The Gillette Guard may be light plastic, but it is no joke. Two passes BBS for me. I bought 200 cartridges from Ebay several years back and a bunch of handles. I love it. It's specific to the Indian market, but if Gillette introduced it in the US with a better handle, it would smoke the Fusion ProShield or whatever the latest thing is in sales.
The Gillette Guard is, I think, a great little razor for a cheapo razor. You can buy them very cheap in bulk over Amazon, mailed from India. Takes a while (about two weeks to arrive here in the UK.) Gillette did a lot of research before launching this razor, specifically for the third world market. They found that men in hot countries have to be up very early to start work early so as to have an early finish as they need to avoid the extreme heat of the noonday sun. That being the case, they usually have to shave in the early morning darkness and as they used to shaved blind, sitting crosslegged on the floor, with no electric light, using cheap Chinese DE razors and blades. As you may imagine, it was quite a perilous experience. Gillette noted all these details, realising they had to design a razor that was very cheap to produce, as they had to undercut the pricing of the Chinese offerings, and design a razor with some kind of guard so as to make it foolproof to use in darkness. I think they did a very good job in designing the razor and by so doing won a huge share of a vast, rapidly developing market. Have another, closer, more thorough appraisal, and I'm sure you will agree.
I know this is an older video but I recently tried the Wilkinson Sword Classic and had the same experience. I tried a Gillette Silver Blue (one of my favorites) and had a much more enjoyable shave. The odd thing is I've used Wilkinson Sword blades in other razors and they have been fine. I guess it goes to show it takes a bit of experimenting to find the right blade for any given razor. Thanks for the video!
The guard is very efficient when I need a no frills no irritation shave great video and content as always! It's kind of interesting to see how Gillette created it
The Wilkinson Sword classic is such a good de razor especially for the price I used it today. Thanks great shave. I use the Gillette Wilkinson Sword blades from India and think of you.
Great shave. I saw the Mantic59 interview video and it was great. It was nice to get to know you a little bit better through that video. Can't wait for the next video and have a great week
I use the Wilkinson Sword Classic(black version of the razor) with Gillette Blue blades and get irritation on the neck when I go against the grain. I also used BIC Astor blades and got irritation on the neck even when I shaved after more then a month(in that month I trimmed with a beard trimmer). Usually when I shave more then a 3 day beard I get no irritation.
Love my Cremo Horsehair Brush I reviewed recently. Those Cremo Reserve Blend Gift Sets were only $7.50 each. That Cremo Brush was worth that alone. Horsehair brushes don't need a long soak at all. It's a great painter brush.
Hi Ken- Nice shave and comparison video; thank you! Love to see you use the Cremo horsehair; it’s a great little brush! I hope you are having a great week and all the best!
Dark brushes from horse hair are usually softer. Like from Badger. I was very surprised that on Black Friday the lotion from Pinaud is cheaper than in our country. Thank!
Ok, so that was alot braver than I might have been. However, in honor the bottle of Pinaud Clubman on the sink, I brought out my 1964 SuperSpeed, Gillette Silver Blue, Clubman Shave oil, Clubman Shave Soap, my no-name badger brush I bought in my teens, and finished with Pinaud Clubman Classic Vanilla after shave. Thanks Ken, it's always a pleasure spending shave time with a Kensurfs video.
Same as the last comment late to the party, I have both razors which r great for weekends away, I have 2 passes with the Gillette and finish with the Wilkinson using a personna blue blade. Maybe not the best shave but good enough for a night out.
Great shave Ken, I have that Classic Wilkinson Sword but it's been an age since I used it. A fine travel razor. Have to say we share the same favourite all rounder the Merkur 34c, one of my first and favourites. Thanks Ken and hope the return to work has been smooth.
I just tried the Guard today. I still love my Gillette Slim Adjustable and my first safety razor - a Fat Handle Tech - will always have sentimental value. My Vikings Blade and Twig Thorn are fun. But if i have to get through TSA or I'm in a hurry the Guard does an amazing job especially for the price and it's FAST 😎👍 Thanks for another great video and have a fabulous day 😁
I personally love Clubman. Joe from Queens really likes that Shick razor, it's his go to travel razor. He says because he doesn't care if it gets lost.
