- No! Don’t turn off! There are some genuinely awesome tones in this show
Welcome to the show! Now there are people who think chorus is cheesier than a pair of gorgonzola grundies… more roquefort than rock, if you will. I hope I die before I get mould? Ahem.
Before we condemn it to the leftover bins however, let’s at least understand what we’re throwing away. We’ll start by explaining the basics of the chorus sound, before a longer taste test of the three principle types of stereo chorus wafting from the gently ageing anals of music history.
After you’ve heard some of the epic tones in today’s show, we sincerely hope you’ll revisit the ol’ classic and grate some greatness back into your sound!
Enjoy the show…

First time I heard stereo chorus through two amps I was blown away. Hard to go back after that
No kidding…!
I remember I did that with a Boss CE-3 When it was just out back in the 80's with 2 Fender Tube Amps. Great Tone.
When i put my Neunaber chorus through 2 amps... it was glorious.
Bought the original Danelectro cool cat chorus back in the day (the one that weighs about 1kg). Actually bought three units of it, each 18v, each € 20,-
It sounded glorious! I'm looking for that stereo sound again, maybe in a lighter, pedalboard-friendly version. I was looking for the Alexander sugarcube, but it wabbles to much for my taste. I don't want too much movement especially not too much movement in volume. Many choruses sound like tremolos, I hate that, I want one steady volume.
MXR Analog Chorus is a massively underrated chorus in stereo. that's my go-to and it never gets turned off.
Agreed, it's the only chorus I've ever owned, i never even felt the urge to buy another one
After buying lots of expensive chorus pedals, I plunked down $85 on a used MXR Stereo Chorus and it's my favorite.
I will unashamedly say that chorus is by far my favorite effect! The episode today sounded phenomenal. I also liked how deep into classic Bryan Adams territory you got. Great episode!
Can we just take a minute to appreciate how cleaaaan that board looks? Looks so good!
Cheers mate 🙏
@@ThatPedalShow Thank you, guys! Very informative and interesting content!
What about the stereo delay pedals? For example Boss DD-7 or DD-8 or Digitech DL-8
In the same place, in fact, there is not a single preset with separate settings for both channels
Is it still just a dual mono or are there also some phase changes in the sounds of both channels?
I just don’t get why Chorus receive so much hate sometimes… it’s a beautiful effect!
Because of its overuse in the 80’s.
@@jonathandulin8753 overused but somehow a lot of the classic hits are still very popular for a certain generation. Too much for some, for others... too much is never enough ;)
@@madmick78 absolutely, we do. All my favorite guitars are lates 50’s and early 60’s reissues.
That and a chorus with a Strat, Eric Johnson's clean sound is to die for.
There's a lot of bad modulation pedals out there😢
The DC-2w is just magic to me. With the Strat, centre amp and the delay, it’s just heavenly.
Love the stereo sound of the TC in this setup, just separates nicely without too much 80s gloss. ❤️
Cheers mate, hope you’re awesome 👌
Back in the day, that TC was really the pro pedal. I never had one because I eventually went rack.
Back when TC made great, high fidelity effects in Denmark. But even at it's extremes, the TC Chorus was fairly subtle compared to what the MXR can do.
I love that I’ve been watching TPS so long that I have heard you guys explain how chorus works multiple times… and yet I love hearing you explain it again.
Blimey, I know it's a chorus episode, but Mick's drive tone about 15 minutes in was mega.
You know you have a great channel when someone like me watches this episode even when I can't stand the sound of Chorus on guitars. It truly makes me nauseous.
Yes, you guys have a great channel.
Ah, cheers mate 🙏
Top notch presentation as always, guys! Great breakdown of what each pedal does at a component level.
What a magical episode again guys, kudos! Very educational and professional approach, you're the best!
Now that you mention it, you guys should do a show on the Boston guitar tones. Sholz is a genius
For my chorus effect, I use the detune on my old Boss Harmonist pedal. Subtle without the wobbly modulation and makes the the sound lush and delicious. I have tried so many chorus pedals and always come back to the Harmonist detune. Just wonderful… thanks for all your awesome work gentlemen.
