Omg, I am loving the interest in Awkward Audit (and your alternative suggestions for the title. You are a clever bunch...lol)
If you guys feel comfortable sharing publicly, would you mind adding a link to your video under this pinned comment? I'll pick the one that offers the most lessons (good and bad), and then do a deep dive.
I might regret this but here's my one week movie for Campus Movie Festival from 5 years ago. ua-cam.com/video/4TN9bJPaBkM/v-deo.html (it was flagged as copyrighted material so might not be the best choice just wanna inform you).
ua-cam.com/video/ALHwusEkyQQ/v-deo.html
It has music that might break your monetization but i filmed and edited this, I’m sure there’s a lot that can be pointed out.
ua-cam.com/video/KQfyXNAL19I/v-deo.html
the only video I'm ok with sharing are unfortunately Typokinetic of copyrighted song. So not really UA-cam friendly. i've put them in a google drive so you can view them but i am not gonna put them on youtube for legal reason.

Let's try this one. It was for a course I did at the beginning of 2022. It was supposed to be just a straight up unboxing, but I went high and to the right with it. ua-cam.com/video/xdftjzCCx7o/v-deo.html
Explaining why you're making those editing choices based on "beats" or feeling is just as crucial as the technical "how" it's done. I love that you're showing both sides of that process so far on your channel. Thanks again for sharing your craft with us.
Thanks TheMenefee! Your comment perfectly summarizes the goals of this channel. I'm so happy that's coming through! 😊
Amy seems like she would crush at Dungeons and Dragons. Telling stories together is better than alone.
My thoughts exactly....
Yes, with my $9 plastic sword from Spirit Halloween!! 🙌
@@AwkwardAnthems If you joined the dropout team Dimension 20 (not saying you should EVER put aside your solo career), I would have a stroke. A positive one.
@@AwkwardAnthems Be careful, they might set up shop in your home!
I thought exactly the same.
I still remember the first editing trick I learned. Turn the camcorder sideways while attached to the TV and I can act like Batman and Robin from the 60s.
I don’t even think it counts as editing, but I felt like a real movie director.
Ha! Relatable. 😂 I used to put a mirror under my nose and walk around the house pretending I was walking on the ceiling. I'm so glad TikTok did not exist in 1996.
Really enjoying your content. I promise that with your new expanded subscriber base, today is the day you learn that "linear" is a three-syllable word.
Dan, I am getting SUCH an education on this word! We are ALL learning something today. LOL! My brain can't find that 3rd syllable. I'm saying it out loud right now, and it's still not connecting. 😂
I could not possibly be more in love with you. Those childhood clips are the best thing I’ve ever seen! Great shirt by the way 😍
My partner has impeccable taste. Got me branded in grey AND blue now! 😘
"we have an update on the man with the buttcrack"
- havent laughed like that in a minute.
I'd love to see an Adam Neely-style critique of folks' editing! I might even be brave enough to submit a video of my own....
Oooh, styled like Adam Neely! I like that. (Be brave! Do it.) 🤓

My friend had to this assignment in her film course: Take any trailer of any genre and flip it.
If it's a comedy make it a horror. If it's a romance/family make it a horror/thriller.
She ended up doing Harry Potter, making the thriller/action part closer to a full on teen comedy.
Such a fun exercise! Love it.
I don't know if I'm imagining it, it really is the case, or if you're just doing a great job of faking it, but you seem a lot more confident in this video than you have in previous ones, and I'm absolutely here for it
My last livestream had the unique effect of being SO scary, that the idea of farting publicly on the internet as a woman in her late 30's felt like a safe AND comfortable choice!

Amy is to “The Magic of Editing” as Legal Eagle is to “The Power of Attorney”
Solid video! I've enjoyed video editing a bit as a hobby, but I've never really had anyone to talk to about it. Hearing someone else share their passion for editing is delightful.
Thanks, Felicity! ✨
Your approach and genuine nature will help you go far. Hope this little bit helps towards the future.
Thanks, John John! Very kind of you. 💛
I love this channel. I’m actually in film school and the reason I went is cuz I used to edit for small UA-cam creators. I learn and am entertained a lot by your channel
Hello. Here just to say that I am not a video editor (or an editor of any ssort really). I just like to learn how people make stuff. It gives me a greater apreciation of what they do. I don't think I will get into video editing, but just learning what it takes, makes me greatful for every person behind the scenes.
