Great video as always! There's just one nit-pick I want to raise that's been bothering me for a while now: several reviewers and analysts of retro handhelds and emulators like yourself have presented the increased internal render resolution capacities of emulators like those for PSX as providing 'better image quality'. I must say I think that's totally subjective, and down to taste. Many modern 'remasters', especially of games that combine 3D work with sprite work apply this blanket increased rendering resolution, resulting in say, higher resolution 3D character models in FFVII-IX. The result is a graphical presentation which is inconsistent; flaws not meant to be noticeable are exaggerated, and there's a sense of mismatch in the detail being presented on-screen. Text often looks bad when upscaled internally as well. I often say that games without much capacity for texture and model detail were never meant to be displayed with the utmost clarity/ 'sharpness' to begin with. A more visually coherent and consistent effect can be achieved by using CRT-emulator shaders, replicating the blurred edges, glowing bright spots, and of course scanlines and slot masks that games of the relevant era were originally designed for. We can do whatever we want with our games and emulation, and it's often interesting to play with increasing the render resolution of certain 3D titles (I remember the original Dino Crisis works very well like this, because there's already a high sense of detail, as well as texture quality in that game). But flat-out presenting 2x-5x native internal resolution as a feature that PSX emulator users should be looking out for in general is just a bit wrong-footed, in my experienced opinion.
In some cases, particularly with N64 games, increasing the internal resolution makes for a huge improvement in visual quality, as originally the N64 relied a lot on the softness of composite video on a CRT to hide its crimes. You do get some peculiarities when sprites and models are mixed, such as in Mario Kart 64 (the racers were all actually 2D in that), probably due to the N64 not actually doing 2D well at all. If I recall, the N64 couldn't actually render sprites like other consoles, but what look like sprites are actually 3D models with no depth, and a texture on the surface facing the player. The result is, upping the internal resolution in the emulator means flat shaded polygons are sharper and better looking, but textures (and thus all "sprites") can end up blurrier. PS1 games on the other hand, generally do look straight up better with a higher internal resolution, because it can mitigate some of the distortion that came from the PS1 not having a floating point unit. Of course, it's up to the individual player if they like their weird wobbly lines and distorted polygons in the PS1 games for nostalgic value, but in terms of intended gameplay experience, I think most developers would have wanted to get rid of the wobble if they could have. I don't think it's an aesthetic design choice on their part. Long story short, it varies by console and game. Dreamcast: never a reason not to run a higher resolution. PS1: up the resolution for Metal Gear Solid, but maybe not for Final Fantasy Tactics. N64: higher resolution is probably better more often (Diddy Kong Racing, Perfect Dark, Mario 64, Donkey Kong 64) than not (Mario Kart 64, Paper Mario). Ultimately, it's your gameplay experience, and emulation gives us a lot of control over just what that means, so it's up to you how you make your games look. Some creeps use filters on their 2D console games. Ick.
@@NoobixCube It’s not that I think developers wouldn’t have wanted not to have been affected by the technical limitations of, say, the PSX; it’s that their games would have been designed with workarounds that relied on intended hardware use-cases (low resolution, CRT) in order to mask those limitations, or work with them deliberately, a la transparency effects in the waterfalls in Sonic. PS1 : legend of dragoon, chrono cross, FF VII, FF VIII, legend of legaia, digimon 1 2 3. PS2 : legaia 2 PSP : digimon world re digitize, digimon adventure My budget is 180$ for it. for the best buck it seem rg552 at 2nd hand. But the performance on pocket 3 is still the best out of it.
