Put the power control on standby and turn it off. Press/hold the panel button and turn it on. Once the fx/boost lights start flashing, release it. When only the panel button flashes, it's done. Just make sure you only copy the two files to the amp and not the folder.
I don't have problem connecting the Katana Gen3 with the USB cable but when I try to connect it using Boss Bluetooth Audio MIDI Dual Adapter, my laptop can't find it. It works with my iPhone but not with my laptop... Is it only working with iPhones & Tablets but not with laptop?
I hear ya. I didn't mind because it gave me a reason to make this video really quick, but I didn't want to have to do it right out of the box. The good thing is you don't need tone studio on a PC to update it, so if you can borrow a friends laptop or something to get it done. Hopefully they won't have any more firmware updates any time soon.
After i do the standbuy, then power on while holding the tap button for the red blinking lights, i plug in my usb c but windows does not recognize my amp Whatso ever, ive tried multiple cables that do work as i have tested them on other devices, but windows just cant seem to recognize that an amp is plugged in, Is it an issue with the amp itsself?
You can use just about any USB-C cable that supports power and data transfer. It also depends on your computer. If you have something like a MAC that only has USB-C or a Windows PC with USB-C, then you need a USB-C to USB-C like this: amzn.to/49Aq4dn . If you have a PC with regular USB 2.0 or higher, then you need a USB-C to USB-A like this. amzn.to/3ZTGf2t
Question!! I know your are the MOST honest and knowledgeable person . So will the old boss katana mk2 100 patches work on the New boss katana artist gen 3? Or if your upgrading is it best to stay with the boss katana mk2 100 gen 3? Basically do they all share patches or not ? I am sure you understand where I am going with this. No one has talked about that specifically..
Old patches work with new Katanas, but new patches don't work with old Katanas. So Gen 3 can use Mk 1 & 2 patches, but Gen 3 patches won't work on Mk 1 & 2 Katanas.
@@Guitarnivore got it makes sense What about the artist gen 3? Does there patches only work with artist patches? I own an mk2 100 not sure if it’s worth getting artist gen 3. I don’t want to loose my stuff . So basically does old mk2 patches work with artist gen 3? Or is artist gen 3 a separate entity? Also can you use the artist gen 3 as a master and old mk2 100 as a slave together?
@@cgh1026 I don't see any reason why Boss whould stray from their norm and not make the mk2 patches compatible with all models. The Artist still uses the same firmware (1.06) as the Gen 3 100 combo and I've been using all of my patches from the Mk2, some that I created on the Artist when I had it.

I updated my firmware on my katana 100 gen 3. Now my MIDI does not want to connect to my phone in the tone studio app. I can connect to it with my pc though. Any suggestions?
Thank you for this. Absolute shit show that Boss brings out a new product that you need to upgrade from the get go lol. I may just go back to tubes and to hell with the neighbours!
My blue tooth adapter i put on my gen 3 50ex will connect to the app and allow me to make adjustments. But I can't play any audio thru the speaker it's self like a backing track using any platform like UA-cam or spotify. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?
On your phone/tablet did you pair it with "KATANA 3 Audio" as well as the "KATANA 3 MIDI"? If you only have the Midi paired, you have to pair the Katana 3 Audio in order for audio playback to work. Midi is for the app and Audio is for the music/video playback.
I am struggling. I followed all the steps, but when I plug my katana to my pc, the katana 3 drive does not appear. I am stuck and don't know what to do ):
please help! when trying to drag the files into the Katana, i get an error window saying the drive is write protected. How do I change this so I can update the amp?!
I have not seen that error. All I can suggest is to ensure that you follow the steps exactly and ensure that you have the Katana in USB mode and you're copying the correct files. All else fails, you may have to contact Boss/Roland support.
I just got the 100/212 Gen 3 Katana. When I went to hook it up to my pc I noticed there is no usb b (printer) port, only a usb c for stereo out. How do I update this amp without any ports?
@@Guitarnivore I was hoping you would say that! I think the issue is that the cable I tried to use is not a data cable, just a charging cable. Thank you for that extremely fast response. I was honestly about to pack this thing up and ship it back lol I suppose I'll pick up the bt adapter as well.
I have a huge tutorial video for the Mk 2. The principles are the same and it's chaptered out so you can skip around to what you need to know. I'll do a video later on for.loading patches from the phone app. ua-cam.com/video/cThJ9cwZdwo/v-deo.htmlsi=OIhVEM4udFoQGIOB

