Jodie foster's razor sharp intellect & Robert Downey Jr humour is the reason why this pairing is the greatest and icing on the cake, the are lifelong friends.
Two Icons!! Jodie is one of the most talented artists and she has seen it all child actor to adult to Director!! And Robert is so good and everything he does, he is so talented!!❤🤩
Jodie foster being so content at 60 makes so much sense. This woman has been an achiever throughout her life. Starting her career at age 3, a global movie star by age 12, first Oscar nomination at age 13, graduated high school as a valedictorian, had near perfect SAT scores & graduated Yale with magna cum laude, won two Oscars by age 28, directed her first movie at age 27 etc. I'm glad she's taking time to relax and not compete with her past self
One thing about Jodie Foster is that this woman is a true friend & a loyal human. She was the first person to contact Rob Lowe following his sex tape scandal & went out of her way, going against the producers by getting him cast for a role in Contact (1997), when his acting career was plummeting. She was the one to straighten out Robert Downey Jr. regarding his addiction issues and wrote him an empowering letter (which he mentions in this conversation) while he was in jail & rehabs. Of all his actions, she always stood by Mel Gibson as a friend without condoning his actions. She was the only public figure to defend Kristen Stewart after she was thrust into a maelstrom of hatred following her affair with a married director. Jodie Foster is one remarkable woman, who's cinematic legacy is unparalleled, but also, whose cultural impact is undeniable even if people don't want to acknowledge it. I'm beyond shocked she hasn't received the AFI Life Achievement Award & Kennedy Centre Honours yet.
I was just noticing that. Her eyes are a stunning blue. People have told me how beautiful my eyes are (not bragging: stating other people's opinions) and I had to go in and look at mine in a mirror and compare. My eyes are blue, but her eyes are azure. It's the difference between the sky just after sunset and a tropic ocean at midday. I could fall into hers. Mine are just a little bit cold.
I admire Jodie Foster's honest statement on how Robert Downey Jr. evolved : "You came to the table with this just joy, freedom about the play of what it is to be an actor, and you didn't have the discipline part necessarily down for a number of years. Then, increasingly over time in your martial artist way because you do martial arts, you've become this extraordinarily discipline person" Shows her keen sense of observation and analysis.
Always good to be reminded that Jodie advocated hard for him to get help when she directed him and saw how deep in substance abuse he was back then. These two know each other very well
She emanates intelligence. She works out at my gym and you just sense this kindness and compassion from her and this fierce emotional intelligence about her. It’s hard to explain.
I will never stop saying how much I love Actors on Actors and this pairing is one of the best I have ever had on. You can see the admiration Jodie has for Robert and the joy she has seeing him so happy, and you can see how much Robert admires her and values her opinion. Their entire conversation is absolutely effortless. Bravo to whomever put this together.
I find her spirit to be very confrontational and over emotional. Like its not directed at bad intentions, but there is 0 chill and peace about her. She's like the first social justice warrior, mad about the world and all its injustices. You'd think at this age, shed calm down a little. We all learn not to let it consume us eventually.
She has always been so straight up. I interviewed the white people that as students went to Mississippi to help Blacks sign up to vote in 1964. They were still as passionate. I don't think folks chill as they get older...I'm 67. Since I am Black, I am always happy with Social Justice Warriors. I love that term SJW, it reaffirms that social justice is so hard to achieve that it takes warriors.
@@ScotteMConfrontational? She's laid-back as hell. And shy and reserved. You're projecting. How is she the first SJW when she spent all her career saying she doesn't feel comfortable being a spokesperson or activist for anything. You clearly don't know much about her.
Robert Downey Jr. seems to be in a good mood since his Oscar win and i absolutely love that. He's the embodiment of a Golden Retriever. Jodie Foster and Robert Downey are such kindred spirits and have been there for each other through the most difficult times in their personal lives. So glad we're finally getting a nice glimpse of their long standing friendship. 🤗✌️
Kids now don’t realize how famous Jodie is. She was on the cover of every teen magazine in the 70’s. I would argue she has had a career much longer than most any other actor her age. Besides maybe Drew Barrymore and RDJ.
I love how Jodie is so nonchalant about her age and you can see she is naturally beautiful, inside and out too! And Robert Downey Jr has gotten better with age! Both of them actually. Just really talented actors and Hollywood would not be the same without them.
Jodie Foster is so damn beautiful and elegant. She’s such a boss. Robert is still the coolest guy in the room and aging beautifully as well. Two Hollywood legends here.
