I watched dunkey stream this entire game, and I think my favorite line was probably "if you beat this as a kid, there was actually a gas leak in your house and you just thought you beat it."
DK64 feels almost like a fever dream to me. Something about the music seems so melancholic in a lot of areas and some areas are so quiet and have such uncanny music it actually creeps me out to this day as a 26 year old, and the game doesn't have any horror whatsoever. It's weirdly beautiful and scary and amazing.
Same, rewatching these scenes and hearing all the music and sound effects brought me right back to my living room in 2000, eerie feelings, very melancholic.
Played and beat it as a kid circa 2000. I agree, to this day especially the second world’s creepy atmosphere still gets me uncomfortable. I think it’s the Aztec influence and it overall feeling so empty, like the people who built it also disappeared. Same with the Jack-in-the-box boss.
Not sure about the no horror part lol. The boss of the Toy Factory level scared the living hell out of me as a child. Everything you said about the music is dead on though.
There's a great video with the Game Grumps somewhere where they play a Banjo Kazooie game (maybe Tooie?) with the composer for that series and they just talk about the music and stuff. It's with Jontron, find it and check it out. Idk if it's the same composer as DK64.

I've been gaming since the early 80s and I couldn't beat DK64. I was incapable. My little sister, however...she blasted through it. She had to be like ten years old at the time. I'm still amazed.
This game really pushed the boundaries of what could be accomplished in the late 90's, and Grant Kirkhope is a champion. As a musician, I still mess around with the songs from this game. The music was so clever and creative.
@@doorknobDingus I play them by ear! The music from most video games of that era won't challenge me on a music theory level, so they're relatively boring. But Grant Kirkhope's music has interesting chord changes and accidentals which keep me perplexed and intrigued. His music is highly original and challenging to figure out to a classically trained ear, which makes it fun for me!
"Pushed the boundaries of what could be accomplished in the 90s" Did it? Graphically it's worse than all arcade games from the era. In terms of gameplay, it's less deep than many titles from the 80s and even some titles from the 70s. I could certainly see how it pushed the boundaries of what was possible on a Nintendo 64, but the PSX also existed during the 90s. I know I'm comparing Apples and Bananas here but stand DK64 next to something like Vagrant Story and I think you'll see what I mean.
This is actually my favorite game to play and have passed the game at least 30 times no joke. I grew up with the game and still play it till this day and now it’s part of my soul!
There is a personally iconic photo of me playing this game on my fifth birthday back in 2001. The framing, the pose, the fit, and the game all come together just perfectly.
The N64 era was a magical time for video games. The creativity and experimentation shown by Rare was indicative of the time and console it debuted on, for sure. I'm in the process of editing a critique of Super Mario 64 and I have to say, Dunk... I think I understand now why it's your favorite game. Without it, there would be no Banjo-Kazooie, no Conker, and no Donkey Kong 64. Truly, I think these games were lightning in a bottle for the 3D platformer genre - I hope one day we can see this kind of creativity return for the video game industry.
@@joedelisle4388 depends, Mario and Zelda are still as good as ever, Fromsoftware is releasing masterpiece after masterpiece ever since Demon’s Souls, Santamonica Studios has succesfully revived the God of War franchise, Rockstar and Platinum are making good games as well. Yes, there are AAA games out there that aren’t very exciting like Assasin’s Creed but overall the big dog developers are still delivering great games.
@@frantschou2369 Zelda died for me after Twilight Princess, Paper Mario was ruined after TTYD (SPM was fun but I considered it a spinoff), basically only thing left is the Super Mario series.
Same. It's fucking great, despite some parts of it being fucking annoying as FUCK 🤣 Like the beetle race, the DK arcade game (which I got better at), and some of the bs minigames
It's got a few annoying parts but overall it has so much charm that modern games are lacking in. I'd put it in my top 20 favorite 3D platformers of all time; maybe even my top 10.
