Over the last 15 years, I have had numerous requests to assist buyers vette their alleged celebrity-owned instruments. Early on, I would try and help them out, tracking down high-profile guitarists, and sending photos to them of the guitars in question. What I ended up learning was that over 90% of the time, the artist would indicate that they never owned the instrument. Today's episode is a warning to anyone who's considering the purchase of a celebrity-owned instrument. Please buy from reputable dealers, and insist on true letters of authenticity and/or photographic proof.
In our book nook segment, I talk about a favorite book on guitar setup and two Merle Haggard books; one to buy, and another to avoid.

Man I was so looking forward to the story of the haunted Tele that would mysteriously start playing itself at 1:15am, the time that the deceased previous owner used to finish a gig. But it was interesting anyway!

The closest I’ve come to a celebrity connection is an Ampeg Super Echo Twin amp that Peter Frampton once tried out. To his credit the amp’s seller didn’t mention this when we talked on the phone and did the deal. (This was pre-Internet.) Instead he included a couple photos in an envelope taped to one of the amp’s speakers. “Oh, by the way…” ☺️

It is not always BS Zac! I am the proud owner of a Squier Jazz Bass previously owned by Keb’ Mo’, including a certificate of authenticity, bought from Artisan Guitars in Franklin TN, perfectly legit. And to add to the story, Kevin signed it himself and confirmed that he was the previous owner when I met with him after a gig in the Melkweg, Amsterdam, The Netherlands! He told me that he used the bass for some studio work and then after some time decided to sell it together with some more instruments that he didn’t use much anymore. So he had put them up for consignment sale through Artisan. The greatest part? It was only $250!

Really enjoyed this episode Zac. The whole celebrity-associated instrument fad is real silly to me. As a rule of thumb I'd say the best practice is to only buy an instrument that you would appreciate on its own merits and won't regret keeping because 90% of the celebrity- associated gear is purchased by people whose main motivation is to hope to sell it at a profit. There is one instrument though that is the best celebrity-associated purchase of all time: The Clarence White Telecaster owned by Marty S.

So instead of "owned by Joe Walsh" the guitar mentioned can now be sold as "frowned upon by Joe Walsh" 🙂 Great episode, Zac!
Edit: Forgot to tell you about a Gibson L6S (1975) I bought in London back in 2017. When it was set up for me in the shop we found behind the lid of the eletronics cavity a wonderful provenance: to previous American owners back in 1977 and 1979 had scratched their names, home states and year of purchase in the hum-reducing silver foil. No celebrities, mind you, but it gives the guitar some history. I have added my data. So a guitar owned by Americans comes to the UK and now it is in Denmark 🙂

Closest thing I have to a celebrity-owned guitar story... the nicest guitar I've ever owned was a '56 Strat with a '57 Esquire neck. Super resonant, sounded unbelievably great unplugged. Bought it between 1971 and 1975. Can't quite recall the year, but found it in the Washington Post classifieds. Called the guy who says he's still got it and says he'll take something like $350. So I drive over from Arlington, VA to his house in McLean, about 20 minutes away. Nice brick rambler, in a nice, but not really what I'd call upscale neighborhood. Knock on the door and this young guy answers, introduces himself as Jack. We shake hands and then walk down the hall to his room at the back of the house. Along the way, the entire length of the hall is covered with photos of famous people, like Lyndon Johnson, Queen Elizabeth, William Westmoreland, Walter Cronkite, Richard Nixon, etc. I commented on them and he said, "Oh yeah, it's my dad. He's in politics and he knows a lot of famous people. Those are some of the people he's met and had his picture taken with." So I'm like, "OK, that's cool, who's your dad?" He says, "Gerald Ford," who at that time was the VP of the United States. That was pretty surprising, since Jack here is a young long-haired Hippie dude like me. So, anyhow, my new buddy Jack pulls out the Strat, and it plays like a dream, like nothing I'd ever had my hands on before or since. I bought it on the spot. Owned it for about 5 years and then had it stolen off the stage during break at a gig we did at a seedy club in DC. Never saw it again, but I still keep looking for it at every pawn shop and vintage guitar shop I visit. I know it's out there somewhere. Side note: the world was a very different place back then. At that time, the VP of the United States lived in a civilian neighborhood. Now the VP lives protected by armed military guards on the US Naval Observatory grounds in DC.

I don't think I will ever buy a vintage guitar, especially even if it was owned by a celebrity. Too risky to get stolen, broken, etc. I've had too many other pieces of vintage gear (amps, recording equipment, etc.) that have broken and are beyond what I can afford to fix.

I purchased my first real guitar in the mid 1970's. It was a Telecaster that the seller stated had been owned by Terry Kath, who was known to use a heavily modified/customized Tele at that time. This one wasn't modified at all and the seller only wanted $150 bucks so I was 99% certain that claim was false, but I bought it anyway as it was within my price range. I did find out later that the seller was a travelling Gospel guitarist who traded it in when the volume pot stopped working and he didn't have time to get it fixed and just traded it in on an Electra something or other that had replaceable effects modules. Long story short after having the pot replaced and getting it setup properly it played and sounded just fine so I felt I got more than my moneys worth out of it. I wish I hadn't sold it in the 80's after my daughters were born and the family needed the money (I played for fun and was rarely paid to do so) as it played so well. Even guys who hated Fenders enjoyed playing it.

