But I had to stop when I heard you mention that we sent you a crimped core!!! Arrrrrgh! We went back to a clip on core AND added in security pins to the key pins about a year ago based on feedback from the LS community. But it's a rolling change... obviously... and we didn't grab some of the newer cylinders to send to you! Well, it proves 100% that PACLOCK Pres is not cherry picking what's being sent to you LS guys!

I'm a trucker and I recently had a lock cut off my trailer door, my team driver forgot it on the trailer. Love to try out a paclock to see if it can hold up before my boss keeps buying cheap locks

When two pin stacks get scrambled, and you have a working key, usually it is easy to determine how they were stacked. The key-rider (bottom) pins line up with the shear line while the key is in the core, then "mike" (use a micrometer to measure) the pin segments from the scrambled columns; take the difference of the bottom pin lengths from the scrambled columns and note that it should be nearly the same as the difference (in opposite column order) of the spring-rider (top) pins. So the shorter bottom pin rides under the longer top pin and vice versa.
Been struggling with mine for almost a year! Kinda glad to see the open give Bill this much of a challenge, I don't feel like such a noob. Closest I got was a decent false set, then my tensioner popped out and lost it all. That damn spring!
lol I was virtually shouting "USE A SHIM" when you were gutting this - there is that little groove on the core near the end that was likely catching on pin 6... still a good video - nice to see pros like you make mistakes like the rest of us :)

Bill, huge fan, picked my first Abus 64ti/60 yesterday! You have tried several mics and the same issue exists. The input level for the picking segments is too sensitive for the speaking segments and thats why I feel the distortion occurs. You have a bunch of mics and more than one channel / input, isolate the picking from the speaking. Just a thought. Be well.

You'd be surprised how many guys complain about my bumbling...😝 Yes, I DO screw things up once in awhile, especially when facing unusual designs (or poor) design features or locks I've never seen before. Yes, I COULD "practice" several times to get it perfect but I don't think that would be a realistic representation of what the average picker experiences. I try not to make it look "easy" and want folks to know what difficulties (and penalties) they face when gutting locks. And no, I don't deliberately screw things up - stuff just happens... This philosophy holds for picking locks as well. I don't "practice" picking before starting the camera. What you see is my first attempt unless I say otherwise in the video. Too many YTers film countless failed attempts and only post the successful one, giving the false impression of their "skill". I want new pickers to have a realistic idea of what REALLY happens when they pick locks. And yes, I babble a lot to cover up my incompetence.... it is a gift.

Sitting in Europe Paclock are essentially made from pure Unobtanium, however I did get an email from their Owner/CEO saying that they would be happy to get some locks at a very reasonable cost. Sadly the real world prevented me from taking up the offer. I just wanted to say that Paclock to get the credit for being decent folks (no I'm not scrounging for a free or discount lock I just want to see good guys get credit for being good guys)
Rob Crawford I missed out on their discounted prototype padlock but they gave me half price on their Gen 2 Paclock with my logo on it for a few extra dollars. Great service I must say. I will be getting more in future, they really listen to the market like few other companies do. Great to see in today's day & age. 😉👍🏽