Hearing dunkey chuckling some while he's explaining the absolute chaos of the amount of stuff that's in the game content wise for each DK member is fucking hilarious. I love this game so much though 10000/10 I love the grind of having to collect so much it really lets me enjoy the environments and music of each level and lets me truly appreciate what was and what never will be again such a DIFFERENT and unique aesthetic uniquely only in Rare games during this era of gaming especially with the weird random coloring on walls and an absolute perfection of a music score. Love you dunkey thank you for this.
This game was without a doubt the most hours I spent on my N64 as a kid. Over a decade later I had some roommates in college who had this among others in their collection and I nearly got kicked out because I spent a week straight beating this game instead of looking for a job to help pay rent.
Dunkey, yet another flawless review. Never before has anyone summarised the pain, the torment, the self-torture I endured to pass Donkey Kong 64. AT AGE 9! And you did it. We did it. Thank you.
This game was my whole childhood. I wasnt allowed to play a lot of video games, but my parents were ok with this because me and my brother could play together in the couch co-op. Such good memories
i rarely did the missions, exploring was enough for me! i loved it, collecting all good the bananas, finding secrets. The island with the monster in the cage filled me with a morbid curiosity, and a sadness as he cried. King K Rules HQ absolutely terrified me. so i was content with the DK island
this was one of the first games that showed me games aren't just for kids. When I was like 6, my friends and I all found it too hard so we used to huddle around the 64 and watch my friends mum try and beat the game... good times.
I remember spending what seemed like an eternity playing this game, trying to finish it. Cold Winter mornings and I’d be cozy’d up playing these insanely frustrating mini games. Fond memories 🥹
Us 20/30 year old men have a lot to complain about when it comes to DK64. But as kids? This game was awesome, enormous, packed full of content and everyone in school had it.
Its my firm belief that to this day, DK 64 still holds as one of the best video games of all time. The depth of detail in this game is wild and i still cant believe it only got 1 installment. Its the first video game i EVER played, and is still my favorite to this day
this left so many impressions in my childhood. everytime someone mentions a banana my brain makes me hear the "oooh banana" from 2:13. its been like that for 20 years now.
I'm just impressed that Dunkey has single handedly ushered in a new era of game reviews. Think about it- nothing but Donkey Kong. THIS is something I can get behind.
Gameplay-wise there was a lot of padding for sure, but the devs did a great job making it funny and wonky. The cartoony vibes of the whole package are off the charts and that's what I love most about this game. I'm glad Dunkey made heavy mention of it, surprisingly few people actually appreciate that about it.
Must be nice to have grown up during the n64 Era, I only ever played on an n64 like 3 times, and I didn't even own a game console until I was 9 when I got a Wii. The first game I ever played was New super Mario bros Wii, and 30 great games: outdoor fun, which is also one of the worst games I've ever played in my life, yet I spent like 2 months playing that game with my brother
@@basherblast It really was nice. Watching video games become so advanced from 1995 to now has been absolutely phenomenal. Entertainment wise, the last few decades have been a good time to be alive.
After many years without touching the Nintendo 64, I always regretted not finishing DK64. So, I recently decided to restart the console and beat K. Rool once and for all. That's why I'm happy to announce that yesterday I completed the game (101%) by collecting all 201 bananas. Now, I see bananas everywhere.
Looking beyond all of the flaws, this game represented the best years of my childhood. It came in a bundle when released that had a see-through green N64 and controller plus game, and it blew my mind. It's an amazing game that has a TON of things to do with seriously difficult challenges.
My dad bought me the DK64 Bundle and it was the most amazing thing ever. I tried to play the game off the bat with no help and ended up purchasing the guide. When I got close to the end of game, the hardest part was the Donkey Kong arcade game you had to play. I played the game so much that once I reached the arcade level, my eyes literally felt like a sharp needle was stabbing them. Eventually I beat the arcade and beat the end boss. But yes, after playing it through, I never wanted to see this game ever again. It was so long.
Thank you for bringing me back to my childhood. My dad got me the jungle green N64 edition with this game, and I was so young I though you had to hold up the expansion pack to the screen in order to activate it. Never beat this game but god damn was it a world in itself. The music, the jungles, the puzzles, all so wild! Suffice to say they don’t make games like this no more.
