    I’m back with another What I Eat in a Day Review and this week I’m reviewing a fellow Canadian girl, Rose of Cheap Lazy Vegan. She’s got lots of videos for vegan recipes, meal prep, what I eat in a day, and vegan mukbangs videos which I find problematic but ill save that rant for another time. So let’s get on to the review, with one of her most recent What I Eat in a Day videos.
    Fun fact, a recent study was done looking at weight gain over the holidays, and no surprise, weight does increase, but just like 1.3 pounds. Honestly, I wouldn’t stress about this. IIf you go into the holidays with a cheat day or I guess a cheat season mentality, then you’re bound to eat past your satiety cues and then spend the rest of the year restricting in an effort to make up for it.
    She’s not doing some sort of crazy diet, not fasting until late, she’s just intuitively waiting for her body to wake up and start feeling hungry! if it works for her it works for me.
    This is so much better than grabbing all of the different bags and scooping and portioning out each ingredient. I mean, there are a LOT of expensive supplements in here, so this smoothie definitely isn’t cheap Ms. Cheap Lazy Vegan, but I’m sure its satisfying. And I love that she has included a lot of protein from the powder and the hemp seeds, it’s got the healthy fats and Omega 3’s from the chia and flax seeds, lot’s of antioxidants, and it’s even a great source of iron which can sometimes be difficult to plan into a plant-based diet.
    I love the focus on getting in lots of greens and vegetables. They are great sources of fibre, calcium, Vitamin A, Vitamin K, and folate. Chinese broccoli even has some omega-3 ALA content so YAY.
    Steaming is great if you’re trying to save some calories without cooking with oil, and it’s a better option than boiling to retain more of the nutrients.
    I love how Rose always makes sure to get a satiating source of protein in. Soy tends to get a bad rep- there’s all sorts of theories about it causing cancer, or thyroid problems, or even messing with fertility. However, there’s a lot of research that shown health benefits of soy, even for non-vegans.
    One thing I love about this recipe that Rose is showing is that it has a variety of cooking methods- she’s steaming the vegetables, pan frying the tofu, and boiling some noodles.
    Overall, I’d say Rose’s diet is really well balanced and well thought out.
    Her diet is really high in fibre and she’s getting about 50 g on this day. She’s also getting in good sources of omega 3 even without the supplement, and she’s meeting her calcium, iron, and B vitamin requirements that are sometimes the hardest to get on a fully vegan diet. Because of the variety of protein sources, she is consuming, she’s also getting all of her 9 essential amino acids- which if you didn’t know, soy is one of the only plant-based source of protein that contains all of the essential amino acids.
    Here's what I like about Rose’s WIEIAD:
    Her recipes are simple and delicious
    She uses a variety of ingredients
    She sends out positive food and nutrition vibes

      As far as I know Abbey is happy as long as it feels good for you, you still get all the nutrition you need and not restrict yourself into unhealthy eating habits. A lot of "intermitted fasting" youtubers also go crazy on other restrictions, be it calories, no carbs, no oils or fully raw or sth...

      Her diet is mostly plant based anyway. All her 'what I eat in a day' videos are like about 90% WFPB. She also has plenty of vegan recipes. If you want an entire day of vegan meals, you might be out luck considering her history with orthorexia, her emphasis on intuitive eating, and her busy schedule.

      Bissilife and Odie eggplants and regular potatoes must be cooked or steamed! Mushrooms barely have any nutrition anyways, but I guess cooked is better haha. But sweet potatoes are closer related to carrots than to actual potatoes and they are perfectly fine raw! I really do like them :)

    • @user-ee7kb6sf5g
      @user-ee7kb6sf5g 5 років тому +69

      She probably thinks its problematic because it's kind of promoted as a big binge session. Most people order a ridiculous amount of food for mukbangs

    • @WindXadepts
      @WindXadepts 5 років тому +48

      It's most likely because it encourages people to binge eat food for both YT income and popularity. It's a bad gateway for people with food addictions, Nikado Avocado is one of those changes that is pretty impactful. Tho vegan Mukbanging isn't nearly as bad as those eating 10 dinner boxes from maccas, overeating is always bad.

