  • In the golf swing you are not moving weight, you are transferring force. If you try to shift weight you will tend to sway. So it is not a weight shift, it is a force transfer. On my backswing I move force into the trail heel. Then as I change directions, force goes into my lead foot, towards the ball of the foot. As I swing through the ball my force in my lead foot goes to the lead heel.

Since finding your golf channel I have unsubscribed from all other golf channels… the concept on not dragging the handle has blown my mind and made my golf swing so sweet. I was averaging 101-105 scores and I was so frustrated because I actually have a decent swing. Your channel has helped me. Shot a 91 the other day almost was a 88 but I had to 3 putt 😞. With more reps and continuing to view your videos I’ll be in the low 80’s in no time . Thanks man really enjoy this channel 💯

I like to feel like I'm setting myself up to "apply the brakes". On my backswing, I'll have just enough pressure into the ground with my right foot, that it feels like I'm simply restricting all of my weight going too far to that side. Same is true in transition... I'll drift slightly left to where I can "apply the brakes" with my left leg, and properly extend my left side. Imagine trying to drive a huge nail into a wall, at about shin level. You would naturally "apply the brakes" with your right side on the way back, then do the same with your left side into the nail.

So just the swinging of the arms and shoulders creates the weight transfer?

What kool aid have you been drinking? The fact is you must get your weight into your right hip joint! YOU don't think a tennis player shifts his weight to serve the ball? YOU don't think a pitcher shifts his weight to deliver the pitch to the catcher? you don't think batters in the box don't shift their weight ?>>>Cmom Mike, no one stands flat footed and hits with that much force! Read Hogan's book page 90 "lateral motion"!

I feel like you spent too much time going over what was wrong, and too little time describing the correct way. Just my 2 cents.

But how do you get pressure into lead leg. I feel it and not sway to back swing but what motion will get pressure into lead side?

Thank God someone stood up to explain that there is no boady shift in a golf swing most golf teachers need to watch this video so they can learn to explain this properly

Such a subtle but important distinction, force not weight. Thanks

I struggled with this all year. Only been a week or so but it has made my contact so much more consistent and crisp.

Good Job Mike! Golf is a rotational weight transfer to the back and then to the front. The percentage of transfer is entirely up to the golfer. There is not supposed to be any "sway" involved. I totally agree with your presentation!!! Keep up the good work!!!

I agree, unless you want to swing like Mike Austin. He shifted all his weight with his old-school compound pivot. I gota say it's pretty damn powerful. I had a 4i hybrid fly 250 yards with the wind the other day and it was effortless. Not bad for a 40 year old with back injuries.

I like to feel that pressure develops in my front foot before the downswing is fully unleashed. No lurching around of the body. If I had to say, I'd point to the lower body as being the root source of this pressure shift.

What are you feeling though? I’m brand new and can’t figure out pressure. I go back to back swing I don’t sway. But how do I get pressure on front foot?

Wasn't the "classic" swing more of a weight "shift"?
The motion Mike does on the first example is very similar to Mike Austin's compound pivot.

I don't know, sure there is not supposed to be any sway to the right, but the pros seem to move a lot to the lead side in the downswing. Otherwise, the low point won't come after the ball, right?

Well said ! I suffered for years of mis-teaching of weight shift and positionitis. You and Todd from Wasatch have made the swing easy to understand and deploy. Thank you..

When you sway the low point of your swing moves. When the low point moves how do you ever get back to the ball?

I wish to better understand this important principle and ask, what is 'force' as it relates to your demonstration of, 'force in the right foot and transfer force to the left foot'. What is the feeling of using force? Is it pushing the foot (right foot) into the ground and transferring the stored energy on the right side to applying force (left foot) into the ground using the body (legs, hips, torso, and upper body) in the transfer force back into the ground during the swing?

Very good, as per usual Mike. Have you watched any of the 'Zen' golf channel from UK? All about shifting ground forces rather than weight.

I have been watching it but find they don't explain it very well, they have peeps on there different boards which I'm sure helps but malaska talks to the viewer and not some in a lesson... Very easy to get lost with zen
