  • Badd Medicine here and its reaction time
    In the second installment of Stephenie Meyer's phenomenally successful "Twilight" series, the romance between mortal and vampire soars to a new level as Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) delves deeper into the mysteries of the supernatural world she yearns to become part of-only to find herself in greater peril than ever before.
    Following Bella's ill-fated 18th birthday party, Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) and his family abandon the town of Forks, Washington, in an effort to protect her from the dangers inherent in their world. As the heartbroken Bella sleepwalks through her senior year of high school, numb and alone, she discovers Edward's image comes to her whenever she puts herself in jeopardy. Her desire to be with him at any cost leads her to take greater and greater risks.
    With the help of her childhood friend Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner), Bella refurbishes an old motorbike to carry her on her adventures. Bella's frozen heart is gradually thawed by her budding relationship with Jacob, a member of the mysterious Quileute tribe, who has a supernatural secret of his own.
    When a chance encounter brings Bella face to face with a former nemesis, only the intervention of a pack of supernaturally large wolves saves her from a grisly fate, and the encounter makes it frighteningly clear that Bella is still in grave danger. In a race against the clock, Bella learns the secret of the Quileutes and Edward's true motivation for leaving her. She also faces the prospect of a potentially deadly reunion with her beloved that is a far cry from the one she'd hoped for

    When I went and saw this at the midnight showing in the theater, when Jacob took his shirt off after Bella hit the rock, a dude stood up in the middle of our theater, started clapping and yelled, “That’s the only reason I came here!” And then proceeded to exit the theater. I was laughing for days. Now I think of him every time I watch this movie. I hope he eventually watched the whole movie lol

    It's important to remember that Jacob was NEVER an option lol
    Even in the books, she talks about how Jacob distracts her from how much she misses Edward, but it's only temporary. As soon as Edward is back, she goes back to him.

    • @melindamercier6811
      @melindamercier6811 Рік тому +193

      EXACTLY. Although, in Team Jacob’s defense, these movies all make Edward look like a personality-less jerk. The books were so SO much better at leaving this a broken triangle bc Bella had no desire to pursue Jacob in a romantic way. The movies were just all about the made up love triangle.

    • @mjm3091
      @mjm3091 Рік тому +96

      It's also important to mention that Jacob was significantly younger than Bella. Not even age wise, but emotionally. He is 15 and she is 18 for majority of this part (he is hits 16 around when he becomes wolf). A difference between a child and young adult that is starting their mature life, that's also why Bella never considers him a love interest. Because even if Meyer did do that creepy "fast maturing" thing for the shapeshifters, he is still a teen through all parts.

      Well, she DID love Jacob, it was yust that her adiciton to Edward was much stronger... In The third book, near the end, when she kisses Jacob for real, she has a flashback of a life she could have had with him. And later, in the end, when she tells Jacob her final decision, she said, that a part of her heart broke as well. In my mind, when I read the books, I always thought that Edward was an adiction for her, while with Jacob she really created that bond from friendship to love, which seemed much healthier for me. Of course, theese books have more red flags than a soviet army, but, all things considered, she actually HAD A RELATIONSHIP with Jacob. It was never so with Edward - she kinda just got lovestruck and never came out of it...

All of us cuddled up watching it and because of that I fell in love with it, because of what it did for her and how we could all bond over it. I still don’t think it’s a good movie but I absolutely get what you guys are saying about nostalgia and linking the film with a core memory. That scene with the camera spinning around and the photos on her walls showing how she's cut people off and is just more and more alone, then the look she gives Charlie when he tries to snap her out of it - exactly how I feel fairly regularly. They rip/destroy their clothing when turning, hence why they wear as little as possible (or basically always shirtless with shorts) - in the books its talked about that Billy is struggling to keep buying Jake new clothes. Maybe interesting background info: This was never supposed to be a saga- Meyer had a dream about the meadow scene in twilight and just wanted a straight up romance, but her publisher told her that she needed a bit more action, that's why James Victoria and Laurent show up so late ( in the books literally nothing happens except romance for the first 3/4) and then she had written a sequel, the original final book, Forever Dawn, which is in large parts what is now the last book / last two movies. But then Twilight got really popular and her publishing house urged her to write more, and that's were New Moon and Ecplipse and the whole werewolves and love triangle stuff came in. Orginially, she hadn't really planned any of this, which is why the story feels a little stretched out in parts and isn't well developed ( no to say Meyer is a writer of masterpieces, but maybe you know what I mean). Twilight was always intendet as a sappy wish fullfillment story, and then got turned into a "Saga" because of its success, making it sound way more important than it was intended

Jasper was changed during the American Civil War by a different vampire and spent many years feeding on humans. Eventually, he left his creator and met Alice who took them to the Cullens because she had seen visions of their future together with the Cullens. The fact that he spent so long on a human diet probably makes it harder for him, than say for Rosalie who has never had a drop of human blood.