I have one of the US general locks from HF that behaves like this. Lots of core flop, super strong spring. Not particularly hard to pick but difficult to tension and very easy to overset. Still not consistent with my time getting it open, despite familiarity
That's the finished version 2 of the prototype block locks? The shackle looks as though it's been moved down again, there isn't as much space as there was in the non-anodised version 2 prototype you showed off in video 1198. Also the sharp edges are back, in the prototype all the edges were chamfered. I can see several non-chamfered edges on the lock you show.
Yep, it is like they take their block lock "prize" and set it on a shelf somewhere, never to be used or picked. I've not seen a single one picked or even shown in a video.
It must be a good lock bill used his 160$ pick ,I'm just starting to learn locpicking have been watching for a while but i would also like to get a pac lock to support them because they really do care about there product and the people who use them you don't see that much anymore
I'm not doing videos yet so I really can't criticise something I don't know how to do, but I am a photographer and I do have a suggestion, since you mentioned in passing a new camera. Your camera may or may not have a feature to lock the focus down more, so it doesn't hunt as much. My DSLR zoom lenses have an option to only focus after a certain point, but this isn't common on wide angle or normal zoom lenses. What you could do instead is lock the focus, but instead have the aperture closed down tighter, like f/8 or f/10 or so. Also zooming out will keep more of the shot on focus, too. You will need more lighting, in some cases a lot more, but more of the frame will be in focus at any one time. I'm sure you're well aware of this, but what helps me in my photography is knowing that everything is a tradeoff, if I want that nice bokeh, I'm gonna have to trade something for it, like shutter speed or iso, or the possibility of not having the entire face in focus, so id have to take a few steps back, etc. This is in no way critical of your work, you do great work, and I'd love to get into doing UA-cam videos myself. UA-cam has honestly taken over tv as my primary source of entertainment and even education to some extent, like these videos! I'd love to be able to give back to the community soon, but I need to learn how to pick a lock first (which is something I'm brand new to, I've never picked a lock before, but I can't wait to try!) Me too! And we are grateful to the LS community for its support and help. We are actually behind in getting out new products we've developed over the past few months, so stay tuned (or plugged in?). We sent out 3 prototypes for a (what we think) pretty killer shipping container lock this week. Got word back of some minor changes needed from the customer... got 3 more prototypes out to the customer the next day with those changes incorporated. Hoping for some good news from the tester on Monday. Once we do, we'll get those into production and into the LS community's hands to check out...
Hey Bill, I can't tell from the video (and it's unlikely you're going to want to do destructive testing on the giveaway prizes) but it seems that lock might have a vulnerability... the pin in the bottom that the screw engages (to release the core) doesn't seem to have anything preventing it from rotating... is it possible to gain entry by using a punch to cause it to rotate? Thanks for the awesome videos!
Well, it's probably been about a 8-year journey that hasn't ended yet. Needless to say bringing in our own CNC machines has done a lot for us. I feel like the body is #1 important for quality with the cylinder being a close second. And our bodies are all within 0.003" (three thou) of tolerance for our machining. I apologize for being a bit bold here, but Master/American can't touch us and we rival anything coming out of Europe when it comes to precision... and we're much more affordable. We certainly weren't like that 11 years ago when I joined the family business and everything came out of China (like just about every other padlock manufacturer today). Oh the problems and the stories I can tell. Just means we've learned a lot and continue learning a lot. I appreciate the kind words, especially after so many long, long days of effort!

Hah! They already bought American Lock... plus I really think the entire ML company really, really doesn't like me! I've ruined quite a bit of things for them over the years! No one knows what the future holds, but what I do know is I like our company... I like the direction we're headed... I like our customers... and being excited about the future more than makes up for the 80 hours I work a week. What I really like is that as we grow as a company, less and less is dependent on me ~ and we're good about bringing in good people so, I hope, our company grows quite large but maintains that family business feeling... well, kind of like what American Lock used to be. I've always said that we need to become the new American Lock.