There is some speculation that the Gillette Guard has an open comb because it is marketed heavily in developing countries where many people don't shave every day. Open combs are generally believed to be better at cutting longer hair. My take is that, beyond a certain point of growth, this is true because inch-long hairs wrap around the head of a closed bar razor. Shorter hairs will probably just pass the safety bar with the foam. And they would definitely clog a cartridge razor, I learned the hard way when I shaved my armpits for the first time in my life. It took me almost half an hour to get that paintbrush of hair out of that Sensor Excel for women. As far as the Wilkinson Classic is concerned -- DE shavers tend to like either the razor but not the blades, or the blades, but with a different razor. I don't really like either. After several years of DE shaving I can handle almost every razor and every blade, but I prefer open combs and Parker TTOs as far as razors are concerned, and Astra, Rapira (especially the Platinum Lux), Voskhod and Feather blades. The advantage of Wilkinson blades is that they can be bought all over Germany (which is where I live), including rural areas. I found myself stuck with having to use up an entire box once. I got them from someone who had accidentally purchased them, not knowing that they don't work with cartridge razors.
I can attest to the fact that the Gillette Guard makes short work of up to 8 days hair growth. It's not just the open comb, but also the larger blade gap. It slices through beard almost as good as a Merkur Slant. Illness prevents me from shaving every day. I use the Gillette Guard most of the time ever since I stopped DE shaving in 2016 and it works fantastically well. Proof that Gillette can design something good these days if they put their minds to it.
Great shave! I started wet shaving in 06 and the Wilkinson sword was my first and only razor for my first 3 years of wet shaving. If this razor was available in the US / Canadian stores, I think we would see more wet shavers.
Hey Ken, that Wilkinson sword razor is readily available at our Sainsburys and Tesco's supermarket's, the lime cream is not really, you would find the Gillette can shaving foam original, and also the Wilkinson sword shaving gel . But that lime cream you would only really find in a chemist, or pharmacy like we have a national chain chemist called Boots. But thats about it. Thats UK by the way. 👍
@@kensurfs yea Its called M&S now, its a high end quality store very similar to Hy vee i think you have. Got my Christmas turkey from there last year! 😄👍
I have the Gillette version (The Gillette Super Click) of this kind of DE. Found it at 7/11 in Thailand. Perfect for the DE shaver who forgot his DE but doesn't want to use a cartridge razor.
Ordered the Gillette guard from India with 5 extra blades for 5 bucks, can't wait to try it. I really enjoy your videos keep up the good work and don't change a thing!!
Hi Ken. The Wilkinson Sword Classic DE razor is by far the mildest razor I have in my den. it surprises me, that your shave wasn't comfortable. Yes, it could be the blade. I suggest you have a very close look on the razor head. I have had several of them and some have sharp edges and imperfections from production. File and rub these off and you might get a much better feel.
Hi Ken, catching up on your vids. Went all the way back to your initial knife reviews lol. Its great that you do these kinds of reviews so folks starting out (like myself) have information on what is available and where. I'm still catching up on all your old videos but in my light searching on the internet, across all the wet shavers, I have not been able to find someone who talks about the aggressiveness of razors and perhaps some good pairings with razor blades. I don't have as many products to talk about or experience with as you but that would make for a good vid. Thanks for fueling my desire to get into wet shaving and join this youtube community in sharing shave experiences. All the best in 2019, Mag.
Finally the interview is up! Good to know more about you Ken, although your voice did sound different in the interview, I much prefer the sound on your videos.
i have been considering Sword Classic but picked up a Rick Harrison Microtouch "Weishi" as backup to Merkur 34C for five bucks.. Just finishing my first bottle of Clubman ever. Try some WSP Gaelic Tweed Tallow for St. Patricks Day Shave.
Ahhh fond memories of my first DE that got me into this hobby (read obsession). I thought i would save money from the expensive carts.... how wrong i was 😂. Cheers Ken. Oh I haven’t seen the Gillette in the UK but i will keep an eye out.
So, I blame Ken for MY obsession! That said, the 60 bucks I dropped on shave stuff the other day could have gone to the pursuit of unspeakable things with highly questionable people. At least this way, the wife knows where I am, what I'm doing, and that I'll smell nice in the end. The worst I get is a roll of the eyes and an audible "harumph!"
Great video Ken, I haven’t missed one since I started watching, you always do a great job. What would you say are the best affordable shave brushes ? Sir, Thanks for your video. I already watched your interview with mantic59 as your follower!! I am surprised. Gillette Guard in your hand. Here (India) this razor highly advertised and most popular. Its price 23 rupees. Astra, Personna blades value around 18 rupees per blade when we receive from amazon global.
Hello, I'm told the WS classic is supposed to be the one to start off with here in England, Im not impressed with the blades that come with this razor, they cut me on my very first DE shave, and I haven't gone back to those blades since. I tried the super max stainless and they were better. All the best.
