    I genuinely don't get why Rare's CEO wants us to believe they care about stagnancy when for years they've done nothing but make microtransaction fodder cosmetics for Sea of Thieves. If they made an actual game in between the content milling, that would be one thing, but apparently overpriced ship cosmetics in a game you have to pay upfront for allows you to be successful enough that you don't need to bother, so who cares if it creates a hole in the logic of Rare's excuses?

Should there be a Banjo-Kazooie 4 set after Nuts & Bolts, he would be too old and out of shape for another adventure, meaning that a new hero will have to take his place while Banjo sits out in the sidelines.

    The conventional wisdom around 2010-2016, when a lot of us were hoping to see Crash and Spyro return, was that these games were "relics of the past that no one wants in current year." They would sell poorly supposedly.
    And then the Crash remakes sold something like 15 million copies and Spyro sold like 10 million.
    I think both numbers are several times higher than those franchises peak from back in the day.

    • @theyakkoman
      @theyakkoman 3 місяці тому +5

      "I think both numbers are several times higher than those franchises peak from back in the day."
      If that statement is true, I think there's a kind of sweet and reasonable explanation for it.
      Not every kid had their own N64/Playstation/Dreamcast growing up, nor a SNES/Megadrive (Genesis for Americans), or Gamceube/PS2/Xbox. Maybe they had one of the consoles, but more than likely not the other.
      And since these games are exclusives, you can only get as many people (often parents) buying for example Banjo or Spyro as own a N64/Playstation.
      BUT kids tend to have friends.
      You didn't have an N64, but your best friend did. And they had Banjo-Kazooie.
      So even if you didn't own it, you played it.
      And more than likely, you didn't just have one good friend, and neither did your bestie.
      On that one single copy of B-K, perhaps 3-4 kids grew up playing it at their house (and they also grew up playing Crash at your Playstation house or Sonic at another friends SEGA house etc.).
      So there are more Banjo/Crash/Spyro/Sonic/Mario/etc. fans than they are owners.
      And when these now get re-released, these kids, now adults, go "Oh! I loved this game as a kid. Now I can get my own copy!"
      And so, they do.

    Dude, regarding the merch. Theres been a fuckton of Banjo-Kazooie merch that's been coming out since 2018. The First4Figures statues being some of it (the Banjo-Kazooie in a flying pose, Grunty, Mumbo, The 5 jinjo colors from the first game, crocodile Banjo, Walrus Banjo, Bee Banjo, Termite Banjo, Pumpkin Banjo and a statue of Banjo and Kazooie playing a banjo with Bottles), not to mention all the merch that has been sold on Fangamer over the last several years including hoodies, shirts, record sets, pins, stuffed animals, puzzles, keychains, hats etc. AND the several figures that have released by different comanies including the Amiibo from Nintendo, as well as the figures by Premium DNA Toys, YouTooz, Totaku and the two Pop figures that were recently released as well.
    The huge flow of Banjo-Kazooie merch started in 2018 when the flying pose Banjo-Kazooie statue from First4Figures was announced (I know this becase I preordered it in July that year). I knew then, that something was happening as there has been NOTHING merchandise-wise that has been released for Banjo-Kazooie since its original game came out. I was right......Banjo was annouced for smash the following year.
    What I'm saying is, all this merch is nothing new. They've been milking the franchise merch-wise for the last 6 years, with no actual game in sight.

    British person here, a lot of the supposed "Banjo-bashing" humor you're pointing to is just self-deprecating British humor. "Laughing at" is percieved in the UK to be the same as "laughing with", a similar situation would be The Beano and The Dandy, two children's comics by the same company where a running gag in both was characters being tormented or punished by reading or going to the world of the other comic (at least before the Dandy was discontinued and had its most popular strips folded into the Beano), but it obviously doesn't translate well overseas - the N64, and consequentally Banjo, aren't very popular over here so it's practically inevitable that these cultural clashes would happen, somewhat resembles Sonic's lack of popularity in Japan

    I genuinely think this boils down to two factors:
    1. The only people who want Banjo-Kazooie to come back are Nintendo fans, and they are not the kind of people who will go out and buy an Xbox JUST for Banjo, they'd want it to be a multiplatform title on the Switch. It's like going to Burger King and asking for a Whopper, but demanding they deliver it to you while you wait at McDonalds.
    2. Banjo is honestly more valuable to Rare dead than alive, they won't give us a new game but they sell MOUNTAINS of nostalgia-bait merch through Fangamer and First4Figures. It always feels like Banjo is always JUST about to be forgotten for good, and that just MAYBE if you vote with your wallet and buy enough merch, Rare will finally give them a new game! Disney has mastered this way of leveraging merch sales through artificial scarcity through the characters of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit and Figment. If Banjo is relevant, then there's no nostalgia to sell his merch, he's just another current franchise.