Donkey Kong 64 is clearly just trying to imitate the video game Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. They really went as far as to have the main character be named “Donkey Kong”, just like how the main character of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is named Donkey Kong. Absolutely shameful, you should review that game instead
I revisited this game recently to finally complete it 100% (101% on the game file), because I couldn't do it as a child, and it only took me like 20 hours of gameplay. For a first timer, I think that would be like 30 hours at most. Indeed, there are a lot of things in the game, but it isn't as bad as people think it is. Most games nowadays take like 40+ hours to complete, not including 100%, but people like to shit on this for it anyways. Yes, some minigames were unfairly difficult but they were like 5 out of the 201 golden bananas in the game. This game doesn't really deserve the reputation people nowadays give it.
Dunky has finally done it; he's conditioned me not to believe anything in his videos I had to google if this game actually existed or if he was gaslighting us this entire time.
Was watching the video with smile on my face. Laughed out loud when Dunkey mentioned "Booby Kong" 😂 My wife came from the other room asking what was so funny. I hesitated because there is too much context to explain. She just leaned over took a look at the name and said, "isn't this the guy who made that Shenmue 3 video you keep watching ?" "Yes dear. It's him"
This is probably the only video on UA-cam actually talking about DK64's gameplay and experience from start to finish instead of only piling on the criticism.
With the numerous playable characters, humongah dungah levels, and all the backtracking it’s safe to say that Donkey Kong 64 was truly one of the first strand type games.
I love this game! Every single time I play through I 100% it. Best I can do is like 25 hours, but that's after multiple playthroughs. I remember playing the demo at walmart on one of those n64 kiosks
This was my first ever video game. My parents bought me the Jungle Green N64 with this game included for Christmas when I was 6. My father (divorced from my mom at the time), also bought the same bundle package and when I was able to see him once a week, we'd play the game together. During the off days/weeks when I didn't get to see him, I'd progress a bit in the game then call him and help him thru the levels. I've owned this game since I was 6 and FINALLY beat the game 101% when I was 25. This game holds a piece of my heart that no other game could ever get close.
One of the all-time GOATs of Adventure Platformers. Cannot put into words how much I'd love a sequel to this game, they just don't make stuff like this anymore.
I watched dunkey stream this entire game, and I think my favorite line was probably "if you beat this as a kid, there was actually a gas leak in your house and you just thought you beat it."

That montage of the level themes was really well edited. Really showed off how atmospheric the game is
It wasn't even the level themes though. Just the lobbies' itterations of the main-isles theme. xP
Grant Kirkhope is ridiculously good at what he does.
@@IAmRodyle You should play the Mario + Rabbid games then. Mario music mixed with Kirkhope's style is pure bliss.
God I would love another 3D Donkey Kong in this style. This game defined a huge part of my childhood
Sucks that they haven't since Playtonic is a thing
Add an option to change Kong's whenever and easily the best game there is
Have you played Donkey Kong Frozen Ape yet?
I love how much atmosphere, charm and detail was put into every little inch of these types of games. That’s what made them so special and memorable.
This video takes me back to when Dunkey released the greatest video ever last Donkey Kong December, the nostalgia really hits hard.
My childhood, thank god I had something soothing and carefree like Majora's Mask to cool off from DK64...
uhhh
@@fwoqma To each their own
Memory unlocked. I guess I did jump straight from this after inexplicably being able to beat it as a little kid to fucking Zelda Gaiden lol
DK64 is one of the oldest games I can remember, and the mood and atmosphere just are crazy nostalgic to me.
Same, this game was my absolute CHILDHOOD. I love it to pieces.
(It does have a plethora of problems).
So many sounds in this video from this game unlocked memories I forgot. I definitely knew the whole DJ song back then
It's based.
@@bensrobe it needs a remake badly. It could be so awesome with some tweaks.
I remember being a little kid and being blown away by the atmosphere and graphics.. especially the water. I also remember crying and giving up at the end.
I've been gaming since the early 80s and I couldn't beat DK64. I was incapable. My little sister, however...she blasted through it. She had to be like ten years old at the time. I'm still amazed.
