You have to muzzle certain dogs if they've already learned to use their teeth to get what they want. This is a no-no in our world and muzzles are designed to take their teeth away which makes everyone much less nervous and gives you the chance to correct your dog without worrying about being bitten. If you have multiple dogs, make sure you are the leader and don't let anyone of them show aggression towards each other, ever. The real issue here is that as a dog trainer, when I bring up the word "muzzle", most people hate it. They hate the idea of a muzzle more than the idea of a dog attack. Society is doomed and I can't fix it.

Having had a vet clinic for many years, when dogs have committed an attack on this level, they are VERY likely to continue the pattern. They had been practicing aggression previously and then they became highly skilled. Dogs don’t go back to lower levels of aggression. Yes, they could possibly be managed by extremely skilled handlers with impeccable attention to the management. BUT. No regular household could ensure long term that other dogs (and people) are safe from future aggressive events with those dogs. Excellent excellent video and handling of a tough topic. I’m always grateful that your voice of knowledge, experience and reason is continuing to educate. Please don’t stop!!

So happy to see a person, in the world of dog's, agree that aggression is only managed and not eradicated. And it's only managed by someone the dog respects. And that person has to be 100% on their game with eyes in the back of their head.

@@WDLC1911 I have always wondered about this. I have come across generic pitbull types in public places that stared my dog very intently (tail whips back and forth--a heightened state of arousal) but when they look at me, their entire posture changes to one of absolute friendliness.....there was no mistaking this complete change in demeanor. Another interesting factoid, the owners in both cases, were completely oblivious to their dogs' attitudes--absolutely clueless. By this point though, we are walking away as quickly as possible.

    • @WDLC1911
      @WDLC1911 Рік тому +6

@@melblacke5726, yes. It’s “odd” in that we as humans think “aggression is aggression”. But think of it as “interest” and then we see bird dogs interested in birds. Cattle dogs typically interested in cattle and fighting dogs their own kind.
This is what I think about raising a Pit Bull. It must be lovingly cared for in a close to a zero stress environment. There must be an outlet for its natural aggression: tug of war, spring pole, flirt pole, etc. There must be play and exercise to match its drive. Never encourage the pup to go after a human (don’t allow people to tease the dog). If those things cannot be effectively addressed there’s likely to be some trouble - especially the first and last item. The lack of an avenue to expend its natural aggression will also cause issues if the dog isn’t naturally calm.
Mine, even as an adult, would come up to me, put one paw on my leg and lean into me for affection. The first three nights. S every Friday I would spend a few hours cuddling him and sleeping with the pup on a beanbag chair.
When I got him outside I’d sprint away from him laughing. He’d run and try to catch up. Id get on the ground at his level and play with him - roll him over and scratch his belly, nibble on his ears.
The goal was to show him that I was always in his life in a positive manner: a source of food, fun and consistent firm but loving discipline.
He’d not hurt a human unless you went after someone in the house and only if the dog interpreted your intent as a serious intent to do harm.
But he was ALWAYS dog aggressive. We had a poodle that he was fine with. As a puppy he always grabbed the poodle’s collar so we removed the collar. It was the Bulldog’s instinct to fight and wrestle and the poodle could not take that so I wrestled and played tug of war, etc with him and the rough play with the poodle stopped. I never did anything to make the Bulldog jealous. I would pick up the poodle and would step across the Bulldog and run his sides so he thought early that this was how to receive affection.
When I’d take them to the vet the Bulldog was eventually unmanageable. We’d call ahead and the vet would bring us thru the side door straight into a room. As soon as Dr. Peter’s and his assistant would come into the room he’d whine and carry on with them for about five minutes.
When he’d hear a dog bark he’d stiffen up like a statue. Staring intently in the direction he heard the bark. No dog could even approach the poodle.
So, it CAN be done but it’s as much as the dog as it is the trainer. When people say “Pit Bulls are just like any other dog” they are either (a) ignorant, (b) not been around a working strain variant or (c) disingenuous. There’s nothing wrong with the first two…
Also, every owner of an intense dog should have a break stick to pry them off. If you see a Pit Bull or any catchdog breed (to include a Malinois or Dutch Shepherd) with its owner and they have no means to pry the dog off go elsewhere. Mistakes happen and you don’t need to be part of that mistake.
      God bless.

