Never will I ever forgive this movie for turning Buzz from a determined and intelligent leader to a comedy-riddled fool. They did the same to Ralph. Why do they think making an amazingly developed character a sudden dunce is funny?
And what I don't get is people NOT seeing it that way, especially in regards to him not realizing he was a toy right away. That in no way makes him an idiot.

Kids are smart, and emotionally intelligent, I feel like Bonnie would understand that Andy really cared about Woody, and she would too. I never understood the 180 of her portrayal to completely discard of him.
I remembered those defending this movie and the “reason” Bonnie stopped caring is cause they argued that “she’s just a kid, she’s gonna like a toy and not play with said toy if they get bored of them or die to their short attention, she probably said yes to Andy because she wanted woody then and later forget.” like the more I heard it the more of an excuse it was to make Bonnie not care for him.
But here's the thing; Bonnie DIDN'T discard Woody, she just didn't play with him as much as Andy did. There's a small segment in the "Throw Yourself Away" montage, that completely negates Woody's "Arc" of having to overcompensate not being played with, where we see Bonnie actively PLAYING with Woody and Forky. On top of that, Woody's "Arc" is just a rehash of his arc in Toy Story 1, where he had the same dilemma of not being "The Favourite Toy" anymore. Only in TS1, it made sense because he was with Andy for all of his childhood. He knew full well when donating himself and co. to Bonnie, that he would likely not be her #1 toy and he was FINE with that, because he had matured across TS1 and TS2 But all of a sudden, TS4 decides "Nah, he was gonna ditch everyone for Bo." Right, okay ima stop here. Otherwhise I'll go off all night.
I didn’t have an issue with Bonnie in this way. I agree with the sentiment that children do change their minds on *their* favourite toys. It isn’t really about whether Andy valued Woody; it was about her having different favourites because she’s a kid and this happens. Nothing in the movie said she hated Woody or wanted to get rid of him; she just wasn’t playing with him as much. My issue was Woody being dissatisfied at not being the favourite again. He already went through this arc. If it had been more about him re-evaluating where he derives happiness-making a child happy by being their toy-I don’t think Bonnie’s changing toy focus would be so divisive. It could also have been Woody realizing that being Bonnie’s toy didn’t fill the void of him no longer being with Andy. He made a move to keep everyone together and show the cycle of toys changing to different kids, but over time, he’s realized that he doesn’t receive the same joy because this isn’t Andy. Being played with less and less just makes him aware that he’s not happy overall. He then tries to fill that void with getting Forky back to Bonnie because he sees how Forky makes her happy. And this can lead him to considering Bo’s way of living where he can find purpose elsewhere.
Honestly as much as this could've felt to mature even an idea of Bonnie wants to take care of him since he was something special to Andy makes Bonnie not play with him all the time. To avoid him getting hurt. Its's an idea for a twist to at least make something make more sense. Still wouldn't help with Woody though.

After Woody spent YEARS not being played with as Andy grew older, a few days of no attention should feel like nothing when taking account to his perception of time.
@grygoo2680 Not to mention that Toy Story 2 Andy's mum says that Woody is "an old family toy and isn't for sale." Which means Woody knows exactly what it means to go into storage, as it implies he was passed onto Andy through either his dad, mum, or grandparents. Woody is the last character who should be having a mental breakdown over not being played with for three days, let alone being put into storage. Plus, as of the events of TS2, Woody knows he is a "one of a kind" or at least a very rare toy, he shouldn't be easily manipulated into giving up his voice box, well the motorised parts, to Gabby Gabby just so she can be "loved by a child."

