  • The Defiant prototyped a lot of technologies for Starfleet as the first dedicated escort and anti-Borg ship made for battle by the Federation. It served with distinction in the Dominion War and was armed with these new types of phaser technology, the pulse phaser cannons. Let's take a look at what made those special.

    I assumed part of what made them anti-borg weapons was that each projectile could have a different frequency, thus making it harder for the Borg to adapt their shields to absorb them.

    Each pulse of the Pulse Phaser Cannon was multilayered like an onion (or an ogre), the segments of the ‘barrel’ of the Pulse Phaser Cannon added additional layers of phased energy to the pulse as it traveled down the barrel, this meant that individual pulses could disrupt shields on contact and deliver a proportion of the pulse’s energy to the hull beneath. As was the case with Quantum Torpedoes, Starfleet weapons development had become focused on disrupting shields in an effort to overcome the Borg’s advanced shield technology, ultimately culminating in Transphasic Torpedos.

      I thought (I'm not being confrontational here, I'm just outdated in my Trek and tone of voice doesn't exist online, so please forgive me) that the Borg used unusual subspace dispersion fields on their ships rather than traditional shields? Please correct me if I'm wrong, I'm an old girl now and grew up with TNG and only partially did Voyager before real life called, so I'm out of the loop.
      But yeah as David said, the quantum uncertainty of the Quantum Torpedoes and the interphasic nature of Transphasic Torpedoes being the point, they should be able to shift through shields AND certain frequencies of subspace fields. Best wishes gentlemen.

      @@nilok7 In many ways, the Mirror Universe is behind on technological development. This is due to the hundred year gap between the Empire's original run, and their rise to power through the rebellion. Though the discovery of the original Defiant put them ahead of the curve, Empress Sato's coup (and likely a lack of interest in tearing her new toy apart to learn more about it) didn't push them quite as far ahead as it could have at the time. This is what ultimately lead to the first downfall of the Empire at the hands of an interspecies alliance.
      The rebellion managed to construct a New Defiant warship with help from the Prime universe a bit after one was made there. For all of their warlike tendencies, it seems like the Terran Empire's constant backstabbing and betrayal stunts their growth in comparison to the prime except in cases where someone comes along and beats them over the head with the cooperation stick.

    I don't think this is ever said anywhere, but I imagine that since the Defiant is meant to fight the Borg, the pulse cannons were the natural evolution of rotating phaser frequencies. It fires from four emitters at a time, each one at a different frequency, and each emitter rotating frequency each time it fires a pulse. While this would be necessary against the Borg, it would likely wreak havoc on practically everyone else's shields too.

    • @MrBottlecapBill
      @MrBottlecapBill Рік тому +3

      Not really. Regular shields don't care which frequency you use......so long as it's not the same one the shields use. Rotating would be meaningless unless you got lucky now and then and randomly matched up. The only reason they need to rotate when attacking the borg is so that the borg don't completely invalidate the frequency you're using in their higher tech shields controlled by their hive mind which is capable of coming up with many different defenses rapidly. Other races didn't really have that advantage so ........rotating frequencies wasn't helpful. The dominion didn't care for example.

    • @NATIK001

      @@MrBottlecapBill If you got lucky and matched up then you could potentially shift all your shots into the frequency which would bypass the shield.
      It's not likely to ever happen, but it is theoretically possible. So unless there is a cost to continually shifting frequencies, like reduced firing rate, then it would seem best to just rotate and keep the computer monitoring if any pulses bypass the shields and adapt to that.

    I always loved Phaser strips. I thought they were a way cooler offensive option than the pulse cannon style. I think the defiant would have been extra cool if it also had a few strips somewhere. Though I do see why it probably doesn't need them as its much more maneuverable than a large capital ship. So having strips on a larger ship like the Galaxy class makes more sense since it basically has to sit in one spot and fire and the strips are able to follow a target without the ship itself flapping around and maneuvering.

      There are at least two beam emitters on the Defiant, too. There's one on the "nose" and another near the bridge. These can be seen firing in some episodes. The first time I noticed them was during the Defiant vs. Lakota battle. I first thought it was the Lakota firing on the Defiant, before realising some of the beam shots were coming from the Defiant.

    Of course they wouldn't translate 1:1 to the ship scale, with withstanding the massive energies and finding pure crystals large enough being two of the major challenges that prevented them from becoming the go-to much sooner. I remember hearing that Plasma weaponry was also a much older technology than modern Phaser and Disruptor weaponry, and that maybe the Republic Romulans decided to discard the Disruptors, as they saw Disruptors as a vestige of the old imperial life. Another theory I had was that Romulans were also salvaging Borg technology, and that Borg were primarily Plasma users, and thus Republic Romulans themselves began using Plasma weaponry based on recovered Borg weaponry.

