Adrian the owner of this RS5 found us like most of our customers now here on UA-cam. He explained to us the situation with the car that it might need probably timing chain. Again the car was standing for a long long time and it came on a recovery truck from a different workshop. After we inspect the car we find this...............

Very interesting. You handled a difficult situation and made it look easy. Clearly a master technician who not only is talented but also sensitive to his customer's needs. Not found in most mechanics. Also, convinced me that I won't get another Audi. Pulling the engine to change timing belts is bad engineering.

Well this is not true in all Audi's, I think this is just something of a big engine in a relatively small car. With a 2.0 TFSI or 1.8TFSI I can't believe this should be done, neither with the 3.0TFSI (but I don't know if thats delivered in this car). I've got a Polo 1.2 TSI with 300.000km, chain has never been replaced. Car runs on LPdi (liquid phase direct injection of LPG) - no soot produced, so no rock hard particles wearing down the chain I assume... Also It doesnt have a cam adjuster, so one less part to wear either way! But if the chain fails (like many did, this one did get a modified one in the first years as well) - you do not have to remove the engine. (logically imo hahaha)

Cars and engines do break. It's not a common issue - these engines have very few issues so I don't understand how could this turn somebody off. I've seen some VERY unreliable engines running a long time no issues and I've seen some very reliable engines break. That's normal. It's mechanics, moving parts and things go wrong. There is no such thing as an invincible engine or well good luck finding one. As a BMW owner I can tell that all brands I've looked into have problems, some have more others less but there is 0 guarantee for anything in world of mechanics. My 2004 BMW E46 has 440k km on the counter and still running with it's 1st timing chain but still some things could go wrong even today.
@@bq5577x I have the 2.0 in my b7 A4 and the timing engine has to come out to be replaced. I’ve had it done and it was so expensive I could’ve bought a better car.

The good thing about these cars is that the owner dont need to be worried about rising gas prices as it is only a small fraction of the running cost anyway.

When my b6s4 jumped the exhaust cam on bank 2 (drivers in the us) was about that far out. The plastic guide on that heads chains broke apart completely and ate the piston and spring. Wouldn’t be the first time I’ve seen a vag engine jump only 1-2 teeth at timing failure.

Luckyli, I watched this video after I bought my RS5 V8. ;) I am owning from 2015 and has 120000km on board. As you also mentioned these are prety issue free engines, I did not have any problem with the engine or even with the whole car by now. Nothing. However there migth be exceptions, as for all type of cars. Obviosly I change the oils and consumables regularly and I use only OEM parts. I am using the car only for long trips and on track days. I did carbon clean with nuts but did not have serious carbon deposit on valves. Love the car.
How is the car now? 1 year up date?

Before buying the car take it to an Audi authorized service and ask for a general test. And the most important check the car's service history. The most important is the regular oil changes. The engine and gearbox are very sensitive to the oil change. Most of faults' root cause is the missed or wrong oil change. @@ssingh358

I was between an A5, S5, and thought about an RS5 from the B8.5 Gen. I settled on the A5 because it’s sooo much more approachable considering I do my own maintenance/ repairs. And I get my speed addiction from motorcycles hahaha

Depends how you treats them also. Where you live, climate if it’s cold and below zero a lot than a lot more west and tear on cold starts etc, salt and snow build up, hard acceleration and revving, drifts burn outs etc.

I have this exact problem with my RS5 right now. Been chasing the misfires for nearly 5 months. Plugs, coils, carbon clean, new injectors. Done it all myself. Be checking this next week. If my timings out. Sad to say. But goodbye car. I've poured about 5k in to it already(mostly for the gearbox) and a 7k bill is beyond my reach now. But thanks for the advice. Great video. 👍
Mine is not an RS5 and not even an Audi, but I'm in the exact same situation, I have been chasing a misfire on one single cylinder from the day I got the car. Got a new timing chain, plugs, lambdas, timing solenoids, coils, tried all kinds of injector cleaners, additives, high octane fuels, prayed to car Gods. At this point I'm afraid that it's got low compression in one cylinder and if that's true then bye bye Alfa Romeo.
Damn man, that sucks. I know the feeling, dumped $6k into my transmission and like clockwork, started having issues with motor (LT1 with 140k miles). Hope you can ditch your RS5 without losing too much money. I bet you’re gutted about having to get rid of it.
@@ultygamer Leaky Injektor maybe. You could remove it and clean it with an ultrasonic cleaner and some carb cleaner as cleaning agent. Guy called AliMECH made a video recently.
@@ultygamer i had a mis fire on 2 cylinders, chased it for a while, the misfire counter only registered at idle, otherwise the engine ran normal, turned out to be leaky injectors. you can test leaky injectors, at normal operating temp, shut off the engine and check the high pressure fuel reading, it should increase, mine decreased quickly to 5bar, it should have increased from 30bar to 50ish bar
I mean.. im all for doing things myself, but with cars like these..it really pays to let pros handle it from the jump. You'd have spent less not being cheap.

