    I have repeat tourist customers that come from hundreds of miles away... I have customers who keep coming back because I took the time to get to know their names even remember what they like to drink... I have customers who are now regulars but only because I took the time to get to know them personally and to try to hook them up in whatever ways I could. You’re right.. waiting tables is getting paid to learn basic life skills. I like it a lot more than I thought i would(I was a line cook for 15 years)

    Hi! I just started waitressing in a "small" bakery that is really popular and very busy. My first time experience. My approach to life is being nice and lovely to people and establishing great relationship with everyone, coworkers and customers. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE ALL YOUR ADVICE!! YOU'RE AMAZING AND GREAT THANK YOU!!! I'd like to hear more advice on what to focus on when you're a beginner and not to look weird to customers when you're over courteous. Thank you so much!!!

      Thanks! Over courteous just means you're compensating for nervousness with politeness, which is a standard thing to do unknowingly. I used to do it all the time. The best thing is to have a few standard responses to typical first reactions of guests. Most of the time guests will respond in a limited number of ways to your opening move, so you can usually respond to their style once you read them accurately enough to move forward effectively with ease. That's why being able to smile and laugh is important or just relate to someone person to person connection in a non verbal way. Sometimes you just need to let the guest know that you're there for them genuinely and as silly as that sounds, they'll get it without a lot of words. Cheers and good work sounds like you got it already :-)

    Try to make them laugh. Or imagine that when you're at the table you are there to ensure that they get the maximum value from their experience at your restaurant. Remember without you they could order all the shittiest things off the menu and have a pretty mediocre experience, so you're there to ensure that you give them the best recommendations so they get the most bang for their buck and they walk away feeling like they got more in value than they rendered :-)

    How would you handle repeat guests that always ask for you, and then start asking you about personal matters that you didn't bring up, never discuss, and you never have asked of them? Example being they start asking you about your relationship status, and you are extremely private about that. When this happened to me, it was a retired couple that asked, and I gave them a vague answer, and then tried to change the topic as I was delivering their food with another server. She then asked if I was going to get married, and at that time I had a bit of the broken heart from a girl I thought I had a future with, and I told her that I didn't feel comfortable talking about my private life with customers. She then got angry, and said that she didn't know that she was just a customer, so "I'll just have a refill on my tea, waiter." I immediately apologized and explained that I'm a very private person, and I only talk about stuff like that with literally my two closest friends. She said "and bring the check. For now on well request to not be seated in your section". Now I didn't really care that much because they only tipped like 5 on a 40, so whatever, but to this day I can't for the life of me figure out what a better way would have been to handle customers prying into my private life. Suggestions? thanks

      Fuck them. You are in the right. However, you could have said guest and not customer, or just left it without the identification of roles.

      @@TrueGritProductions that is good advice. That goes back to your lesson about choosing your words to make guests feel relaxed. Wish I had this type of knowledge from my trainer! Take care!

    I personally am sooooooo ready to leave the restrnt./fd svc. industry. I would LOVE, at least for the temporary short term to just have a simple retail job. I would love to stock shelves AT MY OWN PACE, yet still productively. I did it 11 yrs. ago in college and I would love to return to it for my temporary situation. So fucking sick and tired of the "go, go, go, now, now, now" nature of food svc. I can do fast-paced and love staying busy, but more at a productive pace instead of rushed. Ugh.

    Hi, should I give the same quality service to repeat customers although they're don't always sit at my table?
    A lot of times I feel awkward serving people sitting in a co workers table..

    • @TrueGritProductions
      @TrueGritProductions  7 років тому +1

      My experience has been only to serve people seated in my assigned section. I'd just go by and say hello once or twice if possible, or ask the co worker with manager approval if you can take their table and they take your next one.

    Another tip for any young teenagers or college students looking for a job. DON'T apply to Panera. Just a waste of time. They treat their workers like garbage and sometimes expect you to stay on top of 10 different things, and then bitch when one of those tasks is behind by 5 min. I lasted there for a month partly because of my fault, but the other half was their poor comm., coord., and no compassion. Also, communication is key. Misperceptions can snowball and bite you back in the ass quickly.
