What would you do if you were in charge of Nintendo's relationship with the competitive Smash community?

    • @Effyew2

Let licensed and unlicensed tournaments run unabated. This clinging to their IP to such lengths is tiresome. They should be happy so many people like the game. If they want to run their own licensed tourneys that's cool, shutting down or trying to control unlicensed ones isn't. If the unlicensed tourneys do better than theirs, that just means they need to do better or get with the program and properly and fairly license the hard working members of the community.

I think the first step would be to realize how bad the PR has been up until this point, and how that will influence any conversations you have with the community. The main reasons things like this last scandal happen is because Nintendo's reps and the actual players and organizers are not on the same page. People are wary of interacting with Nintendo, because even outside of Smash they have been unwilling to set up a way forward for broadcasters/organizers to build on their IP.
It's unreasonable to expect Nintendo to open up the can of worms that is IP law and give blanket approval to all mods. No one expects that. However, if Nintendo was willing to sit down and provide a path to get approval for quality of life mods, their PR would improve immediately. For Melee, mods like the Universal Controller Fix or Slippi streaming make the experience better for both players and viewers in a way that doesn't encroach on Nintendo's IP. Historical precedent makes TOs and players wary of working with Nintendo because Nintendo's blanket dissaproval of all mods only makes the experience worse for everyone involved.
Setting up an approval process for these kinds of mods for licensed tournaments is probably pretty difficult, but even just working with TOs on a case by case basis to approve just the 2 I mentioned (UCF and Slippi streaming) would go MILES in improving Nintendo's PR and make it easier for them to work with the community in the future, and is definitely worth navigating the legal challenges.

The biggest problem is that Nintendo doesn't really have an actual relationship with the Smash community. To Smashers, they are a faceless, voiceless entity that really only shows up to shut down tournaments every now and then. Kinda like the asshole uncle that shows up to family Christmas every once in a while and always manages to mess up the vibe.
For this to change, Nintendo needs to handle esports in a manner similar to their contemporaries (i.e. Bamco, Capcom, Riot). They need to have a public facing competitive games department, with the licensing details being public and easy enough for anyone who wants to run official tournaments to follow. There needs to be transparency and communication for every event organizer at every level. It shouldn't be such a strange, nebulous process to get an official license, and there shouldn't be one org positioning as The Guys™️ that will get your tournament a license.
The reason things went south is because Panda's CEO wanted to be The Guy and it started to get ugly when people were put off by one org having that kind of power.

    • @carbon13
      @carbon13 2 роки тому +5

@@Soundwves 100% agree. Transparency on the license approval process, and really just a forum where players can openly voice their suggestions for improvements and concerns would honestly just solve the PR problem. The only reason people scream into the void is because there is no real way of communicating our frustrations with Nintendo without being the CEO of Panda. Panda took Nintendo's trust and instead of working with Nintendo to make the process of getting a license more open, they purposefully obscured the nature of their relationship for their own gain.
Even if Panda had turned out to have everyone's best interest at heart, limiting communications to just one org with a limited perspective on the rest of the scene was doomed to failure.

Just let the community run unlicensed events its that simple. They'd have an argument to shut SWT down if there were modded versions of the game, but SWT played by all the rules and gave them plenty of time. This all happened because Nintendo lagged on making a decision for months to reply to their request for a license just to get in the way at the last minute.
For all the talk about how unprofessional the smash community is, Nintendo comes across just as bad here. They had months to communicate their stance on unlicensed events. This could have saved SWT so much money if they could cancel before they booked the venue and accommodations for the event. Now the organizers are out hundreds of thousands of dollars and thousands of hours of wasted time.
If Nintendo ACTUALLY cares about repairing their relationship with the community, they have to realize that they should only interact with the community when its ABSOLUTELY necessary like mods of their IP. The community is rightfully distrustful of Nintendo so you'd have to prove that you care about fixing the relationship over time with your actions.