@@WDLC1911 this is simply not true. Dogs who are showing aggression to other dogs are practicing over threshold behavior. They are practicing expressing their frustration with aggressive acts. They are at very high risk of expressing frustration at humans with aggressive acts. They are at very high risk of displacing their dog aggression onto a human. This goes the other direction too.

I agree, people who say that line are one of the people I hate the most. How they can actually believe a dog will behave itself in all scenarios is beyond me. I have childhood trauma from neighbors who kept dog packs. Dogs change when they have a pack, like Dr. Jackal and Mr. Hyde. I have seen a perfectly good behaving dog turn into something wicked when it gets caught up in the moment with a pack. For example, my sister's next door neighbor's dogs (had around six dogs) were pretty okay when they were ALONE, but when they roamed as a pack they killed my sister's cat and tried to kill my dog while we were walking on the road. We always had to drive quietly when approaching the house, look around carefully to see where the dogs were and make it to the house before they got close, just in case they were in an aggressive mood. They also ALWAYS chased the car when we left. Let me tell you, trying to drive with six dogs chasing your car is awful. When the neighbors down the road had a child, despite the pack owner being a cop, we called the cops and had the dogs removed as it was against the law to even have that many dogs without a kennel license, let alone allow them to roam loose. We only waited that long because of the fact that the owner was a cop and all the shelters around at the time were kill shelters. Once a young child was involved any sympathy or fear of reprisal had to be thrown out the window. I am 40 years old now and am still traumatized from the things that pack did. Thanks to various incidents with aggressive dogs and their irresponsible owners when I was still young, I developed a fear of dogs that is still with me today. Even though I like dogs in general, I am always scared when seeing one approaching me until I know for sure that it is friendly. Even then I never fully trust them, and that is so so sad. I am missing out on all the good things that come with a close bond with a dog. Over all, people should never have more than two dogs unless they are a professional handler and follow kenneling practices, no matter how experienced they believe themselves to be.

I’m not anti pit of staffies, but I am super upset with owners not understanding that there is a tendency for staffies/pits to gang up and attack dogs unprovoked. And they don’t do anything to correct the dogs or set boundaries, which is a huge error.
If this lady’s pitbulls were already resource guarding, they had a switch that was inevitably going to go off and shouldn’t be left alone with the other dogs. I also felt the need to address a Malinois owner who recorded a tug session with a pitbull, trying to show off the mal’s tenacity, but you could see the mal was playing fair/calmly, and the pit was going to do whatever it had to do to get the object away from the mal. They are gentle, loving, non aggressive dogs but I watch them constantly for any aggression, even though they get along great. We have a plan if they become too rough with each other. We don't take them lightly at all. They are big enough to injure someone even in play so we are careful not to play rough with them.

The female minds really well but the male challenges me but I had German shepherds so am use to working with large dogs. I always put him in his kennel when I leave and my property is fenced and cross fenced to keep everyone safe. People need to be responsible with their pets...they are animals. On the other hand people also expect better behavior from an animal then people. I tried rehoming the dogs through a no kill shelter but they said they only place maybe 4% of pits and the rest? They get euthanized at a no kill shelter? So I took them home and 6 years so far all good.

I have 4 male dogs. One is a border collie, catahoula, Pitbull, Pitbull mix. All of the dogs are rescues. I would never leave any two of them together any length of time. I've had the border Collie for 6 years catahoula for five years. Their older dogs been together all these years, but I still wouldn't leave any of them together in a yard without supervision. I've worked in and managed shelters for over 30 years. I've worked in boarding facilities. I've watch dogs go after each other when they couldn't get to what they wanted. Had a boxer go after me when it couldn't get to what it wanted, a male Doberman. I got 18 holes in me before they could get him off. One of the biggest things that human beings need to understand, is how animals see the world. How a dog is supposed to live in a pack. We force them to live in our world our way.