That amazing and subtle presentation skill, particularly in a host/narrator format where precise vocal inflection, timing, and rhythm cues aren't dialed in from simple mimicry, is unheard of at such a young development stage. Crazy high social and emotional intelligence seems to have super early roots for you!
I really wish my 11 year-old self could peek into the future and read this comment! So thoughtful. Thank you. 💛
This comment expresses my thoughts far more eloquently than I could have! Awkward was practically born to be a youtuber and had the cadence DOWN by the time she got her first camera! :D
@@calyodelphi124 Exactly my thoughts. Her cadence and delivery even at that age was impressive.
Quality video... no surprise. Came here to say that is a weird way to say "linear" lol (Been in the business since 3/4" editing and pre-roll days). Editing is certainly easier these days... but is it better? Maybe for the current gen. I still love the opening of "Once Upon a time in the West". Super happy I came across your channel (thanks YT) I Like the idea of reviewing vids. Good luck!
I'd love to see you and Jordan Orme collaborate. He's a music video editor but I think it would be cool to see how you each view the different editing techniques given your different content experiences. Love the new channel!
Not familiar! Will have to check him out. Thanks for the suggestion! 💛
I'm an old guy surfing UA-cam. I like the legal channel you worked on and probably got your work pushed on to my screen. I'm not into editing or composing video but I am informed by and enjoy your content. I'm reminded of Joe Scott and a little of Casey. Keep it up I'll look forward to the next upload.
"we have an update on the man with the buttcrack" OMG LOL!
love this - some of the concepts you are applying to editing come from design and photography priniciples that have been used even before sound was added to motion pictures. Many forget the creative process is not a 'technical' job that just operates software on a computer, but is actually judgment, technique and decision making to create/manipulate emotions.
Definitely! So many parallels there. It's a lot more involved than just button pushing!
You have a dynamite charisma, which really makes these videos entertaining to watch. I’ve been thinking about where “charisma” comes from over the last couple of days, obviously there is no single answer, but one way is when people are talented get a chance to use their talents in a way that they enjoy.
Enthusiasm paired with ability is energizing to see, and this is coming from someone that doesn’t inherently care too much about editing or design! I know it’s useful and I respect those who work in those fields, but I myself would rather just play guitar or write and/or speak to share the story.
So far I’d say you’re crushing it, so good luck, and I’ll probably keep watching!
0:54 The hands pulling away the actual physical paper title card absolutely made my day. Love it! And your delivery cadence is amazing.
Audits would be amazing. When you decide to start a channel, you quickly realize that you have to learn editing on the fly and it's, uh, complicated. I would love to see your thoughts on specific pieces of editing
Cadyshack is a case study in the Magic of Editing. The entire story of the movie was changed by editing what was in the can. Also, I've read that the first Star Wars movie was rescued by a brilliant editor, who whipped the story line into shape.
4 words:
awkward hat montage please.
In fact, a lesson on the history and usage of montages would be awesome!
Amen, sister. One of the big lessons I learned after 30 years at Pixar is that movies are made in editing, and everybody else just supplies the raw materials.
Hey Craig! Did you really work for Pixar for 30 years?? I'd love to know more about your experience, as a huge fan of Pixar movies (and as someone that can really appreciate the monumental effort in every detail that goes into THAT). Would you mind sending me an email? My business account is in the description box. 🙌
@@AwkwardAnthems I'll hunt for the description box right now!
@@AwkwardAnthems Yup. Just sent you an email.

The Gameboy spot is what got me because you spoke to my soul when I was a child.
I mean I ain't gonna fight your perspective of little you because that'd make me a hypocrite, but you were fkn UPSKILLING, Amy!
Even now, I could barely deliver that news anchor voice while saying "buttcrack" and keeping a straight face - and I'm 30 with history in theatre and sales.
I think it's also worth mentioning that certain types of edits work for certain types of visuals. A Star Wars-style edit (circle fade in, left wipe, etc) doesn't work with something more grounded like a Bourne movie. That's why some editors struggle with transitioning styles.
Also, don't worry about your adolescent cringe. I was cringe until my mid-20's.