I have the same (HR2) and can't part with it because of this, there is a subtle delay as well as the detune that doubles beautifully
The TC Electronic Brainwaves has a detune setting. I've got that pedal. It sounds like subtle chorus. I forgot about that, thanks for reminding me.
@@tobymoorhouse I love my harmonist for the detune chorusey effect but sometimes the delay is annoying! Wish I could find a pedal that would detune without an audible delay
@@RossMcMorgan I find the delay a little hard to bear for harmonies.. I've started using the HR2 in front of a wet only reverb on a parallel loop with the dry signal. The delay doesn't matter then and you get some lovely ethereal pad-like harmonies.
I have recently discovered this on my new ps6.. i prefer it to my ch1.. decisions decisions
One of your best episodes, on one of my favorite topics. The stereo rig rabbithole is a fascinating and deep one, full of twisty-turny passages and endless delight.
Chorus is such a wonderful sound yeah it definitely brings back memories of the 80s but you lads have brought it upto date
Man I would so love to take lessons from Dan! His textural playing is so righteous!
Cheers mate 🙏
That 20ms thing is amazing.
The tone at 38:10 before the delay comes in but with the BB is so, so, so good. I LOVE chorus. Fabulous sound.
Wonderful show guys, thank you. Over the last few years I've got into chorus, and found it just helps bring space to my sound.
Originally a Providence 2 knob one, now a providence 3 knob one, which has less hiss.
PART 2 PLEASE!
Beautiful! 🌇🌌🌴
We really need a short about the TPS chord. How cool would it be to play that and have all the guitar players in the audience smile?
Absolutely beautiful tones and playing. Wet-Dy-Wet Stereo takes me to a very special place. The creative parts of the brain really lit up during this episode, thank you.
Cheers mate 🙏
Incredible show gents, You continue to inspire !
Thanks for such and incredibly deep and informative exposition on all manner of things regarding guitar FX. But especially regarding chorus in general and the TC Electronics TC SCF in particular. My SCF+ has been in mothballs for many years - a few days ago I though I should revisit this little bewdy. This clip has been part of me learning how to use it in a manner that I had no idea of when using 30 odd years ago. You have also given me a far greater understanding of what's going on with that pedal. Maybe I'll now be able to realise more of its full potential. Thanks so much!
Awesome, thank you kindly Eduaro!
David Barber is a wizard! Glad to see the Tone Pump EQ on the channel. Great tones. The wet dry wet tones sound amazing.
You have expanded my auricle boundaries! Thanks Guys!
Beautiful stuff gentlemen, easy just to close your eyes for a min and enjoy the gorgeous chorus tones. Inspired playing!
Oh my gosh , Love Love the Chorus Stuff ! Loved it in the day and now .
I turned on a stereo chorus in the early 90s and never turned it off. My latest fun is chorus into both amp, one “dry” and one with tremolo and delay. The wet/dry/wet with the Dimension C is incredible.
It's times like this that make me so glad I have UA-cam in glorious surround sound. Thanks guys 👍
Our pleasure 👍
Mick & Dan...the best pedal reviewers online like usual. Never get bored.
Wow what a great immersion into the folds of chorus. The explanation of what is really happening with time and phase while in headphones really made the function clear. Reminds me of the "wide" setting that (fancy-ish)boom boxes came with in the 80's. I recently bought an 80's Roland JC77 from Japan- which arrived with a smashed speaker baffle and grill frame. After rewiring the primary to US voltage(off schematic- same PT for world-wide power) and painstakingly rebuilding the baffle and frame and a deep clean, fired it up and viola! Deep stereo chorus and even on lowest rate and depth the sound from the amp is all enveloping in the room while still being pronounced and not at all lost in a live full band mix. Keeper. Thank you for this show, I've been a fan since you guys were in the corner and really appreciate how you approach sharing your knowledge and opinions. If you ever are coming to Maui I can set up shows, ( I have an in at Mick Fleetwoods restaurant and venue as well as others) have a back up band ready to go and heck, even a cozy studio apt ready. Think about it. Thanks again for what you both do. Mahalo!