2:00 - Can someone please clarify for me (I'm thick sometimes) what is meant by purposely putting flop on the core "because they discovered that makes it a lot more difficult to determine if you're getting feedback from that core." Does that just mean putting that flop in REDUCES the feedback you get, or makes it difficult to tell if the feedback you're getting is genuine, or something else? 3:44 says it's hard to tell if you're getting CR because of it. Maybe that's all he means?
Ha! I have a LOT of bad days like that. Most of the locks I play with are either locks I've never seen (or disassembled) before, or challenge locks with some kind of weird alien technology inside waiting to explode in my face. 😀
It's not easy in the slightest and the locks are true trophies of greatness in lock building. There are only a handful of them in the world and you have to make something that he fails to pick to earn one. Here are some ideas: 1. Use machine tools to make your own replica Emhart lock. Google to see how it works (You need access to a machine shop but pretty good chance of whipping Bill). 2. Make some sort of hidden mechanism that has to be actuated BEFORE the core starts to turn to engage the actuator. (Sort of hard) 3. Use good bitting, floating elements, and lots of threading and serrations. Start with a 7- or 8-pin lock with good tolerances like a Best (Easier, but expensive). I have earned a PacLock myself, but it took 2 tries. The first one, the "cry BB", was picked rather easily because one of the pins malfunctioned and the lock was a $3 chinese lock with crap tolerances. The second one, the "H@ndcuff3d", totally stumped Bill. Watch the video for inspiration, but please don't copy my design. Good luck whipping Bill. It's possible.
Funny! We actually made the deliberate decision about 7 years ago to go to the socket cap screw. Why? Because we were having issues maybe 9 years ago with locks coming apart on the backs of trucks from all of the rattling and jiggling. Then we started with applying loc-tite and a small lock washer! Worked great, locks wouldn't fall apart anymore on the back of trucks. BUT, it made it really, really hard for locksmiths to service the lock and they'd strip the dumb Phillips head screw. So we went with a socket cap screw AND a Nylok patch and I can honestly say it's been a long, long time since we've gotten any calls about (1) locks falling apart or (2) someone stripping the screw as they were trying to service it. You can't tell from the videos, but at that same time about 8 years ago we went to all stainless steel parts (except for the steel cover plate and security nut). But the ball bearings, screws, shackle spring, actuator parts, etc. are all stainless steel. Don't know of any other manufacturer that does that across their line! So kind of hoping that I've convinced you that the socket cap is the way to go!!!