I think it just makes everyone feel better about the age difference so its more enjoyable, which isnt necessarily a bad thing. But I still completely understand the Answer's overall distaste for the issue. That being said, the most realistic thing in this entire series is how they portrayed teen age girl depression in that scene with bella sitting in the same position for months. In the book, it was juts empty pages with the names of the month on each page. It hit hard when I was 16 and still kinda does.

  • @ESCLuciaSlovakia
    @ESCLuciaSlovakia Рік тому +58

    Hi guys! Enjoying your reactions. Here some explanations. Something very important that the movies left out is that it's not really about love. Three points: First, Edward is not human, he is a supernatural being, a vampire, has no heartbeat, he is a walking dead and a killing monster. As a predator, he has some supernatural qualities that make his prey feel an irresistible attraction to him, so he can kill her. That's why Bella is so strongly, irrationaly attracted to him. Not because she's a teenager in love, but in the first place, she is under the effects of his supernatural gifts.
    Second, humans can have blood which attracts a specific vampire irresistibly. Bella has a special type of blood that attracts Edward like that. He even says her blood is his "own personal brand of heroin". He can smell it. That's why he says he can't live without her, he is under the effects of her blood. They are not "normally in love", this is a story about supernatural attraction between a human and a monster, putting them both in danger, but they can't avoid it, because it's not love what's making them want to be together so much, it's the supernatural predator vs prey attraction and adiction. They are technically under the love potion spell. There is nothing rational there by design.
    Third, Bella in the books is supposed to be a very unsatisfied with her life as a human, not only by being clumsy all the time. She really doesn't feel good in her own human skin. After she gets to know the vampires, she realises that this is the way of life she was born to live. She feels very attracted not only to Edward, but also to his lifestyle, because it's all that she wants for herself to feel alive. A vampire life is her life purpose and she wants it, with or without Edward. That's why she wants him to turn her so desperately. She was born to be a vampire, not a human. Rosalie wasn't, she was turned without her consent, of course she feels different about it. This is, in my opinion, one of the most important messages in Twilight and they didn't even mention it in the movies - it's about Bella finding out who she really is.
    Also, in the books it is very clear that Edward is very oldschool, that's why he want's to marry her in such a young age, because it was the norm in his times. Even Bella knows it's oldschool. He is supposed to be very oldschool also with his clothes and way of speaking and he wasn't in love with anyone else before, because nobody had that special blood like Bella has - and we are back to why he wants her so much. Not really love, but supernatural attraction to her blood.
    The movies are, in my opinion, terrible, both screenplay and the actors, but they're good for a laugh and nostalgy, I still watch them. Books are definitely better, the movies turned the real meaning of the story into a cheap lovestory without even explaining a single thing.

And I think the movie thing with her window is an extremely faithful adaptation of that part of the book, it captures the exact same vibe!
    It's not a great book (or movie) about mental health, teenage angst, etc. by any means, and it certainly doesn't tell young girls how to get through it (y'know without finding a boy and that "fixes" everything...) but that scene was insanely good at communicating the emotions the reader (and viewer) was supposed to feel - especially if they were part of the target audience.

    • @mjm3091
      @mjm3091 Рік тому

      Target audience was middle aged women, also I definitely disagree on the notion about emotions readers should have felt. The books are not that deep or well written. And were more of a romantised copy of angst present in older stories that Meyers stanned (including a lot of Bronte books).
      And the blank pages to me were more of a cope-out from actually trying to show the depth of mental states that Bella went through or at least was supposed to go through. Book mostly tells you how she feels, doesn't really show it, aside mopey zombie like version of depression.
      Meyers grew over the years with her skills, but that was nothing more than waste of paper.

    • @user-es7ui5mc1m
      @user-es7ui5mc1m Рік тому +4

      @@mjm3091 The target audience most definitely were not middle aged women, the books were always in the YA section of the book store and library, teen magazines filled with info on the movies and stars, etc. Middle aged moms just also got in on it for some reason. Just like there are Disney adults, there were Twilight moms, doesn't mean Disney movies suddenly aren't kids movies.
      And because it is for a teen audience, I don't think it was a cop out. Of course, if she were to do this all the time or even if it was common in books of the genre or if it were a serious adult literary fiction about mental illness or something, it would absolutely seem like a cheap cop out, but in the context of what the book is (a YA romance about sparkling vampires!), to me it was a good representation of the emptiness of depression. Especially in hindsight (like when months have passed and looking back they just feel empty). The emptiness *is* the showing. I'm definitely not arguing that twilight is this great piece of literature or that it's super deep or even that SMeyer was or is great at writing emotions but in context and for the audience (which, like I said, were teen girls) the blank pages were a clever depiction imo.