    Gotta say, I do agree with Craig Duncan there - there's no malice towards Banjo in his wording. I've mentioned it before, but that's exactly what happened with the first Yooka-Laylee. I liked it just fine, but the general reception was pretty mixed, despite it doing a lot of what fans had wanted (barring any technical issues, etc). If there were to be a new Banjo, I really want it to do something new to justify its existence - no remaster of a game that's more than playable now. Something familiar, akin to the original game + Tooie, but something different.
    I'll also repeat it here, but Rare has never stuck to one franchise for very long. Historically, they usually make one game, maybe a sequel, then move onto something else. If you want to hear Duncan in a more positive context, I urge you to listen to his interview with DK Vine from a few years back. You'll also hear that his favourite DK game is Donkey Konga, so y'know.... everyone's a little weird.

The charm in the dialoague wasnt there, npcs placement felt random and unimpactful, the abilities outside or roll were not fun or interesting. The game lacked a soul. • @Shamanized
      @Shamanized 6 місяців тому +5

      Yeah this is missing a few things, one is YL didn't deliver on a product as high quality as BK/BT. If it was released in 2000, it would have been an alright game but easily forgotten. So it hasn't really been proven that people don't want a solid open-world 3d platformer like BK was, because we haven't really gotten a solid one except for maybe Hat in Time, but that has its own issues and despite those issues has enjoyed quite a lot of success.
      I do agree that I'd love to see a proper BK platformer return and have evolved to some degree. I wouldn't want it to evolve as much as Breath of the Wild for Zelda because that's a totally different game, but I would like a BK game to come back and nail what used to do while expanding on it with modern gameplay stuff that we love. Some people think BK reached the peak of 3D platformers but this is a lack of imagination, it was only scratching the surface of what an adventure platformer can really be.

    • @TheUltimegaMan
      @TheUltimegaMan 3 місяці тому +1

      YL’s world were way too big, they should have been much more segmented and separated out. It was a good game, but a lot of its problems was in its pacing and aimlessness, for BK those worlds were very compact and separated, which makes it fun to go and explore because you have a lot to do in a smaller world, but it’s also focused. A lot of YK size was just physical space, it didn’t add to the gameplay, which made it a slog at parts and hard for collectors to get everything. Even the YL “sequel” knew that which is what made that a better overall game, because it was focused and precise (but not exactly what I wanted). I just wish they learned their lesson and made a true sequel to YL that was much more compact and filled with secrets and mystery to it, but we’ll see.

      And as to the other Banjo games on gameboy; many haven't played because many don't even know those exist, because they were never heavily marketed or produced games.
      Grunty's Revenge is one of the best Gameboy Advance games imo, purely because of how well it managed to translate nearly every feature of the 3D version into an isometric top down platformer.
      Banjo Pilot is another example of banjo being misplaced. It's a fine mario kart copy, nothing wrong with it for casual players. However it had no business using Banjo's IP, and it was also never successful because Mario Kart already existed on every nintendo platform.

    Great vid dude. As someone who thinks of Banjo Kazooie near every day and has a daughter who pretends to be Tooty while I am Gruntilda at the playground this was something I bandied about for years. Now it seems plain.
    Banjo Kazooie was hoppin and boppin in '98. Despite being a project that was originally Dream, the enthusiasm and manic heart beat of the game is impossible to ignore. To this day, I've never seen a game as charming as the original.
    By 2000 the tone had shifted completely to a grim pall hanging over a precipice. The worlds reflected a coming to terms with life as a new senex. Grunty kills Bottles at the start, we have worlds like Jolly Roger's Lagoon a maturation of Treasure Trove Cove with ale drinking, a wildly perverse chalkboard menu, and an interesting relationship between Jolly and Merry Maggie. Also Grunty Industries is about as gross and fed up one could seem about life in perpetual rain in a sludgy factory.
    Fast forward to Nuts n Bolts which was reworked from being Banjo Threeie and the tone is deafeningly self deprecating throughout furthered by ample examples hearkening back to the original games. Banjoland exists and despite being a decent romp, it shows how done they were with the bear n bird. Throw in Conker's Bad Fur Day as an overt bashing of the genre as a cherry on top.
    Ill never rule out the idea but the blatant tonal shift over the trilogy as it stands is telling. Where would a potential Threeie land in tone? Do they pick up after Nuts N Bolts? Are Banjo and Kazooie now coaches for new Rare IP spiritual successor not YL? Ideally the Mayles would work on it together. It would only be right. Oh and Kirkhope on the tunes. That's a must