Dark Arts Lock Picking great idea buddy.... hang on a minute! 😅 The problem is that I only made one challenge lock so far and it wasn't too great mate.😕
Ok, here's the entire story... The intermittent “rattle”, “scratching” or “cat bell sound” a few viewers have been hearing has been a nightmare to track down, and it came from an unexpected source. It was especially difficult because I fall into the group that cannot hear the rattle so I worked with some sound engineers with perfect hearing. Before soundproofing the LockLab, getting a studio grade microphone, and capturing audio at a very high resolution, nobody noticed because the rattle was disguised by low resolution audio that had a lot of background noise and camera hum. Once I soundproofed the LockLab and upgraded the audio gear, several of you noticed a faint, and intermittent sound that occurred ONLY while I spoke. I should note that I don’t wear jewelry, dog tags, or anything else that would cause a sound. My pop/hiss filter is 3” away from the microphone and firmly zip tied down. The microphone is in a shock mount and all connections are tight. VERY tight. While recording my mouth is 6”-12” away from the pop/hiss filter and nothing touches the microphone during recording. My recording levels are very low, in the -18 to -12 dB range with no spikes above -6dB. If there IS a spike, I adjust it down to below -6dB before publishing. I’ve done tests down to -34dB average, but the rattle was present at every level. My first thought was a faulty microphone, so I bought another, then another, then another. Each clearly captured the distortion. Oddly, the sound does NOT show up on the audio waveform. There are no spikes or any indication that something is there, yet you can hear it. A sound engineer suggested my voice had a resonant frequency with the microphone’s capsule, but after five different microphones capturing the sound, I ruled that out and returned the mics. My current microphone is no slouch: a Neuman TLM-103. We ruled out the microphone. The second suspect was the intermittent running cooling fan in the laptop, which I was using to capture the audio. I replaced it with a Zoom H2N digital recorder, but the barely audible rattle was still there. I bought a Zoom H5, then finally a professional grade Zoom F4. The sound was STILL there in all of them. We ruled out the digital recorders. The third suspect was the audio processing software that I believed might be introducing distortion during noise reduction of the high-resolution files. I invested in Adobe Audition but it made no difference and the noise remained. I bought Izotope’s RX6, but audio processed by it also had the rattle. Several people suggested it could be UA-cam’s compression software but since rattle is present in most of the raw, unprocessed audio we ruled that out. The sound engineers believe YT’s conversion and compression make the sound more distinct, but it is not the cause of the rattle. We ruled out the post processing software. The fourth thought was some kind of electromagnetic influence causing the distortion when my voice peaked. I replaced the generic microphone cord with a Mogami Gold Studio Grade XLR cable. It made no difference; the sound was still with us. I made test files with the power in the LockLab shut down, operating on battery power only. The rattle was still present in the audio files. We ruled out cables and EMR. For my fifth attack, several people suggested it was something in the LockLab that was vibrating when I spoke. To test this, I made several test files in my house (bathroom, dining room, kitchen, and in the back yard). I did these tests using multiple microphones and the three different digital recorders. All the files had the rattling sound. We ruled out anything unique to the LockLab. By this time, I had no idea which direction to go. It was a gremlin… Shortly after the final test my wife and I had several friends over for drinks and dinner. In the course of conversation my wife started to ridicule my “irrational quest for perfect audio” and several friends were interested. I fired up the laptop and let them take turns listening to the audio. About half heard the sound and, with no prompting from me, called it a “faint rattle”. As I told them of the various tests, one of them said “Hey! Bill, say that again!”. I repeated my sentence and they all said “There it is!” I repeated the sentence several more times and they occasionally heard the sound - not EVERY time, but intermittently. Once the people with REALLY good hearing knew what they were listening for, they said it was easy to hear when I spoke. So, since my voice was the only common element throughout the testing, it finally made sense. I apparently have an intermittent vocal anomaly that was enhanced by the high-fidelity gear. Normally, it is found in singers that stress their voices and is called, appropriately enough, “singer’s rattle”. A very few people can hear it perfectly, while most cannot. There were three possible solutions: The first, suggested by Adam F, is to apply a notch filter around 4100hz, where the rattle appears. We’ve experimented with this but unfortunately 4100hz is right in the middle of the human speech range. The “rattle” is not a discrete frequency, but actually ranges from 4000hz to about 4200hz, or a range of 200hz. Notching out that frequency range REALLY mangles the audio and is obvious to the most casual listener. Clearly, won’t work. The second solution is to revert to using the camera’s microphone to capture sound. It is a much lower resolution and, as long-term listeners probably recall, produced pretty dirty sound. There’s no guarantee this would satisfy everyone because the camera DOES still capture the rattle, but to a lesser degree. I’m not a fan of going back to low quality sound. The third solution addresses the REAL problem: my voice. Treating “singer’s rattle” includes warming up your voice before recording (I can do this), not over-exerting your voice (I don’t do this), gargling with salt water (I can do this), and hot drinks like tea with lemon & honey (efficacy of this is arguable but I can do this too). Some suggest that placing the microphone at a 45-degree angle to the side helps attenuate the rattle, so I’ve moved my mic. Oddly, this rattle didn’t show up in my voice until about six months ago, so it may solve itself, given time. In short, there’s no guarantee that any of these things will permanently fix the noise. I’ll do everything possible, but I have to work with the vocal cords that I was issued… Bosnianbill

Bill, huge fan, picked my first Abus 64ti/60 yesterday! You have tried several mics and the same issue exists. The input level for the picking segments is too sensitive for the speaking segments and thats why I feel the distortion occurs. You have a bunch of mics and more than one channel / input, isolate the picking from the speaking. Just a thought. Be well.

You'd be surprised how many guys complain about my bumbling...😝 Yes, I DO screw things up once in awhile, especially when facing unusual designs (or poor) design features or locks I've never seen before. Yes, I COULD "practice" several times to get it perfect but I don't think that would be a realistic representation of what the average picker experiences. I try not to make it look "easy" and want folks to know what difficulties (and penalties) they face when gutting locks. And no, I don't deliberately screw things up - stuff just happens... This philosophy holds for picking locks as well. I don't "practice" picking before starting the camera. What you see is my first attempt unless I say otherwise in the video. Too many YTers film countless failed attempts and only post the successful one, giving the false impression of their "skill". I want new pickers to have a realistic idea of what REALLY happens when they pick locks. And yes, I babble a lot to cover up my incompetence.... it is a gift.