People just need to have some common sense when it comes to all dogs. I have a Dachshund. He's the absolute sweetest little dog and we're together 24-7 when I'm not at work. However, he has aggression. I saw it in him from the earliest age. When my brothers and nephews come around they want to do that thing men do and make him mad and play rough with him but I don't allow it for one second. I also had a cat that just recently passed away at 16. My dog absolutely knew aggression wasn't tolerated toward the cat and yet I knew he was jealous and I just couldn't fully trust him around her when I wasn't there. I never left them alone in a room together when I wasn't there. He never so much as growled at her but I know his instincts. There's no way in h*ll I was going to risk coming home to that scene. I also did some research when I noticed the aggression. They were originally bred to hunt badgers. So naw, not going to leave a small animal alone with him and take that chance. I'm also not going to lay a baby up on the bed with him or have a small child pulling on him or up in his face. He's vicious with his toys, vicious, and I 'think' he understands that's where he's supposed to take out his aggression and he's never taken it out on anything living. But also, I'll never give him that opportunity.

That poor boxer! Although I believe dogs (animals in general) do have emotions that we can recognize and relate to, they are still all wired differently than us. People have a tendency these days to think of their pets, especially dogs are just like children. They are not. I believe there are ways to manage dogs that have aggressive tendencies towards other dogs, kids, strangers etc., but it is a commitment that you can never take for granted. You can train them to reduce the chances of an attack, but you can never rely on that training especially when they're not directly supervised. You have to remove the opportunities for them to fail. In other words, you don't test your training skills with a dog that doesn't like children by sitting a child in front of it. You train so that you know that you can control your dog's behavior should an unavoidable interaction of some type occur, but you can never take it for granted.

    2. The same dogs can release their frustration on weekends, unattended, uncontrolled, the way they like to
    3. some of these dogs have shown aggressions (provoked a fight) towards the others without much intervention of the owners
    4. some are showing aggressions around resources without the owners‘ intervention

I wouldnt want a pitbull if it was the last breed of dog on the planet.and I am a massive dog lover.
Its got nothing to do with how the dog is raised and EVERYTHING to do with genetics, which you CANNOT change.
Pitbulls were bred for killing, thats years of genetics creating a breed with a purpose in mind.
Sadly people seem to be immune to this statement and reality.
I most certainly would never have a jack Russell along with a pack of dogs that contain pitbulls either.
I will be happy to see the number of pitbulls dwindle around the world when people catch a wake up as to how lethally dangerous they are.
And to all those pitbull owners that will diss me and this post, ive been a trainer, a rescue worker for a long time. I would never work with a pitbull, nor would I ever rescue a pitbull, nor would I ever encourage a person to adopt a pitbull.
Ive seen enough to know this breed should not exist.
I have heard too many horror stories about pitbulls.
Any dog can be dangerous in certain conditions, but a pitbull is a ticking time bomb, it can be lovely for years and one day it might turn on you, your family or your other pets, and remember the physiology of this breed will ensure your mangled toast, ive worked with many large breeds of dogs for many years, and helped with various large breed dogs with problem backgrounds, but I wouldnt give a pitbull the time of day.
Pitbulls are problem dogs due to their genetics, they dont belong in suburbs, nor amongst families and other pets.
Dont ever say you weren't warned.
The fatalities due to pitbull attacks in my country are massive, because people think they make great guard dogs, dont make this mistake either.
Dogs come with great responsibility, if you dont have the time to spend with a dog, dont get one.

She is fortunately other dog friendly and if i’m away more than a few hours we have a doggie daycare for her to run off that lab energy. Since reading this, I picked up a thought. A remarkable trainer mentioned that any time a dog is triggered to thinking something else is PREY, they can attack and kill. So the dogs might have been normally o.k., but something triggered excitement and the PREY reflex kicked-in. So, in part a lack of levels of training, but dogs that are working dogs, needing a lot of exercise and needing strong social training, you can't necessarily ever take your eyes off them. So caging or separating when not under direct human (trained) supervision is vital... Being at risk includes kids, adults, dogs, cats and going out on walks, to dog parks, etc.

