cnet.co/P0OMVk Sure the 2013 Audi S5 is sporty and perhaps a little pricey to boot, but CNET's Brian Cooley also shows you that it has the tech chops to please.
Yeah I was very surprised he said turbocharged instead of supercharged. He never said dual clutch either. Clearly he focuses more on interior tech for this channel and not powertrain. Other than that, nice review.
This car is actually quite spacious up front. I was surprised that it feels bigger in front than a 3/4 series to me. Screw the rear seat people, let them buy their own car.
No kidding. This guy is usually a snob about those type of things. Not to mention he looked under the hood and even said "that's a turbo thing" when referring to the high torque. I lost a little respect for him here.
Ive owned a 2010 audi s5 prestige and sold it for my 2011 audi s4 with the drive select system and all the goodies. The s5 looked better being a coupe and all. It was also the v8 6 speed manual with a great exhaust note. The s4 I have now has the v6 supercharged engine that this new model s5 shares. They are both great cars, but I do not miss the clunky gearbox of the 6 speed manual. The v8 was also terrible on gas. The v6 supercharged is quicker than the 4.2 v8... and I can tell you that from experience. The v8 has the 354 hp true, but the way this v6 supercharged engine applies the 333hp feels way better. The v8 imo just felt like it made the car go... whereas this v6 supercharged actually makes you feel pushed back in your seat when you step on it. IMO sacrifice the exhaust note for the better mpg, better power application, and the sweet fast shifting dct auto transmission. Just my two cents seeing Ive owned both the s4 and s5.
it's only marginally faster now but you're definitely gaining mileage. I know people who went from various 4.2 V8 platforms and get far better numbers with the new 3.0, and it makes more torque all throughout the rev range, peak numbers are irrelevant. Plus an ECU and a supercharger pulley pushes it to roughly 450 HP.. you have to go FI on the 4.2 to get any worthwhile gains and APR's kit costs 13 grand but only makes it marginally faster than if you put 2k in the 3.0 V6
In Serbia, ambulances are manual Peugeot Boxer diesels. Police cars are Peugeot 308's with manual gearboxes. Firetrucks are Mercedes Actros with manuals. Food delivery vans are manual Iveco's or MB Sprinters. Buses are Ikarbus or MAN models with manual gearboxes. Taxis are various European compacts with manual gearboxes. Even military/riot vehicles have manual gearboxes. Just because USA is addicted to automatics, doesn't mean the rest of the world is.
This dude is SO INTENSE to watch. Like having Mike Tyson throwing punches an inch from your nose for 7 and a half minutes! Good review though...just...intense.
whats wrong with having to turn the nob counter-clockwise to go down the list? It makes the most sense. Left is associated with down while right is associated with up, therefore the nob turns left to go down because thats what makes the most sense from the driver seat.
Apparently we've all forgotten that when you turn the dial on an analog radio anti-clockwise you move the tuner DOWN the channels, when you turn clockwise you move UP. Audi engineers simply matched that with this gen MMI.
such a beautiful car. somehow I've already seen two brand new RS5's in my humble little town - 1 white, 1 blue. I'd love to get an M3 and a RS5 and cruise around
Actually all of the stuff you listed are standard, you can only option the new M5 with stuff like automatic trunk, active blind spot detection, BMW Apps, BMW Individual reading lights, electric rear shades, HUD, Soft close doors, surround view, ventilated seats, and night vision. Also it doesnt start from $105k, but $89k.
Question, regarding the smart key. Do you have to take the key out of your pocket and place it into the key slot then push the button to start, or can you simply leave it in your pocket and push the start button, thanks in advance.
Hey Mr. Cooley, I thought this things were supercharged, not turbo charged like the "T" suggests. But I really don't care, since I'm not buying it anyways. Nonetheless great review, keep them coming.
After navigation package I have to spend $1800 extra just to use it for 5 years? or what if I am in some area where there is no T-mobile service .. Dose navigation will work?
The add-ons are just to nickel and dime you, classic vehicle marketing albeit nefarious. I'm glad I watched this review. I'm comparing this to the TT RS, G37, TL (sedan), and 335is. Pretty much coupes that run in the neighborhood of around 50k with 300-350hp. Still deliberating though... Thanks for the good run down on the S5.
Cooley love Audi's. His favorite car in fact so he was a distracted fanboy for this video. Still 1 mistake in over a 100 great review videos in 5+ year is not going to bring him any notches down in my book or get fired by CNET or lose any sleep or lose any respect from the billions of people that don't really care about supercharger vs. turbocharged
