@@brittanybarthel1410 Same could be said with the entirety of the voice acting industry siding with Monica Rial and Jamie Marchi during the KickVic incident of 2019 or, to some extent, some UA-cam commentators and commenters siding with the MandoPony accusers during his drama (which, yeah, we had nothing to go off of that would support his side of the argument until the investigation last year, but my point still stands). It's best to remain neutral and not pick sides during dramas like what I just mentioned or the Amber Heard controversy, and let the proper authorities do their job and comb through evidence and form a consensus so we don't have to.

it never crossed my mind how can anyone find Will and Elizabeth not being in the film bad, considering both their character arcs were properly concluded in At World's End. If anything, including Will and Elizabeth would feel unnecesary and forced fan service. Introducing Angelica, played wonderfully by Spanish actress Penelope Cruz, was a good thing, I think her relationship with Jack Sparrow is pretty interesting.
Also, Óscar Janeada looks absolutely badass in his role as the Spanish captain, he gives vibes that he was born to play it.

I dont think it wouldve been forced, Elizabeth is still the pirate king and with that alot of danger can come by, what disappoints me in this film is that in the trilogy before the world building was amazing you really felt the world was lived in but in this one and the one after you feel like that has been drasticaly toned down and they barely connect to what came before, jack didnt seem to have a goal in this movies and literally got kidnapped and forced to be in the narrative, blackbeards motivations are bizarre he will be killed by a one legged man so he needs to fountain to avoid that ? Im assuming if youre younger youre not gonna be immune to being stabbed by a one legged man or by any man with a sword for that matter.
And it just feels like blackbeard came out of nowhere, like where was he in the 3rd movie since he is this big pirate that all pirates fear ? If he was this big player i would assume he wouldve played a role in the big battle that decided the fate of all pirates in the 3rd movie.
They couldve made a cool connection to davey jones to explain that absence,
What if blackbeard was a big pirate years ago that commanded the seas with everyone fearing him for years and his big army of pirates owing all of that to a deal he made with davey jones just like jack did for his black pearl, but unlike jack when it was time to pay up blackbeard runs away to land giving up his pirating ways forever afraid of davey jones and never going back to the sea so he wont face him, showing the parallels between him and jack where one faced there fear and defeated the devil while the other ran away like a coward and like what jack wouldve become if he did succumb to his own fears like he almost did.
Fast forward a few decades later a year after davey jones is dead and theres a vacuum in power that needs to be filled, with blackbeards only reason thats keeping him away from the sea having died he can finaly come back and rebuild his army that he once had to take over the seas again, but after decades of waiting the man has become to old and needs to recover the years that he has lost and thats why he goes for the fountain of youth. You can split this story into 2 movies even with the first ending with blackbeard recovering his youth and the second one having him want to be the pirate king, since before when there was no king he needed the court to vote him in which wouldve never happened but now that there is a king they can add a rule in the narrative that a new king can be crowned after killing the old one paving the way for elizabeth to reenter the narrative and will to come back to protect his wife in the 5th movie and the bretheren court returning with the climax of the 5th movie being between blackbeards rebuilt army vs the bretheren court and all their army under king elizabeth all while jack is jumping around from side to side manipulating the whole situation so he can get back his black pearl.

@@LordVader1094 not really, will is cursed unable to see his love or child for every 10 years, and Elizabeth is still technicaly the pirate king there are still these 2 loose ends that can be capitalized on. Not to mention Will is immortal and he can probably see his wife and child around like 10 more times before they die and he lives on for eternity, i highly doubt thats a perfect end.
It was a great ending for at worlds end but for them there is still much to be expanded on

Yeah, it felt like the series had to move on from them. The series had plenty of them in 2 and 3. Jack, Gibbs, and Barbosa all felt like characters that would be pirating until the very end, but Will and Elizabeth's arcs felt finished. This movie isn't amazing, but watching it after THREE it felt so much better. I will maintain that three was the worst one. A slog that took itself too seriously, felt too dour and miserable, and just went on and on, even if it had some genuinely great moments. It's hard to believe that it was shot at the same time as 2, it feels like it was written and directed by a completely different team.
4 felt like the franchise was going to move down an episodic path, which was very welcome. Keep the movies self-contained, keep them cheeky and fun even if scary at parts.

