How does everyone like this approach? One video focusing on the visual splendor of the game without any console comparisons and another dedicated entirely to said comparison? It's not always possible to do but I wanted to try it here.
Rockstar have done what they've always done, working their magic with lighting and post processing to evoke the impression of a realistic image. RDR2 however has demonstrated something I've never seen before in an open world game in that the scenes produced are about 95% perfect. There's a shimmer here, a visible culling horizon there, but it rarely draws your eye unless you're out looking for it. The LOD management is so superlative that you can forget it's there at all; it's almost seamless. This is a game I can boot up and simply admire.
2024, even still there has not been a single game that's even come close to matching this stunning open world, fidelity wise or tech wise. GTA VI is going to be a jaw dropper.
@@lukemorris9066 HFW might be more technically advanced in terms of graphic rendering. RDR2 does have some low res textures for 2024. However, HFW doesn't come even close in regard to details and interactivity. No game does. RDR2 is an open world masterpiece, not just in graphics
Horizon Zero Dawn was the first game to make me truly notice what this generation could do for consoles. However it’s Red Dead Redemption 2 that made me notice what happens when you put legit technological wizards in front of a computer and ask them to make a game. Sure, Uncharted 4 and God of War are able to pull off some amazing feats in graphics but in the context of RDR2 being this gigantic Open World, this has to be the best looking game I have ever seen. Well done Rockstar!
You can't compare the budgets man. What Naughty Dog and SMS do with their smaller teams, budgets (still huge but smaller when compared to R*'s) and shorter development cycles is just as amazing. RDR2 is what's possible to achieve when money is available. R* is on a level of their own. It's kinda pointless to even compare imo.
@True Roman yeah but that's not unusual for triple A devs who make huge sales. Bethesda, ND, CDPR all spend like 5 years developing and almost always have multiple delays

If you finished God of war in 2 days then you have not slept at all in those 2 days. It will clearly take quite some hours finishing that game. And certainly if you want to do some of the extra's. Anyway. God of war is an incredible game and also the best reviewed game on the PS4 to date. So whatever happens with Red dead redemption 2. If they get as high, higher or lower, God of war is a spectacular Game.

Rockstar has always been known for abusing their employees with ridiculous and very mandatory overtime expectations. Ironically, the first time these allegations came to light was with the first Red Dead and it looks like the exact same work culture is alive and well with the second.
Out of all the developers out there, Rockstar has one of biggest, if not the biggest budget out there, with one of the biggest teams, and they spend many years crafting their games. It's because of Rockstar taking their time like they actually give a damn about their game unlike others who will rush any crap out the door, that we get such a richly detailed and interactive world.
Every single one of their games has looked like this. And you know why? They don;t use CGI in their trailers. All ingame footage. That is why they are the undisputed king in AAA open world games
These DF in-depth look videos by John are watched even after decades since they offer so rigorous amount of great detail and the analysis is so comprehensive. Also the presentation is spot on and very well done. Really enjoyed this.
This is the most beautiful game ive seen this generation. Especially the xbox one x version. So glad rockstar delays their games until they're ready and not release unfinished products like 75% of the industry.

Why cant you do both? 2 totally different and good types of games. If they gave the BETA to everyone for a week plus many would play they game and finish it and cancel their preorder and have played the game for 5 dollars or free(if ordered on console) They are a business, they have to make money, it also makes sense to force people online in short periods to stress the servers to see if they crash... the point of a beta. This wasnt an early access buy, it was a beta buy. (and sure id love to have the complete game now but gotta use common sense and use your head and not your heart lol)

@@Aryan-rp7xu I don't care about Ray tracing in my games personally so I've stuck with my gtx 1070 as I simply don't care for it. I'd rather take the higher framerate over better shadows any day of the year. Also I think anything over 1080p is overkill if you have smaller than a 27 inch display.

