  • Pilots Zoya Agarwal and Rajalakshmi Eshwar debunk 11 myths about flying. They talk about why cabin air doesn't make you sick, the effects of flying on your body, and why you shouldn't worry about turbulence. They also debunk the myth that autopilot flies the plane for them. In fact, they give all the commands for it and monitor it regularly.
Agarwal is a pilot in command for Air India, flying the Boeing 777 aircraft. She is the first woman commander to fly over the North Pole, together with an all-female crew, on one of the longest air routes in the world. You can learn more about her work here: captainzoya.com/
Eshwar is a first officer for Air India, flying the Boeing 777 aircraft. She's been with the airline for the past 13 years.

Fun fact: planes and the information they gather, help us to predict weather patterns and give weather forecasts. Since covid and the lack of flights started our forecasts haven't been able to be as accurate.

No. That is not correct. There are currently multiple redundant and primary systems in place for this. The flight industry is more of a tertiary monitoring and data gathering function.

True they do gather alot of data, not sure how well it’s been used though outside of the industry itself. But the whole weather system for (& possibly from?) the flight industry is quite advanced, thats for sure.

So true!! And the bigger the time difference the more in advance you should plan ahead!! So say if it's 1 hour, you could do a day or 2 prior. But if it's 10 to 12 I would do a week of 2 in advance. Then break your cycle for the day of the flight and get back into it when you've arrived :) I don't think pilots have this luxury though :(

If you are generally interested in aviation, I can also recommend the UA-cam channel "Mentour Pilot". He is a pilot with loads of videos in which he explains all kinds of technical stuff and fun facts, but also analyses famous incidents and accidents (in a very professional way, yet easy to understand). One of his goals is always to help people with a fear of flying and to show just how incredibly much has to go wrong in order for an aircraft to have an accident - and in case of something bad happening, how much control the pilots still have in order to get everyone down safely (contrary to common belief, I'd say...). Those videos definitely helped me get a clearer sense of the situation when I'm flying.

      @draintheswamp1588 2 роки тому +1

Jessica S, if you get a headache, it's most likely due to uneven air pressure in your ears. I used to drive a bus from Sacramento to Reno and back a lot. That elevation is 7,100' at Donner's Pass. You just need to equalize that pressure by a BIG yawn to pop your ears. Open your mouth as wide as you can to open the airways between your ears and nasal cavity. You could also plug your nose and try to inhale, or chew gum. The yawn is easiest and it gets you out of boring conversations too, LOL.

One thing I found from my one long flight experience: so we flew from LA at around 1:00 AM local time, and I was determined to stay up until it was a decent time to sleep at the destination timezone. I managed it, and passed out almost instantly
Although I didn't sleep well on the plane because it was 13 hours and we were in economy, trying to transition to the timezone the day of seemed to help. I did go to bed early on arrival day at 6 PM of the destination timezone, but I was far from dead during the day the whole time we were there. The total timezone transition was from Mountain Daylight Time to the Australian Eastern Standard Time.
Coming back, our flight was at around 6 AM AEST, and because it was day and I had previously adjusted to AEST, I hardly slept at all during the flight (just dozed here and there) and was awake for pretty much 24 hours straight before we got home and I got to sleep. I was dead during the day for about a month. So bottom line? Try and adjust to your destination timezone a day or so before you get there

The more you fly the easier it gets. During the past six years, I've been flying two or three times a year. It used to scare the crap out of me, and now I don't even think twice about it. I think the more normal something becomes, the less frightening it is. So my advice is just do it. Accept that you're going to be scared at first and do it anyway. You can always let the flight crew know how you feel, and they'll go out of their way to make you feel more comfortable. Just think about all the fun times and great memories you will have with your loved ones.

I hate turbulences not because I'm afraid that it will bring the plane down, I just hate the general feeling of not being able to predict/anticipate that sensation of being dropped suddenly.
If I'm traveling by land/sea, I can kind of see that there's a bump on the road, a slope/hill, or the surface of the sea but in a plane I can't see shit and it makes me brace myself for a turbulence all throughout the entire flight.
It's tiring as hell and it makes my stomach hurts.

Alcohol dehydrates but a beer is mostly water and 3-6% alcohol. This means that it's possible for certain low alcoholic beverages to still hydrate you. It's also a myth that soda dehydrates you. It's mostly water again, so it hydrates you. Coffee contains caffiene, which is a mild dieretic, which means that it causes you lose water, but it's called "a mild dieretic", and coffee and tea won't dehydrate you, they will hydrate you.
These are the questions I asked when it was mid/late 2020 and without a job.

great video! I love traveling but it's great to learn a bit more and to debunk some of these thoughts people have. I've only had terrible turbulance once and it only lasted a few mins on an already short 1hr flight, and jet lag you just have to adjust- if you want to enjoy your holiday. By staying up and sleeping/eating at their local time I could adjust within a day.
A great way to face your fear is just to do it, fly more and you might either be ok with it or start to enjoy it. I strongly disliked answering phones and I got a job as a receptionist and now it's much easier.

