Thanks so much for the clear explanation! I’ve seen these techniques in other videos, but wasn’t entirely clear on what each term referred to. Now that I can match the terms to the techniques, it’ll be easier to think about them and figure out which one to use when! I’m about to embark on a more ambitious color work project than I’ve ever done before, so wish me luck. If all goes well, a friend’s kid is gonna have the most awesome baby blanket ever made 😄
Btw, I don’t know if it even has a name, but I’ve seen and used a technique that’s sort of a hybrid between stranding and tapestry. You have a float, but catch it every 3rd stitch (or 2nd, or 5th, or whatever makes sense for the project). You’re more or less breaking a long float up into several smaller ones. It keeps long floats under control by tacking them to the wrong side, and it’s less visible than tapestry on the right side. Just another option that can come in handy.
Good luck with your upcoming project! I hope it works out beautifully! And yes you can definitely catch floats in stranded colorwork - it makes it much easier to keep good tension, especially for wearables!

I tried tapestry crochet in double crochet stitch according to a picture from a magazine…first time doing color work. When you have to use double crochet, what is the best color work technique to do?
Hi Jeanne - it really depends on the type of project. If you're changing colors mid-row, I actually prefer intarsia whenever possible with taller stitches. That way you don't see the yarn coming up from the row below when you do the color changes. Any of the colorwork techniques can still work though!

What's funny is I just finished my first project like this and I started with tapestry and ended up changing to intarsia about halfway through lol I didn't realize they were two different types of crochet I just thought it was a different way of doing it 😅