Sitting in Europe Paclock are essentially made from pure Unobtanium, however I did get an email from their Owner/CEO saying that they would be happy to get some locks at a very reasonable cost.
Sadly the real world prevented me from taking up the offer.

I have one of the US general locks from HF that behaves like this. Lots of core flop, super strong spring. Not particularly hard to pick but difficult to tension and very easy to overset. Still not consistent with my time getting it open, despite familiarity
That's the finished version 2 of the prototype block locks? The shackle looks as though it's been moved down again, there isn't as much space as there was in the non-anodised version 2 prototype you showed off in video 1198. Also the sharp edges are back, in the prototype all the edges were chamfered. I can see several non-chamfered edges on the lock you show.

Yep, it is like they take their block lock "prize" and set it on a shelf somewhere, never to be used or picked. I've not seen a single one picked or even shown in a video.

I'm not doing videos yet so I really can't criticise something I don't know how to do, but I am a photographer and I do have a suggestion, since you mentioned in passing a new camera. Your camera may or may not have a feature to lock the focus down more, so it doesn't hunt as much. My DSLR zoom lenses have an option to only focus after a certain point, but this isn't common on wide angle or normal zoom lenses. What you could do instead is lock the focus, but instead have the aperture closed down tighter, like f/8 or f/10 or so. Also zooming out will keep more of the shot on focus, too. You will need more lighting, in some cases a lot more, but more of the frame will be in focus at any one time. I'm sure you're well aware of this, but what helps me in my photography is knowing that everything is a tradeoff, if I want that nice bokeh, I'm gonna have to trade something for it, like shutter speed or iso, or the possibility of not having the entire face in focus, so id have to take a few steps back, etc.
This is in no way critical of your work, you do great work, and I'd love to get into doing UA-cam videos myself. UA-cam has honestly taken over tv as my primary source of entertainment and even education to some extent, like these videos! I'd love to be able to give back to the community soon, but I need to learn how to pick a lock first (which is something I'm brand new to, I've never picked a lock before, but I can't wait to try!)

Me too! And we are grateful to the LS community for its support and help. We are actually behind in getting out new products we've developed over the past few months, so stay tuned (or plugged in?). We sent out 3 prototypes for a (what we think) pretty killer shipping container lock this week. Got word back of some minor changes needed from the customer... got 3 more prototypes out to the customer the next day with those changes incorporated. Hoping for some good news from the tester on Monday. Once we do, we'll get those into production and into the LS community's hands to check out...

Hey Bill, I can't tell from the video (and it's unlikely you're going to want to do destructive testing on the giveaway prizes) but it seems that lock might have a vulnerability... the pin in the bottom that the screw engages (to release the core) doesn't seem to have anything preventing it from rotating... is it possible to gain entry by using a punch to cause it to rotate?

I like how Paclock has gone from junk to very high quality in a relatively short amount of time.
Well, it's probably been about a 8-year journey that hasn't ended yet. Needless to say bringing in our own CNC machines has done a lot for us. I feel like the body is #1 important for quality with the cylinder being a close second. And our bodies are all within 0.003" (three thou) of tolerance for our machining. I apologize for being a bit bold here, but Master/American can't touch us and we rival anything coming out of Europe when it comes to precision... and we're much more affordable.
We certainly weren't like that 11 years ago when I joined the family business and everything came out of China (like just about every other padlock manufacturer today). Oh the problems and the stories I can tell. Just means we've learned a lot and continue learning a lot. I appreciate the kind words, especially after so many long, long days of effort!