Still one of the best looking games in 2022. I love those moments where the weather conditions are juuuust right, like when the clouds are starting to break and letting some sunlight in and you're gifted amazing sun rays and light spilling onto the landscape in little areas.

i think this game still holds up 5 years later, and will likely hold up for a long time. even when new games graphics blow this out of the water, as they eventually will, this still has such a painterly look to it no matter where you are or what direction the camera is facing
I still can barely grasp how vast and sprawling this world is, and I'm already about 70 hours into the game. Especially discovering mysteries in so many remote corners of the map makes exploring it even without any proper objective sooo much fun!

Right? We have these new powerhouse consoles.. yet devs from years ago were able to a achieve something that this so called ‘next gen’ can’t even match in linear games. Instead, they’re trying to sell this new tech with more pixels, frames and shinier puddles. I don’t think we’ll see the technological leap we had between PS3 and PS4. The differences are way more subtle now.
I'm here playing RDR2 again after all this time in 2024. Finally working through the epilogue. I'm playing on PC in first person, and man I really think this is still the best open world to date. It may not have the shiniest bells and whistles now, but the detail on all scales is just incredible. There is so much personality in the world. The ecosystem feels so alive without breaking a natural feeling world. Man, I'm still only playing at 1080, but it looks incredible.
@@raknikmik We're talking about two characters on screen the majority of the time. In RD2 I've seen 30 plus characters, animals, and insects all interacting with one another. Ad in a fully dynamics weather system with day/night cycles and you have a top 10 best looking game this gen. I don't know, I think Namco has some optimization to do on their UE4 engine. Tekken 7 couldn't hit 4K 60 initially on my GTX 1080 graphics card last year. I can do 4K 60 now, but initially the performance was not what I expected given the game and hardware. I didn't see anything that blew mind in SC6 60 FPS or not. Injustice 2 was mind blowing so it got away with 1600P but not SC6.

Just reinstalled Red Dead 2 and was having a blast with it when I remembered Digital Foundry's incredible video from three years ago, discussing all the technical feats. Immediately came here to watch this again and I can only say two things: 1. How this game has aged like fine wine from a technical standpoint - it's a masterpiece in graphical complexity and smooth, robust gameplay which makes me addicted to it like no other game. And 2. How incredibly insightful and detailed the presentation is, in this video - I'm assuming a lot of hard work went into it and it shows. The visuals they've shown here from gameplay are spellbinding. 30 minutes well spend. If there's anyone who's just discovered this game or are about to boot it up after 3 years, I urge you all : Please watch this video and just appreciate the scale of work that went into making this game. And then play to your heart's content. Explore and experience everything the world has to offer. And for heaven's sake don't rush to complete it. Take your time. Take it all in. There won't be a game like this for quite some time. Cheers !
Same here.. I just started replaying it About 4 days ago on my pro & Man this game is just miles ahead for sure.. It's breathtaking! It's like next-gen came too early in 2018🙌

It's one game that absolutely tanks my setup when maxed out but then again most current titles would too. The best thing about Red Dead 2 is that the game still looks phenomenal on older consoles- loads better than some of the more recently released titles.

I might be alone here but in my opinion, the only thing the game lacks from a technical standpoint is maybe ray tracing and even that won't drastically change how the game looks I think. What they should bring to the next gen consoles is a 60 fps update which would be a game changer. Sadly I don't know if Rockstar can be bothered anymore about this community 😔. But don't worry about that. Go ahead and purchase a copy for the console you prefer. The game still looks gorgeous on my cousin's PS4 and it should look and perform even better on a PS5. Digital Foundry did a video on RDR 2's old gen console versions and explained how the game looks and plays best on the Xbox one x. The game in its current state is still miles ahead of any other open world title imo. Looks phenomenal irrespective of the platform. You can't go wrong with either an PS5 or an XBOX series X when it's being played in native 4k. Happy gaming 👋🏼
That's what I was thinking. This game looks better than just about any game I can think of, on ANY platform. That's even more impressive given it's size.
I'm always convinced that Rockstar engine programmers have access to some extra hidden processing power wizardry on each console,than the rest of the devs have.
GTA 6 is built upon even advance game engine than Red Dead 2 this game is 5 years old and still looks god damn amazing I can't even imagine what GTA 6 will look like.
It's going to be insanity man. This game was developed with the lowest denominator of hardware (Xbox One) and it still looks amazing on even that. The new low denominator will likely be Xbox Series S which is far more powerful than the One.

