I'm Stacking Fractional Gold in 2024. Are You?

  • Are you Stacking smaller gold coins this year like the 1/10th oz, 1/4th oz and 1/2 oz Coins or Bars? I have found that fractional sized gold coins and bars are a terrific way to hold smaller amounts of wealth in gold. The size makes them incredibly easy to store and transport and the value also easy to sell to local shops and other stackers. With fractional gold you also don't have to sell an entire ounce of gold for cash if you don't need to do so. You have options, like this 1/4 oz Gold Maple Leaf. Some cons of course are higher premiums over spot - but if you are holding and believe as I do that gold spot price will continue to rise over the years than premiums paid aren't much to worry about. Besides, you'll get a premium over spot back when you go to sell as these coins are always in demand.

    Spot on. One ounce of gold costs less than ten 1/10th ounces of gold but I’d rather have ten 1/10th ounces than zero ounces. I’ve stacked thirty-six 1/10 ounce coins so far, mostly American Gold Eagles but I have 8 from the Perth Mint and a couple of Britannias and couple of Maples. When I’m looking at my stack, never once have I said, “If I had saved my money I could have one one-ounce coin instead of these eight 1/10th oz coins.”

      @@tomtharos4440 My dad used to say “pound salt.” Lol. In any case, you’re exactly right. I think that some folks overextend themselves to buy the one-ounce gold coins, paying more to save a bit on the premium and thereby stretching their finances (perhaps even-ew-using a credit card). Don’t do that. Buy what you can afford comfortably, and if it’s 1/10 oz periodically, who cares?

    I do have a few 1 ounce pieces, but I rarely had the cash for 1 ounce gold purchases. As a result, silver has always been my default focus. For several years I only had eyes and budget for silver. Its not that I did not want the gold stuff, I just could not see starting out that far behind the plus curve on a single 1/10 coin. As well, a 10 ounce bar just felt substantial. Then 3/2020 happened.
    Premiums on PM's went pretty nuts. So I look back and maybe I was thinking with blinders. The average price of silver when I got into Pm's in 2015 was about 17.00... today...23.00 gold was 1150 and 2050 respectively. Yes silver got to 29 or so dollars and I sold every ASE I had for 40+ each. Silver has its place. (a great way to fund those ounce gold purchases) A 1/10oz AGE was 130.00 a piece then and 240 ish now. In the grand scheme both are a insurance you pay yourself. What has shifted my focus ?? With the exception of a few silvers spikes every now and then, the GSR has a concerning long term slope. Yes, I know silver is an industrial metal. I have enough and I am a silver subscriber and supportive of silvers cause. I think if you could go back in time with enough cash to buy an ounce of gold or its equal in silver, most would take the ounce of gold.

If you have to barter and trade then the half or quarter gold coin will be the smarter option. Yes the premium is higher but never quibble when it comes to gold.

    Our goals are in line for 2024, Stacker. I met a goal last year by adding 2 additional 1/4 oz coins to the 2 I already had. My goal for this year is more fractional gold in the form of 1/10 oz coins. While you get more gold for the buck with the 1/4 oz coins, 1/10 of an oz is my sweet spot...I like the fact that I can usually afford to pick one up every pay check, yet it still meets the minimum requirement for free shipping.

    Hey Stacker good to see you are back. I actually bought one of those Pamp Azure Dragon 1 oz gold bars at Costco. My original plan was to own 10-12oz of gold in my life time. I am already at 6 to 7 oz. Only started stacking in July 2023 and did not even buy gold until a coin show in Seattle in August when gold was at around $1,900 per troy oz. Bought a lot of 1 grams at around $67 each now in the money on them. Also When Costco finally had gold bars in store gold was trading at $2,010 and Costco was selling the Pamp Gold dragon bars for $2,000 each I tried to by all I could and only managed to get 4-1oz bars ($8,000 in total and only time I have ever bought gold under spot). Those bars at Costco went fast. I bought my latest bar at Costco during New Years weekend. I went to my Costco and that same bar I paid $2,000 for was now $2,100 and gold traded at $2,072 at that time. Still great price for a Pamp gold bar Azure Dragon (Now I own 5 1 oz bars of those). The rest of the gold I have is 1g, 5g, and 10 gram bars. I also own 1/4 oz Kergraund and it is the only coin I own. I did notice Costco also now sells a one ounce Maple Leaf on their site for about the same price as the Pamp Azure Dragon 1 oz bar.
    So my question to everyone is given the choices which would you choose if both were same price 1 oz Pamp gold bar or a 1 oz gold Maple Leaf?
    I have also noticed at the LCS in the Seattle area, Swiss gold like Pamp are harder to come by versus other gold items. I wanted to ask the you and the chat what kind of gold sells well in your area. Thanks

    Yea, my comment never went out until now! I stay away from fractional because of the mentioned reasons, however my LCS recently came into a lot of 1/10 AGE and was selling at a fraction above spot, there I can rationalize a small premium! In the end it is better to stack than not at all so even procuring the 1/10 and 1/2 oz AGE is worth it in the end.

