  • In this video, Ed Frawley shares a question from the Ask Cindy database. Today's question is about a person who is about to get a puppy but the breeder has told the new owner that the puppy has an umbilical hernia. The owner is wondering if they should still get the puppy or not.

Man, I was scouring Leerburg’s FAQs for this exact topic a while back. My breeder informed me before pickup that my puppy had an umbilical hernia, which her vet had evaluated and said did not need surgery. She had an older dog (a half sister to my puppy) with the same thing, and it closed on it’s own around 6 months of age.
My vet tried to scare me into getting it surgically closed immediately. She said that they sometimes close on their own “If you get lucky.”
This creeped in my head, because it still looked quite large and bulbous at around 4 months. But sure enough, my puppy is 6 and a half months old now, and it’s totally gone.
    Male Beauceron puppy.
And in case you were curious, I knew not to take the vet’s advice because she also asked me if I was going to neuter him immediately, and is staunchly opposed to a raw diet for dogs 😂

I am a breeder and get the occasional puppy with this issue. I thought it was from the mom self-delivering and cutting the umbilical cord by pulling and chewing. I was wondering if helping mom out and cutting the cord myself would eliminate hernia risk.

The puppy i am about to get has a bilateral inguinal hernia. Just discovered when he was getting his health check…Vet said small, bilateral. The breeder informed me today. He would have to travel by car 5 hours to get here…to a home where we have a couple other dogs. What should I do ?

I just bought a 8 week old German shepherd today and the puppy had hernia surgery this morning and the breader didn't tell me until literally when we meet to sign papers. what should I do? the puppy is not active is this because of the surgery?