    • @muscleman125
      @muscleman125 3 місяці тому +1

      I think if a third, true sequel was made, it would likely take up the lighthearted tone of the original game. Tooie wasn't all drab either, it was trying to be more epic, and part of an epic is mature themes. It was trying to grow up with it's audience, too.
      A third sequel would probably have Banjo and Kazooie looking like they do in Smash Ultimate. I reckon the graphics would be colorful, bright, and cutesy/squishy. It would lean in heavily on the nostalgia.
      Kirkhope would 100% be the composer, there is literally no one else in the world who can properly compose a banjo kazooie soundtrack, at least not while he's still making music. (There are a bunch of people who make fan music in the style of the Banjo games and it is great, but Kirkhope is the only man for the real deal)

    • @tophario1492
      @tophario1492 3 місяці тому

      @@muscleman125 good point on Tooie not being all drab. It's not as bouncy as its predecessor, but that would have felt a bit bland. Thankfully we got Tooie which offered a great veering off from the "traditional formula" (sure one game but throw titles like SM64 in this too. Interconnected 3d metroidvania hadn't been attempted at this point and Tooie does it with personality and panache in spades!) and curiously enough it came out the same year as Majora's Mask which did the same thing for its series. Such mesmerizing adventures they are.
      You're likely right in tone there. Maybe early game has some nostalgic leanings with Easter eggs sprinkled throughout.
      It'd be neat if it's a natural growth from Tooie but I'd be surprised if that's the case. If they can pull together the core best they can and go avant garde Banjo as they did with Tooie then I'm a happy camper.
      Of the fan musicians I've seen PoopPoopfart (ppf) or Nico Mendoza would be great candidates to potentially work with Kirkhope on the project. In honor of the Rare "barns" feel of endless creativity though it may indeed be best if we let Kirkhope loose to dazzle us again

    Here's the problem: Even updated and bundled together, are Kazooie and Tooie worth a full $60 price point? I'd buy it, but would it sell well? How would people react to, say, $40? Remember they'd have to compete with Switch N64 and Rare Replay, after all. I feel like the kids would scoff at even $40 for two "old" games that they can get elsewhere for much cheaper.
    So this has everything to do with the market. Which I find a little vexxing - is Sea of Thieves _really_ raking in that much dough? It was Day 1 on GamePass. How many copies did it actually sell? Was it really significantly more than Banjo Remasters would?
    I hate the "free market" for a thousand good reasons (🚩), but maybe one of the more personal reasons is because it stifles art and shunts creativity primarily into pipelines dictated by profit. Minority opinions like the very vocal Banjo fandom's are usually not catered to by studios of a certain size. Alas

    Honestly, as much as I'd love a new true BK game, I get why Rare and Microsoft would be reluctant to make one. With the general consensus in the industry that big collectathon 3D platformers are an unprofitable relic (Mario Odyssey being a major exception), the fact that many of the key devs from the original games left the company decades ago, and when those devs themselves tried to do what was essentially a new BK game it underperformed critically, commercially and with fans, and the seemingly massive disagreements within the fan base about whether Tooie was an improvement or a bloated mess meaning that there's no consensus of what fans even want a new BK game to be like... And then you factor in that even critical darlings won't save your studio if they aren't obscenely profitable if you work for Xbox, who would take the risk? The guys who spent the past 15 years churning out Wii Sports clones to get in on the motion control fad and then settling on a "live service" game that's giving them consistent returns? You can never truly recapture what makes a game great when you remake it unless it was bad from the start and you wanted to give it a second chance.
    Now if they made a third Banjo-Kazooie game I would be all for it. But I would never want to see Banjo Kazooie or Tooie truly remade from the ground up. There's so much charm in the low poly count of an N64 game and the oversaturated colors that just doesn't translate as well when it's remade. The closest we got to it being like spot on was the Spyro remake but even then I preferred the lower poly count.

