Hi Danielle. I am one who tried WC again after watching your videos. You make it look so easy ,but it just didn't work for me, however, I was visiting a friend in Florida a couple years ago and we went to an orchid greenhouse where they only grow vandas. She told me vandas don't like being potted in any way. She had some that were almost 3 feet across and the only thing holding them was a 3 inch net pot hanging from a wire hook. I couldn't believe it myself. I have never had much luck with vandas, but my friend decided I needed one for my birthday. I got a beautiful "Bankok Sunset". I keep it under a pergola in my backyard during the summer. This lady told me a vanda can take direct sun and cold to 38 degrees. I also saw on the Orchid Diva that she soaks hers twice a day for 15 minutes at a time. I do that and my vanda is doing miraculously and blooms every year. I just love it. I wouldn't presume to tell you what to do but just food for thought. I keep a bucket of rain water near it to dip it in and I usually only do it once a day. It can't hurt since some of them are on their way out anyway. Love your videos and am a little jealous that mine won't work in WC. I know you live in New York state and I live in the Houston Texas area.

I did actually try growing my vanda outside a few years ago during the spring, summer and fall and unfortunately It did not do well. I have finally figured out what she prefers and as you can see from the video she is a very happy plant and constantly in bloom! Unfortunately since I live in upstate New York growing outside for long periods of time is not really an option because our temperatures frequently dip below 30° even in the fall and spring. I am so glad that you live in a more temperate climate and are able to grow your vanda outside and get good results! Enjoy that warm climate!
🌿 WOW! You've given me hope! 💚 I also have Sansai Blue, purchased in 2019 never bloomed. I also have 6 other Vanda's since 2019 and haven't bloomed in my care. Tango Fire, Jay Mullen, Bangkok Sunset, Colmarie, and 2 Somsri Pink. I'm in Arizona 🎋 and don't think they're getting enough light inside. All they're other needs are met. I'm growing bare root soaking 3 hrs daily, fertilizing weekly. Considering hanging them outdoors in spring and autumn. Thoughts 🤔 Did you get a puppy yet? Think about your losses often. Been there. 😥
I’m so glad! I only started getting blooms once it got more light, it has those little purple dots on the top leaves so I know light levels are dialed in. It gets southern light but I added the grow lights and I think that made the difference. I tried growing outside at my old home and I just ended up burning it 🙄 I think if you want to grow outside increase light levels slowly and make sure you increase water as well because I think you live in a dry climate. I’ve never been to Arizona but I would imagine it has less humidity. I did get our new puppy, he’s been with us for 2 weeks! He’s fitting in very well and is super smart. I will try to include him in a video soon! Or maybe I will just post a picture 🤔 🐶🤗
Mimi Palmer is a notoriously difficult hybrid to grow. Even in Florida, it has a tendency to be doing well and then, one day, it just croaks. I think Todd had two of them and they just rotted away, and he grows Vandas far better than I.
I bought my first Vanda Orchid this past Nov. 2022 ... a Mimi Palmer from Vanda Man . Of all the Vanda’s I gotta pick one of the most difficult to keep alive . Living in Ohio trying to duplicate its ideal environment is a challenge to say the least .
I’m so glad I watched this video today. I’m about to buy a Neofinetia falcata (pink) and have been tossing up between S/H leca or try my hand at water culture with this one. I know that the plant I’m buying won’t be all that big so it’s encouraging to see that yours has grown and bloomed so well in water. As you have had yours since 2017 I can see it’s taken a while to get to where you are now. I kind of feel I should give it one year in my care before trying anything new on it. What’s your opinion?
I think one of the reasons mine took so long is I hadn’t quite figured out it’s care until recently. I had it correct enough that it grew well but I finally realized how much light it needed and that it likes a dryer winter. Once I gave it more light and cut back on the water in the winter she started spiking! I think you should go with your gut, if you want to get acquainted with the plant first before trying something new I say that’s an excellent idea. One of the best things we can do as growers is educate ourselves on how they grow so we can make sure to satisfy that in the method we chose to use. Your going to love this plant the pink blooms are so delicate but such a vivid pink and the fragrance is lovely and quite powerful for such a small plant! Enjoy and thanks for watching!
I just found Rhynchostylis coelestis huge one for $72 at Andy’s Orchids booth here in Seattle, garden show… I had a chat with him, he told me he could hold it if I wanted… I didn’t go back after that…. It was gone… 😭 I have 4 Mimi Palmer seedlings in basket. If you want one, it’s yours.

The blooms on the last Vanda have a gorgeous colour. The wait was really worth it. I was amazed at your curvifolium!!! What a huge plant, so may fans!!! I have one but it has only one fan and I had some trouble getting it on track and grow which is doing now. I hope she speeds up a bit, coming the warmer days !!!
Thank you my friend! I actually purchased a large plant but she did bloom for me the first year I had her. Mostly because I did research right away on her and realized I had to give a bright dry winter. I usually do research after the plant doesn’t bloom to try to figure out why 😂 and then I forget to write it down and usually mess up again 🤣 one day I will get better about this. As I am doing this video series I and trying to update my notes as I go. I hope your curvifolium gets going for you soon!
In Japan, winter is very dry. A nursery in Japan from Instagram encouraged me to grow one outside here all year long…. He said it would take low 20 F…. Of course I was not brave enough to test with one and only Neo… but I just got another one so I might do that. It is also very hot and humid in Japan in summer.
My Neo is very close to a cold window through the winter and I do give it a more dry winter. It’s been blooming for me so I think it’s happy. I don’t blame you for hesitating to put your plant outside 🥶
Oooohhh Rhyncholstilis coelestis... I have that in a cross, and it is not getting with the program either. Brown leaf tips, possibly high fertilizer levels? Yes!! Phew! I can’t tell you how much it make me feel better to hear your coelestis is being a brat for you too! I look at this plant every week and shrug my shoulders because I just don’t understand! It’s hard not to envy your more temperate climate, I always think it would be lovely not to deal with snow for months on end. It is hard to get some traction on YT here in Europe. New EU regulations have taken hold and YT doesn't really bother with the black hole market of Europe for that reason. Their interest is on Asia, India and Brazil.... so, your kind words are very encouraging, thank you ❤🙌🏼❤

Hi Danielle, my Vanda Mem Katherine McCartney has a spike and what looks like a keiki to me and it has some happy sap. My Rntda Cherry Rose is giving me good root growth but no spikes or blooms. My Vanda Bai Blue bloomed for me once since I added it to my collection, no spikes currently but good root growth. My Vanda Adisak-Kultana Ruby is probably a year or two away from blooming size. What is the barley extract that you are adding to the water do you buy it or make it? Always enjoy watching your videos :) Happy Growing