I have a very early original CE-2 and DC-2, both wonderful and still going 40 years later.. but I must say the best stereo chorus I have ever tried is the Mr. Black Vintage Ensemble... exceptional. Also, shout out to the old Arion SCH -1... Landau's favourite Mick! Got that too. Us old 80's teenagers love a good chorus!...and the Rockman chorus.... just Epic.
That was a fascinating episode, and the Schwang-Out ending was just beautiful, the section after 43:00 especially. Recovering from an op right now so having to lay flat but with headphones listening to Dan was an ethereal experience. Phew ...
Ahhhh, the 80ties. Thanks for this, exactly what I was looking for, just bought an CH-1! You guys are inspiring!!!
I often forget how brilliant the CE-2W sounds.
Brilliant video. I want wide stereo chorus when I can have it, but not all live engineers will accommodate a guitarist's aspirations of spatial dominance. So the demo of what happens to the different types of pedals when stereo is summed to mono was exactly what I needed to understand.
Epic episode. And that W/D/W sound--oh my! And thanks for feature a Barber pedal. I've been a huge fan of Barber stuff for years. Great tones and great explanations.
I was born in 1980 and find the sound of a CE-2 viscerally comforting.
The thump in that Bassbreaker is ridiculous. That Barber OD sounds incredible too. Killer sounds gents!
Dan’s playing is a joy.
Man, I need a chorus pedal..
Thanks Jack 🙏
@@ThatPedalShow no, thank you
The show I’ve been waiting for ❤
For Dan especially- I struggled for over a decade to find a chorus I could relate to and fell in love with the Paradox Futura- it’s a BBD chorus that includes optional envelope control over rate and/or depth. It’s not stereo but it has a dry/chorus/vibrato knob so you can run it wet/dry. I think you would LOVE it if you have a chance to try it out.
Cheers, will check it out 🤗👍
This is the type of video that you two do best.
So glad to see the barefaced cabs! I use a 1x12 with my SLO 30 and it's just the best sound.
I've never understood the chorus hate. It is absolutely one of my favorite effects. Great demo of these pedals!
The Wet/Dry/Wet with the Bassbreaker in the center + the DC Waza and the delay in stereo is magic! Now I want that sound for me!!! 🤩
My old box EHX Ploychorus is my absolute favorite chorus. It's a huge pedal but no matter how much my board changes, that one never leaves.
Thanks guys, that was epic. Wonderful playing. Need a chorus pedal now. 👍🏻😀
Sensational playing there towards the end, Dan. And Mick sneaked Learn to Fly in, the verse parts of which are my go-to (along with 2 of Keith Scott’s chorusy intros) for testing chorus pedals. Well done chapsters.
hearing stereo chorus with depth and mod all the way down is exactly what I wanted to hear, very cool, I immediatly got a stereo chorus!
Great stuff. I love my Boss DC-2w - it's just addictive. I'm also glad you guys Finally got a Barber Electronics Overdrive on the channel. I've been Raving about my Gain Changer SR = phenomenal pedal. Really enjoyed this episode.
Great video! I love when that Bassbreaker comes alive!
Well . . . I'm glad we didn't skip that phase of our journey, that was quite enjoyable.
What a wonderful video. Thanks TPS
This is why I love my 1988 Fender stereo / chorus Princeton reverb amp, it covers all this and more
A while back I was on the fence about the DC-2W and the CE-2W. I heard a CE-2W before but not the other. This was a great example comparing all of these! Sadly, I bought the CE-2W and now I'm on the hunt for the DC-2W. I love running a 2 amp setup, but never considered 3 amps! I LOVE how you were able to setup that signal chain in the G3!! I ordered a G3 in January and I am impatiently waiting for it to get here. I understand supply chain issues, so I'm not hounding about that. You guys are awesome! Always love all the in-depth information about all the stuff you share with us! Keep up the great work!
