Finally, a small p/up for folks who have zero need to tow a yacht and only want to brings some mulch home....
Ford has been building this truck senses 2001 look up Ford sport trac this new maverick looks almost identical to the 2010 Ford sport trac
@@nosoyono1081 my mom had the same explorer sport except it wasn't the sport Trac and trust me you wasn't getting no 40 miles a gallon, lucky to get 20 on the highway.
@@nosoyono1081 My ex had a sport Trac and that thing was way too top heavy on turns and got shitty gas mileage. This looks much more functional. But with an in-house built drive train and 1st model year it could end up being a total turd. I hope not.
No kidding. Heck the new 4x4 Rangers are almost as tall as my F150 lol. I can see a lot of people in need of a small truck leaning towards this.
Were you not aware of the Chevy s10, Chevy Colorado, Toyota Tacoma, Nissan Frontier, and Ford Ranger? Some of those have existed since the 90s. Mitsubishi also made a light duty truck at one point.
The Ranger, Tacoma, and Colorado/Canyon are all still purchasable today as well. I don't keep up with Nissan but I know the frontier was made into the 2000s.

He doesn't run around chasing Ford prototypes unlike some other "review" channels so Ford was nice to him lol.
Honestly, I think this thing will be a hit. It’s filling a niche that all other truck makers have left wide open. I though Fords decision to stop making cars was very short sighted and stupid, but with this vehicle coming out, I now understand….
I forgot that they stopped their the car market except the mustang. And not focus of these. Understandable when they can’t make money on it.
@@bohottie Totally. They got room to try something different, like their mach e. then this. I am actually wanting a f150 or similar in class but this price and utility is growing on me for this. but kinda dont want to use that to move around motorcycles.
Don’t forget the Lightning as well. That thing is going to sell like hot cakes. Combined with the Maverick, Ford knows exactly what they’re doing.
I get the feeling I won't be seeing too many of these on the road.
@Bobby Bologna you’re going to see lots of them on the road lol.
The best thing is how they kept boxy truck styling instead of making it look aero and soft like the Ranger & Escape. Im finding myself really wanting this thing now.
YES.
Ditto. And a fully loaded Lariat is still well under 40k. Sign me up
I actually like it surprisingly. If they made a single cab long bed version, then fleets would buy tens of thousands of these. Not a bad price either. Much better than the current Ranger.
If they make a Transit like van with this chassi they would need to dedicate a megafactory just to meet the demand. 40mpg delivery van would be a no brainer for fleets
The ranger is much more capable, towing at 8000 lbs.

I've been complaining for years that entry level trucks are getting too large so I would seriously consider this. Hell its hard to find a used truck for 20k.
that’s facts, especially if it’s a diesel. people wanting 25k for a 20 year old diesel with 200k miles

Remember the Pinto?
In all honesty with destinations charges and dealer fees you're looking more at 21.5k for a base model with steelies. Either way I would still buy one for work. But realistically it's probably going to cost closer to 26k for the one in the video. I was trying to get my wife to like it but she doesn't lmao. This truck is actually genius. A truck for people who don’t need the capability, size, and power of the F-150, but could benefit from the bed and the space. The perfect truck for anyone who isn’t working a job site or towing trailers for a living. It’s affordable, capable and efficient. It’s not a truck, it’s an SUV with a bed, but that doesn’t take away it’s ingenuity. (And stop talking about the Honda Ridgeline, it’s expensive, large, and inefficient, it isn’t really a competitor to this.)
You know what's sad is that it took this long for anyone to make one....