Nice one Ken, as you suspected the Wilkinson Sword classic does work very well with blades the user prefers. I'm not a fan of the blades that come with the razor as I find them very tuggy & a bit dull. Throw an Astra green, Nacet or even a Feather in there & it's a different beast altogether.
@@kensurfs Yeah, I just tried out a Wilkinson Sword blade today, after not using them since I started shaving, and I had the same effect I got from a Merkur blade when I started using my 23C. Awful! I used it in my Progress, which I haven't had a problem with with any blade I have used. Lots of weepers. I think I'll just be avoiding the last of those till it's a choice between them or the Rockwell blades I got with my 6C, and I've got the better part of a C count of Derby Premiums, which are still better, for me, than WS, Merkur, or Rockwell. I should try my classic with an Asco when I finally open it.
Gillette guard is of Indian origin. It is actually the poor man's razor. But many people use it even when they can afford much expensive stuff either because it works well for them or because it is the only single blade cartridge razor out there and they are used to double edge safety razors and need one while traveling.
It is so funny the different reactions people have from the same razor. Personally, I have found the Wilkinson Sword Classic to be an exceptional razor, plastic construction or not, and to be at the very least equal to if not superior to some well known razors. I find it gentle yet highly efficient and never any irritation from it. I watched, and understand I comprehend that watching something no matter how closely is not the same as experiencing it, and it seemed that you were maneuvering the WSC with a considerable amount of pressure. You did not exert, or at least seem to, that same amount of force with the other razor and this could be the source of the "sting" your detected. Just an observation. Certainly not a argument or debate. ;-)
Gillette guard is quite common razor in India, available is most supermarkets.....wilkinson I've never seen...i always carry Gillette guard while traveling.....very good razor....anyone can go atg easily
Hi ken, must say the WS razor is a good cheap razor, a bit mild, so I use a feather blade in it, but like you said the blade choice for razors makes the difference, anyway best wishes from the UK.
Must admit I haven't seen that disposable razor or that cream in the U.K before but I'll keep my eyes out as the cream sounds good. The gillette classic razor pretty good though for the price (£4.00 ish) even if you just use it for a travel razor. You should get your son to do a cameo in one of your vids. Must be cool to have Kensurfs as your Dad! 👍
That plastic Wilkinson sword and the blades that come with it were the beginning and the end of me DE shaving. That combo would cut me all the time and it was a horrible experience. Soap was proraso green, so don't blame the soap 😀
Another great video, ken! I have one suggestion for the channel, maybe consider playlists for those that want to jump to a category on the channel such as “vintage” “cologne” “supermarket shaves” etc. just a thought.
Very Interesting, I always thought the WSord razor was a very mild razor. Maybe I was wrong. Can you do a shave with the plastic feather. That would be interesting
I got a Harry's razor set for Christmas... I tried it just for the hell of it... it's a great starter set for a 13 yr old... my face was irritate for the whole day... the shave cream and balm have a weird scent to them.. I'll stick with Edwin Jagger and TOBS Cedarwood..
Brave guy Ken. would't see me using those for viewers sake...Lol. Nice shave though, supermarket or not. It's ll about the comfort for me. Not knocking the idea to use readily available items, but, a little research goes a long way. Thanks for bringing this forward, many will get the idea that cheap ain't great. Comfort is everything now a days, but can be had using less expensive items. Good job bringing this forward. Appreciate you doing this. Enjoy!
Ohhh. Been waiting to see ya use that Gillette Guard. 😁 I saw that interview video the other day. Pretty cool. I now know how you got you’re name. 😎👍🏼💈
Well, if you wish... That could be interesting. I just want to know weather those Rapira blades worth it or not. The idea is that they are very inexpensive and medium aggressive, like Astra (as far as i know) and Derby, and who knows, may be that could be a more affordable alternative:D If you are really interested, you can also try Sputnic (i think the true classics of soviet shaving) - the idea for “Soviet shaving” videos✔️
Another good shave, Ken, thanks! I don't see what the desire is for these cheap razors that are barely a step above the disposables. You can get a good razor that will last your (and your children's) lifetime for not much more. But, like they say, everyone's mileage may vary, or as they say at fancy colleges, "de gustibus et coloribus non est disputandum."
I really enjoyed watching your interview it was really nice learning how everything came to be on your channel thank you for sharing with us hope everything is well 👍
@@Hippo1251985 Sure? I haven't seen them here. But I ordered two giftsets online. Last year I bought a Giftset from Rossmann It was a Weishi Razor. Not compareable at all with the quality of the Wilkinson. At least the blades of both razors came from Feintechnik Eisfeld and were from good quality.

This Gillette guard is very popular in India. Recently they have released a 3 bladed version.