I'm glad someone else caught that. The fact that he said it twice shows that he really just didn't know and probably went off the badge. Which is pretty sad since he's degrading the engineering that went into the s/c ( which i've heard is pretty " high tech " ).
I don't drive a 5-speed Civic, but I would rather drive a 5-speed Civic than an Aventador, that's for sure. BTW I've driven more than 10 manual cars in my life, and almost as much automatic ones. I can tell you manual will always be more fun/involving to drive, not to mention they are simple in nature (less likely to break, less parts to break) and of course more light than automatic or automated-manual transmissions.
Not such a good review. The car is great looking. Thats about it. Does the car handle good? How is the performance for the price? This was the car I was going to buy after been driving Porsche for 32 yrs. Talked to many Audi owners. They all were not happy with the car. Looked at the G37 S. Very nice car. Everyone I talked to loved them, no problems. But did not have the performance that I was use to.Then I looked at the Mitsubishi Evo MR. Much more of a 4 door sport car. Now I own it.
i don't understand how you say the hard drive audio systems for ripping music are useless. seems to me that if it just remembered 20gb of music from my ipod or cd's, and i don't have to reach into the glove box every time i want to play music... or i forgot my ipod, that would be a great feature.
I am thinking about getting a 2013 Ford Mustang GT. Here's my question for all you fellow C net car lovers. Should I put a turbo in it, twin turbo, or a supercharger? The question is not about speed, however, you can give your opinion on which would make it the fastest. I want to know which 1 will give my engine less complications down the road such as wear and tear, and is least likely to blow out my engine? All answers are very much appreciated a head of time. No guessing though please. LOL
Can't complain. You can buy a 2013 BMW M5 today for $105,000 and still option leather, sound, rims, and other things you would assume to be free on a 100 grand car
Technically speaking they are all turbos. Depending on the delay you want in acceleration, which is what twin turbo helps prevent since it operates in different rpm zones, single or twin is your choice. Supercharger would most likely have down the road because of the way it is built. Now for your engine. If you drive like a moron everyday don't expect your engine to last as long as if you were driving regularly but a little most sportier. You're engine life depends on its capabilities.
@onDishez If you have the money, get an Audi. Looks 10x better than a Subaru and the NAV is just amazing. If you *might* be able to afford the Audi, then just get the WRX and upgrade stuff yourself. 305 HP on a car that's a few hundred pounds lighter (I think) should feel about the same.
The audi 4.2l v8 has a lot better sound and power deliver is more linear because it isn't a forced induction. The RS5 still has a v8 that I believe has something like 450hp. Also the difference of a few mpg is so minor so it really becomes a personal choice.
Doesn't the MMI rotary knob mimic the intuitive action of the radio volume knob? Why would they engineer it to work opposite of what most people expect? smh
Turbo? Really CNET? I have an Audi S4 and it's not Turbo... it's SUPERcharged. I have videos where you can hear the supercharger whine in my car. Wow CNET, you guys research anything or just believe a badge?
Manuals are always more fun to drive because the driver is directly switching the gears him/herself. It allows for really skilled drivers to get as much power out of the engine as much as possible. However, some automatics switch gears a tiny bit faster a human can but if you want a car to be fun, get it in manual transmission.
Randy Blake Don't get me wrong I get how you feel and how hard it is to say manual is slower, but it's ok to just say the fact these days man, Auto shifts WAY faster.
ok, the A5 is the coupe brother of the A4. it's not truly a compact. by EPA sedan standards? yes. but by all other practical standards? no. it's a luxury compact coupe that goes with the luxury compact sedan. Audi and other European marks don't do the "compact plus" thing where the compact cars are actually "midsize" and the midsize is actually "large" (i.e. Honda). compact is compact and midsize is midsize. therefore, the space lost when the car became a coupe caused the interior volume to fall into the "subcompact" class.
same engine that's in most audis nowadays huh? I'm not sure I like the fact that the same engine is in the a6,a7,a8,s4,s5 and so-on.. Audi used to have a nice array of different engine sizes/aspirations. Now they're mostly supercharged v6s. its too bad
Im conflicted, on one hand supercharged V6 makes sense and it fits the car, but on the other hand a V6 making about as much power as a camry TRD on a 3800lb+ car just sounds a bit dissapointed when spending that much money.