From memory (at least in NZ), you can buy melatonin over the counter at most pharmacies. I'm not a pharmacist, or a doctor, but I would have thought (at least from my physiology background), that if you use melatonin in short doses exclusively when arriving in different country's, it would help with adjusting to the new country's hours faster (again, I'm not a doctor).

When i took my first long haul flight (London Gatwick - Vancouver) i thought Jet Lag was a tiredness thing. I think it was the word "Lag" that threw me. I expected to feel tired and... well, laggy.
But no! My first night in Vancouver everyone wanted to go to bed but i was wide awake & raring to go!
It was then i realised that "Lag" applied to time, not my body.
Although, for the first few nights there were some parties so Jet Lag isn't all bad! To feel wide awake at the best part of the night was brilliant!
So now, that's how i treat Jet Lag. There was a UK psychiatrist, R. D. Laing, who discovered a technique called "Reframing".
He told someone who couldn't sleep that it wasn't insomnia, but that they were blessed with wakefulness & to get up & use this extra time to do something.
So, now when I'm somewhere where everyone is asleep I'll go walkabout. Especially by the sea in moonlight.
I get to see another side of the places i visit.
It doesn't last long. Your body clock adapts to the light levels & adjusts do eventually you drop into the time zone you're in. But those first couple of nights i find absolutely magical.

5:22 I feel like people are being mislead by this statistic and it's understandable. Statistic without the context can always be very very misleading. So, always keep that in your mind. Anyway, the frequency of people driving cars> frequency of people piloting airplanes. So, the data doesn't prove that airplanes are safer than cars.
It's like saying "look, in 2021 the deaths caused by nuclear bombs is less than deaths caused by vending machine. Therefore, vending machines are definitely safer than nuclear bombs. We should all have nuclear wars because of how safe it is"
That being said, I'm not saying airplanes aren't safe. Seeing their procedures and methods that the airplane crew takes to keep us safe makes me say that it is safe. I'm not even saying it is not safer than cars (or vice versa). I just don't like it when people get mislead by data/statistic. So, if the data is how many crashes there are / their frequency of use. Then, we can know whether it's safe or not.
Also, I just wanna point out another misleading data that I really really really hate because if how popular it is. Shark are less dangerous than cows or sharks are not dangerous or the odds of you dying due to sharks are low. Now, I'm not saying this is false or true. But people like to say this and use the statistic of how many deaths caused by shark vs how many deaths caused by cows to prove their claim. Of course there'd be less deaths caused by sharks. We aren't sea creatures that encounters sharks on a regular basis (well most of us). Black holes kill 0 people this year but it doesn't mean that it's safe.

Also one more myth: only the captain flys the plane. NO! Both pilots fly the plane but they do not control the plane together. In simple words, one pilots flys while the other pilot monitors. Usually, a flight has 2 legs, an outbound flight from base and an inbound flight from base. Just to give an example, in the outbound flight, maybe the captain flys the plane while the first officer monitors. Monitoring means talking to ATC and helping the pilot flying reduces his/her work load. In the inbound leg, the first officer will be the one flying if the captain did the outbound flight.

Air travel is the safest not only because of all the safety measures, but because you’re surrounded in every direction by open air, whereas driving, even above the vehicle it’s not really safe, you’re in close proximity to a lot of things that can destroy your vehicle and kill you. With aircraft or spacecraft , it’s taking off and landing that’s the dangerous part, whereas with driving it’s mainly the opposite.
I now get why people say pilots are sexy. It’s not the looks or the uniform. These are pilots! That’s hot. They’re not bus drivers or fast food cashiers.
So autopilot isn’t really auto at all. It’s more like in Star Trek where there’s no flight stick, but they’re still piloting the vessel.

Not in particular: up at 30,000 ft you have plenty of time to
      1) set best glide speed (the plane does not just fall out of sky)
      2) find a suitable landing spot
      3) do cause checks, call mayday if necessary, and other calculations
So really, if it’s double engine failure/cabin fire/etc. The crew can handle them all
and since most jets have two engines, one engine failure is not even a big deal
Even for us General Aviation pilots flying with one set of engine, we are taught early on how to deal with these in flight emergencies and we would not be able to solo unless we demonstrate we understand how to deal with them

There are more car accidents yes but more people use automobiles. This doesn't take into account the types of accidents. You are way more likely to walk away from a fenser bender than you are plummeting to your death from 35k feet or a flubbed takeoff/landing.

How would you prefer to look at the data?
Deaths per capita per mile? Deaths per capita per hour? Deaths per capita, only? How are you looking at the data to come up with your assertion? In every meaningful way, commercial air travel is substantially safer than personal automobiles, buses, and trains. According to the data available for global, or just the U.S.A., causes of death, no other form of transportation even comes close to being as safe as commercial air. Even walking is riskier, whether per mile or per hour, rural or urban, especially if you include injuries and not just deaths.

you clearly don't understand how statistics works. If only one person travels and that person dies - then the chances of dying are 100% and that's horrible, but if the person survives then the chances are 0%. You're implying that the latter is happenning in air travel which it isn't. The amount of passangers on planes is big enough to say that there is no lack of data that can skew the statistics in a meaningful way.