Really cool video, I enjoyed watching twice to understand and then see how you applied this editing methodology to your own video on it. Very cool
as a professional editor myself, yeah! I agree! pacing is the thing that every editor must focus the most on, apart from tone
I've had the joy of cutting movie films when i worked in one of the last independant movie theatre 20 years ago. we had to cut in the ads and assemble the movie films themselve in the correct order. A tedious and somewhat scary process, but that was sooo satifying and chill to do. Hopefully I messed up only one time playing an ad reversed and didn't screw the whole movie premiere. I'd love so much one day, to get back at that medium and put VFX/editing the way the OG's did it, but with our modern twist and tricks.
I'd love to see the awkward audit! I haven't made a video in years but I'd love to watch breakdowns of school projects and such. As a graphic design student I find these parallel skills in other fields super interesting and would love to know what an expert thinks about possibly more amateur works.
You were an adorable kid!
Thanks for doing these videos. I look forward to the next one!
Linear editing, like typing on a typewriter, forces you to think very carefully about what you're doing.
Im so glad I Subscribed, you are so entertaining and fun to watch!
I love your style.
A critique videos series is much needed, by creators who want to improve, anyway. Most of us work in a vacuum, and we rely on likes, dislikes, or that fiercest critic, Algo the Rithm to tell us if we are good or not. Feedback always helps.
That is the hardest laugh I have had in a while. Kudos!!
Super excited for the next vid. Can't wait to get more hands on
Your videos are just awesome. It might sound corny, but its so refreshing to see someone like you doing what you do. Keep it up! 👍
Editing can be a powerful tool to create a hook where one would not normally exist. Thank you for bringing this up as I've not really used many brain cells on this staple. Also, it made my day to see your early video making self, YOU ROCK!
Love it! I'm getting strong Every Frame a Painting vibes.
😂😂😂 I was not expecting that kind of magic! Switched on all notifications, hopefully I don't miss the next video. I am not even into editing but your sense of humour is just so magical and, thankfully, scent-free (for me at least) 🤣
Ah, the magic of editing. Or pacing, in my case. I'm honestly bewildered by pacing. Granted, I produce animations in so many different ways, pacing's often something that's next to impossible to get right for me. Like, I often feel like my animations go too quickly and I'm always having to stretch them out while editing. Which is fine in 2D work, but it's nearly impossible in 3D after a certain point. But still, it's absolutely critical to get pacing down. Good planning goes a long way toward that, and that's definitely something I gotta get better at. I just need to quit rushing everything. Or take time to figure out exactly how I want to do it and just take notes I can refer to later. But still, it's something we all get better at as long as we're willing to pay attention and be honest with ourselves about what we make. Honesty and attention's the key!
Not only your editing, but your camera presence is pretty great. 6:32 - 6:37 had me laughing pretty dang hard, just from your delivery. 😛🍍
Great, very useful video. Thank you so much. Such a great point about "beats". I realize that the creators whose editing I admire... that's what I'm admiring. Their pacing. And I definitely vote yes on the Awkward Audits series!
Awkward Audit sounds _amazing_! The "Professional reacts" genre is so good for learning!
I see this as a prelude to a future "We'll-Fix-It-In-Post" video. 😊
Loved it. Keep 'em comin'. Both informative and entertaining.
That trailer? Priceless.
(Been there. Done that. Never left the house.)
Cheers.
I absolutely love this idea, and sorry for being late to the party. Your passion a palpable and I love it.
I personally am not sure I would want someone breaking apart my tremendous ineptitude in video editing, but I do also feel you are capable of doing so in a positive way. I am looking forward to seeing where that idea goes.
Thanks, Lee! I appreciate that. 🙂
¡This is cool! ¡Amazing video! Im also an editor for a big channel and i have learned this through trial and error. Its also important to note that the rythm from your video always depends on the audience. Typically younger audiences need faster beats, because their brains need a lot of stimuli to retain attention. Adults typically need slower beats and way more relaxed sound and image atmospheres to enjoy a video and inmerse in it.
¡Also i really wanted to thank you cause you have inspired me to be an educator outside of schools and i started my own youtube channel! ¡Hugs all the way from argentina!
What channel do you edit for? (no pressure if you don't wanna say.) Yeah, I agree! I think we're all just the product of whatever was "cool" in our more formative years. It explains why my brain is still mentally a little stuck in music videos from the early 00's. 😂I remember when people used to complain about the short attention span of the MTV generation. Now we have TikTok and I feel ACTUAL sympathy. lol Different audience. Different speed. (Best of luck with your channel, btw)!