She visited w the friends who's grandbaby was in town for only a couple more hours. She then went shopping. When she came home (late) her house was destroyed. Stuff was broken, knocked over, ...even the slider glass was cracked. Fur & blood were everywhere. Every single cat was dead- however, not eaten. Oh yes they can. I'm a dog trainer and I do it daily. I take a pack of dogs off-leash on a three-hour long hike with dogs, kids, bikers, joggers, puppies, dog haters, coyotes, deer, fisher cats, etc. I work with all types of breeds, sizes, and attitudes so I'm built for looking for any signs of challenging and I will pin any dog in an instant to avoid it. A real alpha is a parent and nothing more and they pin their pups even when they are fully grown if they dare challenge their parents. Study the wolves since dogs are domesticated wolves and still need a real leader in their life. Real parent wolves do not let their siblings challenge each other without being challenged by the alpha themselves. I've worked with very aggressive Pits, Dobies, Akitas, etc... they are all trainable and most people are not training their dogs properly. They even admitted here that they were "indoor dogs". No dog is an "indoor dog". Humans created this absolute mess, so humans must deal with it. Blaming the breed is an excuse for not taking responsibility for raising your dog properly, much like what we must do with our human children but who's gonna admit when they screwed up raising a kid? Not many! Therefore, most humans simply do not have any clue about dogs and suffer the consequences by having a domesticated wolf living in a DEN for most of its life, which is as unnatural is it gets. P.S. Wanna know the real truth? The real truth is that the smaller dogs are the absolute worst and most dangerous when they are bad because your wonderful humans let them get away with that behavior of attacking people or dogs because the dogs are so small. All it takes is one little dog to be an alpha and lead another few dogs around to start a fight and I've seen it many times. We can discuss this all day long as I'm packed with stories about how dumb humans are, how most aren't prepared to have a dog, and how most simply argue that a dog is not a domesticated wolf and is some other kind of creature "evolved" from wolves. If I could write a test that people would have to pass in order to get a dog or a have a kid, most people would fail.

The "Alpha" dog training method and pinning dogs is old school, and isn't necessary, also if you were to try and pin my male Belgian Malinois you'd get bit and it would be your own fault. Also Alpha male wolves drive off males that hit sexual maturity and don't allow them to stay in the pack.
pit bulls were bred to be animal aggressive, with a high prey drive to be used for bull baiting, dog fighting and are still used for dog fighting and also boar hunting in the south. @@ShieldMaiden452 I don't care about breeds and never have. I never will. I see them all as wolves so I couldn't care what breed they are as the breed is only the specialty of the wolf. Whether it's fighting, herding, running fast, jumping high, chasing prey, etc, it doesn't matter to me. They are all fully capable of being trained if you're a real trainer and have a clue about what you're doing when they are puppies. If they are older or rescues who are aggressive, they get muzzled and I use a prong collar or e-collar. All of my puppies, adolescents, and adults get pinned when they show aggression or fight because I'm mimicking the behavior of their dog/wolf parents and nothing more. You can call it old school all you like since you love to keep listing to other lost humans about this topic, but try to tell that to a mother or father dog or wolf! I use the ways of the wolves to train them all and it never fails. I seek out aggressive behavior to nip it in the bud. I do this with every breed, every age, every situation. Sure, you have to be more sensitive than others due to some of their histories, but in the end, they ALL assimilate to the pack, regardless of breed, age, size, shape, history, and attitude. I've done it too many times to count. None of the dogs are mine and I take the rules of the wolves as serious as it gets. 99.9% of the time we are exploring off leash and everyone's been over-sensitized to every type of situation there is at a park/state park/conservation land. I train them to not chase deer, to not chase and kill, I've grabbed pit bulls by their heads when they catch prey and have made them drop it. I allow hunting in certain areas but not in others. Dogs are to be useful and when you're in a park like we hit daily, it is critical that none of them show aggression at all in any way whatsoever. I use e-collars, pinch collars, and prong collars when I need. Remember, parent wolves and dogs do not need any e-collar or any tool to train their pups, especially the more dominant ones who may have learned to be dominant at the nipple. I've seen too many times where someone's got a dominant dog and they're not correcting him/her. Because of my mighty wolf rules, we get to explore 99.9% of the time off-leash, they get almost complete freedom to be themselves, and you can bet if I needed to train them to hunt and kill larger game, I would in about a day. I pack them up so I can study them as domesticated wolves, not dog breeds. I'm a pack trainer and when you have so many dogs, breeds become moot as they all speak the same language. Dogs are serious business and most people simply have no clue. That's really not my problem or my job to fix this broken mess. Keep thinking a dog is a breed and you will fail every time. Is this why I'm always the 3rd or 4th trainer at someone's house? It's so sad I can't even make videos about it yet.
And when it comes to wolves, watch any wolf documentary and you will see that many wolves stay in the pack for life and are happy to be subordinates. Not all of them are driven out by the "alpha". And remember the "alphas" are ALWAYS the parents! Are your children going to be the alphas in your family? NO. The parents are top dogs, and the grandparents are even higher. Grandparents do not take sh8t from grandchildren. This is nature. My oldest dogs have seniority over the younger ones due to experience. Many younger wolves can be more powerful than the alpha and up front on a hunt but they still have to wait for the older more experienced wolves to come from behind and make the death kill. This has been documented many times. Just because a younger wolf or dog is powerful does not immediately get him respect in the wild. People screw this up all day long in our world. Most humans get pits and other powerful breeds to show off or use as guard dogs so they are not training them as they should nor are they socializing them. And with the story above, you certainly don't keep four dogs in a house all day long no matter what breed! Trapping wolves is bad enough, no need to trap dogs in your house for life.