Just as he did with Andy (albeit he gave Andy a tiny push) but to be disloyal to Bonnie in this instance is to be disloyal to Andy as well. And his friends!
Bo Peep basically replaced Jessie in this movie, except, unlike Bo, Jessie isn’t a heartless, terrible friend to Woody and the others. It also really grinds my gears that Jessie doesn’t tag along with Buzz when he goes out to rescue Woody and Forky, especially since the ending of Toy Story 3 hinted that the two of them were developing romantic feelings for one another. We got no expansion of their relationship in TS4; in fact, the movie hardly acknowledges that Buzz and Jessie had any kind of relationship to begin with. Anyway, great video. I always appreciate these detailed movie breakdowns. 👍
Jessie had a completion of her character arc in the toy story of terror; something I adore and bonus points for her and Buzz having some subtle but cute moments together.
Bopeep originally being a gentle and graceful character made a lot of sense considering she's made of porcelain. She HAD to be careful and slow-moving to not risk breaking, and that care and elegance became reflected in her personality. It's pretty genius character writing. New Bo is the complete opposite: Reckless, fast-paced, arrogant, and smart-mouthed. I see the writers were trying to go for a "this character is fierce and leaps at danger in-spite of how fragile she is" approach and that's not necessarily a bad thing. But it's not Bopeep anymore. Not the one Woody was in love with anyways.
Also with Bo and Jessie together you had the graceful feminine lady and the rough and tough tomboy. Now they shaft Jessie, the bloody tomboy, to make Bo a girlboss… what the hell Pixar!?
Changing Bo Peep’s dress could have been so cool. Imagine if she still had the porcelain one at the beginning, only for Woody to find out later that it shattered unintentionally or otherwise. Imagine if she purposefully shattered her own dress to become more mobile as a lost toy? There could still be sharp fragments underneath that she could be insecure about, or maybe she grew to resent her former life and wanted to take back control? There are so many possibilities but NOPE, let’s just retcon her former design I guess…
Yeah I think thats the part that annoys me the most. They CAN put in the effort and write her changes to work. I truly believe it could had worked, but it felt like they didn’t tried. Just retcon it and it should work out fine in their eyes I guess. I get writing and making movies in general is hard, it’s something I will never understand myself because I never done it, but it just feels lazy. :/
I would picture her finding a file to even out the sharp pieces to not get the kids with it, but her paint job wouldn't cover the line across her stomach so she would be self conscious of that.
Tbh I don't really know how well that would work considering the old dress was physically apart of her. If she shattered it then there would just be a big hollow hole where the part she broke off used to be.

This movie's super underhated if you ask me, when I watched this in theaters for the first time, calling it "insulting" is an insult in of itself, it just... "destroyed everything".
Toy Story 4 is like Kung Fu Panda 4. Unnecessary with main characters we wanted to see completely sidelined. One side duo being remotely funny carrying the movie. Also character assassination all around. Also Dog water villain.
Kung Fu Panda 4 actually had a build up to it, though, even if not executed properly. Po becoming the spiritual leader of the Valley of Peace really WAS set up by Oogway giving him the staff and pretty much outright saying Po was meant to be his successor at the end of Kung Fu Panda 3, just like Po's biological father returning was set up for Kung Fu Panda 3 at the end of Kung Fu Panda 2. And Po needing to train a successor or think about it isn't really a bad idea. Also, the idea of Po encountering this area of China where they hadn't even heard of him as the Dragon warrior and all was NEEDED. He was really starting to get highstrung with "look how cool I am. I'm the dragon warrior. Let me give you my autograph!" as can be seen in Kung Fu Panda 2, among other places. And Zhen being the unlikely successor also fits. I mean, Po doesn't scream "dragon warrior" at first glance and Zhen doesn't scream "next in line". So it fits. Now what was more a bad idea was that they had it so that he couldn't be the Dragon Warrior anymore. I didn't know that you couldn't be if you were the spiritual leader of the valley of peace. And while Chameleon did look cool and all with her sorcery, the worst thing she did was steal the staff thingy (which she had Zhen do) and knock a guy down the stairs. Tai Lung rampaged the valley of peace and took out all those guards when broke out of prison. Shen genocided a bunch of pandas. And Kai was a general and also turned a bunch of the good guys into jade zombies and destroyed the Jade Palace and nearly got Po. Toy Story 3 showed no inkling that a Toy Story 4 was coming or needed. Also, it's been stated for a while by the makers of Kung Fu Panda that they had ALWAYS, or for years and years, intended there to be six movies in total in the franchise. Tai Lung wasn't really character assassinated. (Also, Po saved him already, in a bizarre way. If you look closely in Kung Fu Panda 3, you can see that, among the masters in the spirit world that Kai took the chi from was TAi Lung's.) Shen was, and Kai shouldn't still be around. Kung Fu Panda 4 is definitely the weakest of the franchise, but it's not a pure cash grab that had no inkling of even happening from its predecessor, unlike Toy Story 4.
Pretty much. Both have potential, but it was clearly mismanaged and just became cashgrabs. I think at the very least Kung Fu Panda 4 treated its cast better than Toy Story 4, but only because the half-baked ones were the new ones, rather than going out of their way of changing the established ones.
Toy Story 4 did NOT need to exist. The ending to 3 was perfect but now it feels ruined. I dont know why they decided woody leaving the gang at the end was the best move here. What if andy came back to woody only to be told bonnie lost him