After Red Dead Redemption 2 the company took approaches to minimize crunch, it's probably not incentivized or even allowed to work over a certain amount, I don't know the exact situation but the byproduct of that is going to be a slower development.
It's been 4 years and 2 of those we have had new consoles. Nothing comes close to this game. Forbidden west is insane but lacks the subtle beauty in hiw it all comes together.
Man this game is truly remarkable in so many ways. If I had to choose one key component that really stands out it would have to be the volumetric clouds. They did such a fantastic job with them and it's by far the most selling point to creating a believable environment. I often find myself just standing at the top of a mountain and looking down over the clouds to the environment below, you can see the light shafts casting around it's insane.

By far my personal fav game since 2018. Love this game to this very day which I find myself missing from time to time which lures me to play it on PC for maximum pleasure. It’s good too on one x but I just MUCH prefer the PC experience now days since it supports a very vibrant modding community that breathes extra life to this already masterpiece of a game. Excellent tech analysis, most I knew already but stating the obvious just makes it more that relevant imo. I particularly like the level of verbal sophistication and choice of words during the presentation 👌🏼 It matches perfectly with the level of love and dedication the developers clearly put into this game. That and the fact that it practically covered everything one can hope for. Well done sir! 👍🏼

RDR2 is truly miraculous - playing on XBox 1X with a 4K projector and a 92” screen and 7 speakers around and it’s mesmerizing. Graphics are so stunningly beautiful I’ve had to pause the game so I can take a picture with phone. Thanks DF for explaining some of how R* did this.
I got it for ps4 but between the 25-30 fps and the weird haze that cinsole games use to up performance i couldnt play it for long. Beyond ready to play it on pc 🥰

It’s the end of 2023, and this game is still by far the best open world game I’ve ever played. The world is so deep and immersive that no other games even came any close. Sure Horizon Forbidden West is gorgeous, but still far from this imo.

rockstar are always years ahead in terms of open worlds.
Right? We have these new powerhouse consoles.. yet devs from years ago were able to a achieve something that this so called ‘next gen’ can’t even match in linear games. Instead, they’re trying to sell this new tech with more pixels, frames and shinier puddles.
I don’t think we’ll see the technological leap we had between PS3 and PS4. The differences are way more subtle now.

I'm here playing RDR2 again after all this time in 2024. Finally working through the epilogue. I'm playing on PC in first person, and man I really think this is still the best open world to date. It may not have the shiniest bells and whistles now, but the detail on all scales is just incredible. There is so much personality in the world. The ecosystem feels so alive without breaking a natural feeling world. Man, I'm still only playing at 1080, but it looks incredible.
God damn it, AC Odessy looks like a mobile game compare to this...

hababacon SC 6 runs at 60fps. RDR 2 runs at 30fps.
@@raknikmik We're talking about two characters on screen the majority of the time. In RD2 I've seen 30 plus characters, animals, and insects all interacting with one another. Ad in a fully dynamics weather system with day/night cycles and you have a top 10 best looking game this gen. I don't know, I think Namco has some optimization to do on their UE4 engine. Tekken 7 couldn't hit 4K 60 initially on my GTX 1080 graphics card last year. I can do 4K 60 now, but initially the performance was not what I expected given the game and hardware. I didn't see anything that blew mind in SC6 60 FPS or not. Injustice 2 was mind blowing so it got away with 1600P but not SC6.
I still want 4k60 like on my pc.

Just reinstalled Red Dead 2 and was having a blast with it when I remembered Digital Foundry's incredible video from three years ago, discussing all the technical feats. Immediately came here to watch this again and I can only say two things: 1. How this game has aged like fine wine from a technical standpoint - it's a masterpiece in graphical complexity and smooth, robust gameplay which makes me addicted to it like no other game. And 2. How incredibly insightful and detailed the presentation is, in this video - I'm assuming a lot of hard work went into it and it shows. The visuals they've shown here from gameplay are spellbinding. 30 minutes well spend.
If there's anyone who's just discovered this game or are about to boot it up after 3 years, I urge you all : Please watch this video and just appreciate the scale of work that went into making this game. And then play to your heart's content. Explore and experience everything the world has to offer. And for heaven's sake don't rush to complete it. Take your time. Take it all in. There won't be a game like this for quite some time. Cheers !