    Playtonic Games should be the ones who make Banjo Kazooie 3.
    They were the ones who made the original 2 because Playtonic Games WAS the developer RARE back in the 1990s.
    Technically RAREWARE was 4 to 5 different RARE teams developing separate games back in the day.
    Thus is the reason why Banjo Team and Conker Team had that rivalry, while Handheld team did their thing.
    One special RAREWARE team was Team DKR who then made Jet Force Gemini, Dinosaur Planet, Kameo with a mixture of team members moving around to help out other RARE teams on other games.
    Team Goldeneye started making Perfect Dark but left when the game was half finished, ended up being completed by Team Killer Instinct who were already in the process of KI3 before having to cancel that project to save Perfect Dark.

    The Rare that operates under Microsoft is not the same Rare we used to know. They may hold the IPs and ideas; but they don't use them in a way that one would expect. Sure, they released Rare-Replay, giving us access to a lot of the classics; and even released some of Rare's classics on the Switch Online. But, there is a clear dividing line between the than, and now. And I think Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts, is the moment they began to resent the series.
    Banjo-Kazooie and Tooie perfected the 3D Platformer. And around the time Nuts and Bolts was greenlit; the 3D Platformer was basically gone. So they attempted to steer Banjo in a new direction; hoping to get praise while keeping fans interested. What they got instead, was harsh negative kickback over how radically different it was from the originals. And I personally think; that is when Rare decided Banjo was dead. The same thing happened with Conker; when he was placed in Project Spark. People liked it, but not as much as a new game; and then Young Conker got so much backlash, that they outright cancelled it.
    When you see how painfully average Viva Pinata and Sea of Thieves did; I think it's clear that Rare looks back at their older IPs with a sense of jealousy and bitterness. All their old IPs are beloved and still enjoyed; despite being so simple. But their newer attempts to branch out and try new things; always fall flat on their face, and they can't seem to figure out why.

Banjo-Kazooie borrowed the formula from Super Mario 64 and Odyssey borrowed the level structure of Banjo-Kazooie--miniature sandboxes you explore with a ton of collectables that don't throw you out of the level, and transformations into creatures to explore specific areas of the terrain.

    I would love a mixture of both games. Things I want from kazooie is the charm and the ability to fully complete levels without extensive backtracking through levels. Things I want from Tooie is the bigger levels and quest to obtain jiggies. Best of both worlds for me

    Idk to be honest like many others here in the comments i find Rare's reasoning for not wanting to do another Banjo Kazooie game to be kinda hypocritical when consider A: they seem to be okay with pouring tons of microtransactions in Sea of Thieves and B: heavily referencing Banjo and Kazooie in their past products plus also the merchandise that keeps coming out they approved. You'd think that after Banjo's return to Smash Ultimate was met with universal praise that they would've tried to start developing a new game but after the sour taste that Nuts and Bolts left in my mouth i honestly think that they're just ashamed of this franchise.

    Tired of people blaming Microsoft for Rare. People conveniently forget that Star Fox Adventures was Rare and Grabbed by the Ghoulies was originally a Gamecube game. Rare has no one to blame for their decline in quality other than themselves.

      Star Fox Adventures was a result of executive meddling from Nintendo. Microsoft can't be blamed for that one, as such a move would ensure that Dinosaur Planet would never get moved to Xbox and potentially outsell The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker.