I remember when RDJ presented Jodie with her lifetime achievement award at the Golden Globes, about a decade back. Her speech then was amazingly moving-especially the part about her Mum. I still go back and listen to it from time to time.
I love her, and I love him. Silence of the Lambs and Tropic Thunder-OMG! I also love that she protects his past. She knows his journey from then to the man he is today.

Love that these two have finally done one of these together. And that they talked about “Home for the Holidays” for awhile. A fantastic film that doesn’t get much fanfare and it should.
The greatest pairing of two cinematic titans. Jodie foster is not just an extraordinary actor, a genius, an intellectual, but also an extraordinarily loyal friend, who helped every friend of her's in their lowest of low point. She helped Robert Downey Jr. during his addiction crisis ruthlessly until he got back on the right track. This woman is quite possibly the most remarkable human alive.
I remember when I turned 50. A lot of people I knew died before they lived through their 5th decade. It is so freeing to appreciate the time one has had and make the most of what is left. I totally understood what Jodie meant about feeling OK
Their chemistry is fun, but the intelligence level with these two is incomparable. She is so much more thoughtful in how she speaks and explains things, like how she is as a director. RDJ learned the hard way, glad he's recovered.
RDJ's intelligence is quite brilliant as well. He's an intuitive bringing deeper meaning connecting the dots. Big picture thinker. Jodie more of one idea explained sequentially well. Different styles, but both intelligent.
Yeah I reckon they're probably within 4 IQ points of each other. It's not intelligence difference, just perspective and personality and experience difference get it
What a great conversation! I'm the same age as Jodie and I grew up watching her and I just love that she hasn't done anything to her face and still looks like herself. RDJ looks great, too, and it's a joy to see him so happy and grounded. ❤
Everybody knows this story by now, but RDJ was so whacked out abusing drugs during Home For the Holidays, Jodie pulled him aside to say “never mind this silly holiday comedy we’re trying to make, I am seriously worried that YOU MIGHT DIE!” I don’t know how RDJ charts his own recovery, but I believe it’s just starting with this movie & I do credit Jodie for helping save his life. Jodie Foster's Home For The Holidays (1995) starring Holly Hunter and Robert Downey Jr. is a movie that i watched every once in a while during vacation whether it's Christmas or Summer break, it's just a perfect movie to watch during vacation. Seeing them reuniting just for this interview makes me so happy 🤗

Jodie couldn't be more correct describing holidays with family!!! "Home for the Holidays" is one of my favorite movies..she hit the nail on the head with that one!!! xo

Kept her private life private and never tried to be controversial or embarrassingly vain like a lot of currently aging actors. She isn't a celebrity, she's a bona fide star.🌟
Love this one! They are both super smart and quick. But also, they respectfully and graciously address the madness that was RDJ's life back then! Great talents!
I so love Home for the Holidays, watched it so many times since I was a kid. Didn't know it was Jodie Foster's! Makes so much sense. Thank you for joining them.
Jodie Foster has to be one of the most interesting, intelligent, open, educated, sincere, honest and beautiful woman I can think of. Downey is in a league of his own. Thanks for this.
I came here in the hopes I would see them discuss "Home For The Holidays". A film I have loved since it's release in 1995. This video segment between these two legends did not disappoint. Thank you for the entertainment, knowledge and insight, Variety. Much love and respect to these two featured icons, Jodie Foster and Robert Downey, Jr.
Home for the Holidays was just brilliant. It was almost like a play, that was perfectly orchestrated. I remember just being struck with how brilliantly, acted, written and directed it was. It captured perfectly the bittersweetness of family life and the normalization of non normal behavior because its familiar. It perfectly picked up on how family's each have role to play, and even as adults they regress to thier childhood roles when they gather again. The film was just perfection. And for a 30 year old, and relatively new director it was astounding.
There’s something truly magical about people who get to catch up with one another after many many years go by. I’m not sure if this is an experience most normal people ever get to experience that often unfortunately. This was very pleasant getting to see two people get to share this experience. We should live in a world where this type of thing happens more often for regular people as well.
I love Robert Downey SO MUCH, he's so talented, sweet, charming, charismatic, funny, smart, and just an all around inspiration! 🌟 I love his paradoxical personality, he can appear very confident and sure of himself while at the same time, he has fears and insecurities he constantly tries to push through. Jodie Foster is so talented and inspiring as well, I love her strong, confident and kind personality. She's so smart, talented and perceptive. Robert makes me smile with his shy side, when he covers his face cause he's self conscious or cause what he's picturing him gets him all anxious. 🥰 Love the interview, they're both so great.