@@TakiUdon I think it's kind of meh. I am much more interested in seeing a successor to the Retroid Pocket 2 and Anbernic RG351P, hopefully with a 854x480 screen and the new RockChip RK3588 processor. That would be pretty good as far as midrange devices (under USD $150) are concerned. Would be great if they also adopted User Removable Battery for such devices. Back on topic: Hardware wise, the MTK D900 should be the best we get, but it will still lack the software optimisations we see on Qualcomm's chipsets. There's a sizeable hit to performance when it comes to PS2, 3DS, GameCube and Wii emulation. As well as other fronts, like power management, 4G/5G integrated radio, proper GPS calibration, better software support like Custom ROMs etc etc. So the QC 8g1+ might actually be better, but I would strongly urge people to wait for the QC 8g2 and I will elaborate below. rant: We've hit a plateau since the QSD 855, with higher performance always coming with higher power-draw (855+/860, 865, 865+, 888, 8g1). With efficiency increases owing mostly to node improvements (8nm to 5nm). The outlier here is the QSD 870, which raises performance whilst reducing power-draw, whilst the QSD 778/780 roughly inline with the 855+. I'm referring to actual real-world performance, and not the exaggerated synthetic benchmarks. One of the major culprits has been the Cotex-X1 and Cortex-X2 Large Cores. They've proven themselves to be quite pointless on thin pocketable devices like phones. And I'm generally not a fan of large, heavy, thick devices with active cooling. Sometimes that initial burst of performance has been useful, like for the dreaded eggNS when starting up, initially booting and loading titles. You get a quick burst of performance, which drains a lot of power, generates too much heat, and causes the device to throttle for most of the duration. I think the Medium Cores have historically done a much better job on their own balancing thermals, power draw, and performance. To make matters worse, going from Cortex-A78 to Cortex-A710 have been a regression in performance and battery life. Which somewhat applies to the Cortex-A55 to Cortex-A510. Without the improvements in the lithography, things would've been worse. Then again, it is not surprising if you paid close attention to the ARM announcement. It is afterall a first-generation attempt by the USA Team. We will see a massive improvement in the second-generation cores (A730) designed by the European Team which has a better track record. So my recommendation is to wait for those devices, especially if you already have something competent like the Samsung S10+, there are some reasons to upgrade but I wouldn't consider performance and efficiency as one of them (mostly 5G, 120Hz, heavier battery, larger camera). It would be like having an iPhone 11 (A13) and contemplating on upgrading to the iPhone 13 (A15), it doesn't make much sense, especially performance-wise, when factoring that the iPhone 14 (A16) is the tock-cadence and is expected to come with a new level of performance (rather than a small bump/evolution over the A15).
I really want to make one similar to this with one of my old android phone. I've been looking for shells everywhere online and just couldn't find them. I do have leftover parts from a nintendo DS that I can salvage but I'm not sure how to connect analog sticks as well to the phone. Would you mind doing an reverse engineer video disassembling the unit?
Overclocking makes very little difference. Where I did see a remarkable improvement is in both emulation updates and Aos 11 optimization. Back in January, I was barely able to get Chase for the Cup to run in MMJR at full speed. A few updates later and Android 11, it now runs at full speed with few, if any, issues. Sure it's only half emulation speed/30fps, but very playable as compared to before.
I was testing alot with overclocking and on average it gets about 2-3 FPS higher. So if there were games that were barely struggling to maintain 60 FPS, at least this is a good fix.
The Overclocking is meant to stabilize PSP, N64, Dreamcast, Naomi, and Sega Saturn emulation not allow higher GameCube Emulation. The RK3399 can only play up to very light GameCube Emulation at best.
@@Pridetoons There's a handful of racing games I play regularly on MMJR at full game speed (50-60% emulation speed) and some even at 100/100. I wouldn't consider those to be 'light' in nature. With emulation, it varies from game to game and you can't assume whether it will run or not based on its presumed attributes. Truth is, you won't know until you run it. There are games I was certain would be a breeze to run (ie. Mariokart) and they struggle, yet others you'd think do, don't. With regards to PSP, Dreamcast, NAOMI and Saturn, I play those a lot as well. Again, if any difference there's very little. Cheers. :)
I think a nintendo switch with retroarch is a nice choice. most ppl dont like retro emu with android. What is the best retro device u tested without android on it ? like a stock linux game front end ?