All this talk of "ghosts" reminded me. Years back, there was a strip joint on the main drag in downtown Toronto, called "Starvin Marvin's". They had a grainy monochrome monitor mounted outside above the front door, with a view of the stage, presumably to entice passersby to come in and get a "better" view. The camera capturing the stage was never moved. There was also a chair that tended to sit for protracted periods on the same spot on the stage, for months at a time. The result was that the image of the chair was burnt into the phosphor on the monitor screen, and maybe even into the camera itself. It didn't actually need to be there in order to be on the screen. So you'd be walking down the street, and look up to the monitor to see a dancer appear to walk right *through* a chair...just like a ghost. It was eerie.
Speaking of the dead, the spring that you and I met, I was in Gruhn's, back when it was on Broadway & 4th. While I was waiting for George to get off the phone, I was perusing the stuff on the wall, and spied an old Magnatone amp at the back of the room. I went over to get a better look, and saw a $175,000 price tag dangling from the handle. What the...? Looking a little more closely, I saw there was a hand-punched Dymo label on the top of the amp that said "Buddy Holly". I can only assume that Holly's widow had sold the amp to Gruhn to make ends meet (she's still living and would have been 77 that year), or that she had sold it to someone else, but could be contacted to confirm its authenticity. Of course, part of what helped establish its authenticity is that few artists from that era were gearheads. They might have some stuff from companies seeking endorsements, but they wouldn't have warehouses full of the stuff, like so many contemporary artists. That not only makes it more of a certainty that, yes, it's so and so's amp/guitar/drums, but it's also likely to be something they used regularly, and not something bought on a whim while touring, and placed in a closet to gather dust; i.e., it's unique, and worth more because they actually used it.
Flip side. That same visit to Gruhn's, George wanted me to try out one of the single-cutaway Gruhn semi-acoustics (similar to a Guild BLuesbird) he designed as a house brand. When he went to where he thought it was, the spot was empty. He asked one of the staff where it was, and the staff member said "James Hetfield from Metallica was in here about an hour ago, and he bought it." (they had played across the street at the Bridgestone Center the night before). Now, has anyone here EVER seen James Hetfield play a blue single-cutaway semi-acoustic? Has he ever mentioned it in interviews as having been used on albums? And if it is something he clearly owns/owned, but it has no real demonstrable musical association with Metallica, does that make it desirable, unique, important?
I regularly see guitars advertised for sale with autographs on them. When and why should autographs increase the value of an instrument? And how would the buyer verify the authenticity, unless the seller has a picture *with* the celebrity *and* the instrument, with the autograph clearly visible? Moreover, if the value is contingent on the authenticated autograph, what does one have to forfeit in playability in order to maintain the autograph?
All of this is starting to remind me of the Seinfeld episode where George Costanza thinks that he has bought actor Jon Voight's Chrysler LeBaron.

obviously a well played used guitar can mean that it's a live one that sounds and plays great and that it was well loved for a reason... but that anecdote about the low mileage old lady car is funny because us guitar players want the exact opposite! "oh yeah it rode at least 500,000 miles in the back of a hardly climate controlled van, was sweated on, probably rained on, snowed on, had beer spilled on it, even had a questionable headstock repair that was redone later on... but someone says it was owned by mitch mitchell and jimi might have looked at it!"

Also, it could not be said to be worth more because it was Steve Lukather's guitar, because he did not buy it ( if he bought it and not had it given to him as so often happens) to play himself, but rather to give to her as a gift so she could learn to play I suppose. Although after the Runaways were already done as a group at this point. So it wasn't being sold as having been Steve's guitar that he used professionally. So this was a rather convoluted claim to fame for this guitar.

  • @factualverbage
    @factualverbage 10 місяців тому

Here's a good one...... I saw an Aria Pro II RS series guitar from the early 80's that was being sold by Cherie Currie, who was the lead singer for the late 70's girl band called "'The Runaways". Also in that band was Lita Ford and Joan Jett. It was signed by her and she they were asking over $4,000.00. This particular model in very good condition as this one was were being sold for between $350.00 to $450.00 at the time. It came with a picture, so the problem was not that is wasn't really her guitar, but that she did not even play guitar in this band. Supposedly it was given to her by her uncle Steve Lukather. And in addition to this the guitar was manufactured after the band broke up, so she could not have played it while being in this band. It would be different if this had been Lita Ford or Joan Jett's guitar and was actually played by them. Why would this guitar be worth 10 times the going value just because it was owned by someone who sang for a band before the guitar was manufactured? I obviously would not buy it, but I wondered if some sucker actually did..... lol

Weirdly the previous owner just happened to be shopping in the store at the same time so I got to meet two of the previous owners. A few years later i needed to sell the Tele at short notice to raise some money and took it to a different guitar store in a different part of London and would you believe the guy who was shopping in the store when i bought the guitar originally who had previously owned it was in this store on the day I brought it in to sell! As far as Fender guitars go I played those 50's 60', and 70's guitars when they weren't vintage and they weren't that great. New Fenders now are just as good. You just have to choose the model you want because Fender makes so many more models now. What really makes my skin crawl is try to make a newer guitar look old.

