      You have to have an active internet connection to work with cloud projects - if you lose connection it'll lock you out. But once it's loaded speed and performance is the same as a local project

    I've used DR since v15 and I don't think anyone could complain about the product BMD puts out there for us to use, even for free if you want. When Cloud was added I thought about adding it to my work flow but I didn't really have a good use case for it compared to the "nonCloud" way. Im now reconsidering it, but this video told me all I needed to know before even watching it. If it takes over half an hour to explain what it is and what it does it's likely not worth the time to implement for a solo editor, even on multiple locations.

    • @vp-land
      @vp-land  4 місяці тому +1

      Yeah it's more for collaboration. If you're solo the only potential benefits would be cloud backups, work from multiple computers (if you do that), and tapping into camera to cloud (if you shoot on any BMD cams/apps)

    Great and very useful workflow explanation!
    I have a similar Wishlist, especially for managing which original files to sync, to which groups (colorists, editors, etc) and a few more.
    My current setup is using Blackmagic Cloud for the Project collaboration and only syncing Proxies, and in parallel using a NAS + Dropbox to keep all original media synced (I have 10+ TB of active project data, this way I have more control over the local storage - using QNAP NAS which is also in a Automatic Backup workflow). Of course, all people have to be aware of the process.

    Thank you so much for the detailed explanation re: which machines are best set to "sync proxies only" and which need to be set to "sync originals and proxies". A bit counter-intuitive for me until seeing this video. I agree that enabling remote collaboration and having a robust option outside of Adobe ecosystem is a game changer. Feels like back in mid-2000s when I learned about Offline Editor / Online Editor except NOW we could have that ratio as something like 20:1 if enough collaborators needed. Thank you!

    Hi Joey! Thank you so much for putting this great tutorial together! I'm trying out BM cloud and it is amazing and with help from your tutorial, I'm pretty much up and running. I did have a question and if you happen to see this, I'd be grateful to hear your thoughts. I set up my main computer to upload only proxies and then I set up my collaborator computer to upload both proxies and originals. Then, on the collaborator computer, I imported a short video file. It was able to create the proxy and sync both the proxy and original to the cloud. I can see both files when I browse my online cloud folders on the BM cloud website. However, on my main computer, it appears that only the proxy downloaded. I can't find the original at all. Any thoughts of what I've done wrong here? Thanks again, Joey! This is a great video!

    Awesome video! Thank for explaining all this stuff. It's exactly what I was looking for. I am still a bit fuzzy on something though: My workflow will be a bit different from yours. I want to shoot a documentary on iPhones using Prores HQ raw and shoot in log. With multiple cameras shooting, I will be getting a lot of footage. Ideally (and I'm hoping I can use the Blackmagic Cloud Storage option to help) I'd like to have the iPhone cameras upload the raw footage to its server as I'm shooting (saving me from having to get external drives for the iPhone cameras), and have the Blackmagic server basically dump all that footage to my Editor's main computer's external hard drive in the background -- not as proxies but as the full raw footage. I'm pretty sure from your video I can do this. The question though, is I assume by uploading the footage, it is automatically being stored as a backup on the cloud? As I said I'm going to have a ton of footage and I will have it all on a drive attached to my editor's computer. I dont need backups (and I'd prefer to save money by not paying for terabytes of needless storage space). Is there an option that allows the system to automatically purge the master footage from its cloud drives after it has confirmed the computer has downloaded it? (And when you mentioned in the video you'd like more control over the syncing process cause its doesn't always send all the footage properly, I got a bit concerned. All I need is for the cloud server to assume it synced my footage, erase the originals then I discover I dont have my dailies.

    • @vp-land
      @vp-land  2 місяці тому

      Thanks!
      Basically when the camera is connected to the cloud it will upload the media to cloud storage, then automatically download it to whatever computers are connected to that project (and have the project open) to the local storage you designated - so could be an external hard drive
      But there's nothing in the workflow that will auto delete media. So you're still going to have the media on the phones (probably want to use external drive on the phones) and in the cloud until manually deleted.

    The information given at 06:36 about Cloud Storage including a Project Library, is incorrect. I have just purchased 500GB Cloud Storage for one of my "Organizations" and it did NOT give us a Project Library. £7.80 wasted as we do not need the cloud storage but thought it'd be worth having for the small £2.40 difference vs just paying for a Project Library on its own.

    • @AZzackP
      @AZzackP 3 місяці тому

      I just retrieve the originals manually from the bmd cloud website and relink originals in resolve once I download everything and get it moved to my local storage. It’s usually not much in terms of originals coming back from remote editors, but a pain you can only download files one by one. There’s no way syncing originals from main computer is gonna work. That would be hundreds of GB’s and would max out the cloud storage in seconds.

    • @alexrednaxela3149
      @alexrednaxela3149 3 місяці тому

      @@AZzackPThanks for the reply, it makes no sense that there is no option to "download originals only" for this workflow. I'm just going to run it through a local file share on Google drive for now because I get lots and lots of original clips from the editors, we do documentaries and they always add tonnes of internet and archive footage, would be way too inefficient to download them off the cloud directly

    You said Davinci does a good Job remembering where the media is stored in each persons computer. I don’t find that to be the case. If an editor re-links media to where it is on their computer, I have to re-link on my computer. This goes for original and proxy. Is there another wait to link media that does not impact all the users?

    Here's an actual pipe dream. Now that davinci has a cloud workflow, I would actually love to see a web based version of resolve. Kinda like those other cloud editing solutions you talked about.
    This web based version of resolve can connect to the existing cloud project you have, etc.
    One of the things I find limiting me quite a bit is accessing my editing device. I wish I could edit from anywhere on a non powerful laptop on a web browser.
    I think resolve can be a company to do this as well. They'd basically dominate the industry at that point

      Cloud based editing via web interface is extremely expensive. to implement. the hosting solution for that using AWS or Azure or even GCP is an expensive running cost. they will also need new and great Devops and cloud engineer which are not cheap to create a CI/CD pipeline. so when it then come down to the cost for using the platform as an end user BMD will be banking on there been an extremely large user base requiring it in order to re coupe the cost of the CI/CD deployment. a small user base is not worth it.
      If they can pull it off an keep the cost down. I will most likely never buy another GPU. High end CPU might save me on System build and upgrade.