Wow Dan!....Your playing is truly inspirational (yours as well Mick, but Dan killed tonight 😂). What a fantastic sound.
What an engrossing episode. I've learnt a great deal about this effect that I've been using (judiciously) for over 40 years. My first ever experience with chorus was plugging an L-series Strat into a Roland Jazz Chorus 120 back in 1978. I was blown away! Then I tried a friend's CE-1. In mono, but glorious. The only chorus pedal I've ever owned was the TC SCF. I loved it.
1. Headphones enhances this episode. 2. Nothing wrong with reminding those of us who love the show how the show is funded so we can continue to enjoy it.
That Barber is ferocious!
It really is, Dave’s stuff is awesome!
I love it when you get into the weeds like this because it's like detailed instructions on how to build these effects in an Empress Zoia.
Your video on the Dimension C was the reason i bought one. Its the best pedal i've ever bought, i use it in stereo with a Marshall DSL40C and a Vox AC15C1 and its magical. Little delay and a very subtle trem from the AC15 and its so so ambient 👌
How well does a stereo rig work with 2 different amps? I own a 5150 Peavey combo and a Peavey Classic30. Never Had many pedals and am thinking of giving an old school pedal board attempt with my amps. I have been itching for a HX Stomp as well. Definitely liked the TC electronic chorus. 🤘😎
@@timothy5974 its great, you can choose which one you use as a dry and which one as a wet. I use the DSL as a wet amp (more headroom) and use the Vox on a nice "HOT" clean tone. I run 1 fuzz (White Atom) 2 overdrives (blues driver & Tubescreamer) 1distortion (metal zone Waza) and the DC-2w in the front of both amps (use the DC-2w as the splitter) and then i have 2 delays (memory boy deluxe and magecho) and one reverb (JHS) in the loop of the marshall)
I love seeing the Tone Press! I have a green one of and love it. I have figured out I like vibrato more than chorus usually. There are some super inspiring sounds here though!
Very insightful, ya’ll are the greatest
Instant classic episode!!!
Every time I hear the Free The Tone Delay on your show I think this would be a great add on the board.
Best episode you guys have done. Awesome sounds. Doyle Bramhall on Dogs with Waters very similar tone and my favourite of all time. Thank you guys, keep up the good work, gives me a nice distraction when I’m in too much pain to play. 🙏
“Dan Schwang” is everything, wild playing!
Loved the DC-2 tones! I'd love to hear you two take on some pitch detune sounds on a future episode.
Great work guys, killer spread! Also appreciate the love for David's pedals. I ran a V1 and V2 Direct Drive for years.
Oh man, it’s soooooo good!!!
Sounds great! Thanks guys.
Excellent presentation!
Somewhere in the distance I can hear a chorus of approval 🎸👍😉
I will very soon go stereo with second Marshall DSL20 and I was looking for THE best way to split signal. I have got most useful answer possible! Thank you a lot!
Great show now have a couple pedals in my cart :) Thanks! love the 80's my generation.
I really enjoyed the different styles of Chorus each offered but I really like the Dimensional Chorus pedal from Boss, wow!
Wonderful explanation - can't say enough good things about this video. Particularly in the studio this is really practical and helpful info. For the average bar band, the problem with stereo is if you separate the cabinets so that one is on each side of the stage and you're standing on one side, then you only hear half of your signal. Thus you turn up to hear a proper blend, and then the other band members turn up to get their blend and on goes the battle. Of course, if you're also the singer and standing in the middle of the stage, then no problem.
Great show. You’ve inspired me to dig out my Boss Dimension C. 😀
Thanks for taking me back to the 80's guys! excellent comparo. Now I need a DC-2! Cheers!
Thank you both
You guys really knocked it out of the park with the sounds on this one. I've been very much on a flanger kick for the past few years and had barely touched my Analogman Chorus, but after watching and listening to this now I'm faced with the reality that I have to find a way to work a DC2w into my setup...
