    Hey! Love your tutorials!
    I'm moving from FCPX to Resolve. Cloud collab between editor/director (me) and colourist (remote) is one of the big reasons.
    Our projects are multi-cam shoots and have huge media pools (15TB to 25TB is common - 5 or 6 cameras shooting 4 or 5 days in ArriRAW UHD for example).
    I don't want to work off a NAS, I need a fast RAID directly attached for my multicam to work well - and the colourist def doesn't want to be from a remote server over the 'net.
    BM (in their own demo video) suggests you share footage on a DropBox, but uploading 20TB to DropBox would take days.
    We've tried just using our own copies of the media on local drives, it didn't work - each user had to relink media and that unlinked the other user when they did so.
    This turned out to because our file paths were different (and they always will be as your home folder will be your own name, on a Mac at least) it just doesn't work.
    Eventually we figured out how to make it work by using the file path settings in project management to point Resolve to the media drive via each users' unique file path.
    (You need any folder structure beyond that to be the same, so best for all to work off mirrored clones of the master drive).
    The file-path settings menu is pretty niche and I can't find much about it, beyond a single page in the manual...
    And this seems like a crucial step in utilising the Cloud sharing - after all, isn't the point not having to serve the media but only the project?
    This must be a common situation... once shooting is done the media won't change, so no need for syncing, just take home your own copy.
    This difficulty in linking the Media Pool between users feels like a major obstacle on Cloud collaboration working as people might imagine it would.
    It can be fixed but only by using some niche PM settings.
    Would you consider a deeper dive in to how to use Cloud project sharing when each user has their own, local copy of the project media?
    What do you think?
    Thanks!
    Tim (www.timvansomeren.com)

      hi Tim - just wondering if (7 months later) you landed on a reasonable workflow? you described the most likely situation in my mind re cloned drives going to different places... but cloud collaboration could (is?) be amazing in many respects...

      @@coreyhendrickson
      Hi Corey. The Cloud in BM is great
      Here are the ways I use it:
      - For small data projects (less than 500GB ish) I put all media in a Dropbox.
      Each user can set a file path in the project settings to their own dropbox and then media will stay in sync.
      I do this for personal projects as well as multi-user as it means I can work off my desktop or laptop and always have the latest version.
      I also set my Cache, Optimised Media and Proxy Media to be in the DropBox so this all stays sync'ed as well.
      Be warned, you can't open a local version if you are off-line. So don't think you can open it on a plane for example. You can easily move the project to a local drive if you want to work off-line. Just do this before you need it!
      - For large data projects (more than 500GB - any size where int would be impractical to upload media to the cloud) we make clone drives of initial source media after the shoot and physically give one to each user. In the cloud project we use file paths to navigate to our own drive's top level folder, then the rest will match between users as your drives are cloned and will work for everyone.
      I then use Dropbox for new media that comes in after the edit has begun. So if GFX, or credits, or new audio mixes, or any smaller updated media is added, put this in the dropbox so all users have it and they will see the new media when they open on their machine.
      An alternate way is for all users but one to use proxies.
      This is because you can work in proxies even if you don't have the camera originals. As long as you select "prefer proxies" in the playback menu, it works fine.
      So, one user (the colourist usually) gets the master drive with the Raw footage.
      They make proxies and set the Dropbox as the proxy location.
      Then others can work on proxies only with no real drawbacks (apart from resolution, but ProRes Proxy, for example, looks great).

      @@timvs you are generous to share in such detail - thank you! is there a reason you chose cloud over NAS?