Hello, when I make my amp on usb mode, and I then plug the usb c into my computer, nothing shows up. There is no detection whatsoever. Do you know the fix for this? Thanks for the help man
Have you noticed that the mobile version of BTS has a limit of 20 tones in a liveset but the PC version has a limit of 15 tones in a liveset? So sharing a liveset from the mobile version to the PC version results in truncation of the last 5 tones. Kinda makes you wonder what the Boss QC department was doing the day they were supposed to check for these kinds of things.
First time hearing this and honestly, it doesn't surprise me. They have a lot of bugs to work out before I'll actually buy one...if I actually buy one. Lately I've been thinking I might just buy an ME-90 in the future and use it through the power amp in of my MK2.
@@Guitarnivore I still have my MK2 Head, as well as the box and packing for the Gen 3. I'm considering returning the Gen 3. I wouldn't take delivery of a car with only 3 wheels in the hope the manufacturer will send me the fourth. I apply the same reasoning to this amp. I expect what I paid for, nothing less.
I would start over by doing a factory reset and then start the process over again. It sounds like you may have copied the whole folder into the amp instead of the two files.
Cant believe it needs updating already, a few bugs in there eh boss? I had to update my mk1 twice, its fiddly if your not used to windows crap, never needed a computer untill i had a katana, although for 99% of the time i use the brilliant nuca jery katana amp app on android
This was when it first came out too. Most of the time firmware updates are to add new features, but this one was a few bugs. I feel like it still has some bugs they need to work out. Other than that, it's still a great amp, but they really need to find a way to make the firmware update over bluetooth or something easier. They've had 8 years.
Yeah, I wouldn't sweat it. The only reason I got one so quickly is because I'm obviously a fan, I got one from zZounds to review and as a youtuber, it's good to get on top of new products, especially while people are still trying to decide. The Artist is the best of the best and still very relevant.
You may have missed a step somewhere. Make sure you have the right firmware and you copy just the two files (txt and bin files) from your computer to the amp during that step.

@@outermarker5801 I hear ya. I was going to get the gen3 50, but I liked the other options on the head and the internal speaker is actually pretty good.
This is ridiculous! Make it like the katana air. Turn BT on. Pair device. Rock on. I'm taking my katana 100 gen 3 back. Lmk when you go back to what works. I'll buy one when you do.
Nah I’ll take back the little Bluetooth piece ! Yeah I have the waza air headphones and katana air it’s super easy pairs fast ! This really sucks I guess they want you to buy extra boss pedals !!😮
Should it be a simpler more automated process like orher amps? Yes. But it's really not that hard, takes mere minutes.
Ain’t rocket science
Scott youre the man, after reading all the comments sounds like Boss should be paying you. Their instructions and support dept. sucks. I appreciate the video, made it easier. But still wont connect. Think i tried to many times. How do i factory reset? Im sure i can figure this out, only been messing with this for days now, lol
Put the power control on standby and turn it off. Press/hold the panel button and turn it on. Once the fx/boost lights start flashing, release it. When only the panel button flashes, it's done. Just make sure you only copy the two files to the amp and not the folder.
Legend 🤘
I don't have problem connecting the Katana Gen3 with the USB cable but when I try to connect it using Boss Bluetooth Audio MIDI Dual Adapter, my laptop can't find it. It works with my iPhone but not with my laptop... Is it only working with iPhones & Tablets but not with laptop?
Yeah, that's how it was designed, although I have heard of people connecting the Katana Air to their laptops, but I was never successful at that.
@@Guitarnivore Thank you very much for your answer. So I need to keep my laptop plugged to the Katana.
@@gerardvachez3116 Yes. but only when using Tone Studio.
Life saver!
Thank you so much.
Life saver :D
So annoying….i bought the gen 3 and Bluetooth adapter because I don’t have a pc. Now I find that my BRAND NEW AMP needs an upgrade!!!!!!
Me too! Why in the hell didn’t the GEN three come updated for the Bluetooth. Stupid tech people. I’m a guitarist, not a flippin computer junkie.
Have you tried downloading/installing the driver first?
Can you still use old patches saved from Boss katana mk2 100?
Also thanks for making this video!!!
Much appreciation and respect!!
Yes, the Gen 3 is backwards compatible, but Gen 3 patches won't work with the mk1 or 2.
Can someone PLEASE post a link to the correct usb cable for the boss katana-50ex gen3 ?
You can use just about any USB-C cable that supports power and data transfer. It also depends on your computer. If you have something like a MAC that only has USB-C or a Windows PC with USB-C, then you need a USB-C to USB-C like this: amzn.to/49Aq4dn . If you have a PC with regular USB 2.0 or higher, then you need a USB-C to USB-A like this. amzn.to/3ZTGf2t
Struggling doing this on a Mac, is it possible?
Nice video. Haven't gotten one yet but am close. Can I run the Tone Studio via the Blue Tooth adapter on a cell phone?
Yes you can and it works pretty well!
@@Guitarnivore Thanks for the reply!!
What usb do I need for the boss katana mk 2 100 watt I’ve seen ppl say usb 2.0 and ur saying a usb c please help
This is the gen 3, which has USB C. The Mk1 and Mk2 use a regular USB A/B (2.0 or whatever you want to call it). I have other video for the Mk2.
@@Guitarnivore got it makes sense
What about the artist gen 3?
@@Guitarnivore thank you for your time !!! Much appreciated
Thanks, you just saved me a tonne of time. You did a much better job than Boss at explaining this all!
Glad it helped!
I’m stuck downloading on my Mac got the Boss page up etc but it keeps asking me for a downloader password ? I don’t have one..?
That doesn't sound right. Did you use the link in my pinned comment?
@@GuitarnivoreYes mte i did and that’s what came up so i searched on Google for Boss studio gen3 install and basically it came up exactly the same again..
That's really strange, because I went to it both way with my link and searching and it never asks for anything. Try this one. The only thing it asks is to check the box to agree with the TOS and then download. www.boss.info/global/support/by_product/katana-100_gen_3/updates_drivers/
Thanks 👌
Hi I have updated firmaware first to 1.06 so now i can follow the same process and install the tone studio right??
Yes, you'll be good to go to install Tone Studio.
My computer isn't able to connect to the katana via usb cable though
Why not? Did you install the driver?
@Guitarnivore I got it to work just to try a few USB cables. Thanks!
@@Ithorn110 Awesome. So glad to hear!
I updated my firmware on my katana 100 gen 3. Now my MIDI does not want to connect to my phone in the tone studio app. I can connect to it with my pc though. Any suggestions?
Try going into your Bluetooth settings and forgetting the katana and then reconnect. Make sure your app is also up to date.
😅 dang I can't believe i missed that. That worked. Thanks brother.
Do you know if bts is compatible with windows 11 pro?
Yes it's compatible with Windows 11.
I am struggling. I followed all the steps, but when I plug my katana to my pc, the katana 3 drive does not appear. I am stuck and don't know what to do ):
Check that the Gen 3 driver is installed. Sometimes it will install automatically and sometimes not.
let me know if you figured it out I’m going through the same thing. It says the driver is installed but doesn’t appear when i click on my pc.
I can’t figure it out at all and I’m so confused
Is this a different USB cable?
Yes. It's USB-C on the amp end.
please help! when trying to drag the files into the Katana, i get an error window saying the drive is write protected. How do I change this so I can update the amp?!
I have not seen that error. All I can suggest is to ensure that you follow the steps exactly and ensure that you have the Katana in USB mode and you're copying the correct files. All else fails, you may have to contact Boss/Roland support.
@@Guitarnivore worked by just changing to another PC. so weird.
@@felipezam That is odd. Glad you got it worked out.
I just got the 100/212 Gen 3 Katana. When I went to hook it up to my pc I noticed there is no usb b (printer) port, only a usb c for stereo out. How do I update this amp without any ports?
The USB-C port is for connecting to your computer.