I mean they said a whole lot of other things too. It's bizarre to me how strong the selective hearing is from the Smash community. The situation only happened because as they said, some kids couldn't handle their moms telling them "no, don't do that." The Smash scene has the potential to get really big, and the lack of maturity from at least the tournament heads (that includes everybody including Alan and the SWT members etc, before you speak in defense of SWT, they caused the loss of a lot of jobs and probably caused a lot more than $100,000 in damages by airing this in public, not to mention the countless harassment) essentially cause the Smash community to be this niche thing that gets banned from a bunch of venues for property damages.
Smash community also wants to be childish but also just have all the rights, too. If that were the case, then they should've developed that game themselves. The community's combined wallets probably can't fund the development of something like Smash. If you understand that, then you can easily understand why Nintendo is being so anal about it. Maybe it's time to grow up, or don't grow up and accept that you won't get to do everything you want to do for free.

@@monkeylemur Pretty much this, the Smash TO's talked about how Panda threatened them when they outright threw Panda under the bus and destroyed the entire community over business negotiations and spreading rumors/forming bias opinions through personal DMs. The Ken guy sounded completely apathetic/sociopathic in how he handled Alan's statement and openly bad mouthed him publicly before SWT's statement.
I don't trust most of the Smash TO's and wouldn't want to deal with them seeing how cut throat their publicity tactics are.

    • @penz1297

@@monkeylemur You need to realise that it's not just Nintendo telling us "no," but more specifically them doing nothing, and then saying "no" the last minute after everything was paid for. This isn't the first, or most egregious time. If you look back to EVO 2013, Nintendo waited until a day or two before the tourney, after smashers raised a ton of money for cancer research (I think), and then tried to shut it down. Fortunately, there was enough backlash that Nintendo backed off on that one, but, despite that being almost 10 years ago, that's kind of the precedent that we have when it comes to Nintendo dealing with Smash.

The problem is that Nintendo never cared about making their own tournaments, in fact, they even sent multiple Cease and desist to fan tournaments.
For that reason, the Smash Community has managed its own tournaments, leaderboards, books, sponsorships, etc.
For me, the right call was to have their own 'official' tournament but let the people run their own tournaments as well. Like GF did with the Pokémon VGC scene, I remember that before it the only 'entity' that controlled the Competitive Scene was Smogon.
Now, this is the worst timeline possible, we don't have either the Fan SWT or the 'official' Pandacup. The sponsors and teams will be scared to invest in the Smash Community, The players felt betrayed by Nintendo one more time, and Nintendo will not invest in the Competitive Scene because of this experience.

I don't know why Nintendo is so hostile towards the Smash community. I understand being hesitant on giving a license, but like sending a letter on Thanksgiving weekend, 2 or 3 weeks before the end of the circuit, telling them they cannot run the tournament and refusing to give a license, and then going into PR mode saying, "Well we didn't tell them to cancel the tournament. We just implied that if they didn't, we'll shut it down, so we didn't do anything wrong." It's just disingenuous and extremely vile towards competitive players who spent time and money competing for an entire year with Nintendo stringing them along saying they won't shut this circuit down only to shut it down in the end. Nintendo needs to be better about this whole situation, full stop. It's like they have zero sympathy for international players who already paid for this event and is actually in the U.S. currently for the event.
This one single decision has made an entire community fear for their own career of being a competitive player, or being a commentator for Smash, or even organizing tournaments. A community that has been battered for over a decade because they wanted to play a game in a way that Nintendo disapproved of. And if that isn't the case, Nintendo sure as hell is doing a horrendous job communicating that. It just feels like they're strong arming the community to self implode and hoping they go away from everyone losing faith in hosting tournaments while pretending like they care.

They never said this. Nintendo never sent a shutdown notice and outright said they were not going to. To me, it sounds like SWT misheard Nintendo's statement which seems like the only thing they did say to SWT was that they could not grant them a license for SWT in 2022 and 2023.
Again, Nintendo made it clear in their statement and alot of this just sounds like SWT misheard their statement and then proceeded to throw Panda Global under the bus for no reason other than TO's beef and rumors/bad mouthing behind the scenes.