    • @timvs
      @timvs Рік тому +2

      @@coreyhendrickson
      No problem.
      With your NAS v Cloud question:
      The main reason BlackMagic Cloud works for me is because each user keeps their Source Media LOCALLY.
      The *project* is kept in the cloud on BlackMagic's servers, but actual *media* does NOT have to stream from a remote server, you already have it on or physically attached to your editing computer.
      The first principle of this working in a multi-user set-up is that each user needs EXACTLY the SAME media so that the SHARED PROJECT works for everyone.
      The easiest way to achieve this duplicated source media is with a service that sync's a every user's local storage folder - and this is exactly what DropBox does - so it's the easiest way to have matching LOCAL storage with another user.
      A NAS is storage that is not local to you (unless you are the owner of the physical NAS drive).
      If a remote user is linking to a NAS via the internet, then they are now streaming footage for their edit over the 'net (rather than from a local drive) and that slows things down - exactly what I (personally) don't want with my multi camera editing.
      So a NAS would only be useful if it was a source for syncing my local drive with another user's local drive.
      And we have DropBox so why bother with a NAS?
      Does that make sense?

    Logically it’s impossible for two or more people to edit on one timeline, that would cause all worlds of hurt, since on edit might split and move two clips while someone else moves that clip to another space and trim it - so locking a timeline is logical.
    Where this collab tool is powerfull is with cross disipline collabs, so one person is editing on one timeline, another is editing on another timeline/segment (not sure if this is possible now, but it should work), while another person is grading, since grading is actually not changing the original clip, grading just adds «commands» to a clip, a receipe for how to alter the pixel values at render time, and another could work on sound - so several people working on different aspects of a project is what this is for. Of course, you would never work on editing a timeline while someone else adds audio effects, since clip position and sound effect needs to match, but editing/mastering the audio tracks (like compressor, eq, effects etc) doesn’t alter the audio clips, and is not dependent on knowing where in the timeline they are, and same with color grade, it’s not dependent on video clip position in timeline is.
    Same thing with fusion, making a fusion clip is independent on where on the timeline the clip is, so an editor might move it around while someone is adding text effects to a clip and it should not cause problems.

      In this case, they could both share the same network storage in the building. If they were "across state lines", they would set up a shared DropBox folder (online) and point their copies of Resolve to their own respective DropBox local folders. Blackmagic Cloud syncs the project, it does not sync the media.

    Having set up and used the local project database server for some projects now I can say it's invaluable once you have multiple people on the same project. It's not that hard to use but if you have a large network, aka more than one subnet, it quickly becomes cumbersome to manage. Not sure why but in 17 they wrote the database code to not be allowed to go across subnets by default. Had to have a super nerd friend do some crazy code editing to fix that.
    They did update the project server with Resolve 18 but for $5 per project database, and you don't have to manage that internally, it's a no brainer to go with the Blackmagic managed cloud solution. That also means you can work anywhere instead of just on site where the server is. At least without network VPN trickery. As long as you have a local copy of the source files. We use a NAS on site so content is central for editors.
    You added the comment in the video but there's basically two ways to work with shared projects. One is simply the project is shared and up to date without any version conflicts. Person A works on something, closes the project, person B picks up where A left off. That alone, without the potential for version conflicts (like with Drive or Dropbox timeline sharing) is great. A second person can open the same project at the same time but in read only mode.
    The next step is what you found part way through, multiple user collaboration. Now you both can have the same project open at the same time, you just can't edit the same timeline at the same time. One can edit, while another colors the same timeline, but otherwise you're on different timelines to be most effective. Or different tabs, one starts a rough edit while another works on Fusion graphics, ingests and organizes media, stuff like that.
    Ideally you would break things down further than one timeline. Person A works on an intro, B works on an interview, C works on B roll, stuff like that. Now you are all in the same project at the same time, but without competing for who is controlling timelines. For a short video, or a simple edit, that may not make sense. But for a large show with lots of parts, then it's amazing.

      does the new project server still only work with the same subnet?

    • @RichBelgieJr
      @RichBelgieJr 2 роки тому

      @@MoTheFcker Honestly I don't know. They make that feature for big production houses that need the security of having everything local. Big companies may not allow any cloud syncing to help with corporate theft. I don't have to worry about that, ha ha. Testing the cloud feature to not need the local project server anymore.
      If you know how to edit PostGre SQL databases, then you can edit the permissions and have project server work across an entire network with multiple subnets. I watched my buddy make it work and I got very lost very fast lol. But if you know that stuff, it's probably not that hard.