All 6 coins graded 70 and a couple of W proof ASE for a total of 9 so far all 2023 dated. I also started buying W proof and business first strike Trump label red white and blue and flag core 70 graded pcgs from Pinehurst coins. I want a 10 coin set for 2023 and 10 for 2024. Here's the thing I realized that caused me to switch to stacking fractional gold bullion almost exclusively over silver: The premiums for fractional gold, though higher than they are for full ounce gold, are still typically lower than the premiums you will have to pay for silver bullion one ounce coins.

    Is good to have fractional. The way I see it is if you carry cash, having a 100th dollar bill and if you need to buy something that's $10 or $5, and can't get change. Or the person dont want to accept the $100.
    Same thing with gold, if what you're getting is cover by the 1/10oz then why use a 1oz.

    When, in your opinion, would you start to consider trading in some of your bulk generic Silver bars and rounds for Gold? I know the ratio is about 85:1 at the moment, but I'm just curious on you're thoughts

    • @edb3877
      @edb3877 7 місяців тому +2

      Hey, Jimmy. I would start trading 2/3 of my silver stack when the GSR hits 40:1. I would trade the silver in 10% increments and follow the GSR down in units of 2, so at 38, 36, 34, etc.
      to 1. If I traded all of my bars, Maples, and ASEs I would trade them in this order. The US 90% silver coins would be saved for last as potential barter money. My favorite coins are
      high quality 1880s-1890s Morgans, 1964 Kennedy halves, and the early to mid 2000s proof statehood quarters.
      We had the GSR drop to about 32:1 back in 2011 but my silver stack was small then since I'd only been stacking for a bit over a year at that time and wasn't into gold. In late 2013,
      the price of gold was down significantly from its 2011 highs, so I started stacking gold as well. In 2019, I met my silver stacking goal, so stopped buying silver unless something
      really nice came along at a decent price. Back in 2021, it did via a good friend of mine selling me AU class Morgans from a large amount of Morgans he'd just purchased from his
      dealer. He brought 200 of them to a meeting we'd scheduled, and I picked out 85 of them to add to my stack. The good news there was that he was selling these at the same price
      as the online dealers were charging for Morgan culls, so it was definitely a win-win in terms of coin price and quality. Since he bought these in bulk, probably in $1,000 face bags,
      I'm sure he made a profit on this deal. I did well too, so both parties were satisfied.
      As to the type of gold I want to own, that would be Maples, AGEs, and recently some Britannias. About 3/4 of my gold stack is in 1-oz. coins and 1/4 is in 1/2 oz. and 1/4 oz. coins.
      These percentages are in gold weight and not in number of coins. I don't own any 1/10 oz. gold coins, due to the excessive premiums charged per oz. on them. I want to be able to
      cash in just the amount I need to sell to cover living expenses in retirement and no more than that. This will be valuable during a time of rapid inflation, since the gold not cashed in
      will be allowed to remain in gold and not in extra cash that is quickly depreciating. If I don't need to sell the gold, then it will go to my heirs as a bonus.

    My goal is to get either a fractional gold Britannia, Tudor Beast and Kangaroo every check. I like the fractional maples but the premiums are much higher than Royal Mint or Perth Mint coins. 1/4 Eagle premiums are way too high and I strongly prefer 9999. • @DanCooper404
      @DanCooper404 7 місяців тому +1

      It's a large country that's an ocean away from most foreign gold. Maples and Libertads are the only "local" foreign gold, and for people living in the middle of the country, Canada and Mexico can still be over 1,000 miles away. In such a situation, it's easy to feel isolated and protectionist against foreign countries and their coinage.

    • @rustyshackleford2719
      @rustyshackleford2719 7 місяців тому

      @@DanCooper404 I guess but it seems incredibly illogical to pay a much higher premium for 1/4 eagles. It's a bad idea to stack exclusively in one coin and especially one that's not 9999. That might not seem important but if you have to leave the US with your bullion then you are in bad shape because many countries will tax you for not bringing in 9999 gold. Every online retailer provides plenty of consumer choice, so even if you're stuck in Wichita there's no reason to be wedded to US Mint products.

      @@rustyshackleford2719 I think about liquidity here in the States. It is always easiest to sell the coin of the realm. Some people love them. I don't personally, so I also add fractional foreign 24k coins that I love so I can enjoy stacking...probably 75% US and 25% foreign.