What to do in the event of a dog attack:
If two dogs are squabbling a sudden loud noise can interrupt them. If one is advancing on another, throwing a blanket or jacket over their head can prevent them from continuing the attack(because they lose sight of their victim) and can also help you remove them without them seeing you and redirecting.
I would advise against physical involvement such as pepper spraying or hitting because the dog may A. not feel it if they are intensely engaged, or B. the dog may only be warning you or another dog away and have no intention of exacerbating involvement. If you harm this dog they will receive YOU as the attacker and feel the need to defend themself! Even if the dog had thoughts of fighting from the beginning, a lower-intensity approach could have called the attack off, while physical involvement could make the dog blow over.
If a dog latches onto another animal or person, the best way to remove them is to choke them out. If the dog is not wearing a collar a lease, belt, purse strap, etc. will work. If you can get something around the dog's neck place it just behind the ears, lift up and twist. This suppresses blood flow to the brain, so the dog will either open its mouth to get air or pass out. Once the mission is accomplished, release before the dog dies (a dog that is this intense of a fighter may well be put down, but who wants to be the one to kill a dog?)
If a dog is displacing aggression towards you, stand still, (but not stiff) fold your arms, and look away. This communicates that your intentions are peaceful. If you are attacked, drop to the ground and lay still, becoming entirely non-threatening. Eventually, the dog will walk away, at which point you may begin to slowly crawl away. Some people think they can fight a dog off and you're welcome to go for it, but your better off not trying to assert your dominance.
I would like to add that until you spend years living with, interacting with, and researching the science, origin, and nature of any animal, please don't judge it. Chihuahuas have killed infants and Pitbulls have saved infants. If you don't want a Pitbull that's okay, if you don't like Pitbulls, that's okay, if you judge someone else for owning a Pitbull, that's not okay. 1 million Pitbull type dogs are killed in shelters in the U.S. every year. These are not dogs that have attacked anyone. These are not dogs with bite histories. They are puppies, they are well-mannered dogs that love kids and other dogs, and they are dogs who are best friends with a cat. They are innocent victims of uneducated people who heard something on the news. Tragically some people died at the hand of a Pitbull, but even so, every word I've written here marks one more dog that will die without ever getting to play fetch with its human, because it will never have one. Millions of dogs will never sleep in a fuzzy bed, but on an old blanket on a concrete floor, because no one will take it home. Dogs have and continue to die by the hundreds every day simply because they were born with the appearance and title of Pitbull. End racism, hate, and BSL.

I hear news every day about pit bulls attacking and killing people. This would be a horrific death. All these comments about bad owners don't really matter when a dog or groups of dogs kill someone. If the dog was a smaller weaker dog a human would stand a better chance. You can't argue with that. .pits are muscular strong dogs with huge strong mouths. Why risk it? Do you really love the breed that much? Just stop producing them. I had two dogs I got from a friend who rescued their mother. Supposed to be half lab and half German shepherd. I wanted big dogs because my house was in an iffy location. The yard was fenced. They certainly fid their job because no one came in my yard. But when the male got older he got out of the yard. I did everything I could think of but could not keep him in. I moved. Still couldn't keep him in. He killed anything in his territory except my cats and my jack Russell puppy. He seemed to know what belonged to me. After he almost killed a neighbor dog I had to get.rid of him. My vet found him another home because I just couldn't kill him. On a big farm I think. He was a very big dog and brindle in color. Everyone said he had pit in him because of his behavior. I just couldn't risk going to jail because he killed a person. Of course, he was very good and protective to me.