    Man they're killing me😂 I assure you, Twilights main demo wasn't 17 year old girls. It was more like 12 year old girls. Not bashing, was one of those 10-12 year old girls who thought these books were masterpieces and the movies cinematic marvels. Now I'm 25. And there's nostalgia there....but an absolute abundance of cringing and if Bella was my sister I'd be waving red banners around Edward and Jake both from day one minute one.

    As a female currently in the "friendzone", I agree that it can be a toxic situation. It's painful maintaining a friendship with someone you're in love with. Which is why I don't blame some men when they fall for their female friend and then when they get rejected, they end the friendship. Women like to villainize men for ending friendships after rejection, but it's not until you go through it yourself that you understand why it's probably the best decision for your mental health.

    • @JeM130177
      @JeM130177 Рік тому +13

      Better to end the friendship than to not accept it. I generally hate the term friendzone because it usually implies a guy is getting treated badly just because the girl he likes doesn't return his feelings when really no one is entitled to requited feelings just because they're not a bad person. If someone has the nouse to say "i can't just be your friend because I'm in love with you" then all power to them honestly.

    • @Iflie
      @Iflie Рік тому +1

      To me friendzone is just a person who will never be a prospective partner. But guys especially seem to see far more females as prossible partners even just for sex. And they have a fragile ego about that female they've been nice to doesn't like them in that way. So they get mad, "I've been so nice to you and now you don't want to ave sex with me? WhY?" If the friendship was genuine they wouldn't be so mad.
      Now removing yourself is healthy, being angry is not.

    To me the Twilight books and movies feel very inspired by the literature of the Romantic Era and Sturm und Drang sentiments, where every emotion is very enlarged, intense and dramatic. I'm thinking of the works of people like Percy Shelley or Lord Byron - and perhaps especially Goethes The Sorrows of Young Werther. And of course, stories about vampires, werewolves and other monsters were a big part of the Romantic genre too.
    And honestly, it feels quite liberating with a love story that doesn't have to make logical sense - that is all just about senseless and illogical feeling. You're probably right that these books or movies could not have come out today, because today it is all about logic and morals - and that's a pity I think, because I do think we crave these types of stormy, dreamy and "dangerous" fantasy love stories as well.

      Yeah, nah. I can't agree with this. Given my background, a lot of the themes and behaviors in this movie alone reflect a lot of what mental health, addiction, unhealthy coping and obsession is about, and those dangerous themes are very real and very detrimental. That can neither be glossed over nor ignored in favor of romanticism, if anything, it makes the whole romance unpalatable.

    He explains in the first movie, but it does pass by unnoticed sometimes cause people are focusing on the other things happening, that his SCENT, his LOOKS, EVERYTHING about him is made to pull you in, is made to attract you, thats how vampires hunt. Thats their vennon talking. The vennon scent, the vennon taste. So when he kisses her, shes tasting it. Whne he is around her, she`s engulfed by it. She is addicted to him. Its a drug. A literal drug. So when he leaves, she goes through withdraw. It's not supposed to be romantic, it's not supposed to make it okay to be that way missing someone, it's literally showing what withdraw does to people, and what getting over it feels like, and the fight that it is constantly. But she learns how to cope, and that makes their relationship way healthier, once she learns how to love him, not his vennon, and she sees past that.
    People just tend not to see it, but it's there. Gets clearer on the next one, when he talks about her blood and his addiction to it. And then on the last one, when she actually sees clearly wihtout that.

Jacob, in the other hand, kissed Bella without her consent right after she said she didn't want anything romantic with him. Also, as soon as Edward is back, she immediatly goes back to him, which shows how much she wants HIM. I’ll admit, when Twilight first came out I was obsessed. Like OBSESSED. Of course for the love story of it but the vampires and werewolves (big fantasy/supernatural/sci-fi fan) and the “omg team Edward or team Jacob”, everything. But I was 11 so I can’t be mad that I loved these so much lol but as I got older and would rewatch them my thoughts and views obviously changed. The Oak hit it right on the nail that it’s the nostalgia of watching it. I’m going to be 26 now and I watch it purely for comedy and fun and get a kick out of it every time. Is the acting bad? Yes. Is the writing/themes bad? Yes. Is the production bad? Yes, though I think there are a few gems of cinematography throughout the whole series but that’s as much as they’ll get from me.
    Overall, don’t sweat giving a low score and offending any of us because we all expect it. It’s bad. THE CAST THEMSELVES SAY IT WAS SO BAD. We just have a good laugh watching you guys have a laugh or suffering wishing you were doing literally anything else in this world (Answer I feel your pain).