GREAT PAIRING!!! I respect both of these artists SO much, which is what drew me to watch this episode. I've watched several of Variety's "Actors on Actors" and find this one to be the most natural pairing. It was refreshing to hear two iconic actors talk openly about their current projects with reverence instead of simply plugging each other's work. I remember "Home For The Holidays" but didn't realize that Jody Foster directed it!! I think I'll watch it this holiday season with my 90 year-old mother who has dementia. 😁
I first became aware of Jody when I watched Hotel New Hampshire, and Robert completely blew my mind in Less Than Zero although I'd seen him in other films before. Been a hardcore fan of both of them eversince. Thank you for bringing them together, this is very exciting!
What I found most enjoyable about this segment is the fact that these two actors have been as brave on screen as they have in real life. Thank you Ms Foster and Mr. Downey...for your honesty on both sides of the lens. #variety #jodiefoster #robertdowney #myunfetteredadmiration

Don’t get me wrong; Panic Room is a pretty good movie, but Lordie!
I so love Home for the Holidays, watched it so many times since I was a kid. Didn't know it was Jodie Foster's! Makes so much sense. Thank you for joining them.
Sr was a gift. For those of us that have lost our fathers it resonates. Beautiful sadness.
Jodie Foster has to be one of the most interesting, intelligent, open, educated, sincere, honest and beautiful woman I can think of. Downey is in a league of his own. Thanks for this.
I'd listen to these two every two weeks! Bring it on!!!
I completely agree.
Robert is such a gentle man. I like the way he talks.
Jodie is almost 60yrs old ..and does‘nt look more than 45yrs old..aged like fine wine
She was always pretty
She’s 62 this year.
filter dude.
@piggy310 Cue Yello's "Oh Yeah!"
And he’s fit as fk lol
Jh. England 🏴
her blue eyes are one of the pretiest blue eyes on this planet. There just shine like a diamond 🙏
My friend looks just like her’ it’s the eyes. Jh. England 🏴
Titans of our time and wonderful spirits. Thank your for allowing us to be part of your wonderful conversation.
Love RObert! He’s came a long way! Proud of his success 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
Two of the best! I could watch and listen to these two for hours… so loveable and heartwarming.
I LOVE Home for the Holidays and I'm so glad that they spent so much time talking about it!
The two born to be icons, unfortunately for them. I hope the good moments keep them through their lives. Jodie finally lets us see her genius.
Can't wait for this one!! Robert and Jodie!! Two iconic actors!! 🔥🔥🔥💯💯💯
*My love for Jodie Foster is boundless.* 🥰
A great mind she is
I first became aware of Jody when I watched Hotel New Hampshire, and Robert completely blew my mind in Less Than Zero although I'd seen him in other films before. Been a hardcore fan of both of them eversince. Thank you for bringing them together, this is very exciting!
Brilliant performance in Less Than Zero
What I found most enjoyable about this segment is the fact that these two actors have been as brave on screen as they have in real life. Thank you Ms Foster and Mr. Downey...for your honesty on both sides of the lens. #variety #jodiefoster #robertdowney #myunfetteredadmiration
Variety, PLEASE put RDJ in more Actors on Actors, he’s mood, charisma and vibe are incomparable!!
This is one of the absolute best actors on actors edition! Loved it.
I'd watch them talk every few weeks. Great actors, love the clear respect they have for each other.
Foster and Robert Downey Jr. are two of my most favorite actors because of their personality is and how they act. This was really a wonderful episode. Thank you.👏👍☮️💙
This is the pairing I never knew I needed in my life. More of the two of them, please!
This was so great!!! I have the greatest respect for both Jodi and Robert. I have not seen either of their new movies yet and didn't even know they had new movies.
To this day, I adore Home For the Holidays. ❤ perfect movie.
Top two Talents in Hollywood. Jodie is Smart, and has aged beautifully. Both are great at what they do. Jodi and Robert both bring their characters to life. Doesn't get much better than these two.
I don't watch all of these, but the second I saw these two together I was in. Watch the whole thing, and I was right. The perfect pairing!
Two of the most respected and iconic actors of their generation. So many remarkable performances throughout their careers that it makes this "chat" between them a must watch. Brilliant.
Lately I have been thinking that first, it's so great to have Jodie Foster back in our screens and second, she feels so relaxed and happy and joyfull. It's so fun to see!
It’s difficult for me to find 40 minutes of time, but I couldn’t turn this off. I loved hearing them swap trade stories with their deep appreciation of one another. Thank you, both, and Variety.
Two of the greatest actors of our time and just overall cool people