Agreed 100%. This movie is very underrated! The action scenes are spectacular and captain Jack Sparrow and Barbosa antics carry this movie! The ending scene is also very good with Jack Sparrow walking through the sunset with all of Blackbeard’s bottles ships, unfortunately Dead man tells no tales retcons the ending by making Jack Sparrow a dumbass by not freeing the bottles ships because he doesn’t ask help to any sorcerer or Barbosa himself to free the ships.

So, as a fun fact, this movie was loosely based on a book simply titled On Stranger Tides by Tim Powers. The two aren't exactly the same (among a number of other differences, the book's protagonist is a very different character than Jack Sparrow, though both do have the same first name), but the book does have Blackbeard as a villain using voodoo.

Obviously the first 3 are the best. However, I agree that 4th is a great movie. Not a stellar sequel, but a good side story. Jack is still recognizable, the writing is mostly good, the main villian is fun, the romances have delightful chemistry and I love the idea of exploring Jack's past more. I wish they left the scene about how he became a pirate in. It strengthens his connection to Will and better explains his grey morality. His relationship with Angelica could do something similar. He was scared of who he was becoming again. She brought out the best in him. So he left because he didn't want to change, but didn't want to hurt someone he genuinely loved. Maybe seeing the preacher and the mermaid trying to overcome the odds could remind him of Will and Elizabeth, except they still have a chance at a happier ending. Jack is best as a side character, but a good character-driven movie about reconciling who he is vs who wants to be and how his trauma has shaped him could be great. He is ultimately a good man trying his best to be another version of Blackbeard. Yet when it really matters he chooses self-sacrifice and compassion. This movie could have done what the others didn't have the chance to because he wasn't the focus of the story.
I don't mind the lack of Will and Elizabeth's characters. Their arcs were satisfying concluded. And who thought Jack was going to stop being Jack just because their stories stopped overlapping? I will entertain the complaint that they could have made better reference to how the relationships Jack had with them impacted him.

      @intergalactic92 8 місяців тому +1

The second and third films are direct sequels to the first. A direct continuation of the story (sort of) with all the same characters on a new adventure. Whereas On Stranger Tides is an indirect sequel. A new tale in the same universe with mostly new character.
Both are valid ways to do sequels. Difference is that Dead Man's Chest and At World's End are enhanced by their connection, and On Stranger Tides can stand on its own much more easily.

  • @kevinr.9733
    @kevinr.9733 Рік тому +70

In my opinion, Jack Sparrow is at his best when he's not the main protagonist. Protagonists tend to get dragged into the conflicts, and Jack is better when he's one of the ones doing the dragging. He does get several chances to demonstrate the wit, cleverness, and adaptability that we know and love him for (which is better than Dead Men Tell No Tales gives him; the best he gets there is the flashback to when Salazar got trapped), but outside of those moments it feels like he's just along for the ride.
The lack of Will and Elizabeth would probably be less contentious if their nominal replacements (Philip and Sirena) were as well developed as they were even in their first movie. The plot should have been at least as much about them as it was about Jack and Angelica.
While I still consider this the weakest in the franchise for those reasons (I quite enjoyed Dead Men Tell No Tales despite its butchering of Jack), I would agree that it's a better film than people give it credit for when not viewed through the lens of "followup to a beloved film trilogy".

    • @intergalactic92
      @intergalactic92 8 місяців тому +1

Interestingly the ending of the original trilogy (At World's End) is pretty contentious in the grand scheme of things, so the clean break from those films, demonstrating it’s a bigger world than just the stories of 2 characters, can be considered a refreshing change of pace to some. I know plenty who like this more than either Dead Man's Chest or At World's End for this reason.

Absolutly loved Jack and his interactions with the other characters, especially in an ending of the movie when he talks with Gibbs about life. One of my favorite scenes from the entire franchise.
Loved how there are multiple factions/characters with their own goals. Spanish were badass and I wish they were brought back in POTC5 somehow, since the main villain is spanish (if i'm not mistaken).