    I think the big difference between what was done here, and what they did in the demo is the two of you used mirrored content in two locations, and they use a server with a shared single content source. With mirrored content I believe one person would have to be the project owner/manager and the other are limited collaborators in order to decide who has the right to alter and remove things from the project, because otherwise it could lead to accidental file mismatches or worse remote project hijackers.

    Hey, im from Argentina, this feature is not active for my country yet, but i have a question since i recorded a documentary (tons and tons of GB of material). The question is: if my partner has a copy of all the files in his hard disk, can he "link" the media? or is a MUST to have all the files in the cloud? thanks and suscribed!

    Thanks! That was great to see. It's awesome and great it's also available in the free version. It might be also great for a quick feedback process:Just showing client or collaboration partner how a certain grade would look like and he/she can instantly feedback to you from a remote place or perhaps give it a try himself. Also great for training purposes? You as a teacher can watch what the student is doing and intervene like a "driving instructor". I imagine it can speed up things a lot. Will be nevertheless waiting a bit for a version when it's a little "less beta".

    I bought a new notebook recently, with Windows 11 installed. Microsoft interoduced a facility, Windows Subsystem for Linux - WSL - to allow users to run ext-based Linux distibutions under Windows. On Windows 11, thi feature is enhanced and I can nor wun graphics apoplications too. Not only that, but if I unstall an application on Linux, it can appear in the Windows menus and runs on the Windows desktop.
    The big question, how well does the Linux version of daVinci Resolve work in this environment?

    What I kinda want to know is how you can send an edit to someone for coloring with proxies (like with the Cloud Store storage with proxies auto-generated). Can they grade on the proxies instead of having to download the originals? Would it be hard to grade since they wouldn't be the data-rich files? The grades would probably obviously copy over to the originals when re-linked, but... idk... that's my main question.

    My primary concern would be sitting all my media up in their cloud. I would rather copy all my media files to my collaborators via some other means (email, Google Drive, or just mailing a hard drive), store those files directly on MY OWN computer, then just have the project file (the data about the edits made) up on their cloud. That way I have immediate access to my files, no third party ever sees my files, and only the small amount of metadata about the edits has to go back and forth over the internet.
    Please see if this is possible. Thanks.

    • @EasyyokeFilms
      @EasyyokeFilms 2 роки тому

      Your media does not sit in their cloud. You can use any means like google drive, Dropbox, we transfer etc to send your media and all your collaborator has to do is to copy the files locally to his system and then relink them. Media is not in the cloud

    9 months on, you're probably a guru on the cloud collaboration lol I see you guys discovered that the collaboration can happen using the free version of DR. So my question is, can one editor with the free version gain access to the timeline of the other editor with the Studio version in order to do some edits that are only limited to the Studio version? If that's not possible, then it forces both editors to have the studio version right? 🤔

    • @CaseyFaris
      @CaseyFaris  2 роки тому

      Yep you can, if there are studio features, they will be disabled or watermarked on the free system

      @@CaseyFaris Awesome! Thanks Casey. One final thing, not sure if you mentioned it in your video here, but for Sam to be able to edit stuff on the same timeline, did he have to have the source files(original media) on his own system for it to work or was he just able to remotely edit on the timeline based on the source files being available at your end concurrently?
      I am wondering how easy the collaboration process would be if it so happens another collaborator has to have the original source media before being able to edit simultaneously (which is what I'm thinking might be the case). ... if the files are huge (say 3TB), it means one has to find a way to transfer those huge files over to the collaborator first right? HOPE my question makes sense :)

    How much is it to use. I know davinci resolve is free and studio is around 300, but I saw that you have to pay five bucks a month I believe per project you create in the cloud. Is that correct? Is there a better solution to that.

    • @CaseyFaris
      @CaseyFaris  2 роки тому +1

      It’s not per project, it’s per library. That is like your folder of projects. You can have tons of projects in one library. Like you can have 10 people collabing on 100 projects for 5dollars total per month.
