They should've set up their dump tank operations where that gravel was so tankers had room to turn around. Lay 5" and pump to the attack engine. Would've been much easier and safer.
You get what you pay for in rural fire service and that isn't much. The title volunteers mean that they volunteer to standby and watch your property go up in flames for you.
I've been volunteering for 47 years, and I never got a dime, but I am just as dedicated, and do the SAME job the paid departments do. These guys did the best they could with the conditions presented. The winds were steady at 15 - 20 miles an hour most of the day with gusts. On arrival the house was already collapsing. Living in a rural area comes with the realization that emergency services may not be able to arrive as quickly or have the ability to get a water source immediately available to put out a fire quickly. It's one of the reasons I don't live in the country. Even if there was a paid department responding to this I believe the outcome would have been the same. To say we do it just so we can stand by and WATCH your property go up in flames for you is cruel. Come and volunteer with us ... Do the training, and then do the job. We are ALWAYS looking for people to help. Just don't criticize without knowing all the facts. And to be cruel is unacceptable.
Brother (and I mean that) . . . ignore it! Thirty years on a capital city department and I live out in the sticks. Never have I NOT truly appreciated our group out here . . . @@FDNY8231