This movie is my second favorite film in the franchise after the first one. It’s not too dark like At World’s End and never gets too much like a parody like Dead Men Tell No Tales. I like that they got rid of Will and Elizabeth. Focusing solely on Jack was the way to go and he never has to be a supporting character to their story (which means no love triangle again). I also love Ian McShane as Blackbeard. He was a lot of fun to watch and I disagree that he was boring. The only truly bad thing I can say about this movie is the subplot with the missionary and the mermaid. There’s no reason for it and they blatantly feel like an attempt for the movie to replace Will and Elizabeth. Every time I watch this movie on rewatch, I skip those scenes. Otherwise I unapologetically love this movie.

I would have much preferred it if they made this the second movie instead and have the whole franchise be about following Jack Sparrow on his many different adventures that don't have much to do with each other besides having Jack in them, rather than have one three movie long story following the characters who's stories should have been resolved in the first movie and reduce Jack as a side character in his own franchise until he fourth movie. I actually think that the whole following independent adventures following Jack was what the creators originally intended for the franchise but then the Disney executives stepped in and said "Nooo! We have to get 'legolas' back in there he's too popular to leave out!"

I think the real reason that people hate this movie is because Jack doesn't have any motivation for getting the fountain. While the trilogy showed how he had a secret motivation within the plot, he doesn't have that in this movie. He's just dragged around. In fact everyone has a motivation but him, even the Spanish who showed up at the last second had reason to get to the fountain. I personally don't mind this because even though he doesn't have one, he is still represented way better than Pirates 5. Thank you for defending my favorite movie in the franchise.

That conversation when tied to the palm tree is legendary. The 5th film hasn't got any of that; Barbossa has become a stupid dad figure and is suddenly parenting, while Jack is a ghost of his former self. While this is also caused by the actors, I think the fact that the original writers who made a lore which made sense and build this world were not involved in the fifth film, is the reason that this film was horrible as it was. The 4th, though less stronger than the trilogy, is still a very good film which I enjoy watching and which has some great moments. It would've been amazing if this was continued as these stand-alone films about Jack and his adventures, rather than bringing back a Will+Elizabeth couple.

*/!\ Big rant on Captain Salazar from Dead Men Tell No Tales /!\*
The thing that disappointed me the most about the 5th installment is how *underused and awful* Captain Salazar was. Imagine Davy Jones bringing up Sparrow's name like a trained parrot every 5 minutes and that was its only character trait. That'd be Salazar.
SO MUCH could have been done with that character: the built up resentment towards Pirate Kind after 20 years of imprisonment in the Devil's Triangle. Its invincibility and the Silent Mary's speed and intimidation factor could have risen the threat level to that of the Kraken but for every pirate in the Caribbean. The interaction it could have had with the British and Spanish Navy and governments, hell make it question if the world is better off with that ghost ship roaming the sea if it protected merchant fleet just for the anticipation of giving pirates their comeuppance. You can still keep the absolute rage Salazar has over what Jack did to him and his crew but you get to have more character development from him.
You know how Salazar's crew can walk on the water ? Here is a terrifying and gruesome way to kill extras in this movie: Have Salazar unleash their zombie sharks and assault a pirate ship. By the sheer sight of the Silent Mary opening its jaws before demolishing the ship, have the crew jump overboard and swim for their lives. As they go underwater, the Spanish soldiers jump off boat too, seeking the evading men still underwater, holding their breath. As the pirates try to gain some distance from the soldiers, have a few of them get charged and eaten alive by the sharks, have a bloody limb float in front of one of the pirates, making him panic and go to the surface for air. *Sword stab in the head* immediately as they go to the surface.
    *U N D E R U S E D ! !*

