- Your first day as a waitress/waiter will be exciting and stressful! If you are a new waiter or new waitress in the Food and Beverage industry, you have to know in advance few things that will make your first day at work a little easier! You have to know how to be a good waitress/ waiter.

In this Part One, waiter training video we will discuss the most important things to know or the things you should learn even before you put your food on the restaurant floor and on your first day as a restaurant server so you can have a better chance to be accepted by your coworkers and have an easier start at your new job:
1. Learn to carry a tray with drinks and food

3. Learn the food menu, the wine list, and the cocktail list
4. Learn the table numbers and the seat number of each table
5. Learn how to set a table up

i’m most nervous about not knowing the menu well and forgetting which table has what
It takes a week or two to learn the menu perfectly! You just have to put the effort! Remembering the table's order will take little longer! The best thing is that you know what exactly scares you, so you can now start working to overtake your fears! Don't let it linger!

Hello, Syhrh! Congrats on your first job! You will do well, don't be scared. It is normal to have a little anxiety because it is the first time in your life that you will work in a real restaurant! Make sure, you prepare as much as you can and then once you hit the floor, you will see how everything comes natural to you. Give yourself a few days and it will feel much, much better!
My advice is to follow the tutorial for: First day at work as a waitress. Google it and it will pop up from WaitersNetwork.com! You will have much easier time.

It’s my first shift as a waiter in 1 hour. I’m scared. I’m nervous. I’m a really slow writer and I’m scared incase I spell something wrong. I’m also scared incase I can’t find the table. @@summerrrr188 It has been great! A week in, I was being very patient with learning and was observing EVERYTHING that others did. I had times in the first week, where I thought "fuck this, I can't remember these stuff, I'd rather quit". But after the first week, I got hang of it. Started understanding everything and started remembering the menu, which made me happy! I finally got it all down and at the end of the second week I felt accomplished! Don't worry guys! The first week will be hard, but observe everything! You will start understanding and getting all the teqniques down, trust me! In all and all, it was the best experience I could have chose for my first job! Being a waiter is very cool! You will get to know a lot of different people, some may be a grumpy, but trust me if you smile and keep ur own mood up! Nothing will stop you👌💪
I wanna be a waitress when im 18 but im just scared of forgetting the menu, the table, and all the rude people that technically make you feel like dying.
Don't worry, no one has died yet because of workign as a waiter! Learn as much as possible! JOin the online course- it is free and tehn practice! YOu will find out that it is not as bad as you think as soon as you start working!

I started working right when I turned 16 and yes it was scary, and yes I needed to memorise, but apart from all that it’s a really great opportunity to learn social skills, quick thinking and improvising, and new tricks. the rude customers won’t phase u once u get used to working.
Yesterday was my first shift ever by myself as a waitress here in Las Vegas. I hope my nerves go away each shift.. lol I never served before!! I definitely give credit to everyone in this industry. You make it look so easy! I'll get the hang of this.

I remember my first day at work of being a waiter, i was nervous at first but it went well day by day, just listen to your seniors and your manager they will help you.
So it works my friend! The only thing is that it is best to be prepared and don't get all those people mad on your first day! Then you won't get guidance, you will get yelling :)

Hey A, I was once almost thrown out of the ship because the boss thought I am terrible! It was my first job too and I couldn't do anything! My advice is to watch the videos one by one and practice while watching! Learn to carry plates, trays and all other important for the waiter things and then go get another job! YOu will do much better the next time!

The Waiter's Academy First day with the trainer was stressful. She had to take on 10 tables by herself and was moving lightening fast with the computer system and just basically memorizing most of the order inputs in her head after she wrote them down just once at the table.
I’m sort of afraid that is what I have to amount to after my 5 day training period is up. I’m legitimately petrified.
WELL, IT IS JUST THE FIRST DAY SO IT IS LITTLE SCARY BUT YOU HAVE 4 MORE LEFT AND YOU WILL START FEELING THE JOB BETTER! THAN OFF COURSE YOUR MANAGERS WILL HAVE TO MAKE A DECISION IF THEY WANT TO PUT YOU OUT THERE TO THE WOLVES TO EAT YOU ALIVE OR THEY WILL GIVE A CHANCE TO GET YOUR SHIT TOGETHER FIRST! IF YOU STILL HAVE DOUBT YOU CAN HANDLE A FULL STATION TELL THEM TO GIVE YOU COUPLE OF DAYS ON A HALF STATION! THAT WAS A VERY GOOD PRACTICE IN GRAND LUX CAFE. THE NEW WAITERS WERE WORKING TWO WEEKS ON A HALF STATION. WHATEVER IT IS JUST KEEP TELLING YOURSELF THAT OTHERS HAVE BEEN IN YOUR POSITION AND THEY HAVE MADE SO YOU CAN MAKE IT TOO! AND DON'T EXPECT TO MAKE IT WITHOUT MISTAKES! THERE WILL BE A LOT OF MISTAKES AT THE BEGINNING DON'T LET IT GET TO YOU!
JUST WORK AS HARD AS YOU CAN AND LEARN AS FAST AS YOU CAN! HOPEFULLY THE MONEY IS WORTH IT :)

We all are on the first job, Jas! Try to calm yourself because that is what will make the difference! Those people expect to see someone nervous and scared and if you show up with a big smile and confidence you will blow their mind! Even if you are scared and nervous, keep your smile on your face all the time and concentrate on the task in front of you! You will do great! Good luck and come back to tell us how it was!