@@YightLagami You would be right if historically Nintendo didn't consitently contact tournaments with exactly such messages as a warning, followed up with a real Cease & Desist, when not taken serious. In this case they explicitly said the days of holding tournaments without a license are over & also that there were health concerns (which clearly is a bad scapegoat to get out of this PR mess). They have sued for less.
So given the historical evidence / fact that Nintendo will most likely follow up on their warning with a cease & desist, if not taken seriously, it'd be SEVERELY irresponsible to hold a tournament this big nonetheless.
Nintendo said they'll only allow events that have a license, SWT asked if they could get one, Nintendo said no, SWT asked if they could still proceed without a license as previously agreed, Nintendo said "those days are over".
That's why the context and history of the Smash competitive scene & Nintendo plays such a big role here.

@@ShallBePurified Yes, because the only thing SWT heard was, "Those times are over now." Which could be referring to those times to get a license in 2022/2023 are over now.
The fact that Nintendo reiterated that fact again and the fact that SWT even stated that Nintendo said this before multiple times during the year that they didn't need a license to run the event and reaffirmed it again in their official statement.
There is no benefit to taking down this tournament with no actual monetary gains or even any particular risk associated with it as far as we can tell. Nintendo has no reason to be hostile when they wanted to build better relations with the community and openly state that they're still willing to license events.

    1) they have to undo the damage the previous attempt at a Mario movie did
    2) They are aware of the negative reception to some people's voices/casting that they think the more you see/hear may get people used to it by the time the movie comes out

As a former TO so many of the participants are good apples, but SO MANY are still bad apples and they truly ruin it for everyone around them. Until players can and are able to report and hold other players accountable for their garbage behavior. Nothing will change. TO's need to do more, attendees need to do more, and aside from Nintendo being ridiculous, you can't blame them for not wanting to put their hands or name on the events. But I'll tell you what, my time TO-ing for 2-3 years was a bloody nightmare. From Melee players acting like literal unhinged children temper tantruming because you asked them to throw their trash in a trash can, to death threats in my personal life, or being harassed in my personal spaces, to people stealing money, and terrible attitude and language. The smash community really needs to become more centralized. Take a moment to communicate to the major players and organizers and come up with a central governing body; but also they need to realize who they’re dealing with and that they need play by Nintendo’s rule. It doesn’t help that the community itself puts out a messy toxic image that is not any helpful or desirable.

Appreciate that Kit & Krysta are openly confirming what we in the community already know - which is that Nintendo's goal with the Panda partnership was to impose their control on the scene.
What I don't appreciate is the paternalism. Maybe it's because I only participate in the Melee scene, which is older; but the way they describe the Smash community is unrecognizable to me.
I regularly attend events organized by Beyond the Summit, VGBC, and even more deeply-grassroots orgs that put on locals all around the US. They have been, without exception, highly professionally-run events, run on decades of community organizing experience.
I don't know how Kit & Krysta could listen to someone like Blur, Bobby Scar, or Ludwig talk us through this bump in the road and arrive at the conclusion that our community needs some growing-up. These are seasoned, mature individuals with a very clear vision for our scene, and I feel safe and confident in their leadership.

1:40:06 I disagree with Krysta here. Nintendo actually does have a pretty good track record for backwards compatibility. GameCube games were playable on the Wii. Game Boy and Game Boy color games were playable on the GBA. GBA games were playable on the DS. DS games were playable on the 3DS. Wii games were playable on the Wii U. Usually, the next gen Nintendo console supports backwards compatibility for the previous console. The Switch is an oddity in that regard, but they wouldn’t have benefited much from Wii U backwards compatibility since the Wii U sales were so poor. Plus, the extra effort of adding a disk drive just for that backwards compatibility wouldn’t be worth it since Switch games are cartridges. If the next gen Nintendo console after the Switch also uses cartridges, I could definitely see it being backwards compatible with the Switch, and now that they’re more settled with NSO and user accounts, transferring your already purchased digital copies of games to the new system should be easier for them to keep track of.