@@Sparkyspage Yep. I ordered an XLT with the 2L ecoboost and FWD. $26k. Can't beat it. You can also get the base XLT with the Ecoboost, AWD, and tow package for the same price. The ecoboost is just over a $1000 in ALL trims. This is the way.
Honestly...Prob the #1 truck I'm most excited for. 🤷♂️. Small truck, affordable, and a gas engine option. I think this will sale like crazy!
I've never owned a truck before, but 40mpg and at least some towing capacity at $20k makes me want this.
That's a good price, probably hard to come by at that price, but even with a few options if it's around 25 that's incredible... Easily a replacement for a sedan.
Bringing back memories of mini trucks from the 90's... Great size, price, and economy.
Agree. This looks great.
Any old sedan can tow 2k lbs lol
@@bob15479 This has a 1.5k lbs payload. The eco-boost version can tow 4k lbs. ANY OLD SEDAN CAN'T DO THAT. Nor can any old sedan get 40mpg.
@@bob15479 you've clearly never towed before. CAN a sedan tow 2k? If set up properly and the driver is experienced yes. I have a civic si and an f150 and after towing with the truck you understand the difference between towing safely and "moving a trailer". An empty trailer in a sedan is like a fully loaded (legally) trailer in a small truck, except the truck has more margin for error.
"Max tow" is a flat trailer of steel, completely different than a camper or tall utility trailer. The bigger the vehicle, the more "planted" you will feel on the road. An f150 feels like a car compared to an f250.
This is a car based truck, it is not for heavy towing. Remember how popular the 80's and 90's minitrucks were? They have a place in the market, it's to replace a commuter car with a more practical vehicle when you don't want a full sized truck.... Even Tacomas have gotten too big for people.
i think they are gonna sell a ton of these to urban utility companies. landscapers, electric workers, delivery guys, etc.
I doubt it , any guy that need a truck buys a real truck any company that delivers in cities use hatchbacks or small SUVs because the need the vehicle to be very small etc.
@@bored2323 I see tons of people driving older small pick-up trucks in Chicago, certainly there is demand for them in dense urban environments. You're right though I doubt any farmers, ranchers, or people involved in heavy construction would opt for this size of truck.
Like a delivery guy, this would be really cool to own.
@@bored2323 I disagree, the amount of people who want some of that truck like versatility and capability without the massive size and starting price of most other trucks is pretty sizable. Some people just need to move a couch now and then, or tow some jet skis, this truck is perfect for that.
Yep my dad is an jack of all trades he uses a Honda ridgeline I remember one time we had boxes and boxes in the back moving from Connecticut to Massachusetts and surprisingly it did it so idk why the ridgeline gets so much hate when it gets small City jobs like landscaping and maintenance done.
This truck is so perfect!!!!! It fits so many actual needs without spending a $100 a week on gas LMAO

@@LRM12o8 I would like to huck my mountain bikes and camping gear in the bed.
This is 100% my dream vehicle. You get the versatility of a truck bed, great gas mileage, and a very affordable price. Amazing.
I ordered mine today as an XLT hybrid with essentially every option. I am keeping my 2014 Silverado Z71 for actual off road and towing. The lost trade in value from the Silverado and the Maverick MSRP still puts me $13-14K under a similarly equipped hybrid F150.
Mind me asking why you're ordering a Maverick, compact truck, when you do have a full size Silverado? What MPG do you get in your truck? Just curious as I am also interested in compact trucks.
@@A_Based_Entity I am getting it as my commuter. I commute 90 miles each way in a pretty remote area of Western Kansas. My Silverado gets around 18 mpg, so this is a huge improvement over that. My current commuter that is due to be replaced is an Equinox and the pricing/mpg on this makes it a great solution.
@@clayscience5626 I absolutely agree that the Maverick is probably the best bang for your buck and MPG is next level! I hope yours will serve you well bud!

The only thing Ford did horribly wrong was they didn't name this truck the Ranger but instead made the Ranger a full-size truck and gave this thing the name of one of Ford's biggest epic car failures.
@@davidp8627 yeah I agree. Could have swapped the names.
Your mistaken if you think this will be the starting price point it will be higher.
And why do you think Ford gave a fully optioned truck for review rather than the $20,000 truck.
The one shown here stickers for around $35,000 but Ford and they guys sponsored by Ford like Doug here want to give the impression the $20,000 truck will look like this one.
@@desiderious1 Almost any vehicle can be optioned into almost double the base price because of the different trims, it just depends on how much a person wants to spend. What's decent is that a lot of base models now come standard with more features now than ever before. Usually a hybrid is an upper trim option, but it's standard here. Nobody expects the whole 9 yards for 20k, but it's pretty good for a starting price.