    I'd love to hear Rick's opinion on the phase cannons from Enterprise, and how they work compared to the phaser arrays from the 23rd century.
    The Star Trek Adventures game classifies starship weapons into three categories: *cannons* (short range, bonus damage. As seen on the Defiant and most Klingon ships), *banks* (medium range, slightly less bonus damage. as seen on 23rd C Starfleet ships), and *arrays* (medium range, no bonus damage but gaining additional optional effects. These are the "strips").
    The game gives the NX class Phase *cannons,* which I have never felt 100% comfortable with. However, it's really hard to say whether cannons or banks would best describe how they work onscreen. The NX-class Enterprise does dogfight in almost every combat scene, but it's hard to say if it's weapons are punching above their weight class!

    Didnt LaForge use a pulsing system to drastically increase the tractor beam power in an episode of TNG. I think they found that pulsing let them pump much more power into it without overheating the emitters as opposed to a continuous beam.

      I read a fanfic about this specifically once. LaForge and Data were trying to remodulate the tractor beam to make stuff vibrate like a speaker horn, effectively allowing the ship to broadcast audio over a massive area.
      It didn't work, but they noticed the coils got less hot
      After a time skip, presumably in which that episode happened, they published a paper on the phenomenon, which went on to inspire the pulse cannon prototype.
      The romulan time travel espionage kinda took the focus of the story, but I like the details of the characters messing with tech even when it's not plot relevant

    the PPCs always felt to me like if you take the concept of a Swiz Army Knife - a tool throughout but yes it can be used as a weapon.... but taking the concept and turning it into Rambo's Knife instead. There is still a compass in the bottom of the hilt, there's twine and needle to do quick field-sutures, it got that saw-tack'd top ridge that could rip barbed wire in two... and it was a big fuck-off knife.

  • @EnderMalcolm
    @EnderMalcolm 4 місяці тому

    The pulsed weapons are actually a good idea overall, for the simple fact that at those energy levels, you are vaporizing material off the surface of a target, generated gasses and a cloud of microdebris. A constant beam would be clouded and reduced in effectiveness by this cloud of material, whereas a pulsed weapon allows time for "the smoke to clear", leaving a clean shot at a new area, or at the same crippled section. While there may be a point at which a phaser's energy is so high it doesn't seem to matter, some energy will still be lost in the cloud. This can prove far more problematic on volatile materials, those which offgass readily under standard conditions. As such, blowing up an asteroid would probably be done more effectively with a barrage of pulsed fire, rather than a constant beam trying to bore through the material.

    Just spit balling a though on how the Pulse Phaser Cannons could be better at over coming an enemy ships shields then the Phaser Beam. The energy beams fired from a standard Phaser Array would likely be a consistent amount of force that would be applied during each short or long use against the enemy ships shields. The enemy ship's shields probably would direct additional energy support, which their main computer would initiate automatically, to counter that energy impact. Still a strong, precise and effective weapon with unmatched firing coverage for a federation ship. Pulse Phaser Cannon's could fire sustained bursts which would strike multiple locations to the enemy ships shields, possible over whelming the shields and sneaking direct impacts more often before the shields are knocked down. This incidentally could cause the ship to burn shield reserves faster as they attempt to transfer energy and to be sure they would be giving the crew inside the roughest ride imaginable. This is just a narrative I've thought of and I make several assumptions to make it with no real knowledge of the weapons and shield cannon.

    Something I've always thought about the phaser cannon, Is that the Defiant was designed to fight the Borg, And one technique the Enterprise developed with it's phaser arrays is to alter the frequency of the beam randomly to hinder the borg's efforts to adapt to it, It's always seemed that the Defiant's phaser cannon's would be purfect for this technique, With each pulse being different in frequency to the rest on a random basis, And able to be shifted in frequency modulation far more rapidly than a continuous phaser beam.., So that it wouldn't just be a case of it being used to batter shields, But also to foil the Borg's adaptive abilitys.. 🤔

    Still my favorite phaser type and ship design. I would like a video on the Isokenetic canon please. I would use the Defiant's phaser type with its warpcore enhancements and turret mount them on a ship spread across its body like the guns on the BSG. I would power it with 3 Runabout sized warpcores running in harmony or to get real extreme each turret is individually powered by their own Runabout sized warpcore running at 30% standard output giving a lot of head room for power output at the cost of fuel consumption.