I don't understand the need to make a full sequel to movies that had perfect endings. Megamind, Despicable me 2, Toy story 3.... The solution to the sequel problem is short episodes or specials, kinda like what hercules and emperor's new groove made. Megamind Vs the Doom Syndicate was just a pilot episode for the awful Megamind series. It’s not a sequel. Also, Despicable Me 2 ending in a perfect way is surprising, as I felt like Despicable Me 3’s ending would’ve ended the main Despicable Me films.
I'm just tired of the "girl-bossification" of female characters. And ofc Gabby Gabby, had to be "redeemed, because we can't have a "negative" female role model for little girls. 😅
Seriously though and I really wish that corporations like this would realize that no one wants these girlboss characters and we would be much happier if they just left their pre-existing female characters alone instead of trying to do this feminism move that they clearly don't get.
I don't hate Gabby Gabby being redeemable because it feels like Woody being able to stop another Lotso type villain from coming into the world. Lotso went bad because he had no one to show him compassion when he was at his lowest point, and Woody had the opportunity to do that for Gabby. The issue is they didn't frame it like that, they just redeemed her without her ever taking accountability.
To quote Richard Nixon, when a woman kidnaps and guilt trips another person into giving up a piece of themselves to serve their own needs and never apologizes for it: “…that means that it is not illegal.”
The thing is I'm fine with Bo peep being fierce and stuff in the new movie, BUT ONLY AFTER THE TIME SKIP. Not at the very beginning when she was still a sheltered porcelain lamp accessory. I feel like it makes a little bit more sense after the time skip, when she's been out surviving on her own trying to get crushed, but the beginning scene is honestly BS.

That could be fun, though I don’t see it likely that Woody would try to change her. Maybe do comparisons, sure, but actively try to change? That doesn’t seem like something he’d do.
29:16 Interestingly enough, they've actually done this exact thing before. The original voice actor for Slinky, Jim Varney, died a few months after Toy Story 2 released. In Toy Story 3, Slinky's role was given to Varney's close friend Blake Clark, and he has been voicing him ever since. They very well could've looked for someone else to voice Mr. Potato Head but they didn't.
Fun fact: Toy Story 2 wasn’t Jim Varney’s final voice role before his sudden passing. Disney’s “Atlantis: The Lost Empire” (which was being worked on at the same time till it released in 2001) where he voiced the short old guy was actually his actual final voice role. Tho unless if we’re being consistent with his timeline, maybe he voiced the old guy in ATLE first (due to the the movie still being stuck in production hell) before voicing Slinky again for his final role in Toy Story 2 which released in 1999.
The girl bossification of Bo Peep is so pandering to me and probably the most forced feature in modern Disney movies. It's like the studio is trying to atone for their past by forcing existing characters into this bad ass, quirky girl stereotype. It's insulting. A female character can be "strong" without dropping sassy remarks and kicking ass. It's okay to be gentle and flirty. Plus, we already have a character like this. JESSIE! And she is infinitely better in terms of writing, because while she's tough and edgy, that isn't all she is. She's scrappy, but kind. Fearless, but vulnerable, etc, etc. Bo just feels like an insincere apology from Disney. There's no reason for this film to exist
Exactly. My problem with the new Bo isn't the fact that she's some survivalist agile girl boss, my problem with it is how *everything* about her in the movie is basically trying to gas light us into thinking "this is _always_ who Bo was, this is who Woody fell in love with, shut up!" or "See? Bo isn't just some meek defenseless woman, she's got CHARACTER! Love us!"
There's something I realized that not a lot of people talk about. If they wanted to go with this forced narrative of Woody feeling down because he's not played with enough, why didn't he go to Sunnyside Daycare? Not only did he admit that it's a nice place despite his concerns about Andy in the previous movie and not only are there plenty of children there, but he wouldn't even have to completely abandon his friends since Bonnie's mother works there. That means that Woody could still be visited by his friends if they could hitch a ride with Bonnie's mom and he could have some familiar faces to talk to.
First 3 tory story films: stick with your owner and friends as they matter most no matter what happens Toy story 4: if you get a love interest leave everyone behind

Toy Story 5: Technology is replacing toys, and there are a Gazillion Buzz Lightyear toys stuck in play mode who form an army. I'm really optimistic about what the message of #5 will be. Hopefully, it doesn't get the same over hate that this one's message did... I say over hate because I honestly didn't mind #4's ending all that much. In fact, I thought it was solid.