Hard pass until these companies release an 8gen1. My current setup for retro is my personal phone, the s22 and a Kishi. Once I renew my contract, the s22 will be dedicated for gaming even on a monitor with DeX and an old xbox controller. Lol
So it’s actually possible to get good buys on offerup? I always figured it was kinda scammy. How easy is it to get great deals? Are you shocked when you get something or is it fairly common?
@@jdisdetermined Not really. It also is dependant on your area. I have bought multiple things ranging from car parts, consoles, or collectibles and I have had nothing but positive experiences.
As much as I would want a retro handheld that can play emulated games, I can justify the price for a handheld that cant play Outrun 2006 on 2x resolution... Also all the constant tinkering to get only some of your games to work is just not worth all the stress.
Regarding PS2, I tried about 40 of the PS2 games I have, mostly RPGs and fighting games, and only 7 I would consider in a fully playable state: Sakura Wars: So Long my Love Phantasy Star 1 Phantasy Star 2 Ar Tonelico 1 Ar Tonelico 2 Dragon Quest 5 Capcom vs SNK 2 So basically, unless its a 2D game don't really expect it to play on this device (or using PS1 graphics like DQ5). Closest I could get in any real 3D games was around 80-90% framerate.
@@TakiUdon I bought it on Ali Express. Got the flashing red power light. Will no longer charge. Mfr wont reply and Ali wont take it back... do you know of a good contact at Anbernic that actually replies?
What about battery life, now that you can turn off the fan? I'm having a lot of struggle charging my RG552 up to 100%. It always stops at around 89-91% with the included charger. Only with my apple macbook air charger I can get it up to 100% but it takes about 3 hours. Still the battery only lasts for about 3-4 hours, even if I only play 8bit/16bit games.
I don't recommend playing mobile MOBA with this. What if certain heroes their skill 1, 2, 3 and ultimate need to drag the stick. Yes, you can setting it. But in gameplay you are slowing down your team.
Android 11 is a buggy mess with controllers. With some games, my razer kishi just won't work as expected with my android 11 phone. That's a recurrent problem with android 11, just like the gestures.
Only low-end GameCube Emulation is playable on the RK3399. Basically Pikman 1&2, Wario World, Viewtiful Joe 1&2, and Radirgy. Also most PS2 emulation isn't possible on a RK3399 processor.
Still overpriced and average. Retroid should just do a larger version of the Pocket 2+ and get it out to market at relative pricing to the Pocket 2+ (maybe $149). It would knock the 552 on its arse. At least with Retroid you get OTA updates and firmware that has had effort put into it. Its not like Anbernic have not had a chance to see other Android predecessor devices that have performed well and learn from them with things like the mapping software. Considering they have a history at being good at cloning devices but with better build quality, they have still failed here!
@@jamesyu5212 it's a well known fact that the Anbernic screen is around $15 per unit and that's without a discount on bulk buying so hardly justifies the price and that's aside from the fact they rely on the community for a lot of their free dev work. I think Retroid could deliver on a larger screen handheld with better ergonomics, more powerful chip set with better battery life and their own Android with their own developed front end and I think they could deliver it at the right price. Anbernic are way over pricing their productsand I think they will continue to do so with the forthcoming 503.
@@jamesyu5212 so they chose to go with a chip set that costs more, is less powerful and needs the cooling as it's known to get a bit toasty. That doesn't make a lot of business sense really. I'm not joining a trend with my criticism. Their devices up to this point have delivered hardware wise with quality but that is all they needed to do because all the competition were using the same RK3326 or JZ4770 SOC's with the same community developed firmwares. They are now in an arena where the competition have gone all out and they have been found wanting. The 552 on release didn't have Bluetooth or 5Ghz WiFi either. The only problem with sticking to Linux distros is that they still lag behind Android for emulation performance. I hope they make a better comeback with their next flagship handheld and change minds. However the fact the 503 will only come with 1gb of RAM leaves me thinking they won't currently.