So how do I actually use the patches on the amp. I feel stupid but I can’t figure it out and I’m going insane.
I followed all the stuff and it still doesn’t work for me I don’t know why
Did you get it figured out? The typical problems are people download the wrong software for the computer, copy the whole firmware folder to the amp or the wrong USB cable. Some USB cables are power only and you need to ensure you have one that transfers data as well.
@@Guitarnivore I'm gonna try again today because I think I might've downloaded the wrong one I'm not sure. I'll look more into the Usb stuff I have just a regular usb c to a.
@@Guitarnivore Yeah it still doesn't work for me
@@zi4guitar Just confirming, you updated the firmware first? When you open Tone Studio, does it happen to say for Mk II at the top?
@@zi4guitar FYI: There has been a new firmware update since I made this video, so the instructions in the video stating how to check whether you are up to date or not, may be outdated. Hello, when I make my amp on usb mode, and I then plug the usb c into my computer, nothing shows up. There is no detection whatsoever. Do you know the fix for this? Thanks for the help man
I'm not sure what's going on, but if you have the blue tooth adapter and it's connected to your phone, I would unpair it first.
@@GuitarnivoreI might just return it and find a new one, nothing is working. Thanks for your help dude
I hear ya!

is it possible to connect Boss Katana 50 Gen 3 to a smartphone via USB?
The Tone Studio app only works over Bluetooth. Otherwise you'll have to wait until they update the Katana Librarian App for Gen 3.
@@Guitarnivore thanks
Did you mean "If you have the latest version the far left will be green, the next two will be dark, and the next two will be green."?
This video is like 5 months old. There has been one update since then, so I was probably right back then. I don't know.
my katana is just blinking red on the update part i have a katana 50 mk3 is that normal?
I would start over by doing a factory reset and then start the process over again. It sounds like you may have copied the whole folder into the amp instead of the two files.

This was when it first came out too. Most of the time firmware updates are to add new features, but this one was a few bugs. I feel like it still has some bugs they need to work out. Other than that, it's still a great amp, but they really need to find a way to make the firmware update over bluetooth or something easier. They've had 8 years.
Frustrated because I bought the artist series one about a year ago and now they have a better version..
I think your good. Not much updated on the new version you can't do on yours.
Yeah, I wouldn't sweat it. The only reason I got one so quickly is because I'm obviously a fan, I got one from zZounds to review and as a youtuber, it's good to get on top of new products, especially while people are still trying to decide. The Artist is the best of the best and still very relevant.
It dont work 😢
You may have missed a step somewhere. Make sure you have the right firmware and you copy just the two files (txt and bin files) from your computer to the amp during that step.
Can’t do it from your phone… what year are we living in? Lol you should be able to do this from your phone.
I completely agree!
This is so tedious and complicated like why so hard it’s like u have to be a professional??
Boss is a shit show and I'm really close to just returning the amp and pedal.
Did you get it updated? I chaptered out the video to better understand.
Огромное спасибо вам за видео, установил все с первой попытки