For the ending to even occur requires Woody to do something in complete contradiction to himself in the three previous movies, Bo Peep to be likable in this one (she isn’t), and that Bonnie wouldn’t be hurt by this (something not even entirely clear in the fourth film and definitely not true if the third film is taken into consideration). It’s fine if you enjoy it. I’m just not sure I can trust your evaluation of solid given the contradictions between this movie’s end and its predecessors.
Well woody is gonna be back and probably see each other again, so that’s already retconning the whole “I’m gonna go and this is goodbye guys” they had in TS4 ending.
Toy Story 5 really can't pull a Shrek 4 considering that unlike Shrek 3, TS4 ended with a major status quo change. Also in the D23 concept art for TS5 Forky is with the gang and Jessie is still wearing Woody's badge.
Shrek Forever After *didn’t* retcon the first 3 movies, they still happened, it was only a certain villain (who had already appeared in the previous movie as a very different-looking character btw) who was retconned into the series.
When I first watched the film, I enjoyed it. But I didn’t like the ending. As we were walking out of the theater I jokingly told my parents there should be a Toy Story 5. That aged well.
I liked only one thing out of this whole movie. The sequences with Forky and Woody in which Forky keeps rejoining the trash. It's cute, but the rest of this movie doesn't even feel like its in the same universe as the other 3.
Because the writers need to tear down Woody so Bo can become the new face of the franchise. Because Woody is a "man" and we all know that boys aren't allowed to have strong male role models to look up to. Unlike little girls, who get everything.

Honestly, I much prefer this tear down rather than the 6 hour one. Its less preachy, less usage of multiple clips (especially the avatar ones), and less nitpicky and just goes straight in without any unnessesary negativity. But the fact both of these videos point out the same exact problems about this movie just proves its pure flawed writing and assassination.
14:40 Ex-freaking-actly! I am so tired of the argument that claims that "Toy Story 4 is 'Woody's ending.'" Woody already got a happy ending in the previous film! He moved on from Andy successfully and gained new friends and a child who adored him. He could be loyal to a child and have his family with him. There was nothing to improve upon. Edit: 17:36 I love this concept so much. My TS4 replacement fan fiction focused heavily on this. Even when they're not being played with, they can still help kids. It was so easy to see, but Pixar still missed it.
I have found myself disliking this more and more upon rewatching the original trilogy. I just can’t get around why so many of our favorite characters are completely regressed/useless/out of character. Woody: Is completely going against what he stood so firmly against in TS3 as he tried to convince everyone that Andy cared about them, going as far as to leave them at Sunnyside for Andy, but when he finds out about Lotso, he doesn’t hesitate to rescue his friends, his family and bring them home. The ending is perfect too, because he realizes how he would be safe in Bonnie’s hands with his friends, but only with Andy’s blessing. TS4 completely regresses on this and it’s like if in TS2, Woody had decided to go to the museum, it’s completely backwards for his character development considering how poorly Bo treats him and talks to him. It’s as if the message is like “Yeah leave your family and best friends to go with your ex that treats you like garbage and you haven’t seen in 9 years.” Buzz: Buzz’s character in TS4 makes me want to break something. He’s completely stupid with the whole inner voice thing, to which he has always known what a conscience is, and is capable of making decisions on his own. He is one De Facto co leader/strongman the group. In TS1, Buzz is ignorant rather than stupid, as he clearly has common sense and survival skills. TS2 is peak Buzz IMO as he literally tracks down Woody using a feather and license plate, and he leads the rest of the toys. When he gets tied up in the box, he escapes and finds a way out and follows them. He also calls out Woody for what he was doing and literally brings their friendship full circle when he tells him that Woody taught him the importance of being there for your kid. Also in the beginning when Woody gets stolen, and in the Climax, Buzz does not think twice in rescuing Woody and Jessie, because he knows how important being there for your friends/kid is. In TS3 Buzz intelligence and innovation is also shown in the first act of the movie until he gets switched to demo mode. EVEN THEN, he’s shown to be intelligent knowing when to call for backup/use tools at his disposal. And after at the dump when he gets switched back, HES STILL HIS SAME OLD SELF, telling the toys to grab something magnetic to avoid the shredder. In the climax, he knows that this is the end. When Jessie asks him what they should do, he takes her hand, knowing that this is their end, but he will die with those he loves. (A side note but I’m pissed that there was basic no moments of Buzz x Jessie in TS4 after their feelings were strongly hinted at in TS3 and the shorts) Overall Buzz is not stupid nor timid, but TS4 assassinated him ruthlessly. Jessie: I also hate what they did to Jessie in TS4. In the beginning when they’re in Bonnie’s closet, they show her hyperventilating which really doesn’t make sense. Yes she had her trauma of claustrophobia and abandonment, but she’s been shown to be in way tighter/darker spaces without a problem, like the TS3 toy box. Also she has her friends there for her, so she would feel safe with them, as her trauma mainly is shown from her being alone and in the dark, which she been shown to overcome partially in TS of terror. Another thing, Jessie is shown as brave and adventurous and also a leader. In TS3, she leads the Sunnyside escape while Woody is taking care of the monkey and Buzz is against them. In TS4, when Buzz leaves the van, she and the other toys stay there, which is out of character for her. The Jessie we know would have gone with Buzz to help save woody for the adventure and because she cares. She also did nothing basically in TS4 aside popping the tyre, which again makes no sense given her character. She also deeply cares for her friends and owners. In TS3, she suggests Sunnyside because she wants the best for her friends at a new home. But upon finding out Andy still cares for them, she without hesitation tells them they need to go back. She’s also responsible, as she admits how she was reckless for leading them to Sunnyside. In the climax she doesn’t hesitate to jump in the dumpster to save woody from Lotso, and stands up to Lotso calling him out, as well being the first to try to help buzz from under the TV. Jessie in TS2-TS3 is the perfect example of how to write an awesome female character without making them into a gaslighting, toxic feminist(Bo peep). The rest of the toys are completely sidelined too but I think that’s obvious. I just hope Toy Story 5 can make a good comeback, and I have higher hopes as Andrew Stanton is directing it, but only time will tell.
For me it’s biggest issue was how it handled the core 3 woody buzz and Jesse let’s go from weakest to worst Jesse- made claustrophobic again after she got over it in Toy Story of terror Buzz- made to be so stupid he mistakes his conscious as his voice box Woody- essentially abandons his friends his family AND HIS KID to be with an abusive exe and to those who claim that’s not the case listen to this line that Bo had to describe woody”oh he’s just my accessory”
Abusive ex? Lol, that's quite the way to call it. I figured Bo Peep was just doing playful banter with Woody, considering she has a more hardened personality. She seemed genuinely happy to reunite with Woody, and she knows the area more than him, so she takes the lead for the most part.
Calling Bo Peep abusive is a wild claim. That line is so obviously banter, and at worst she's downplaying him because he's in a domain he has zero experience with. That said, I don't hate that Jesse was dealing with claustrophobia again. Yeah, she pushed through it before but also: You can still be uncomfortable and panicky about it. She seemed far more in control of it compared to before in this movie when I watched it so I think that's a plus for the movie actually. I'm not hit by my arachnophobia as hard but I still have that unease and a spider surprising me will put me on edge for a while with paranoia.

