We almost forgot how funny 90's (late 90's in this case) comedies were. Brought back some memories with these scenes. It's like some one followed us around and wrote a script. Great to see Heath Ledger again and Julia Stiles. It feels like she was in everything in the late 90's, early 2000's. The music in here was soooo 90's too! Overall fun comedy. We really enjoyed this one.
Kat Stratford (Julia Stiles) is beautiful, smart and quite abrasive to most of her fellow teens, meaning that she doesn't attract many boys. Unfortunately for her younger sister, Bianca (Larisa Oleynik), house rules say that she can't date until Kat has a boyfriend, so strings are pulled to set the dour damsel up for a romance. Soon Kat crosses paths with handsome new arrival Patrick Verona (Heath Ledger).

Heath Ledger was one of the best actors of his generation. His performances in this movie, "The Dark Knight", and "Brokeback Mountain" combine to make a masterclass in acting. I realize it may not be a film you would necessarily choose to react to, but "Brokeback Mountain" is definitely worth your time just to see his performance. The building in the movie used for a high school "that looks like Hogwarts" is in fact a REAL HIGH SCHOOL in Tacoma WA. its Stadium high school. I am from the area and it's a pride of the community. It was originally built to be a fancy hotel, but pacific railroad (who owned it at the time of building) ran out of money to finish it properly, so they stopped building it. it sat empty for a few years until the school district bought it and turned it into a high school. the rest as they say, "is history".

Looking back, I really love all these characters. Each is flawed, manipulative to some extent, and a touch narcissistic - but these are high school kids. They aren't exactly known for stellar choices and brilliant decision making, they're kids. Cameron probably should have gotten at least some comeuppance for being the spark for all this. All over getting a girl. Then again, Cameron and Bianca are kind of the perfect for each other little scheming couple and I see that working out for them as characters.

🤣Omg, I love how much y'all loved this. I was a freshman when this came out and it was perfect at portraying all the insecurities and emotions that teenagers go through. There was an explosion of teen movies between '98 and '02ish (hence the need for Not Another Teen Movie, lol). So many great ones, but this one is my all-time favorite. The cast, the writing, everything. It honestly surprised me how much y'all laughed at the stitches joke, which made me laugh even more.
I'll suggest it again, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies if you're willing to check out a crazy twist on the classic. High stakes, badass women, gore, battles, and lots of verbal *and* physical sparring 😏. I recently showed it to my friend, who was extremely skeptical, and within the first 10 minutes, she was loving it. Another great one is Warm Bodies. Great cast and writing.

Remember when this came out right when I was about to enter high school. Was kind of a relief to have a movie with normal characters who all had quirks. Was kind of a relief. As a teen who had a hard time even pretending to give a f about half of the stuff I was involved with every day the Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger roles were kind of a relief. Coming out of the crushing conformity of middle school...this movie felt needed at the time. Loved her honesty in the breakdown scene at the end. It's based on Shakespeare so it had that degree of timelessness...but is also the most late 90's thing imaginable. Good stuff.

As to your request - my sister and I couldn't be much more different and this was indeed a lot like our relationship. For reference, though, I graduated high school in 1996. I identified with Kat so hard 😂 And my little sister didn't have Bianca's popularity, but she was definitely the socialite. We drifted for a while in her college years, but even then she'd drop in when she was in town. Now our parents are both gone and we're close - live in the same town just to have family near.

Other Heath Ledger films to consider:
A Knights Tale - listed as an adventure comedy with great music and the cast includes Paul Bettany.
Lords of Dogtown - plays the manager Skip Engblom of skateboarders in Venice, CA in the 70's. The (his) crew includes Tony Alva and Stacy Perault.
    Casanova
Four Feathers - Plays a British Officer in 1875.
    Patriot
The Brothers Grimm - with Matt Damon.
The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus - This was his last film and he had not completed some of the scenes prior to his passing. Jude Law, Johnny Depp, and Colin Farrell played various versions of Heath's character to complete the film. The trio gave their salaries from that movie to Heath's daughter. Terry Gilliam films are often considered an acquired taste, but they are usually very good and this one is no different. Worth a watch.

This movie gets funnier with age. I remember seeing it in theaters when it first came out and laughing throughout. This came out during the time when a lot of Shakespeare plays were being adapted as teen flicks. I remember this one and also Get Over It with Kirsten Dunst which was a teen version of A Midsummer Night's Dream. That one wasn't as funny as 10 Things but it had some good moments here and there and is definitely a time capsule of the late 90's/early 2000's high school life in so many ways.
I had forgotten there were so many actors in this who went on to bigger things.

The towers, where the main classroom is, are 4 stories above ground plus a basement. Most of the school is 3 stories with an auditorium in the middle, above the lunch room. There were 2000 students there the year I graduated in 1999, my graduating class was over 445 people. The movie was mostly filmed in Tacoma WA, not Seattle. The paintball and paddle boats were in Seattle. The band is Letters to Cleo. The main house was in Tacoma. One of my classmates houses was used for the filming. The two guys with the fedoras and cigarettes were best friends, Brad and Brian.
The parking lot was only for teachers in real life. And there was a fence around the bowl so stuff like that couldn't happen. Lol Those steps in the Stadium bowl are so steep and there's no rails in most of the bowl so it's kinda nerve-wracking to watch him dance around.
If you haven't seen Clueless, Whip It!, Stick It!, Empire Records, For a Good Time, Call, Can't Hardly Wait, Idle Hands... are all highly recommended high school/teen movies.