I hope I don't sound like I'm mocking you, but I'm totally using inverted exclamation marks when I'm typing English from now on (when appropriate).
@@AwkwardAnthems Oop sorry for the delay! thanks for the response! I work for an argentinian vlogging channel, 650k subs, its content targets younger audiences. I wont name the channel because of recent personal issues.
Going back to topic, editing videos for younger audiences was so difficult for me at first. I study image and sound design, so my reference were cinema and tv, and those are wildly different to what we are becoming used to see on youtube. The adaptation phase from really thought cuts, to constant jumpcuts, blatant sound effects, high music levels to keep stimuli high, and other techniques were so much against my instinct. But yeah, it works, somehow. Theres not one technique to edit great videos, but actually lots of them that when used combined can be great to target specific audiences.
I think that the only company that figured a working and consistent polyrythmic approach in terms of writing and editing to be able to appeal to all audiences alike is Disney. They know how to put value for all audiences on a single audiovisual piece.
@@eaterdrinker000 Oh no! You are not mocking me! hahah (¿Jajaj?). Im a spanish speaker (most of my day i speak spanish, though i share a lot of time with online friends from all over the world everyday), and my backwards exclamation and interrogation signs slipped out into english! Sorry about that one!
Well said! Yeah, there really is an art to tailoring the speed/vibe to different audiences (particularly one that goes against your natural instincts).
I gotta say, I love me some awkward. Fantastic video, though the bit about the fruit stripe gum hit me in the childhood feels XD
Ok, so, as a writer, I totally get the narration beat. In poetry is even more notorious. Really, just one syllable can ruin or perfect the flow of the emotions that you can find in a poem. That is why i hate it when people read poems as if it were prose XD No! There is a reason why those are verses! You don't need a comma, just feel the damn thing!!
My point is that yes, I think in all artistic endevours, "beats" are an important key factor, and I am so glad that you pointed this out. I am a drummer too, so I know my beats.
So magical!
love your content!
So well done!! I never really know what to expect lol
Smol Amy is too adorable! 😭
I'm not a content creator, not involved in the creative arts and have a passing interest in media (I watch stuff, I'll watch some BTS DVD extras, but really nerdy detail goes over my head) and your video was still engaging for me.
Oh and it's a good thing time machines don't exist - if 11 year old you knew what you did with her content, she would be really pissed off with you 🤣
I only have some 3D Studio work, some commercial background music, and an AMV from 2004 under my belt, but yeah this is why I love the AfterEffects work
(and the beats)
e: wow nice flip, awesome

Do awkward audit!!!! That's the kind of thing I subscribed for!
My new favorite channel
Looking to improve my editing creativity (and skill) and look forward to some of your work and tutorials. I think your content is pretty clever.
this is freaking awesome
Playing all videos back at 2x help keep the boredom down
Love the content! (Something kind of random though, as you were doing a lot of push ins, the wall behind you was drawing my attention often because the vertical lines kept moving)
Excellent content. Thank you.
The "We'll fix it in post" part really resonated though.. Because its so difficult to fix something thats just objectively awful.. I play games and decided one day to record and edit that.. It made me realize that I play like absolute $%#+ for content. Its like watching a child who just learned they can run around try finding something.. And thats incredibly difficult to fix in post.. I had to remove entire sections because it was too much.. Really makes you realize you kind of need to be your audience while creating.
Annother great video, awesome work!!!
Lol, I used to make commercials for my toys too. Actually I made commercials for everything I could like food, hairbows, shoes...whatever.
That's fascinating, you had a real good idea of what to do with a camera at such a young age. I did play with a camera myself when I was a child, but I only used it to make stop-motion animation with my Legos. It's funky that with this I decided to get into comics, animation and storytelling.
Motion graphics is gonna be fun to see, since I've loved having experience working in motion graphics for five years before I decided to settle for illustration and comics. I mean, I still do it when the occasion arises.
Hey!! Thanks Nik. Having seen your work (including the animations of your illustrations), I know you're fully capable of making the transition. I've considered reaching out to you for possible illustration work on this channel, but I don't know how busy you've been with LE. Hope all is well! 🌻
@@AwkwardAnthems I'd sure love to hear it at least. I'm not busy with LE at all since illustration is almost never employed, but I do get by on other spots. What would you like?
I don't even know yet, but I'm leaning towards cartoon me in an opening bumper for a new series, with your signature style. What's your email? I'll be in touch!