@@LadyLeomon When Buzz Lightyear has his "Andy" written on his foot, he tells the toys that he has been accepted into their culture, since he thinks he is in an alien planet so in he's mind he's just trying to respect their culture. The toys might have explained him that where they live, they freeze when humans are around, so he tries to do that as he is trying to respect their culture and the way they do things around there. That's one of the more logical explanations. The other main one is that it is just an instinct the toys have when humans are around, but if that were true, then why would Woody call unfreezing when a human is present "breaking the rules" and be able to do so? It's also evident that toys are aware when they are frozen so if Buzz Lightyear just had an "instinct", then logically he should be able to freak out and move like Woody was able to do, revealing him being alive. So that theory probably isn't it. I hope I helped you.
as a woman I hate the fact every single female character now gets reworked into a “girlboss” archetype. its weird to teach little girls that the only valuable and cool way to be a woman is being a sarcastic kickass. just once I’d like to see a female character reworked keeping her old traits and just expanding on them in interesting ways
That actually ties to the way Hollywood in general treats female characters almost always , either girl boss who does no wrong and completely stoic , or girliest girl who is the love interest I genuinly love it when a girly character can be badass aswell as deep , or a stoic girl boss who can see her issues or has to overcome problems and herself
What sucks is that even though this film has some haters, it has good reviews and people seem to generally consider it a good film. I DESPISE this movie. It assassinates the characters, has so many inconsistencies, ruins the most perfect and heartfelt trilogy, and so much more. It almost would have been fine that this movie was so terrible if it was universally hated as well but I see it get defended ALL THE TIME. It’s painful to see as someone who grew up with the franchise and cried at the ACTUAL finale (which was literally intended to be the absolute end of their story)
The story by itself, honestly isn't the worst thing ever. The problem is that at this point in the Toy Story canon, it should not have been a Toy Story movie. It ret-cons so much that it feels like a huge backpedal for the series.
It would have kind of been ripping off the second movie, but I feel like it might have been a little interesting if the Bo Peep for most of the movie was a different Bo Peep? Like Woody didn't realize that Bo wasn't literally one of a kind and had to deal with accepting that this wasn't the Bo he knew despite looking just like her?