@@joeldiazdzimbiri1699 Said it when it came out. This was meant for next gen then ( current gen now). You'd still need a beefy PC to Max everything out even now. It's one game that absolutely tanks my setup when maxed out but then again most current titles would too. The best thing about Red Dead 2 is that the game still looks phenomenal on older consoles- loads better than some of the more recently released titles.

@@Dude30977 By PS5, you mean a remaster ? I don't know man. I might be alone here but in my opinion, the only thing the game lacks from a technical standpoint is maybe ray tracing and even that won't drastically change how the game looks I think.
What they should bring to the next gen consoles is a 60 fps update which would be a game changer. Sadly I don't know if Rockstar can be bothered anymore about this community 😔.
But don't worry about that. Go ahead and purchase a copy for the console you prefer. The game still looks gorgeous on my cousin's PS4 and it should look and perform even better on a PS5. Digital Foundry did a video on RDR 2's old gen console versions and explained how the game looks and plays best on the Xbox one x.
The game in its current state is still miles ahead of any other open world title imo. Looks phenomenal irrespective of the platform. You can't go wrong with either an PS5 or an XBOX series X when it's being played in native 4k. Happy gaming 👋🏼

I'm always convinced that Rockstar engine programmers have access to some extra hidden processing power wizardry on each console,than the rest of the devs have.
Seriously. GTA5 looks like a PS4/OX game on 360. RDR2 looks like a PS5/XSX game on PS4 Pro and OX.
GTA 6 is built upon even advance game engine than Red Dead 2 this game is 5 years old and still looks god damn amazing I can't even imagine what GTA 6 will look like.
It's going to be insanity man. This game was developed with the lowest denominator of hardware (Xbox One) and it still looks amazing on even that. The new low denominator will likely be Xbox Series S which is far more powerful than the One.

After Red Dead Redemption 2 the company took approaches to minimize crunch, it's probably not incentivized or even allowed to work over a certain amount, I don't know the exact situation but the byproduct of that is going to be a slower development.

Man this game is truly remarkable in so many ways. If I had to choose one key component that really stands out it would have to be the volumetric clouds. They did such a fantastic job with them and it's by far the most selling point to creating a believable environment. I often find myself just standing at the top of a mountain and looking down over the clouds to the environment below, you can see the light shafts casting around it's insane.
So happy I got the X, absolutely stunning.

After playing RDR 2 on PC for 4 days straight, I couldnt believe my eyes. Its too beautiful to look at. And this video is a great analysis.

Love this game to this very day which I find myself missing from time to time which lures me to play it on PC for maximum pleasure.
It’s good too on one x but I just MUCH prefer the PC experience now days since it supports a very vibrant modding community that breathes extra life to this already masterpiece of a game.
Excellent tech analysis, most I knew already but stating the obvious just makes it more that relevant imo.
I particularly like the level of verbal sophistication and choice of words during the presentation 👌🏼
It matches perfectly with the level of love and dedication the developers clearly put into this game.

I fortunately own both. However, all my friends have a PS4, standard console. Why would I play by myself on an X? That is the X's biggest issue.
3rd party games on the X and 1st party games on the PS4 Pro, since you know Xbox doesn't make any good exclusive games.

RDR2 is truly miraculous - playing on XBox 1X with a 4K projector and a 92” screen and 7 speakers around and it’s mesmerizing. Graphics are so stunningly beautiful I’ve had to pause the game so I can take a picture with phone. Thanks DF for explaining some of how R* did this.

I got it for ps4 but between the 25-30 fps and the weird haze that cinsole games use to up performance i couldnt play it for long. Beyond ready to play it on pc 🥰

It’s the end of 2023, and this game is still by far the best open world game I’ve ever played. The world is so deep and immersive that no other games even came any close. Sure Horizon Forbidden West is gorgeous, but still far from this imo.