Nintendo had explained this in the past
      They used to
But there’s not much you could do with that besides incremental improvements
Nintendo got bored of power they wanted to be different

Power is irrelevant to them they care more about the fun
Would you rather play a game to have fun or to just stare at a rock’s texture
If you want good graphics go outside
      That’s not the point
Honestly if you guys want good graphics/texture go outside cuz that’s not what Nintendo is about
Nintendo is about whimsy and wonder and sense of adventure and the cast of unique and colorful characters and the friends you make along the way
The Nintendo characters themselves are what make the games so good not graphics
I mean graphics wasn’t what got us into these franchises in the first place was it
It was the charm of the worlds and being able to play with friends and make new friends that has always been the charm of Nintendo from the beginning to now and forever
Nintendo is completely inspired and unlike any other games that exist it’s extremely one of a kind and unique
No one can replicate it and be successful at it despite many attempts
Nintendo games are cozy and that’s why they’re fun

The problem is that Sony and Microsoft lose money with their consoles in the first years because that kind of hardware is really expensive ( You can find that you need at least 1000$+ to build a CPU with similar HW Specs), but as time passes the original HW will be cheaper.
They can do that strategy because they need to have a console with good specs to satisfy their userbase but they also need a good price
They can assume that risk because they are huge companies compared to Nintendo which is more focused on gaming, so they need to sell Nintendo Switch with profit ( Cheap Hardware)

I think the next system, if it is a Switch 2 type thing with the same form factor probably will carry over games, saves and so on. With the transition being so seamless with PS4 to 5, and Xbox as well, I don’t think people would stand for it. And also the fact that retro games are now part of a subscription indicates to me that they know they can’t get away with not rolling over purchases anymore. We also have cloud saves, so it should be straightforward. Except for Animal Crossing of course.

The thing is whenever Nintendo said they never asked Smash World Tour to cancel their finale, Smash World Tour had written proof that Nintendo told them they would not grant them a license and upon asking if they could run without a License, Nintendo said "those times were over." Like technically they didn't tell them to cancel, but they did not give a license, and they would get shut down if they ran without a license. And if they were fine with the finale, why did Nintendo urgently tell them the literal day before Thanksgiving 2 weeks before the event that they would not license it?

    • @YightLagami
      @YightLagami 2 роки тому +1

"Those times were over" is the most vague statement that could mean anything. It could also be referring to the license in question meaning that the time to get a license for 2022/2023 is over. If you look at the "proof" SWT posted, the email is just stating that they would not be able to grant SWT a license for 2022/2023 due to them not meeting their expectations. 1st expectation is that they announced the event before actually getting approval by Nintendo and then running the circuit without Nintendo's approval. By that point, the time for SWT to get their license is over for 2022 and 2023.
Besides that, SWT was pestering Nintendo to get a response about their license while Nintendo was already busy with other things like Panda Cup which was already being worked on 3 years ago prior to SWT's announcement.
Nintendo eventually got the time to decide the license issue and gave them their response after they finished their other deals. They likely did it on a deadline/goal of finishing most their december workings prior to thanksgiving.

Nintendo told them they wouldn’t shut down the competition in question. Sounds like SWT shut it down because they weren’t given the license for future events after this one. Basically SWT threw a tantrum and cancelled their own event, blamed Nintendo, and are hoping that the anger they created will be directed at and pressure Nintendo into giving them their license for future events. So SWT is the one that threw away all the work and money that went into this tourney in hopes of securing future events. Why not just meet the requirements Nintendo laid out for obtaining a license? What’s so hard about that?

Eh, from what I can tell the Smash Bros tournament organizers are amateur, but very willing to put in the work and do whatever they need to. If they saw a hoop to jump through, I strongly believe they would do it. On the other hand, if they invest their very limited money into a tournament and Nintendo cancels it without a way to fix things and un-cancel, they will be furious. If nintendo required a 10% cut of profits, but gave the tournament a license and something to award for first prize, I feel like that would be considered a win

About the Mario movie trailers, yes that's an Illumination thing. They are notorious for marketing their movies to death because they make so much money off of such mid products that the have to shove it in your face until you finally cave in to watch it. If anything the Mario movie has been marketed less than their other movies it feels like, and I guess it's because they don't want to spoil too much and the product sells itself, it looks really good and I was sold on the first trailer alone. So maybe it's their confidence that the Mario name will sell and especially people seeing the quality of the artstyle and animation, they know word of mouth and social media will carry here