Hah! They already bought American Lock... plus I really think the entire ML company really, really doesn't like me! I've ruined quite a bit of things for them over the years!
No one knows what the future holds, but what I do know is I like our company... I like the direction we're headed... I like our customers... and being excited about the future more than makes up for the 80 hours I work a week.
What I really like is that as we grow as a company, less and less is dependent on me ~ and we're good about bringing in good people so, I hope, our company grows quite large but maintains that family business feeling... well, kind of like what American Lock used to be. I've always said that we need to become the new American Lock.

2:00 - Can someone please clarify for me (I'm thick sometimes) what is meant by purposely putting flop on the core "because they discovered that makes it a lot more difficult to determine if you're getting feedback from that core." Does that just mean putting that flop in REDUCES the feedback you get, or makes it difficult to tell if the feedback you're getting is genuine, or something else? 3:44 says it's hard to tell if you're getting CR because of it. Maybe that's all he means?

It's not easy in the slightest and the locks are true trophies of greatness in lock building. There are only a handful of them in the world and you have to make something that he fails to pick to earn one.
Here are some ideas:
1. Use machine tools to make your own replica Emhart lock. Google to see how it works (You need access to a machine shop but pretty good chance of whipping Bill).
2. Make some sort of hidden mechanism that has to be actuated BEFORE the core starts to turn to engage the actuator. (Sort of hard)
3. Use good bitting, floating elements, and lots of threading and serrations. Start with a 7- or 8-pin lock with good tolerances like a Best (Easier, but expensive).
I have earned a PacLock myself, but it took 2 tries. The first one, the "cry BB", was picked rather easily because one of the pins malfunctioned and the lock was a $3 chinese lock with crap tolerances.
The second one, the "H@ndcuff3d", totally stumped Bill. Watch the video for inspiration, but please don't copy my design. Good luck whipping Bill. It's possible.

Funny! We actually made the deliberate decision about 7 years ago to go to the socket cap screw. Why? Because we were having issues maybe 9 years ago with locks coming apart on the backs of trucks from all of the rattling and jiggling. Then we started with applying loc-tite and a small lock washer! Worked great, locks wouldn't fall apart anymore on the back of trucks. BUT, it made it really, really hard for locksmiths to service the lock and they'd strip the dumb Phillips head screw. So we went with a socket cap screw AND a Nylok patch and I can honestly say it's been a long, long time since we've gotten any calls about (1) locks falling apart or (2) someone stripping the screw as they were trying to service it. You can't tell from the videos, but at that same time about 8 years ago we went to all stainless steel parts (except for the steel cover plate and security nut). But the ball bearings, screws, shackle spring, actuator parts, etc. are all stainless steel. Don't know of any other manufacturer that does that across their line!
So kind of hoping that I've convinced you that the socket cap is the way to go!!!