Super video again- Buying an older Audi really is a lottery when you look at the work involved to get this car’s engine back to spec again. That’s why I buy Japanese cars and bikes, the sort I can service myself. Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate the technical specs of an engine like this but they are never going to have the reliability of a V8 by Toyota for instance as the build quality always seems lacking.

Considering depreciation, huge maintenace costs, complex overengineering, etc..., it's safe to say, that we have an endless money pit car, right here. It's not for anyone, that's for sure. 7000 pounds price tag for this job, confirms it.

This is how audis are. Here in the uk, used audis can be bought for next to nothing once they hit about 120k or 10 years or so. The prices vary wildly of course, but you can get them crazy cheap.
The reason is, they are a nightmare to work on, accessing one thing creates a chain of things to disassemble to reach it, and the engine is usually full of plastic items waiting to break.
Used audis are essentially ewaste, just waiting for a sucker to buy.
@@Nbomber I disagree. If well looked after, particularly the diesels they will run for ages. Same with anything, if you look after it and maintain it properly then it will last you. if yoy skip services to save a few ££ then you will pay for it in the long run. The RS5 is clearly a far more complex car than say a B8 A5 (which I own) and this video confirms it.
@@darkspeed62 but the fact remains, they are dirt cheap once they hit about that age and its because of the maintenance cost.
all the servicing in the world wont stop bushes wearing out, clutch wearing out, timing belt or chain needing done, water pump going, that hydraulic engine mount they use, or all of the plastic parts.
And when those parts need replaced, its a huge job to get to most of them due to the designs of these cars.
the timing belt for example, requires most of the front of the car to be removed, headlights, front clip (which btw, doubles as a coolant pipe, so you can add coolant to the cost), etc.
removing the sump requires removing the front subframe, and with that, a good portion of the awd system.
So, i respectfully disagree. servicing cant prevent these jobs from needing done eventually, in fact, they are routine jobs.
And that is why people just get rid of them.

They high performance cars..thy not built for 10 year plus. Get yourselves a Toyota or a Lexus Corolla. Only a retard buys a high performace car with 50k miles on it..I personally wont consider anything over 20k miles..even less.
Great video! I only wish I could have watched it a couple of months ago. I just did the upper oil sump on my 2015 RS5, so since the engine had to come out, I did the timing chains, guides and tensioners too. It's a big job, but lots of fun. Just for future reference, the cam adjusters do have timing marks on them that are supposed to be lined up with little "half moon" marks on the head. It's not in the Audi repair manual, but apparently it is possible to put the adjusters on in a bad position. I learned about this from a Lamborghini mechanic who works on a lot of Huracans which have a very similar engine.
3.0tfsi have them , but this doesn’t, reason why they have them sometimes is that the adjuster didn’t have grove alway around and you have to fit it only to one position for the oil feed otherwise it will not work

Majority of the cars on the road today use plastic somewhere in there chain guide setups. Everything from GTR's & M3's to GT350's & SLR McLaren. Chances are your favorite car uses them too.

How has yours held up?
I've owned a volks cc vr6 4mosion exec 4 motion for 6 or7 yrs and I hit 120 at least once a day.. Outside of water pump, battery fuel pump brakes rotors, trans mission oil changes. sun roof fixing front struts. It's been the best and fastest car I've owned in a while. but I think people need to learn preemptive maintenance and listen to your car. Please follow the maintenance book on your car

To get the starter done in the car, service manual suggests dropping the transmission. Gonna say b8 rs5 makes for a compelling reason to buy an e90/92 m3) at least you don’t need to remove the engine to do the rod bearings.
In Greece an E92 M3 in good condition is around 40-45k€ right now though and an RS5 same condition around 30k€…

I`m also passionate about cars and mecanichs in general - would have a curiosity maybe you can shed some ligt on the topic:) Why do diesel cars only have Tubors and none has a supercharger - at least I dont know any audis from 2005 onwards with supercharger on diesel engine - is there any limitation on whyt they put them on petrol ones?

The reason for this is to push people to buy new cars instead of paying the premium to repair an otherwise fine vehicle. This way they are increasing their new car sales and used car sales.

I enjoy learning how and what you do to diagnose and fix issues with Audis. In regards to RS5... Would love to drive and own it but not pay for the costs to fix - LoL! I am happy and satisfied with my 2017 4M 3.0T supercharged Q7 - Hopefully I see a transmission service fluid and filter,front final drive and center diff fluid service on your channel one of these days ;). Looking into a used 2015-2017 Sq5 (petrol only due to residing in Canada...) in the coming week(s) & month(s). Any suggestions and/or tips? what to lookout when it comes to visual inspection top to bottom?