@@aussie2uGA Tell that to my second gen prius. I've owned it for around 10 years and the only thing that it has ever gotten was oil changes and two sets of tires. Now that it sits at 240k miles on original battery.
Ford licenses hybrid tech from Toyota and honestly if it is anything like the stuff they've been making for the last decade it will have no problem lasting 20-30years with little maintenance. The ford escapes for example nearly have the reliability track record of the rav 4 or honda crv for the last decade.
As someone in the electrical field, a well built VFD easily lasts 2-3 decades and so does the electric motor. And being a Hybrid it doesnt have boost, as why would it need it. Only the 2.0l is an ecoboost, and that is a really reliable and fun engine with tons of power.
I'm actually glad to see the CC slot come back. Had one in my old Focus and thought it was so useless and ended up using it every single day. Already have our Maverick pre-ordered to match my bigger Ford.

This is still overpriced. If you add FX4 to the Maverick...the price gets awfully close to the base model Ranger.

Great review, Doug, thanks for doing this. I have to share that I'm disappointed in how Ford handled the "reservation" process. I submitted a reservation pretty soon after the Maverick was announced, just in case, and was immediately contacted by my local Ford dealer to help me spec out my Transit Connect. Multiple emails, phone calls, text messages...all because I submitted a reservation for the Maverick. When I called back the internet sales manager and told him I wanted a Maverick, he had no idea what I was talking about. I don't know why Ford would pass the leads to dealers already, let alone why they would pass them with bad information...oh well. Damaged my enthusiasm to be honest.