Even though I didn't like this movie after I watched it in the "Hollywood theater" in Garland Texas which was a "dollar movie theater" wen it was open (where new movies eventually go there after they've been in the AMC theaters or where the new movies first go,after they've been in those movie theaters, they went to the "dollar movie theater" before they came out on DVD,and blu-ray,and near the end of it's or the "dollar theaters" lifetime,4K DVD) now it's shut down since after covid sadly, and I was like 11 years old wen it came out,and I haven't seen any other Pirates of the Caribbean movies before then so maybe that's why I didn't like it,and the reason I didn't like it is cause I thought it was boring but,I haven't seen it since then (2011),and I'm 22 now so I should definitely rewatch it to see if my opinion will change but,Idk or I don't know..... but,we'll see..... I'll probably update this comment if I watch it again soon..... to answer to see if my opinion changed or not or my perspective on the movie..... (My favorite Pirates of the Caribbean movie was the last one with Jack Sparrow also btw, watched that wen it first came out also, watched it with my Dad as well so it definitely made it a better experience but, keep in mind I haven't watched the first, second or the third movies but,I've played the Lego game so I have a good idea somewat of wat it or they would be like throughout the cutscenes, and levels of the Lego game, not saying I won't ever watch those movies though cause of wat the Lego game made me see wat they're kinda' like in terms of story, and such throughout cutscenes, and levels, cause I will eventually but,I definitely want to rewatch this movie in this video (On Stranger Tides) first before doing so,so I will come back to this comment, and say my updated current opinion on Stranger Tides, and also the other Pirates of the Carribean movies wen I watch them for the first time, and I guess I'll rewatch my favorite 5th one also since I haven't seen that in awhile, and compare that movie to the other one's wen I watch them for the first time...... 😎😅)

Blackbeard is just a bad man, exactly as he says. He just wants power and to be immortal. He didn’t even give it a thought when he drank from the chalice he thought was going to make him immortal and told his own daughter to sacrifice herself for him. He’s not a deep character, he’s a villain plain and simple. Captain Jack Sparrow is the main character so you can have movies without Will and Elizabeth, but you can’t have a movie without Jack. I love all the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, I’ve watch the first one many many times.

I think a lot of public opinion of this movie comes down to just what you said: it's not really a great sequel. The basic structure of PotC movies are that Jack Sparrow is a tool of comedy dragged along by a story that he'd really rather not be in, not the main driver. Therefore, even if jack sparrow is there, if people don't click with the story they dont like the movie. I think the general perception of this movie is one of ambivalence, but internet is as internet does and the most negative vocal opinions rise to the top when people don't have much to say about smth.

The thing I like least about Jack's character in this movie is he didn't really have that clear of a motivation, he was just kinda along for the ride. In the first 3 movies, he had a clearly defined motivation and a well thought out plan to go along with it, but not nearly as much in this movie. I still love this movie though.
Overall, I would rank the franchise:
    1. At World's End 10/10
    2. Dead Man's Chest 10/10
    3. The Curse of the Black Pearl 8/10
    4. On Stranger Tides 7/10

9:00 Don't forget that Barbossa's last words before returning to piracy are "the Revenge is mine." Double meaning there, he could be talking about Blackbeard's ship "the Queen Anne's Revenge" or the revenge he'd been seeking throughout the movie against Blackbeard himself.

I can point out something bad and the only reason why its worse than the original 3: Jach has no Motivation himself but just gets dragged trough the story by the other characters. He doesnt know about the Pearl and that it is in Blackbeards possesion so thats not his Motivation, he has given up searching the fountain of youth so that is not his Motivation. So what is it then?

But I think we can certainly agree that the 5th movie is definitely the worst.

I wholeheartedly agree! I thoroughly enjoyed On Stranger Tides and I think it’s silly for people to get too hung up on Will and Elizabeth. They are great characters in the content of the first three films. But the true reason there even was a second and third film was primarily because of Jack Sparrow in the first film. Will and Elizabeth do contribute greatly to that story but Jack is where the magic happens. Johnny Depp made the Curse of the Black Pearl infinitely better than it could’ve been. I think everything about it is richer and sweeter because of Jack Sparrow and his shenanigans. At the end of the day, it’s really all about Captain Jack Sparrow. Just like On Stranger Tides. Highly underrated and all about Jack

If Johnny Depp came back for a sixth film, it really needs to retcon a lot of stuff from 5 like his back story with Salazar, and it needs to bring back characters from 4, I would start the movie off with Jack back on his feet, getting ready for a new voyage, when he stumbles across Angelica, (who escaped her marooning) who is revealed to have been responsible for Jacks previous streak of bad luck, having used the voodoo doll to negatively effect Jacks luck, though she recently lost it, and had spent the last month drinking her sorrows away. Davy Jones would return as a villain, but now in the service of the greater threat, Poseidon, who is rather peeved that his trident got smashed, and all his curses undone. Jack and the gang would get back together for one last adventure to end the evil of the heathen gods once and for all. I’m