Well there’s 2 reasons they used archive recordings of the late Don Rickles for Toy Story 4. 1. Don’s family personally requested the studio to use his voice in the film, so Pixar was honoring his family’s wishes. 2. You know how hard it is to find a convincing Don Rickles impersonator? It doesn’t help that the character’s become associated with Don Rickles that it’s hard thinking of anyone else in the role. Sure, Slinky was recast, but do people really associate Jim Varney in the role as they do with Rickles and Mr. Potato Head? I think Jim would be more associated with Ernest P. Worrell than with Slinky Dog.

Mr. Potato Head isn’t just a Toy Story character, he’s an iconic toy that’s been synonymous with toy brands such as Barbie & Hot Wheels (both Barbie and the Hot Wheels toys made it to the Toy Story films), and 3. And 2. I think Maurice LaMarche could’ve done a good Don Rickles impression, so they could’ve hired him to voice Mr. Potato Head in Toy Story 4. Or, they could’ve removed Potato Head entirely, since they removed Chuckles the Clown because Bud Lucky passed away, even though Pixar got Jonathon Banks to play Rick Dicker (another character Bud played).

One and the biggest problem is the end. My friends at first did not understand why till I told it to them this way. If it had been the other way around. Woodie being a girl and Bo being a boy….. and female woodie is giving up her friends and family to run off with boy Bo people would loose their minds and be furious. They finally understood. (Also I hate how it destroyed the core of the movies which is always about friendship)

I still cannot believe I didn't *hate* this movie when I first watched it. This is honestly my least favorite Pixar movie of all time (I know there are worse movies but they don't count in my mind).
The fact that there's still some good new animated movies makes it even worse with how horribly this film failed. I know because I’ve seen movies like Inside Out 2 and Wild Robot so there's no reason for Toy Story 4 to be as awful as it was. The only way I can still enjoy the original Toy Story trilogy is by completely ignoring this movie exists same thing with SpongeBob I can only enjoy the classic episodes by simply pretending the new episodes don’t exist.
Don't feel bad when I first watched it and when I first watched Ralph breaks the internet I didn't think it was that bad either until I've gotten older.
And I'm noticing the same thing with Moana 2 where watching it for the first time I felt like it wasn't bad but now maybe a month later I still wouldn't consider it bad but I definitely wouldn't consider it a good sequel AND NOT NEARLY AS BAD AS TOY STORY 4.

I have watched toy story 3 as a child like a lot of time. It was my most rewatched cartoon for me. When I watched the 4th movie I sat for about five minutes in complete silence like my fucking childhood was shitted on. I was so sad that the ending I adored was redconed for "Now we are cooler independant toys!" fuck that...
I will quote Adam Does Movies with Bo Peep's character issue. Ahem ... "We have another STROOOOOOONG FEEEEEEEEEMALE LEEEEEAD. And for the Toy Story franchise ... it's about time." Basically all they did was tick the box for that character trait when making this movie which completely destroys her character because they go about it in the worst way possible. If the person I was in love with treated me the way Bo treats Woody I would have left and never come back.
also Cars 2 felt like a lot of fun compared to Toy Story 4, genuinely enjoyed it when I watched it for the first time, whereas I slept throughout a good chunk of Toy Story 4.
Good video mate! I found this to be a more straight forward and less tedious critique at TS4 than THAT 6 hour video. I appreciate you focusing heavily on the character assasinations and how it contradicts the OG trilogy. With this being the same length as the film instead of being four times the length. Personally, I consider the Pixar Unholy Trinity to be TS4, Lightyear and Incredibles 2. I don't hate Cars 2, Brave, The Good Dinosaur and Turning Red as much as everyone else does, and Cars 2 actually respects the consistency of the characters unlike TS4, plus its events were retconned in Cars 3. I know Cars 2 is heavily flawed but I have somewhat of a soft spot for it since 7 year old me was obsessed with that film.