    Would love to see a new BK, but it would have to be done in a pretty specific way after Banjo Tooie, Nuts and Bolts, and Yooka Laylee have been handled. I like the idea of "BK but bigger and better", but that's what Tooie did and certain elements, like the massive worlds and constant tie ins to later worlds, didn't go too well. Every world in Tooie was massive and none could be completed on their own. There should be some smaller and more self contained worlds for us to have fun with too both to serve as tutorials and a breath of fresh air. There should also be tons of moves, all the ones from BK and most of the ones from Tooie would be great, but all the shoes and the necessity of the split pads could get annoying. A limited set of world-placed power ups would work well to that end and while I love the split abilities, a better way than the split pads would be nice, mostly because you could go to one pad, go to the other side of the level, and not be able to get your other half without walking back or dying. Dying worked well because you didn't have limited lives, but I like that YL has limited lives instead. Kazooie can fly so why not have a way for the pads themselves to be left out? Not sure how that would happen, but I'm not a game dev. Yooka Laylee tried to fix some of these issues, like having expanding worlds, less power ups, and from what I can tell, no world tie ins, but it introduced a litany of other issues. Expanding worlds, while novel, is annoying at best, and no world tie ins sucks. The power ups are traded for other things that are okay but I'm not going to get into it in a comment and have their own issues everywhere. There's also a lot of levels that are covered in places you can just fall and die. The first level is just filled with holes to nowhere and is lazy. The swamp is okay, but the amount of times I broke out of both levels onto random geometry CONSTANTLY. It's lazy and stupid. A new BK can't have that, all geometry you can get to should be intentional. No excuses. Everything else was okay so far in my playthrough, but the game isn't captivating at all so I've stopped playing multiple times for huge amounts of time because it's boring. A new BK shouldn't be like that either, even Nuts and Bolts was interesting enough to play through to the end of each of my several playthroughs. There are some quite good levels in YL like the winter one, but it's also frustrating to try getting everything in even that level and feels bad. All the other levels have similar issues so far too. Now, Nuts and Bolts tried to do something completely different and it fell flat on its face. A lot of people have been comparing Zelda TOTK to it, but TOTK seems to handle it way better, though I haven't played it yet cause life. The biggest difference appears to be that building vehicles and contraptions in TOTK assists the main gameplay loop of it and BOTW, where Nuts and Bolts throws platforming out the window completely. That sucks hard and while it could be interesting to put such a mechanic in a new BK, it'd be really difficult to do and most fans would still hate it. Had Nuts and Bolts given you the tools and parts to make contraptions that help you get to places, solve puzzles, or defeat bosses that give you jiggies in the world, they didn't and instead filled the game with bloated maps and dozens of challenges to complete that were total slogs. That's not to say it would be impossible to implement correctly, but it would make small and simple levels hard to do correctly anyways. Now there was a Trailer that went around one day about a new game with a "Toy maker" villain, which looked cool, but not having Grunty as the main villain would suck. It would be fine though if any new villains were there to help her. LOG sucked in every way though, so I won't mention him again. In Nuts and Bolts, they also did a big no-no and took away Spiral Mountain until the end of the game and then used it as the tiniest map you could play on. They didn't even include the Isle o' Hags or inside of Grunty's Lair so it was even harder to justify. A new BK should at least have Spiral Mountain to serve as the tutorial like Tooie and the first game, bonus points if there's an actual Isle o' Hags and Grunty's Lair that you can visit at least a small part of like what Tooie did for the Lair. As for everything else, bringing Gobi, Boggy's Family, Bottles family, Klungo, and most of the other lovely characters back would be best, even the Aliens from Tooie would be good. References to LOG's BS would be fun too, but he should be left out of the game. Maybe bring back Tootie somehow? Not sure what would be done with her, but it's possible. Tooie did the best job as a sequel by far, but there is a lot that could be good too even from the other two.
    TLDR: don't repeat the sins of the past, but there might be a few good things to bring in from past games.

    At this rate we will be lucky if Spyro 4 even comes out on the PS6 by people who actually are motivatedto make that happen. Much less get our hopes up for Microsoft to give us a Banjo reboot that's clearly a very low priority idea to them.

    Stop begging for this, it's not happening, and shouldn't happen if the original creatives aren't involved.

    Honestly, if I would have to choose ONE Banjo game to remake/remaster, I would say that Nuts and Bolts would be a prime candidate. WAIT! Don't hit me! Lemme explain!
    The game itself has an interesting concept behind it. You build vehicles out of parts you find, and can use a magic wrench to fix it/repair it and to attack on foot.
    The main complaint I (and many other people I've seen) is that it was **too** focused on vehicle mechanics, with little to no reason to run around on foot, or any "platforming only" sections. What's more, while the worlds were very large, allowing for all kinds of crazy builds, it was also very empty.
    You could build tanks, boats, even planes and rockets! But there would only be like two, or three enemies in the level that you could use those weapons on. Most of them were on the ground or the very few combat missions, which didn't really have any stakes involved, since you could just quick-fix your vehicle.
    The game itself felt complete on the building side, but the level building felt rushed, and neglected.
    If they do decide to bring back Banjo-Kazooie, I think they should consider remaking Nuts and Bolts, and try and do that game justice. It was such an interesting concept for an idea that suffered from either crunch time rush, or the hardware limitations of the Xbox 360. That game deserves a second chance, especially with how the Xbox One and series X really pushes what a console can do.
    If it were to come back, I would highly suggest they consider adding Jiggies that are only accessible on foot through platforming sections, and much more enemies to avoid/use a vehicle to beat in the open world missions.

    Why do you all want a sequel so bad anyway? I wouldn't want devs to make a game they wouldn't want to produce, else that I'll lead to a poor game. Besides, that last thing these studios need is to make another remaster/ sequel for nostalgia money.