How long does it take to finish thw game?
A causal playthrough of this game is like 40 hours and the speed run is like 26 minutes lmao.
One of the greats
I never played the game before! But after watching this video, my first casual playthrough just turned into a causal playthrough!
@@deejayguppy-n8z Lots of glitches skipping most of the game. The 100% speedrun is 6 hours.
When I was a kid I'm pretty sure I had like a 100 hours until I reached the final K Rool battle
This game really pushed the boundaries of what could be accomplished in the late 90's, and Grant Kirkhope is a champion. As a musician, I still mess around with the songs from this game. The music was so clever and creative.
I’d like to know more about what you mean when you say you “mess around with the songs” that sounds very interesting.
"Pushed the boundaries of what could be accomplished in the 90s"
Did it?
Graphically it's worse than all arcade games from the era.
In terms of gameplay, it's less deep than many titles from the 80s and even some titles from the 70s.
I could certainly see how it pushed the boundaries of what was possible on a Nintendo 64, but the PSX also existed during the 90s.
I know I'm comparing Apples and Bananas here but stand DK64 next to something like Vagrant Story and I think you'll see what I mean.
@@pauldee1577 Do you have any advice for where to start with learning music theory?
This is actually my favorite game to play and have passed the game at least 30 times no joke. I grew up with the game and still play it till this day and now it’s part of my soul!
There is a personally iconic photo of me playing this game on my fifth birthday back in 2001. The framing, the pose, the fit, and the game all come together just perfectly.

@Karl Marx That was not very socialist of you Papi Marx 🧐
The N64 era was a magical time for video games. The creativity and experimentation shown by Rare was indicative of the time and console it debuted on, for sure. I'm in the process of editing a critique of Super Mario 64 and I have to say, Dunk... I think I understand now why it's your favorite game. Without it, there would be no Banjo-Kazooie, no Conker, and no Donkey Kong 64. Truly, I think these games were lightning in a bottle for the 3D platformer genre - I hope one day we can see this kind of creativity return for the video game industry.
the indie games have us covered. the AAA industry is drying up and dying.
Fresh 3D environments and you could feel the creativity oozing out of every game
Mario Odyssey is a pretty good 3D platformer.
I’m getting tired of this whole “AAA is so bad, indie games are the best”. Like for every good indie game there are 1000 indie games that suck ass.

I'd love to have another 3D Donkey Kong like this in my lifetime. Best video game I ever played as a kid
Genuinely agree but they need to do it right. If they just make what is basically DK 64-2 I'd have to seriously consider not buying it.
For real. This was peak collectathon game, after this and Banjo-Tooie it all went downhill.
This is legit on of my favorite games of all time.
Same. It's fucking great, despite some parts of it being fucking annoying as FUCK 🤣 Like the beetle race, the DK arcade game (which I got better at), and some of the bs minigames
But have you tried replaying it? That will make you think twice
It's got a few annoying parts but overall it has so much charm that modern games are lacking in. I'd put it in my top 20 favorite 3D platformers of all time; maybe even my top 10.
@@jakobschulthess2573 No one is the same. If you don't enjoy replaying it now that is fine but others can enjoy it and still do.
If you want to upload anything else to our channel by mistake, let us know. It was our best video.
Many people forget how impactful the DK Rap was, inspiring such rappers as 2pac, Biggie, Dr. Dre to start rapping.
Every time this shows up in my feed i am obligated to watch again.
The unbridled joy of a new Dunkey video after a tough week is really hard to put into words. Thanks dunk x
Very True.
Hope you're doing alright mate
watching dunkeys videos just makes me happy and changes my mood. im so glad he still keeps his format years and years later
This game was without a doubt the most hours I spent on my N64 as a kid. Over a decade later I had some roommates in college who had this among others in their collection and I nearly got kicked out because I spent a week straight beating this game instead of looking for a job to help pay rent.
They should have paid you rent for beating DK64 for them.