Got my Maverick Lariat preordered in Area 51 w/ luxury lariat package, 4k towing, Offroad package, and Ford 360. So excited.
21:07 Of course, Doug had to take his Ford GT to this shoot
I noticed that too 😂
Must be so much fun for him
I would have too if i had a gt
I was thinking the exact same thing lmao
Get ready to see these things all over the road. They’re gonna sell like hot cakes
@@harbingertheheretic3541 I will
@@harbingertheheretic3541 I would, my GMC Sierra is annoying to drive and park, it's huge. There was nothing like this or I would have bought it 100%, and I was a CONTRACTOR!!!
I want one
@@harbingertheheretic3541 If it has a manual someday, yes. Perfect truck for my RC stuff.
@@harbingertheheretic3541 Why not? It’s cheaper than a civic with options. You’ll pay like 250 a month for one of these. Not bad at all.
Doug's video is the only one I've seen where someone my height actually tells the viewer he fits. Thank you.
How tall is he
@@musclegto In his video I think he states he's 6 foot 4 inches.
I'm looking for a truck or suv next year. How convenient that this video came along. On top of my list. May go to the dealership this weekend to get some additional information
Brother your enthusiasm for cars, most notably their interiors and "quirky features", is unmatched. Bravo, honestly.
Yes sir Mr. Benz.
I'm really glad they didn't over-do the styling with bunch of huge sharp edges and a gaping grill. it's nice and simple and attractive, and it looks like a pretty good all-round budget car.
The best thing about this truck is that if you get the AWD version it's MacPherson Strut in the front and IRS in the rear. If you care about a truck "handling like a car" this is your truck! Can't wait till people start tuning these, they weight 3700lbs. These will be mid-13 second trucks tune only. Ford is killing it.
Thanks Doug. Wife and me have a new F150. Tacoma TRD. Jeep and now a Mav on order. Wife knew i order it. Had no idea what a Maverick was. Showed her your video. Excellent job.
You forgot one big feature. Ford is releasing CAD files so you can 3D print your own accessories.
That's pretty sick
That's beyond sick - it's ingenious. You can print your own replacement body panels and pretty much do anything that isn't completely outlawed by ford lol
I wouldn't have a printer to do that.
Wow, that’s a game changer for the aftermarket and owners. I know some accessory makers have been doing laser scans, but amateur enthusiasts have had to take measurements the old fashioned way. Sure would be nice if other car companies started doing this.
@@-Jethro- For sure , worth the minimal / solid investment for a cheap printer and solid material - you could have a fishing rod holder or a TV stand!
Doug’s Ford GT just sitting there chillin on that hill, such a fine car!
Yup, doug low key flexing there
Clarkson disagrees.
This reminds me of my dad's little 1987 4 cylinder ranger we had back in the day. It was such a fun little truck and we actually pulled a trailer with our lawn mowers on the back. It was a stick shift and had Mag wheels so it was kind of cool looking. Especially in the eighties when everything was kind of wacky looking.
I had just gotten over wanting one, and now you've roped me back in. I don't need a truck or second vehicle at all....
"This truck is clearly aimed at city dwellers who kinda sorta need a truck"
That also applies to most truck owners outside the city.
Yea, so?
And in the 'burbs that want to park it in the garage without folding in the mirrors and the use of spotters...
Yeah, most people just throw 10 grand worth of wheels and tires on it and drive it around. No one really uses a truck to work besides contractors, farmers, and ranchers
The small size, simple infotainment, great gas mileage, and cost of this truck combined is gonna make me buy this even though I don't need it haha. It's gonna sell really really well though
This isn’t a truck. It’s an SUV with a bed for women and soy boys.
Im thinking about getting this truck, seems like an all around great vehicle
Cool early view, thanks! Nice to see the Ford GT just chilling there.
Doug just lowkey flexing with his GT in the background
.... his GT AND his 2 million dollar home
🔥
I came to the comments to say just that lol
This is gonna outsell the overpriced ranger. With the money you have to throw down on a ranger you might as well buy a used f150 with 30k miles on it.
Second hand will always be the best value [especially if you keep a very good eye out]
Except a used F150 with 30k miles on it will cost you the same if not more than buying brand new. The truck market is a big scheme. There are always a bunch of incentives available on pickups. Auto makers play it off like they are going to expire but they just change the name of the incentives and the actual money available is virtually the same. The MSRP on pickups is basically a nonsense number that no one pays. When dealers sell used trucks they continue the narrative that incentives when new are some super limited opportunity when in reality they are baked into the price of every new truck. They will advertise a used price with the MSRP for comparison as if you’re getting a deal. The problem is that price is typically what someone would have actually paid new and sometimes even more. You also have to consider financing rates are often not as good compared to buying new.
Also not convinced this will outsell the ranger. This truck is just too small and too useless. It’s not as if the Ranger is some burly work truck but the Maverick is kind of a joke from a utility and work perspective. A lot of people don’t need a huge payload or tow capacity but they at least want something that can haul more than a couple half loaded suitcases.
@@truckercowboyed2638 You can easily park any full size 1500 pickup in a parking lot. I’m not trying to be rude, but you need practice driving trucks if you find that to be a legitimate limitation.
@@MK4vDubbin dude i drive a semi truck but theres no reason knocking this as useless when lots of people want a truck thats easy to drive....so dont tell me about parking.....ive seen a f150 vs a ranger in a parking lot and it's obvious which is easier to maneuver....
@@truckercowboyed2638 you can park a 150 in a parking lot. Shows you don’t even know what your talking about😕
Nice truck, Love the style, and the interior design, and 40 MPG's omg, I'm very tempted to buy one, however, my 2011 Ranger is still running strong. One thing I wish they would have done was to make it a rear-wheel drive. Its really nice to see small trucks making a comeback.
Looking forward to seeing this in person
It kind of looks like Nintendo designed a truck, but I like it.
This is the most accurate thing I have read about this truck.
I didn't realize how distinct Nintendo's design language was until I read your comment and immediately saw what you meant
Wow...you're right lol
This comment makes me want this truck.
Get one and then repaint it (or get a wrap) with dark grey on the bottom half and a light grey on the top half and then make the lettering red. Then it will look like an original NES.
Would be great if they offered a two-door version of the maverick with a longer bed, especially for us introverts without friends lol
Yup, legit cant remember the last time i needed my back seats, but a couple foot more room? Seems every other week. Plus would make a great small camper like the old school ranger bed campers that were a bed and not much else
Fr. I’m young so i might have a struggle in getting a truck like this but I’d want a two door like the rangers lmao
@@kevin-wo4rs ikr at least I could use the back seats when I am inevitably forced to pick up my younger siblings
Unfortunately it won't happen, as the unibody construction requires there to be sufficient cab length to prevent buckling in the middle. This is why the original Ridgeline truck had the angled bed sides, the Avalanche had its integrated plastic over steel bed "roll bar", and the Santa Cruz and this Ranger have the sloped cab/bed transition. A single cab would not leave enough structure to prevent buckling, as it needs to reach around 50% of the vehicle length. If the cab was not a crew cab, they would need to be body on frame construction. Additionally, this vehicle is marketed towards a segment that likely is using it instead of buying a small sedan or CUV, so likely need the back seat for kids.
Why do people think introverts means loners? That’s not what a introvert is lol.
Been waiting for this....great !