I’m just commenting so you get engagement lol. Great video. I’d love to see you critique editing.
I do think a critique series would be useful, but I would almost suggest limiting it to people submitting their own videos, rather than looking/hoping for easy dunks on someone else's content. Helps to keep things positive (or at least asked-for negative)!
Not only would I love to watch this, but I would pay to be at the table.
Awkward audit would be awesome! Corridor Crew seems to be doing very well with a similar concept, but for VFX

Okay but seriously I want to know what happened about the man with the buttcrack.
You can't leave us on that cliffhanger.
It's interesting to see how different editing is from post-production of VFX work. It's similar but after listening to this I see it's a totally different approach with the same end goal.
There's just word to describe you, Miss. And that's Adorkable.
Awkward Audit is an amazing concept.
Love the old footage and can defiantly see you as a director. One thing I'd recommend is a patreon or other way of supporting you since I'm not an editor and would likely never use a template. I just enjoy your story telling and love to learn things.
Thanks, MrTV! I do have a Patreon set up, but haven't made a public announcement just yet! I'm in the process of figuring out what kind of exclusive content would be of most value. Open to ideas if you have any! I'll probably make a poll and decide based on general consensus. I appreciate the support and thanks for the comment! 💛
@@AwkwardAnthems haha ok level 1 just support level 2 exclusive content like a template level 3 audit and skip the line to get an audit done ummm hey ur not the only awkward one round here 🤣😂
Oooh, good ideas! I'll keep those in mind. 👍
I'm pleasantly surprised to see this content seems to be coming in fairly quickly
love it :)
This vid was cool, not entirely sure what it was about, but still cool
...I misunderstood your teaser post. Sorry!! For some reason I read editing as FX editing. Maybe that's more like the motion graphics stuff you mentioned at the end of this video? Either way I'm looking forward to seeing more of your work.
I think I'd enjoy a series where you recreate editing tricks used in big tv/film productions. Maybe your favorite techniques or ones you really dislike. It's always neat to hear an expert's perspective on their art.
Awesome vid! It is something I've noticed as I've gotten progressively more experienced at editing - stuff is more entertaining if there is a rhythm and a flow to it, and I find myself lately, whenever possible, over-recording because when I cut it down, it is a LOT easier to line my footage up with a rhythm. And as for Awkward Audit... YES PLEASE! Doing gaming content on youtube is a lot different from doing a traditional vid - because of how games play you are forced into at least some degree of linearity both recording and editing. There's a lot you can do, playing with sound/music/cuts/transitions etc, but you still have to stay on that path. I've pushed myself HARD for over a year to just get better at using editing to make my vids as entertaining and different as I can, and I feel like that's been a huge contributing factor to my finally hitting the 1K subs mark. So when I sat down to do my 1K special, I decided to go a whole lot nuts and try and use a game to make a movie. My most popular game is a weird little driving game so I used that for the base, I spent hours setting up and recording shots to be used, and then I just threw everything I have ever learned at it to try and tell a coherent story in ten minutes with nothing but the editing. I would absolutely love to have a professional editor's views on it, for good or bad lol! 😂
100%. My brother actually suggested that I check out more gaming content. I'm not a gamer, but can appreciate the difficulty in producing engaging content with a more limited canvas, so to speak. Might be fun to explore that!
@@AwkwardAnthems I think the best part of gaming content is that the limited options actually makes GOOD gaming vids 100% reliant on the creator to make it entertaining with personality, editing or both. God knows I've seen plenty of bad gaming content lol, but there's a lot of cool creators doing some really engaging things with it.
Very true!
Arrggghhhh! Posted at 1am over here! It's bloody Friday already!!! Uplaod your videos earlier please... I'm sure my neighbours appreciate me laughing my nuts off whilst trying to sleep... 😜
Great editing is akin to great percussion. Subpar editing can really affect the story negatively, a subpar drummer can ruin the song, sometimes the whole album.
Great comparison! As a drummer, I feel this in my soul. And it's also about pacing: A really simple groove that's consistent ("in the pocket") can hold down a song much more effectively than a plethora of fancy fills that's disconnected from the other musicians. 🥁🍍
@@OriginalPineapplesFoster Amy's timing is excellent, important in comedy *and* percussion... Guess she could learn to tickle the skins if this while editing/UA-cam thing doesn't work out... 😁
Great video!