@@jamesyu5212 there is only a limited time before that availability problem will no longer exist. Anbernic need to be more realistic on price and box a bit clever with ideas. Take the Miyoo Mini for example. Lots of handhelds can cover PS1 and below but Miyoo have delivered it in a pocketable format, good build quality and at a keen price and its taken off. If the RG280V had gone at that price, I don't think the Miyoo Mini would exist. If I was Anbernic, I would be looking at how well the Powkiddy V90 done for its small clamshell form factor and give us all a RK3326 clamshell, even a JZ4770 one because at least it would be original and if priced competitively would sell well.

there was a update for dead cells wich let me use my kishi controller, wich didnt worked before android update
Oh wow it looks so pretty. I wish it were more rounded like the vita, and with the vita sticks to be pocketable. If one of these could he in that 5 inch screen form factor but be able to emulate ps2 well snapdragon 865 at least, then I'd totally ditch my phone for it.
they make em, you just have to dig around...
@@doughhole Unfortunately they don't. There are some cheap vita shaped ones but they are absolutely garbage. The odin is a nice size at 6 inches. About the size of a switch lite. The new loki should be the same size, so I'll probably get one of those as a handheld to cover everything
This makes me grateful for odin 😭
Taki moving wii games is possible too like moving GC more or less with wii ... ??? Tell me
Sailing the high seas for Nintendo games is the best thing at this point.
does anyone know what that "clockwork" device is at 1:02?
never mind, for anybody interested it is the clockwork devterm
Why didn't this have the new RK 3588? I gave up on Anbernic.
I wish they would come out with a Snapdragon 8 gen 1 gaming handheld
Or the 888+ also a powerhouse!
I'm excited for everyone with a 552 but I'm odin all the way
Подскажите пожалуйста, как установить на нее плей маркет, у меня консоль пришла на 11 андроиде, плей маркета не было, при попытке скачать и установить , обновить вылетает ошибка запуска.
Need some advice, In my country this device(retroid 3) sell for around 200$ (180$ 2nd hand), pocket 2+ 150$ (2nd hand 125$), rg552 around 230$ (2nd hand 160$), and rg353P around 130$ (2nd hand 100$)
My game primary on ps1, GBA, PS2, and PSP.
PS1 : legend of dragoon, chrono cross, FF VII, FF VIII, legend of legaia, digimon 1 2 3.
PS2 : legaia 2
PSP : digimon world re digitize, digimon adventure
My budget is 180$ for it. for the best buck it seem rg552 at 2nd hand. But the performance on pocket 3 is still the best out of it.
i want to buy this device to play with moonlight and steamlink only ! do you recommand ? or you have other recommandation ? ty for all your reviews!
Taki Are you going to get a phone with the Dimensity 9000?
Yes
@@TakiUdon
I think it's kind of meh.
Back on topic:
Hardware wise, the MTK D900 should be the best we get, but it will still lack the software optimisations we see on Qualcomm's chipsets. There's a sizeable hit to performance when it comes to PS2, 3DS, GameCube and Wii emulation. As well as other fronts, like power management, 4G/5G integrated radio, proper GPS calibration, better software support like Custom ROMs etc etc. So the QC 8g1+ might actually be better, but I would strongly urge people to wait for the QC 8g2 and I will elaborate below.
rant:
We've hit a plateau since the QSD 855, with higher performance always coming with higher power-draw (855+/860, 865, 865+, 888, 8g1).
Which device would you recommend? This or the X18S?
I really want to make one similar to this with one of my old android phone. I've been looking for shells everywhere online and just couldn't find them. I do have leftover parts from a nintendo DS that I can salvage but I'm not sure how to connect analog sticks as well to the phone. Would you mind doing an reverse engineer video disassembling the unit?
Was the issue with google play services to work on android 11 ever fixed?
It's putting me off buying one of these.
Rp2+ work better, but i hope a bigger screen from rp2+
Taki we need you to review the steam deck
Can you actually OC the retroid p3+?
Can we install open Gapps on it?
Any fix for the joysticks not working anymore?
Can u play ps2 game on anbernic rg552 ? I want play front mission 5
Can it run Gamepass well?
Is this worth it for £140? $175?
i want to ask can you install steam link on this device ?