My 7 year old son caught that detail too - which surprised me since I didn't mention it! We never realize how much the kids watch over our shoulder and how much they absorb. It is cool that Doug drives that car around - I love that.
Ford is blowing Chevy out of the water right now.
I'm a Chevy guy and I have to agree
ford is blowing every other car manufacturer out of the water right now. A sign of phenomenal leadership.
C8, but that is all GM has worth buying.
Yep they need to get with it
GM wanted to fail in the market. They gave the new Silverado looks that only a mother could love...🤮
Just preordered one today. Super excited to get it.

@@sallyaguilera9694 yeah that's what he's saying
“No one will buy the base model.” Oh, not so fast Doug. I will definitely be interested in the base model. Have you seen how good this truck looks with those sweet base steelie wheels? The only unknown is how the base interior looks. I haven’t been able to find any pics or videos of it.
No
I seriously may consider the base trim because it’s FWD. that’s all you need for snow.
@@LeDank I don’t know about “all you need” but certainly very capable when equipped with snow tires
pitis2flie, you can Build and Price the Maverick now on the Ford website. There are XL interior shots there.
it's on the ford configurator now. Base interior looks very plain as you can imagine. I agree on the steelies. I'd throw some clips on there to accept some old school dog dishes.
About damn time someone brought back mini-trucks. Hopefully other manufacturers will follow suit. Also 16:57 pretty much all other trucks have that option also. I was doing this back in the early-mid 90s with my Nissan Hardbody.
Doug is the kinda guy that wipes before he shits
Lol
Let me predict truck people: despite being unibody, it's a truck because it's a Ford, but the Ridgeline is still a minivan.
You're right. BUILT FORD TOUGH is great marketing.
Edit: and then this article shows up after I post this. www.motor1.com/news/512545/ford-bronco-sport-roll-hill/
And Avalanche
The ridge line is for someone that doesn’t care if it’s powerfull or not.just want a basic truck
never understood the ridgeline hate, it’s a weird truck, but still a truck. not everyone needs a 1/2 that weighs as much as a 3/4 ton. this will be a good replacement for the old ranger.
The Ridgeline is ugly that's why they dont sell well. They look like a mini van turned truck. That is the issue, honda doesn't understand what truck people want. Ford also knows that if you are going to price a small truck near the same price as a half ton, people will just get the half ton. Also the reason why people stick with the F150. GM has this issue with their Canyon. The Maverick is a smart move on Fords part. Make a good looking truck with a solid yet economical motor that gets good mpg. Sell it at a low price. The interior screams cheap but with good choice on how material was used and placed.
The wife has been wanting a truck but currently drives a prius. Seems like the perfect replacement.
Ford is smart as hell, these will sell like pancakes💪🏼
Ordered mine. Carbonized Grey, XL Trim, Full Size spare, bed mat, interior 110v outlet, and tow package. 21,995 out the door.... well out the door 4 or 5 months from now.
I've been really wanting a truck the past few years. But I haven't really looked since the sticker price is always stupid high and the gas mileage is always low. But after seeing this I think I need to reconsider come this spring. This is the first time I can honestly say a huge company genuinely got something right. Hopefully once released they keep everything the same. Looks like I have til spring to save up as much as I can
