props for ending the video with "I AM TUROK!" I see you are a man of culture as well. :P

I completely disagree with you. I think Turok 2 is the best Turok game in the franchise and it's easily the most fun I've had since the original Turok. Those long and challenging maps is what makes the game both fun and mind bending so when you do play it again, you will remember where that key was or where the child was that you missed. Turok series is an amazing franchise that I would love to go back and play again.

How does everyone go about the situation with those atrocious N64 analog sticks? Can't stress enough how much I hate them, all of the used controllers have that white powder on the stick from the bowl having been ground to dust over time. That controller is designed to fail inevitably, unlike the PS1 pad. And of course all of these games need the stick. It seems that a Hori Mini is my only chance for getting into this system in this lifetime, but so far I couldn't justify shelling out 100 bucks for an imported one from Japan.

    • @DookieCakes
      @DookieCakes  7 років тому +1

I call that the Mario Party effect. I know other games, or just general wear and tear can destroy the sticks too, but there is a reason why I will never add Mario Party to my N64 collection, because it destroys controllers.

Well done for recognising Goldeneye is overrated.
Turok 1 and 2 are far superior to 3. Play them properly without cheating, cheater!
Turok 2's objectives are essentially the same as Turok 1's. Find 5 children, or find five keys. If you don't find them all, you can't progress. So saying you can't get into turok 2 because of it despite enjoying 1 is unusual.
The Turok series' lives system is great in combination with checkpoints and save stations is great design, and the platforming really only problematic in one level (those goddamn pillars).
Yes, Duke Nukem's lack of music really lets the game down.