    • @LB-ks1yd
      @LB-ks1yd 5 років тому +5

      Also a lot of the ones I’ve seen that aren’t by like mukbang channels they order a bunch of food but then they eat a pretty normal amount or maybe a little more than a normal amount, they just order a bunch of food then save the rest, which they shouldn’t force themselves to overeat but I can see why it would be problematic or even triggering

      @K Nana yeah its just become that it involves huge portions, it didnt originate that way

    • @yun-pg8cr
      @yun-pg8cr 5 років тому +11

      at first it was bc people didn’t want to eat alone so they livestreamed usually a big lunch (contrary to what people say, but it’s more customary to eat bigger portions to avoid snacking in some countries) but the main purpose was to avoid loneliness with a hectic schedule, and people tipped them during those livestream, but American (youtubers) love sensationnalism and consumerism so it ended up being huge amount of different dishes almost like a challenge, it also lost the core idea of it being a livestream bc it’s not a discussion, it’s a monologue with spectators.

      Hannah Edwards oh lord as a fellow Dietitian I have watched her from afar and cannot get on board with what she’s about. She also claimed to be a certified nutritionist, which really has little credibility to it. Her meals/outlook are unbalanced and extreme, and her weight is concerning as well. It’s sad to see people falling for this diet trap, it’s not healthy or sustainable.

    Cool to see a dietician review a vegan diet and be positive about it. There’s a lot of vegans on YT that are nuts and do not eat a balanced vegan diet, and you’re right they don’t eat normal portion sizes for any normal person. It doesn’t shock me that a lot of people recently this year went off a plant based/vegan diet. I’ve been vegan for 4 1/2 years, I’ve always ate intuitively because I always watched these vegan UA-camrs and didn’t understand how they were satiated or felt good ever!

    Also, I sometimes boil my vegetables, but I boil them in the tomato sauce/coconut milk that I'm making my sauce with and then I just add pasta or rice or whatever. That's also really delicious! It just adds more flavour to your sauce and you're not losing those water-soluble vitamins. :)

    I do believe it is highly inaccurate to say that B12 only comes from animals (because if that truly was the case the there wouldn’t be a vegan B12 supplement on the market). B12 is found in the soil and untreated water originally. We live in a sanitized world: we clean our produce, depleted the soil, and treat our water. So much so that animals in the agriculture industry are given a B12 supplement (besides other supplements and antibiotics). The USDA found that over two fifths of the US population is B12 deficient (vegans don’t make up that much of the population), and have said that a lack of meat doesn’t cause a B12 deficiency and eating more meat doesn’t prevent it. They recommend fortified food and supplementation. Even a study in Switzerland that was done recently found that vegans weren’t at an increased risk of deficiencies. I would love to hear your thoughts on the UN report, how certain diets effect the environment, and how the UN recommends a vegan diet to help the environment? Have you also listen to the podcast Nutrition Rounds?

    • @AbbeysKitchen
      @AbbeysKitchen  5 років тому +1

    • @naomiji1306
      @naomiji1306 5 років тому

      Abbey Sharp I get that. I just thought by the way it was phrased that it continue to push peoples misconception about B12 that people have: like that there is only one source, only vegans can be deficient, etc. I do think people should take B12 like vitamin D regardless of diet. Anyway, Can’t wait for the next video. Thank you!

    @Abbey Sharp, I really like what you said about "white washing" on a vegan diet. That is so true! Avacado on toast is delicious, but is not the only vegan food out there! There are so many delicious options to choose from, if you explore other countries and their cuisines. Being an Indian, I can tell you that some of our most delicious dishes are vegan. Even our best junk food is vegan😅 and it's super cheap! I'm non vegetarian and I have nothing against veganism, but I find it a little annoying when veganism becomes all about smoothies and salad bowls and avacado on toast. Also because I don't think that symbolises a fully balanced nutritious diet.

Rose seems to be such a down to earth person, she doesn't judge other people or promote prestigious unreachable things. She actually made me eat more vegan food, just because it looks so damn delicious. She is also one of those youtubers who made me appreciate the Korean cuisine (even though my heritage is Central Asian and not East Asian, I still intuitively crave, cook and eat Korean food on a daily basis, it's simply delicious!). I also love that she has a whole video where she teaches how to cook different kinds of tofu. She, Hot For Food and Unnatural Vegan are my favourite vegan youtubers.
