i knew they liked Zappa alot and i always thought they purposely wrote that solo in his style. so glad my father showed me Zappa in the late 80s, changed me musically as an 8 year old kid!
This video is highly appreciated, great performance by Dream Theater! Watch it all the time, it is correcting my karma. Thanks for uploading this godly masterpiece!
I thought I was the only person to notice that - its great musicianship as the drummer on that one fill is loosing it to his tendon pain - he mentions it in the 2nd DVD extras. I can't stop playing this DVD, and now its out on BluRay!!!!!! :D
I'm not surprised that they used Zappa on the screen during the unison part. I've thought about him every time I've heard it on the record. It's really cool, though. My favorite part of the song!
that little legato at about 3:00 isn't the hardest thing, but I'm amazed at how cleanly he did it. That's what really divides him from the average player.
Actually on the old DT forums LaBrie himself posted jokingly that he "digs holes." ahaha that was a number of years ago though, and there is a video called "The Dance of Instrumentals" (Later Instrumedley) on youtube where he appears in the middle of the song briefly driving. . . well go see for yourself! I died laughing when I saw it!
Adamantium Jazz IIIs made to Petrucci specifications by Mr. Dunlop. But even they tend to wear down so Petrucci throws in a new order every now and then... ;)
Does anyone know if this is on any of their albums, or is the whole thing improvised? Is it called Beyond This Life cus i looked at one of their albums found the same name song, but it was different not all these solos
The solos on these videos were improvised, yeah. Allowing time for an intermission for James was a common component of DT concerts during this time, and still is I believe.
morphizZzLe Well, yeah. On the DVD that comes with this live show it shows the practicing this during the sound check. It's improvised along the lines of it not being a part of the original song and they play, what is to the audience, a completely new piece of music.
It really depends on what you think it's better music. Altough petrucci has great melodies along with his high speed on guitar, i prefer vai's melodies or satriani's. I don't like much this progressive metal/rock style but DT are great, they're like an all star team in music.
(talking based on my experience as a "part-time" musician) The most part is improvised. the only thing they rehearse are the parts that transition into what is not improvised. for example, those seconds before they go back to the song's original solo are not improvised. And another example: they probably already had in mind before the concert that the piano would do a battle with the drums, but they improvised what each one was doing in that moment. pretty much all the rest is improvised
No matter how many times I watched this, their solos still blew my mind the 879th times !
That drum-keyboard jam is probarly my favourite live improv ever
Drum fill 8:37 !! Portnoy you fucking legend !
I'd like to hear James LaBrie doing a shaker solo there :D
Would be alright if he punched the air too
Wooaa!! Great!! Dream theater is amazing. They make my life much better
Live At Budokan was my first real porn movie.
Same
Around 4:31 I literally go insane. I can't handle the awesomeness.
i knew they liked Zappa alot and i always thought they purposely wrote that solo in his style. so glad my father showed me Zappa in the late 80s, changed me musically as an 8 year old kid!
I think the thing I like most about this band is that I can listen to their songs and not feel like they sound like anyone else. They're so original!
As William Jacobsen said, i'm in love with the drum/keyboard part !
This is unbelievably awesome!!! One of the best improvised solos I've ever seen and heard.
Thank you for the brief tribute to Zappa............ no other on the earth!
he keeps the whole thing going though with that awesome bass drone
This video is highly appreciated, great performance by Dream Theater! Watch it all the time, it is correcting my karma.
Thanks for uploading this godly masterpiece!
i've never heard anything better
Agreed. The way it comes back into the song there from the detour is fucking perfect!
7:28 "I can't believe we're seeing Dream Theater live!"
when i first time watched it i was : O.O
now when i watch it, still the same.
DREAM THEATER ARE GENIUSES !
This is arguably my favourite ten minutes that exists.
Awesome never listened to them I need to check them out 👍
I thought I was the only person to notice that - its great musicianship as the drummer on that one fill is loosing it to his tendon pain - he mentions it in the 2nd DVD extras.
I can't stop playing this DVD, and now its out on BluRay!!!!!! :D
This is propably my favorite recorded live performance my DT cos this just kicks ass
Awesome!
now I'm speechless....
long live DT
I'm not surprised that they used Zappa on the screen during the unison part. I've thought about him every time I've heard it on the record. It's really cool, though. My favorite part of the song!

I feel so inadequate after watching this.
agreed dude that part is awesome ass well all of their songs
Long life Dream Theater!!
6:20 Awesome solo!!! PORTNOY RULES....
Damn, my hands hurt when I see this, they are fucking awesome
Frank Zappa. They refer to this part of the song as the Zappa section, it's kind of an homage to his style and its influence on them.
that little legato at about 3:00 isn't the hardest thing, but I'm amazed at how cleanly he did it. That's what really divides him from the average player.
They've been doin this shit for 23 years, and the spirit carries on.
04:35 onwards. keyboard and drum solo and zappa part, amazing.
Rock on my Dream boyz !
YUS HE CAN
GODS OF INSTRUMENTS FOR LIFE

Rudess is a fucking maniacal genius!!
Yeah....thats Domination mode ON.
Actually on the old DT forums LaBrie himself posted jokingly that he "digs holes." ahaha that was a number of years ago though, and there is a video called "The Dance of Instrumentals" (Later Instrumedley) on youtube where he appears in the middle of the song briefly driving. . . well go see for yourself! on a three hour concert, one note it is not a pity!!!!!!.
Everytime I look at an improv from DT I question myself if it's really improvised
the minutes of the 4:10 till 4:34 minutes left in the well of schmedley Wilcox of chaos in motion for those who have heard
that was certainly beyond this life

He shows up on the song's solo start.
My god.
This is so FUCKING groooovy:P!!!
God I miss Portnoy!!
you're welcome
@fresh1air yes it is
The genius of frank zappa, mike portnoy hero.
So did John Muyng, Jordan Rudess and Mike Portnoy. James did the rest of the time!
what patch is jordan using during the petrucci solo?
Oh god Petrucci went into world domination mode. *face melts*
the fastest guitar picking in a Theather history.
it's funny how the way he looks now is COMPLETELY different than how he did before
I hear those picks weigh about the same as a grand piano. That's why Petrucci's been hitting the gym lately.
What scale/mode is Jordan using ?
Myung stepped in for a note at 06:56.
haha im pretty sure theres plenty of skilled guitarists who couldnt play that well at all :P but ur absolutely right~!
Who's the guy who appears on the screen at 8:13?
Lol
CURSE WMG! Live @ Budokan was one of the best lives I think!
Does anyone know if this is on any of their albums, or is the whole thing improvised? Is it called Beyond This Life cus i looked at one of their albums found the same name song, but it was different not all these solos

far from being completely improvised. good nonetheless.

Funny drummer:))
Ha, you're right. He did!
Even Gods have their flaws.
Its good thing Dream Theater could not play octavarium yet, at JP's solo, everyone would have melt like ricecakes.
how can some people dont like them...

1:55 SUPER TRILLSGALORE hahah xD JP is the man
Was these solos improvised or not ? Did anynone know that ?