Things i dont like about Toy story 4: -Buzz becomes stupid because the movie cant find an excuse to make him dumb (like atleast he had reason to be dumb. In 1, he was a new toy, in 2, he was replaced by an anti-gravity belt buzz, and in 3. was switched to demo mode by Lotso) -Woody dumps all of his character development in the first 3 films because Bo peep -people are extremely stupid (like when the toys were sabotaging the van, and how people believed that the skunk car was real, which you can argue that in the 1st movie, Hannah was also gullible when Woody was pretending to be her Mom, but Hannah's a child. In this movie, ITS LITERAL ADULTS) -Bonnie prefers to play with literal rubbish rather than her other toys -Andy will most likely get mad at Bonnie for losing Woody (Even though its entirely Woody's fault because like i said, Bo peep) -Speaking of Bo peep, Why did they make her a strong independent woman?? To your first point it could have been so much better if Buzz had some sort of issue with his self confidence, maybe he made a bad decision and almost got discovered or almost let a toy get lost, so he goes to Woody for advice. Woody advises him to listen to his inner voice, and Buzz at his low point takes it literally. What should have happened at that point is every time he just slavishly listens to his voice recordings it should make the situation worse, and at the end he finally realizes he has to make his own decisions. They *almost* did that when he fakes his voice line at the end about Bonnie's backpack, but they don't contextualize that as an actual character moment since Buzz is just relegated to comic relief the whole time.
@@hunterolaughlin If there had to be a 4th movie with Bo I would have it so Bo and Forky are the main characters who go on an adventure to find Bonnie when Forky is left behind in an antique shop by mistake and throughout the movie Forky learns what it means to be a toy through the help of Bo Peep since she technically wasn't a toy either and was made one through a child's love. Bo would also slowly turn into the outgoing adventure girl too throughout the movie when she decides being porcelain won't hold her back anymore. After lots of stuff happening they eventually find Bonnie and all the toys reunite with Bo Peep and Forky learns to enjoy being a child's toy.

That implies to me that depending on who you are this could easily be the worst sequel Pixar has ever made, that is a solid contender for the worst Pixar sequel for many. Rockotar did also make a whole video surrounding Evelyn so if more than one sequel is on the table I guess Incredibles 2 can be a contender as well. I feel like that’s less likely though because that video probably would have just been a segment in a full length unholy trinity video.
It definitely won’t be Incredibles 2. I think Rockotar gave it a 1.5/5 on Letterboxd (might have even been 2/5, I don’t remember). Toy Story 4 on the other hand he gave a 0.5/5. Judging from his Letterboxd, I believe the other two will be Lightyear and Turning Red (I think I even recall Rockotar calling Turning Red his least favourite movie of all time on Reddit but don’t quote me on that).
3:47 one of the biggest issues I have with her personality change is at the beginning of 2 she convinces Woody that he is Andy's toy and Andy will love him no matter what (hat or no hat). And then at the beginning of 4 she tries to convince Woody to just straight up ditch Andy and all the other toys for that ceramic strange.

This is going to be one of Rockotar’s more divisive videos but it is a take I do agree with myself. Toy Story 4 was a movie I enjoyed to some extent when I first saw it but it just kept getting worse and worse for me every time I rewatched it and it ultimately got to the point where the movie hit rock bottom for me. I just cannot stand this movie at all. More power to anyone who is a fan of this movie but I am not one of those people. It will be interesting to see what Toy Story 5 does although that movie is not looking promising so far. Also, everyone in this thread needs to chill. Calling people wrong/stupid for liking the movie is just uncalled for. People are allowed to like the movie and call it a quality piece of work and calling them stupid for doing so is just wrong, no matter how strongly you disagree with that take.

The way people seem to gas up Toy Story 4 almost seems reminiscent to the praise that Kingdom Hearts 3 was initially given, and, like, half the community was no longer interested on continuing the Kingdom Hearts series any further when they got to actually see how bad both the gameplay and story were (the story and Kingdom Hearts was effectively going downhill once Birth By Sleep dropped).

This movie is so insulting to who woody is as a character that I genuinely cannot believe they decided to end his story the way they did. He has been built up for 3 entire movies as someone who never gives up on his kid and always tries to keep the gang together. He learns in the first movie that being the favorite doesnt matter; its all about being there for andy. In the second movie, after being misguided by pete into almost leaving andy, learns through a clip of HIMSELF singing, that being behind a glass case is nothing compared to being there for your kid, and the years wont change that either. In the third movie, andy himself says that the reason woody is so special is "because he'll never give up on you ever. He'll be there for you, no matter what." In the fourth movie, he doesnt get played with bonnie for like 2 days and decides porcelian pussy is better than everything he has stood for. God what a joke