I much prefer bmw interior, simple but feel like quality.
I love how he says its turbo charged - twice - as we clearly see the supercharger pulley spinning...
Yeah I was very surprised he said turbocharged instead of supercharged. He never said dual clutch either. Clearly he focuses more on interior tech for this channel and not powertrain. Other than that, nice review.
its a supercharger not a turbo

Sometimes less is more! This car doesnt need all the touchpad and overcrowded tech..it has all it needs nice and simple!
Oh my.. Can't believe he said turbocharged! Love his reviews still.. Surprised though at the goof

What MPG did you get with the v6?
@@jonah9165 just a guess i think with normal mixed driving speeds of "fast, and not so fast" it would be around the 18-24mpg range
it's only marginally faster now but you're definitely gaining mileage. SamuraiX6288 yes it is. lol

Keep em coming Brian! Awesome reviews.
love your videos, engine is supercharged, not turbo

Completely unintuitive dude.
M. H. Left is down, right up on most cars I know.
One of my most favorite cars ever.
I like how Audi at least makes the shifter feel and look like a manual on the S cars
This is one of the best series on Cnet
Supercharged, like My CTS-V. Picking and S5 convertible Wednesday. Looking forward to it. Thanks for the video.

@@salmanza5568anything that isn't touch screen
thats gonna be one hell of a wait, almost went through the same with our Q5 but just settled for one on the lot :/

Nice review. I liked it!
I agree with the MMI knob. In my dads A6 i always turn it the wrong way at first.
Solid review, informative and to the point. Review the RS5!

nope, unless you have the base model, and that mainly happens to the A5 models. Mine's a premium plus and it has push button start.
watching it in 2018
I just bought the new A5. I love it!!
I love this car, just wish atleast Motortrend would review this.
The S5 and the RS5 are my favorite

It's supercharged for sure
You can avoid the gear-hunting by simply putting it in S mode.

@christianlawson1 RS5 has the V8. It's also got a price tag that'll give you a small heart murmur.
supercharger

Is this one turbo charged? I thought all the gas engine 3.0 Audis were supercharged.
I know it says "V6T" on the side, but that's a "mechanical" or "belt-driven" turbocharger. In the US we call it a supercharger.
I understand your point, at least it was valid unlike most responses I get.
Looks cool
elaborate "destroy"?
the shift times are only less than a second slower. plus, the fun using a manual compensates for the lost shift time.

Love how no one filming this pickup up on the fact that this car isn't turbo
so what does the T stand for on the side of the car. we all know its a sc under the hood.
Actually, BMW's iDrive is also counter clockwise to scroll down, so, that's nothing "abnormal" in teh luxury brands.
they didn't make it slower, the V6 is turbocharged, down sized. They did that because of better fuel economy. Missed the V8 tough..
You're right. LOL I just went outside to check.
Brian!Chek out the audi RS5
still waiting for the Altima!!! (or maybe the Accord) =]
It's a supercharged v6 not turbocharged despite the T you see on it
Its supercharged btw,
i think its more of a branding name now.
like for the "CLS 63", not 6.2 litres anymore, 5.5 biturbo.
Im conflicted, on one hand supercharged V6 makes sense and it fits the car, but on the other hand a V6 making about as much power as a camry TRD on a 3800lb+ car just sounds a bit dissapointed when spending that much money.
you can make an s5 almost 600whp with a few simple mods, you can’t do that on a stock block camry engine

Turbocharged? that's definitely an intercooler on top of that engine boss...