The island theme for 64 will be forever in my head cuz i spent sooo much time there as a kid
Yes!
i rarely did the missions, exploring was enough for me! i loved it, collecting all good the bananas, finding secrets. The island with the monster in the cage filled me with a morbid curiosity, and a sadness as he cried. King K Rules HQ absolutely terrified me. so i was content with the DK island
3:58 *"I know it sounds like he's dying--"*
His sounds got me so good lmaoooo
This game was so HARD as a kid… and it’s still hard now. It’s one of my favorite games ever.
this was one of the first games that showed me games aren't just for kids. When I was like 6, my friends and I all found it too hard so we used to huddle around the 64 and watch my friends mum try and beat the game... good times.
After years of watching, the Donkey Kong era might by my favorite era of dunkeys channel
I remember spending what seemed like an eternity playing this game, trying to finish it. Cold Winter mornings and I’d be cozy’d up playing these insanely frustrating mini games. Fond memories 🥹
Thank you dunkey for introducing me to donkey Kong
I would have never found this incredibly obscure underrated Hidden gem of a franchise without you.
DK64 is actually the first game that my family owned, we got it in a bundle with the green translucent N64, so the nostalgia in this video hit *hard*.
Us 20/30 year old men have a lot to complain about when it comes to DK64. But as kids? This game was awesome, enormous, packed full of content and everyone in school had it.
I have had this game for around 20 years and I still do not know how this game ends.
Donkey kong December has really delivered this year. Great video, as always!
Man it doesn't even matter what Dunkey talks about, the videos are always entertaining.
This bizarre trip down memory lane truly is a gem!
I’ve seen the next 10 dunkey videos and I can confirm they are in fact bangers
Thank you for your insight.
This was the first video game I truly owned. It was foundational to my tastes as a gamer. Truly top tier.
My favorite N64 game and in my top 5 of all time. Your love for this game and the series is so infectious too, keep up the good work Dunk!
I love that ending 5:06 also spoiler those of you haven't played DK 64
Oh boy was watching dunkey try for many hours to beat that final boss boxing match fun. The amount of rage at not having a checkpoint.
Straight up, you have to master each section to get to the next, and it fucks with your head each time. A gauntlet to be sure.
I blame my psychotic tendencies on my childhood experience with this game. Shit was bananas
I raged harder at DK64 than at any other game as a kid. My parents hated it
I see what you did there
This video has validated my childhood so damn much. Also now I dont feel as bad for having never beat the game lol
Genuinely enjoy these gaming history series vids.
Wish you'd do more months like this.
Donkey Kong 64 was the ultimate collect-a-thon game
Throughout all the trials and tribulations of this game this is one classic masterpiece that I doubt anybody will forget 🙏🏾💕

Dunky has finally done it; he's conditioned me not to believe anything in his videos I had to google if this game actually existed or if he was gaslighting us this entire time.
Was watching the video with smile on my face. Laughed out loud when Dunkey mentioned "Booby Kong" 😂
My wife came from the other room asking what was so funny. I hesitated because there is too much context to explain.
She just leaned over took a look at the name and said, "isn't this the guy who made that Shenmue 3 video you keep watching ?"
"Yes dear. It's him"
My biggest regret is never beating it as a kid. I got to the last level
I never beat the puzzle monster
The 64th Donkey Game is the most game of time.
This is probably the only video on UA-cam actually talking about DK64's gameplay and experience from start to finish instead of only piling on the criticism.

Such a great game. So much nostalgia. This and Donkey Kong Country, the music alone is great.
I love this game! Every single time I play through I 100% it. Best I can do is like 25 hours, but that's after multiple playthroughs. I remember playing the demo at walmart on one of those n64 kiosks
101%*
This was my first ever video game. My parents bought me the Jungle Green N64 with this game included for Christmas when I was 6. My father (divorced from my mom at the time), also bought the same bundle package and when I was able to see him once a week, we'd play the game together. During the off days/weeks when I didn't get to see him, I'd progress a bit in the game then call him and help him thru the levels.
I've owned this game since I was 6 and FINALLY beat the game 101% when I was 25. This game holds a piece of my heart that no other game could ever get close.
The "get out 👹" after you failed a mini inspired me to never fail one again