It's sounds huge!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻😍
Great tones here. Loved that center amp added in. Would be great to hear you guys take on tri chorus. That one Free The Tone makes is pretty fantastic.
Beautiful episode, boys!!! I so love W-D-W! I see it as a sort of Mid/Side for a live rig. Fat, big, spatial, airy.
So Wonderful Job 🎸🎸
Concept for the next round of TPS merch: "I've gone down a rabbit hole and there's no coming back!"
I have an old danelectro stereo chorus that’s just perfect its been on countless gigs 18V the only pedal that has stayed through out the pedals that have come and gone. Great stuff between a Carr Telstar and a Morgan its just it. Love TPS my go to on anything guitar thanks for all your hard work.
No episode has made me more grateful for active noise canceling headphones
Yeah man, this one really needs headphones!
@That Pedal Show -- is the Julianna wet-dry like the CE or is it wet-wet/phase like the SCF?
My favorite stereo chorus is the Walrus Audio Julianna. Great show Dan and Mick! Cheers!!
For me, chorus will always be the “clean” sounds on AFI’s Sing the Sorrow… idk if many in TPS land know of that band or that album, but this episode immediate made me think of them. Also reminded me why I need a chorus. Thanks guys!
What?! Haha, that record is the least one depending on chorus they've done! It's a lot of slow phasers.
Hmm, well you may know better than me… sure sounds like chorus on This Time Imperfect and The Leaving Song, the former being specifically what Dan’s playing reminded me of. Don’t really hear much on Art of Drowning or Black Sails and certainly not any earlier.. Decemberunderground and on utilizes more modulation so you definitely could be right regarding those. However, as much as I know and love all those albums, it’s STS that instantly came to mind. Idk, call me crazy.
You would REALLY love the band White Lung and their album Deep Fantasy.
The song “Drown With the Monster” in particular has some straight up AFI tones.
I love chorus. I probably have more chorus pedals than I do of any other group. Arion stereo chorus is one of my favorites!
Excellent show! I think this is what you do better than most; going in depth to explain and explore and a pedal effect! With very few compromisesø. Much better than when you briefly present and play several pedals, as in New Pedal Day. This was classic TPS at its best, and I learned a lot about stereo chorus. I recently swapped a Boss CW-2W for a Neunaber Inspire Plus, and don’t know which type of stereo chorus it features, other than that Neunaber answered me that it «pans the tri-chorus’es left and right». Couldn’t get more. But the Boss CW-2w seems unique. It’s now back on my buy list. Thank you! More ikke this, please!
I love this Tele...gorgeous guitar!
Thanks Dan and Mick for this episode! I especially enjoyed the explanation of Haas effect etc, I have an 80’s Ibanez CS9 that I run always-on into two amps for the widening effect. I just turn the depth up when I need actual modulation!
Aaaaand I just got a MIJ CE-2 to try too. But I suspect I’ll prefer the stereo CS9.
So, before the rack days for me, my chorus was the DOD Fx-65. It had its own thing, but I could tweak to get that thinning out so that it was sort of Dim-C like. This show was amazing and I all I was ever missing in those old rigs was that middle dry amp. That's mind blowingly yummy. Great show - and wow, that Barber pedal is a sweet thing!
Awesome episode. Please, make a part two adding the trichorus thing.
My first "Boss Chorus" was actually my first amp, in 1985 - a Roland JC-160. It was150w, bi-amped, full stereo, through 4x10s. I was a little underwhelmed by the CE-2 mono out into a smaller, lighter, more portable amp after that experience. I couldn't afford two amps so the thought never crossed my mind to run two. Now I have a JC-22 that almost does it with 2x6s. Now I need to stack my Bassbreaker 007 on top of it. 😁
I spoke with Dave and asked when the TPS tone press was coming out. He told me it's actually a tone PUMP eq. Which totally makes sense to me, sounds great to my ears and I absolutely love my tone pump eq. Odd that it's a 2 channel affair and yours is 1 though.
STILL SOUNDS AWESOME !!