I need PS4 & 5 Portable ! Asap !
Dual Boot still possible with this update?
Yes
Hard pass until these companies release an 8gen1. My current setup for retro is my personal phone, the s22 and a Kishi. Once I renew my contract, the s22 will be dedicated for gaming even on a monitor with DeX and an old xbox controller. Lol
Can u make video of playing pandemonium ps1
Its weird that they removed the play store, it was actually on mine with the stock image.
Im gonna asume these are scam bait messages, thats the 2nd one I got. I guess Taki got big enough for some malicious bots to take notice.
And, one month later, Anbernic isn't able to purpose Google Play version of this firmware....
I just sold my 5g552.i am getting the gpd win 3.like retro game but need my power run emulator.
I picked up a 552 on OfferUp for $100 but I still gotta say that what they charge for this ($220+) is definitely not worth it.
@@jdisdetermined either way do not buy the 552 at MSRP. It is definitely not worth it.
As much as I would want a retro handheld that can play emulated games, I can justify the price for a handheld that cant play Outrun 2006 on 2x resolution... Also all the constant tinkering to get only some of your games to work is just not worth all the stress.
Where to find windows 11 update ?
Apps broken, performance increase marginal 🤦♂️ Superb!, out of nowhere, can they also drop the price then by $60!😁
I managed to overclock this console. However, now I can't access to the play store :(
Can this play MLB the Show, PS2??
Alguien que me pueda explicar en español como actualizar por favor
Oh, bad performance. I stay with my GPD XD Plus. Runs much better.
It is a fake!
Where's the link for the update do you have to pay for it?
I dont really see who this device is for exactly with the market beeing where it is
Regarding PS2, I tried about 40 of the PS2 games I have, mostly RPGs and fighting games, and only 7 I would consider in a fully playable state:
Sakura Wars: So Long my Love
Phantasy Star 1
Phantasy Star 2
Ar Tonelico 1
Ar Tonelico 2
Dragon Quest 5
Capcom vs SNK 2
So basically, unless its a 2D game don't really expect it to play on this device (or using PS1 graphics like DQ5). Closest I could get in any real 3D games was around 80-90% framerate.
Would be nice if mine still worked. Worked less than 2 months. No support from the mfr.
What platform did you buy it from? What happened?
@@TakiUdon I bought it on Ali Express. Got the flashing red power light. Will no longer charge. Mfr wont reply and Ali wont take it back... do you know of a good contact at Anbernic that actually replies?
I laughed out loud when it stuttered at 2x resolution playing ffvii. The miyoo mini can do better than that, not to mention the rg351.
can you ask them to make a metal one :)
"Your sanity" lol
Still overpriced and average. Retroid should just do a larger version of the Pocket 2+ and get it out to market at relative pricing to the Pocket 2+ (maybe $149). It would knock the 552 on its arse. At least with Retroid you get OTA updates and firmware that has had effort put into it. Its not like Anbernic have not had a chance to see other Android predecessor devices that have performed well and learn from them with things like the mapping software. Considering they have a history at being good at cloning devices but with better build quality, they have still failed here!
That's the Retroid Pocket 3.
@@Pridetoons Do you know when it comes out? I wanna buy a device but i feel like it's a bad time atm.

4:10 seeing ON SCREEN TOUCH CONTROLS on a device with proper physical buttons is the most disgusting thing ever and the number one reason why I will never buy an android based gaming device. They need to insert a UNIVERSAL configurator that turns the transparency to absolute ZERO for ANY app from ANY developer nomatter what, NO EXCEPTIONS and only then will I consider one.
people in the comments ask too much by expecting ps2 and gamecube emulation to just work these fucking handhelds play so many different console generations as it is
edit: its usually people new to emulation bitching and moaning cause not every console out there is 100% playable
Because the device is overpriced for the power it delivers. If you're gonna fork out $200+ for a retro handheld, why would you choose this over the Odin Base or Lite? IT JUST DOESN'T MAKE SENSE.
This thing seems kind of pointless.