I totally agree with the gentleman that made this video! On Stranger Tides is criminally underrated. As I enjoyed this video, a pretty great Theory occurred to me: yes, Jack Sparrow is different than usual in the 5th movie. But the post credit scene of On Stranger Tides was Angelica and the Jack Sparrow voodoo doll. My theory is that whatever she did with that voodoo doll messed Jack up so much that he was never the same. It’s also a great parallel for what was happening in Johnny Depp’s real life at the time they were filming the 5th movie. There was a real life wicked wench making his life hell. Yes, that last movie was the weakest but it’s pretty good all things considered.

Lovely movie. I do have one huge complaint though, one you'll see echoed by other fans who are invested in the characters of this franchise: they killed off the entire black Pearl crew (minus Mr. Gibbs) off-screen (according to Barbossa).
The likes of Pintel, Ragetti and Cotton (Though... they brought back his parrot and Marty in Dead Men Tell no Tales?) just... dying off-screen to Blackbeard was a great big shame. The levity they brought to my childhood watching the first three movies is difficult to reconcile, as a fan of the franchise, when watching the fourth entry. Even when the creators of Dead Men Tell no Tales had the chance to bring them back by conjuring up ANY reason at all, they just didn't.
But as you say, there's nothing really wrong about the movie besides this cheap attempt at raising the already high stakes. The Pearl being miniaturized and Barbossa losing his leg was enough to paint a grim image.

Finally! Someone else who thinks this is a great movie. What most people don't know about it is that it was originally a novel called "On Stranger Tides" written by an American novelist named Tim Powell. Jack, Barbosa and Gibbs were added to the story. But the rest was a rough adaptation of Powells novel. Blackbeard, voodoo zombies, Ponce de Leon, the fountain of youth, they're all in the original story. If you ever find a copy of the book, give it a read.

This is a more disconnected side adventure and it’s still very solid movie all around imo. The set-pieces are all incredibly memorable, the music ESPECIALLY Blackbeard’s normal theme and death scene theme are fantastic, there’s interesting twists and turns, with the Spanish destroying the fountain of youth due to it being “pagan water” being a very memorable little twist on their motivations.

Finally, I am vindicated!!! I agree with almost all of your points, except that I still think Blackbeard is a weak villain whose name we only remember because it's supposed to be _the_ Blackbeard. If it was just Captain Smith, Angelica's pirate father whom she loves and would do anything for, we wouldn't care. My main problem with him is that Ian McShane delivers his lines like he's genuinely _bored_. He sounded like he was just there for the paycheck and to be in a blockbuster franchise. Also, it was actually Angelica who came up with the plan to trick Serena into crying.
    Blackbeard: "You are confident."
Angelica: "Yes. I am a woman. So is she."
For me, because At World's End left me, emotionally uninvolved (I really don't have any impression about that movie, positive _or_ negative. There were things I liked and things I didn't like), that On Stranger Tides was a welcomed palate cleanser that made me remember why I fell in love with this franchise in the first place. It really is a *good side story*.

A thought i had that i would like to see you discuss in a dead men tell no tales video:
While i do get your point about Jack's characterization in dead men tell no tales, i feel like what you didn't consider was that he was like that on purpose in order to showcase that he had lost his luck. Jack's luck is gone, his ship and crew are gone, so he's become a mess, but then an opportunity, the trident of Poseidon is presented and he is given the chance to, in Henry's words, "be the one who rules the sea and become whta you once were, the great (cut off by Jack sleeping)", even without the trident he manages to get back to his feet and the movie ends with him on a high note, becoming the Jack we all know and love.
Although if you have an argument that proves me wrong please do bring it up.
And also an answer to the comments that Jack supposedly doesn't have any motivation of his own for the fountain: he does. At world's end already brought up that he wants to perhaps live forever, so ofcourse Jack wants to gain immortality, but he soon realizes that it's, in his own words, "better to not know which moment may be your last", perfectly wrapping up the AWE plotline of him wanting immortality, and also choosing his loved ones over immortality.

