was studying stellar interior conditions for nuclear fusion today for my exam and came across quantum tunnelling of a particle through the coulomb potential barrier to initiate fusion and the book itself used words like, "might/maybe". Its a fine line between Physics and Philosophy.
It only gets more confusing the deeper into physics you go. LOL like at the beginning, things are kind of okay but then as you go on the terminology just gets more and more inconsistent.

Had open notes, open book tests in Fluid Dynamics. 2 of the 3 tests, got a C- and an F. Studied my ass off for those. Test 3, no studying, accepted my failure. Ended up getting a B+ The key to success was being a shitty student all along.

Is it really obvious Jackson? There's an old joke about Lifshitz losing twelve pages of notes for a book and Landau saying "IS OK... WE JUST SAY IS OBVIOUS!" If it is any consolation, many of these things become second nature through long use. It's still no excuse for some of Jackson's "derivations" Honestly, when I took Jackson, for me at least, the best resource was Feynman's second red book. At least in my experience, every time Jackson pissed me off, Feynman came to the rescue. Good luck on the exam!

It's maddening for derivations that use the words "obviously" and "clearly" far too often, and it is very, very Russian, but it is often the place to find that obscure, "just what you needed" insight or trick. Sadly, the books are out of print, but there are enough around that they aren't so hard to find.

When tests are open note, it gives me a false sense of security. It lets me justify procrastinating by thinking, "well, it's open note, I don't need to study that much." Sure, I have all the formulas and stuff out in front of me, but do I really know how to use them?

This is so true it's painful. In two weeks we'll have an exam and I don't know if it's on the last chapter we've kind of covered or the whole course (because we're almost finished with it)
So far the last one has been a mood for every midterm I have taken. I decide to stop studying and stare at a concept I don't want to work on and hope it doesn't show up on the exam. Within the next hour, I get my exam and the concept I didn't want to work on is worth 50% of the exam.