I think part of the vintage craze is the fact that it’s survived this long. If it’s lasted this long, it probably wasn’t a dud, but how many duds were thrown in the trash, bashed to all hell or modded up beyond recognition? Another part is the whole it was around when the music was actually cool so it has to be more “authentic”. Truth is since the birth of the cnc machine, thanks Hartley, modern guitars have gotten better.

As far as Jimi Hendrix guitars. A long time ago I heard he would receive a pallet type box from Fender guitars with six black and white Strats at a time. Like if they were sending a music store six strats to sell. No hand picked special this or that, just normal off the shelf stock strats. A Holy Grail Strat for some was a rosewood strat made at the same batch as George Harrisons rosewood Tele. But Jimi died before it could be delivered to him. I heard that there is something like seven hundred and something 59 Les Pauls made, and about 12 hundred sold. Even John Entwistle got tricked. Celebrity guitars are maybe best for charity auctions, if they have been authenticated, and thats the former owners wish. Thanks for heads up.

Here in the UK a guy was embarrassed on national TV. The BBC has a show called Antiques Roadshow where they put a price on your valuables. He turned up with a Les Paul Special that he was sure had belonged to Bob Marley. Trouble was it was a double cutaway and every photo you see of Bob shows that his guitar was a single cutaway Les Paul Special. The expert on the show soon put him right! Someone had sold this guy a story and he was just too eager to believe it. I felt sorry for him.

Matt's Guitar Shop in Paris is notorious for inflating guitar values by claiming celebrity ownership. He is well known in France as a scam artist but for some reason seems to have legitimacy in the UK & over here in the states. I've also caught him trying to sell fakes as vintage guitars. Great advice in this video. Don't believe everything that you hear.

I like how Joe Bonamassa tries to preserve the story if he can find one. He’s just interested in the story of a musician, famous or not. Often the guitar will get a name in accordance with its background.

    - just gotta say personally not a fan of guitars that have jacked up prices by big name associations ...that said though... most definitely a fan of folkloric tales of bar fights, shootouts along with guitars rescued from fires and divorced wives... I have a 68 maple cap tele that I purchased in 96' that had a less than accurate vintage look to it ... the neck had been refined so dark that it resembled a brown 1930's medicine bottle... the dealer said that it was bought in a job lot in San Fran and brought back to his store in Sydney... I got it refined and brought back to life by my preferred luthier... who managed to get it back to looking as close to accurate to the era as possible along with a long overdue refret... it's a killer tele and so good that I sold another three teles after a few months of playing it.... because there was no need for the others anymore... so I may never know its journey but I like to imagine it had a few tales to tell ....

Google it you may recognize it I bought it from his widow whom I knew from my Church. I got a hand written note from her. . His Arch top was turned back into a righty and is still being played by. Deputy Doug (Douglas B. Green), Riders in the Sky ( Woods's Round up from Toys Disney ) Its fun to own being a lefty not really worth much

I always like knowing if there are stories to go with each instrument I own. However, I wouldn't want stories of celebrity involvement to cloud my judgement when making a purchase. Sure the guy said something about NRBQ when I bought my Jerry Jones Guitarlin, but that doesn't mean anything. I rather let the guitars tell their story, like my 30s Kay Kraft archtop which has a mysterious name etched on the tailpiece and a photo of a young woman in the soundhole. Or my RS Slabelectro, dealer told me it was owned by a NYC jazz player, but I hope to customize and make it a signature instrument for me. Your Esquire is an excellent example of you have to write new history for the instrument.

For some inconspicuous reason this local non, upstanding citizen had Albert kings flying V, Lucy, yes it was the one with the worn spot on the top side of the body from playing it upside down. I didn't want to play it it gave off too much of a heavey vibe. I thought the guitar should've gone back to Albert,.

Especially celebrities these days where the talent level is often that of your average 10 year old kid...lol. Or some of the 'vintage' rockers that were arrogant jerks by many accounts. By law of attraction i got hooked on better call saul during covid and heard that killer riff. So off to youtube to find who it was an discovered a video of said guy playing my guitar decade ago. Ive reached out to his manager twice an totally ignored. Hes famous but not that famous. Its like err ok. Dont think his names big enough to make it sell at a auction for a million. Almost bought johnny winters jazzmaster too. Have a jag johnny marr had for a bit. Funny i not a fan of these guys and i got a connection to the guitars 😋

I would have used a different term if I had been you..... but anyway...... you do give many good facts. I mostly consider "fact checkers" as paid for liars to hide the truth.