Amanda, good luck with the new job. Don't forget that we have all started the same way. You will drop plates and spill drinks on guests, it is inevetable, just apollogize and move on. Hey Peaches, carrying large tray, full with plates is a ...scary thing for beginners but I doubt they will give you that from the first day! Maybe you can tell them you can try at first a tray with two plates only and no sauce or soup on the plates :) Anyway, keep your head up and you will be okay! Don't forget that we all have been in this position and we all have had our fears! Just to make you a bit a t ease I am going to tell you that as a new waiter I was working in Cyprus and at the restaurant was a Sheikh from Kuwait...TOP VIP and I dropped on top of his head a huge tray full with scrambled eggs and peppers! Well...I lived through this shit too :)

Ask for help from other staff- but work out whos genrally nice. Give yourself a few days to get used to everything as it takes a while haha let mw know anything else, aslo you can use the ' i'm new here' excuse for the first couple weeks x

Once it happened to me. a guest order for chicken tikka masala but what I punched in is chicken tikka. It's happened in the very beginning. Since then, I realized that a waiter has to be a best listener.
Interesting Herman, I had the same problem with Chicken Marsala and mixed it with Chicken Piccata ...let's say the guests wasn't happy at all! That was my first week as a waiter in the States :)

Hi Kudoku, how is everything going right now? Take your time! The menu changes all the time every restaurant but you still have to learn it. This is basics if you want to feel comfortable and limit the mistakes you will make on the floor! From there, learn wine and drinks, and of course the steps of service! As an aspiring student of food and beverage service management, it's an opportunity that I had found and watched your videos.
It is my desire to work in food service related industry such as in hotels, restaurant, resort or in a cruise line. I wish I can haul the time and can work as a waiter right away. That's how excited I am to have that work, unknowing the difficulties of the field I am wanting, specially as a beginner. Well, speaking of difficulties, I am afraid that as a waiter I can't do my duties properly and effectively. I am scared of the idea that I can't get the customers order properly, I'm afraid that on my first day of work, I am shaking and can't carry tray appropriately, or I can spill water or wine on the customers table; that's really shameful. But then, I believe that with knowledge , passion, including observation and eagerness to learn, everything will be all right.

2EZ, this is exactly why I started this channel! I had this young people coming to work and telling me thay are scared before the shift and they hated the job because of the stress!
Stay focused and keep working hard! Learn! This is the most important thing! They need to see that you are learning fast and you are getting better and better with every other day! Communicate that to your boss! Tell him that you understand why he is mad at you and that you will do everything to get better in very short time and be a really good waiter for him!
Good luck and remember that being scared doesn't help you at all! You can do this as any of us! You just need the time and the effort to learn everything correct!

Only trained for 3 days and they expected me to know everything inside the restaurant such as the menu, where everything is, side work, the computer system, drink, etc. I just feel overwhelmed because they think I'm not good enough since I cant memorize everything and how they run the restaurant in 3 days.
H8 Sarah, this is common practice in our business. That's why I created the tutorial, How to be the best waitress from day one. Anyway, don't put yourself down. Keep learning and try your best. There are people who simply love to put new waiters down, dont pay attention to them. There are good people around you. Identify them and stick with them and learn as fast as you can. It takes time but you will turn the tide..

What do you do if someone pronounces a french wine and you don't know how to spell it? Some french wines are about 6 words long, how would you know how to abbreviate it?
Good question! It is very hard to learn the names on the wine from foreign country but the French are the worst :)
You ask the guest to show you which wine he means exactly and you apologize for asking but explain that you don't want to make a mistake and this is the best way to avoid one! Good question, Aimee!

Also, at the restaurant I work at, the chef's will put meals on the counter for us to take out, there are bills on the side that should correspond with the food and the table number. However, I'm really unfamiliar with the menu and what the food on the menu looks like. So, I'll read multiple bills and I have no idea how to tell what food on the counter corresponds with what bill. Idk how I can learn this and the staff seem frustrated with me because I just stare at the food blankly trying to figure out what food = what french name, but I have no idea how I could know? The Waiter's Academy it was great! I just arrived 2 hours ago from the job. The hardest part was not knowing the menu, so sometimes I couldn't just take the order, because the guest asked everything!!! But the other waiter were so cool and helped me when I asked them. There is no way you won't be nervous! It is normal thing, so don't worry about it.
The way to overcome fear is to learn as much as possible about the job so you have at least a little confidence that you can handle this stuff! Learn the menu, the PC, the wine list, the drink list!
Listen, you will make mistakes and you will feel bad and maybe even terribly at some point, but keep telling yourself that this is the beginning and it is part of the learning process! It will get only better from here with every new day experience you gain, and every new knowledge you learn! Best of luck! You will do great!

Kaviya, first you have to accept that is normal to be nervous. Second, we all mess up at the beginning. Third, all this goes awsy with time and experience. That how life works. Read a book about some of those public speakers and you will find out that when they first started speaking in front of public they were trowing up from nervousness. You can do this as million othees before you. Set a daily goal for yourself and achieve it, then set a new one. Small goals like, "I'm going to sell a bottle of wine to a table today. I'm going to carry a tray with my fingers today. I'm going to work without mistake today or there will be no cake for me tonight....."