Certainly not a argument or debate. ;-)
WolfRanger2008 I think better blades make that razor excellent 👍💈
Interesting video Ken. Don't care for those razors but enjoyed the comparison.
Tim Omick The blades are not the best👍💈
Gillette guard is quite common razor in India, available is most supermarkets.....wilkinson I've never seen...i always carry Gillette guard while traveling.....very good razor....anyone can go atg easily
Hi ken, must say the WS razor is a good cheap razor, a bit mild, so I use a feather blade in it, but like you said the blade choice for razors makes the difference, anyway best wishes from the UK.
Paul Charlesworth Thank you Paul🇬🇧🇬🇧Go Newcastle...lol
@@kensurfs think go Leeds utd sounds better lol.
Chris Chandler Thank you👍💈
I’m not really sure why but I get a Steve Buscemi vibe from you
Benjamin Cox Boardwalk Empire👍👍💈
Kensurfs great show. I’m on season 4. He was also great in the sopranos
He also REALLY resembles the actor Dylan Baker.
In a good way, Ken! Lol
That plastic Wilkinson sword and the blades that come with it were the beginning and the end of me DE shaving. That combo would cut me all the time and it was a horrible experience. Soap was proraso green, so don't blame the soap 😀
Great shave ken and I really enjoyed the interview at wcs
Another great video, ken!
I have one suggestion for the channel, maybe consider playlists for those that want to jump to a category on the channel such as “vintage” “cologne” “supermarket shaves” etc. just a thought.
wildcats720 👍👍
Very Interesting, I always thought the WSord razor was a very mild razor. Maybe I was wrong. Can you do a shave with the plastic feather. That would be interesting
Roger Duran I’ll see if I can find one👍💈
Hey Ken, great comparison video. Enjoyed your interview with mantic59.
Would you consider uploading your videos in 1080p? Thanks.
Mohammad Khalifa Hassan I have, but dozens of subscribers complained that they wouldn’t play on their devices👍💈
@@kensurfs thanks for your response.

Rob B 👍💈
Great video, I use Gillette 7 o'clock super stainless green or kay blades in the Wilkinson Sword Classic razor, the works really well for me :)
Kurt Antonsen 👍👍💈💈
Extremely late to the party here.
Thanks for sharing the video, Ken. Cheers!
Enjoy!
Terry M Thanks Terry👍💈
Great video nice comparison shave 👍
Stephen Smoot Thanks Stephen👍💈
What's the difference between this and a safety razor?
You had a good amount of growth Ken, should’ve pulled out the R41.

Hello, Kensurfs, can you do a comparison of two Russian blades: Astra and Rapira Platinum Lux on your Merkur. Which one is sharper and smoother?
Pocick FAN how about voskhod?
Well, if you wish... That could be interesting. I just want to know weather those Rapira blades worth it or not. The idea is that they are very inexpensive and medium aggressive, like Astra (as far as i know) and Derby, and who knows, may be that could be a more affordable alternative:D
If you are really interested, you can also try Sputnic (i think the true classics of soviet shaving) - the idea for “Soviet shaving” videos✔️
Pocick FAN 👍👍
Another good shave, Ken, thanks! I don't see what the desire is for these cheap razors that are barely a step above the disposables. You can get a good razor that will last your (and your children's) lifetime for not much more. But, like they say, everyone's mileage may vary, or as they say at fancy colleges, "de gustibus et coloribus non est disputandum."
David Kimberly 👍👍💈
Gillette guard is the best cartridge razor I think Gillette ever made
👍👍
I am currently using my grandfather's log Gillette Aristocrat razor. I will never go back to Cartridge razors.
Old Gillette Aristocrat. Apologies for the typo
Both razors didn't sound like a vintage Gillette, is that possible?
Borys Hawrysz vintage Gillette’s are better 👍💈
Iska blades kitne time chalta hsi

I saw the Wilkinson in a Drugstore in Germany yesterday and it costs under three euros
capital f 👍👍💈
@@kensurfs Yes, they are allmost everywhere in the stores. Sadly, the new, "all metal" Wilkinson Sword Classic is not yet awailable in Germany
@@captainbackflash it was available twice once around October 4 weeks then around Christmas as a gift set
@@captainbackflash I am sure as I nearly bought the single razor and a friend of mine got the gift set. They were sold at DM. The single razor was advertised along with better handles for the Wilkinson cartridge type, the kit version was just placed with other kit options
Great shave ken so how did you liked the gilette guard razor?
joy ghosh It was very light, but it worked👍💈
That was a really great comparison Ken! thanks for doing this and giving us your thoughts