Ok, here's the entire story...
The intermittent “rattle”, “scratching” or “cat bell sound” a few viewers have been hearing has been a nightmare to track down, and it came from an unexpected source. It was especially difficult because I fall into the group that cannot hear the rattle so I worked with some sound engineers with perfect hearing.
Before soundproofing the LockLab, getting a studio grade microphone, and capturing audio at a very high resolution, nobody noticed because the rattle was disguised by low resolution audio that had a lot of background noise and camera hum.
Once I soundproofed the LockLab and upgraded the audio gear, several of you noticed a faint, and intermittent sound that occurred ONLY while I spoke.
I should note that I don’t wear jewelry, dog tags, or anything else that would cause a sound. My pop/hiss filter is 3” away from the microphone and firmly zip tied down. The microphone is in a shock mount and all connections are tight. VERY tight. While recording my mouth is 6”-12” away from the pop/hiss filter and nothing touches the microphone during recording. My recording levels are very low, in the -18 to -12 dB range with no spikes above -6dB. If there IS a spike, I adjust it down to below -6dB before publishing. I’ve done tests down to -34dB average, but the rattle was present at every level.
My first thought was a faulty microphone, so I bought another, then another, then another. Each clearly captured the distortion. Oddly, the sound does NOT show up on the audio waveform. There are no spikes or any indication that something is there, yet you can hear it. A sound engineer suggested my voice had a resonant frequency with the microphone’s capsule, but after five different microphones capturing the sound, I ruled that out and returned the mics. My current microphone is no slouch: a Neuman TLM-103. We ruled out the microphone.
The second suspect was the intermittent running cooling fan in the laptop, which I was using to capture the audio. I replaced it with a Zoom H2N digital recorder, but the barely audible rattle was still there. I bought a Zoom H5, then finally a professional grade Zoom F4. The sound was STILL there in all of them. We ruled out the digital recorders.
The third suspect was the audio processing software that I believed might be introducing distortion during noise reduction of the high-resolution files. I invested in Adobe Audition but it made no difference and the noise remained. I bought Izotope’s RX6, but audio processed by it also had the rattle. Several people suggested it could be UA-cam’s compression software but since rattle is present in most of the raw, unprocessed audio we ruled that out. The sound engineers believe YT’s conversion and compression make the sound more distinct, but it is not the cause of the rattle. We ruled out the post processing software.
The fourth thought was some kind of electromagnetic influence causing the distortion when my voice peaked. I replaced the generic microphone cord with a Mogami Gold Studio Grade XLR cable. It made no difference; the sound was still with us. I made test files with the power in the LockLab shut down, operating on battery power only. The rattle was still present in the audio files. We ruled out cables and EMR.
For my fifth attack, several people suggested it was something in the LockLab that was vibrating when I spoke. To test this, I made several test files in my house (bathroom, dining room, kitchen, and in the back yard). I did these tests using multiple microphones and the three different digital recorders. All the files had the rattling sound. We ruled out anything unique to the LockLab.
By this time, I had no idea which direction to go. It was a gremlin…
Shortly after the final test my wife and I had several friends over for drinks and dinner. In the course of conversation my wife started to ridicule my “irrational quest for perfect audio” and several friends were interested. I fired up the laptop and let them take turns listening to the audio. About half heard the sound and, with no prompting from me, called it a “faint rattle”. As I told them of the various tests, one of them said “Hey! Bill, say that again!”. I repeated my sentence and they all said “There it is!” I repeated the sentence several more times and they occasionally heard the sound - not EVERY time, but intermittently. Once the people with REALLY good hearing knew what they were listening for, they said it was easy to hear when I spoke.
So, since my voice was the only common element throughout the testing, it finally made sense. I apparently have an intermittent vocal anomaly that was enhanced by the high-fidelity gear. Normally, it is found in singers that stress their voices and is called, appropriately enough, “singer’s rattle”. A very few people can hear it perfectly, while most cannot.
There were three possible solutions:
The first, suggested by Adam F, is to apply a notch filter around 4100hz, where the rattle appears. We’ve experimented with this but unfortunately 4100hz is right in the middle of the human speech range. The “rattle” is not a discrete frequency, but actually ranges from 4000hz to about 4200hz, or a range of 200hz. Notching out that frequency range REALLY mangles the audio and is obvious to the most casual listener. Clearly, won’t work.
The second solution is to revert to using the camera’s microphone to capture sound. It is a much lower resolution and, as long-term listeners probably recall, produced pretty dirty sound. There’s no guarantee this would satisfy everyone because the camera DOES still capture the rattle, but to a lesser degree. I’m not a fan of going back to low quality sound.
The third solution addresses the REAL problem: my voice. Treating “singer’s rattle” includes warming up your voice before recording (I can do this), not over-exerting your voice (I don’t do this), gargling with salt water (I can do this), and hot drinks like tea with lemon & honey (efficacy of this is arguable but I can do this too). Some suggest that placing the microphone at a 45-degree angle to the side helps attenuate the rattle, so I’ve moved my mic. Oddly, this rattle didn’t show up in my voice until about six months ago, so it may solve itself, given time.
In short, there’s no guarantee that any of these things will permanently fix the noise. I’ll do everything possible, but I have to work with the vocal cords that I was issued…