This is the case of people "feeling" that something is wrong, but not necessarily being able to put that feeling into words. The arguments they give shouldn't be taken at face value, rather, it should be indicative of a deeper fundamental issue.
It's like asking a person what makes CGI look fake, and they might struggle to point out what it is exactly, and if you pressure them, they will name a thing or 2, but those things shouldn't be taken as their actual complaints. An average person can't tell you what is wrong with the CGI exactly, but saying "their arguments don't make sense and therefore they are wrong - the CGI is realistic" is arguably a worse take - it's you refusing to acknowledge the problem that is clearly there.
There is definitely something wrong with Pirates 4, but it's difficult to pinpoint. You're right to say that a lot of the elements of the move are great and are similar to the trilogy. This makes me think that the real problem is the context:
Whenever you have the same constituent elements for 2 products, but one is praised while the other one is not, it points to the problem being the context. For instance, I might crack the funniest joke ever on the funeral, and the audience might even laugh, but they will keep telling me it wasn't funny, even though it clearly was - they laughed, because I told the joke in the context that didn't warrant the joking. People come to the funeral to mourn, not to have a good time. And so even if they hear the best joke of their lives, they will complain.
I believe Pirates of the Caribbean were very novel when they came out, and attracted audience who was tired of the conventional cinema tropes. But by the time the 4th movie came out, the things that used to be novel became the tropes themselves - the audience expects Jack to be weird, to have a great banter with Barbossa, to have a few awesome escape sequences, a few ridiculous sword fights, etc. And the movie delivers on all of that, yes, but at the cost of feeling formulaic, because all those things are no longer novel.
It's the same with the villain - what makes Blackbeard a bad villain is the context, a.k.a. the fact that he is in the same franchise as Davy Jones, and so people can't help but compare the 2. It might be unfair to expect the writers to top or match one the best villains of all times, but that's what people do. If you eat a decent meal after just eating the best meal of your life, well, the decent meal will look pale by comparison.

This movie feels out of place because it's isolated and plants the seeds for future plotpoints that never came back. Had it been the start of a second trilogy, it would be more fondly remembered.
EDIT: I've now seen the whole video and I agree with every single point except one.
I just can't see this movie, as good as it is, as the conclusion to the whole saga nor a spinoff. Too many loose ends for that.

Very nice vid. I still think the movie is mid. But you make a good case for it being underrated. There's definitely good stuff here. Barbossa and Jack had some good stuff here, like that scene where they exchange booze from Barbossa's leg. Blackbeard is a pretty good character, and his ship is pretty badass. But the other characters I really disagree. I don't really like Angelica all that much, she isn't bad, but she isn't really that great either. The Spanish are also kinda undercooked, they had an interesting concept but need more screentime. The preacher and mermaid girl are also pretty forgettable, the preacher dude less so, since him trying to save Blackbeard's soul is interesting. But then he got tangled in the mermaid romance which became much less interesting.

18:46 I disagree on your point that Angelica willingly gives up her life for Blackbeard. Blackbeard is the one who makes the choice, Angelica only goes along with it after he already takes a drink from the one he thinks has the tear. It’s something I did really like myself. It demonstrates once and for all how selfish he is, despite his claims of loving his daughter she is just a means to an end and Angelica, despite actually loving her father and believing in the potential good in him is shown how wrong she was.
The fountain was ultimately a test and the one truly irredeemable character fails and is punished for it.

Thank you! Someone actually enjoying this movie, lmao! It is definitely not my favorite, but I love it all the same. As for why people tend to dislike it, I think it all comes to the scale. On Stranger Tides is just a smaller scale story compared to the original trilogy. I mean final confrontation at the Fountain of Youth is hardly on par with the Battle of Calypso's Maelstrom and stand off against Beckett's armada, but that's fine. It is mostly a stand alone story. And a good one at that. Also, smaller or not, I love that fight at the Fountain so much. I dunno, I just love it.
P.S.: RIP to the goats Gillette and Groves, they were the OGs. :(