As a super duper pokemon fan (playing as I listen) I think it's important to point out the performance issues because while we love pokemon, rushing out games with this performance is going to do 2 things. 1) It's gonna make new comers instantly drop the game. I think if Nintendo wants to get involved with the smash community, they'd have to not try to control it. The Smash community as a whole (especially the melee scene) really doesn't like being controlled and have shown multiple times that they will read between the lines and know when Nintendo is trying to control them (and would probably accuse Nintendo are controlling them even if they aren't trying to). Though if Nintendo were to get more control over the community they would do best to be more open about how they are helping the community as opposed to only working behind the scenes, as the community is always sceptical about how Nintendo is getting involved with things, as well as maybe appeasing them and contributing to prize pools

The John Q public probably couldn't care less about Nintendo shutting down a video game tournament, but you can be sure that if they see/hear a headline that reads "child molester ring tied to Nintendo-partnered video game tournament", there'll be a giant mess in terms of bad press.

Even better, why do people think of the fan first and forget the developer and company that make and own the game respectively? Not just the people associated with BTS and VGBC, but even down to the local level it really feels like TOs care about maintaining good relationships with attendees and venue hosts, so when you mention something like "Nintendo found the best people in the community (Panda) and it ended up being a mess", it sounds like the relations team at Nintendo didn't take a good enough look at the scene because to my knowledge, Panda has never been on the list of good tournament organizers as long as they've existed. In fact, Dr Alan was notorious for having been the head organizer of MVG Sandstorm, an infamously poorly run event in 2015. The immaturity comment is a reference to an acculimation of the Project M + UCF Drama pre- EVO, and the EVO falling out because of MrWizard being outed. Remember, Nintendo was banking on EVO and even aired EVO Smash finals on ESPN2 and Disney.
If you REALLY need it spelled out for you; Nairo, ZeRo were both "faces of Smash 4" who were HEAVILYYYY promoted on the Nintendo channels and you already know how both of those people ended up. I didn't even mention more names because now you get the broader picture of why the "Smash scene" from an outsiders perspective can be seen as "immature".
If you want the Melee sides of things, there were also moments in the scene going against having a "board" of people moderating the scene, and deciding who to ban from tournaments. That was met with controversy.... and yet people want Nintendo to make Smash esports but are against a governing body to protect people at these tournaments...
I've been a part of the scene for a very long time, and knew this relationship would never work unless a third party company handled things. The TOs people have referred to as reputable organizers have also said and done against Nintendo's wishes. The only VALID TO at this point capable of working with Nintendo is Beyond the Summit, but their demographic and advertisers do not align with Nintendo branding. If CEO and Jebailey expanded outside of Florida, then he would trump BTS.

It's a fair point and certainly there are great people in the community we've met over the years. Unfortunately the negative actions of a few bad actors reflect poorly on the community overall and can impact Nintendo's decision making.

It's so sad, the doctor is supposed to be there for the people but he had his own agenda. Feels bad, i really thought panda had the best of the community in mind until people left and right started speaking up about alan's behaviour.

On the 2022 Fall Game Guide episode of the Nintendo Power Podcast, Bill Trinen and Dr. Alan Bunney from Panda Global discussed updates on the Panda Cup Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Super Smash Bros. Melee tournament circuit. I have to say that Dr. Alan rubbed me the wrong way, every time he talked. He clearly kept saying Smash Bros., right after Bill and Chris would say Smash Brothers. He did not seem to respect the IP. Also, will you be on the End of the Year NP podcast?

@@kitandkrysta I've got something to say, I don't think we should support the smash community. They may look like an innocent community but they've done a lot of terrible stuff behind the scenes. They are also the same ones that send Sakurai death threats over a DLC fighter and use Iwata's death as a weapon against casual gamers and Nintendo in a disgusting and disturbing way

kind of apathetic to refer to the smash community as children. They've sustained an environment and created growth for years with independent leaders and in recent years have taken incredibly strong steps to increase safety and deal with bad actors in the community. Referring to them as lacking "adults" is just demeaning and reinforces the capitalist structure Nintendo limits itself committing to. It's probably consistently been one of the most damaging things to Nintendo's brand.