Bopeep is like Woody's girlfriend, Andy is like Woody's kid. Yes, Woody loves Bopeep but you'd never choose a gf over a child. Much less this one. This Bopeep was turned into an abusive, arrogant, entitled jack who goes 'it's him or me' w/ Andy. It is blatantly motivated by ideology & entitlement on behalf of the writers. It is uniquely disgusting as it is celebrating destructive behaviors. It is a celebration of selfishness, common of modern writing. The character doesn't grow to be better because the writers do not think she did wrong in her abuses. It is completely disconnected from the audience, the consistency of the prior stories, & even moral behavior.
Honestly I liked Cars 2 better than this movie. Even if that movie has a bunch of narrative problems, I still think it’s more of an enjoyable movie than this is. Toy Story 4 made no sense to me why they made it the way they did. Also, I agree it’s the worst sequel Pixar made that I’ve seen.
Yeah like I enjoyed Mater learning to accept who is he and McQueen learning to accept Mater. Compared that to Woody’s character development being thrown down the drain.
I feel like Bo peep would hate the new version of herself, in fact I think the majority of the characters would hate their Toy Story 4 versions of themselves 😭 I don’t wanna blab too much but I really don’t like how Bo seemed so upset or even embarrassed when woody talks about how she used to comfort Molly. I feel like the previous Bo would almost get a sense of nostalgia because she knew the importance that some special toys are to children and understand Mollys depedance on Bo due to her being very little at the time To add, I liked how in Toy Story 2, woody’s main ark was abandoning Andy and the toys because he though he wouldn’t be loved forever, but on the contrary in Toy Story 3 he is not willing to leave his side even though Andy is grown up (to be fair the plot for a while was a misunderstanding but still) By the end of Toy Story three he realizes there must be a balance as a toy between being there for your owner/kid and accepting and willing to move on from them when the time comes. However everything woody and the rest learned from their expirences is thrown in the garbage here like why in the world would he even CONSIDER leaving after what he learned in the 2nd movie and Andy is still a CHILD like hello?? (Sorry for blabbing as you can tell I’m just as upset with this sequel..)

Kids are smart, and emotionally intelligent, I feel like Bonnie would understand that Andy really cared about Woody, and she would too. I never understood the 180 of her portrayal to completely discard of him.
I remembered those defending this movie and the “reason” Bonnie stopped caring is cause they argued that “she’s just a kid, she’s gonna like a toy and not play with said toy if they get bored of them or die to their short attention, she probably said yes to Andy because she wanted woody then and later forget.” like the more I heard it the more of an excuse it was to make Bonnie not care for him.
The director got inspiration from his daughter liking her Jessie doll but neglect her Woody doll in real life which explains a lot.
But here's the thing; Bonnie DIDN'T discard Woody, she just didn't play with him as much as Andy did.
There's a small segment in the "Throw Yourself Away" montage, that completely negates Woody's "Arc" of having to overcompensate not being played with, where we see Bonnie actively PLAYING with Woody and Forky.
On top of that, Woody's "Arc" is just a rehash of his arc in Toy Story 1, where he had the same dilemma of not being "The Favourite Toy" anymore.
Only in TS1, it made sense because he was with Andy for all of his childhood. He knew full well when donating himself and co. to Bonnie, that he would likely not be her #1 toy and he was FINE with that, because he had matured across TS1 and TS2
But all of a sudden, TS4 decides "Nah, he was gonna ditch everyone for Bo."
Right, okay ima stop here. Otherwhise I'll go off all night.
I didn’t have an issue with Bonnie in this way. I agree with the sentiment that children do change their minds on *their* favourite toys. It isn’t really about whether Andy valued Woody; it was about her having different favourites because she’s a kid and this happens. Nothing in the movie said she hated Woody or wanted to get rid of him; she just wasn’t playing with him as much.
My issue was Woody being dissatisfied at not being the favourite again. He already went through this arc. If it had been more about him re-evaluating where he derives happiness-making a child happy by being their toy-I don’t think Bonnie’s changing toy focus would be so divisive.
It could also have been Woody realizing that being Bonnie’s toy didn’t fill the void of him no longer being with Andy. He made a move to keep everyone together and show the cycle of toys changing to different kids, but over time, he’s realized that he doesn’t receive the same joy because this isn’t Andy. Being played with less and less just makes him aware that he’s not happy overall. He then tries to fill that void with getting Forky back to Bonnie because he sees how Forky makes her happy. And this can lead him to considering Bo’s way of living where he can find purpose elsewhere.
Honestly as much as this could've felt to mature even an idea of Bonnie wants to take care of him since he was something special to Andy makes Bonnie not play with him all the time. To avoid him getting hurt. Its's an idea for a twist to at least make something make more sense. Still wouldn't help with Woody though.

After Woody spent YEARS not being played with as Andy grew older, a few days of no attention should feel like nothing when taking account to his perception of time.
@grygoo2680 Not to mention that Toy Story 2 Andy's mum says that Woody is "an old family toy and isn't for sale." Which means Woody knows exactly what it means to go into storage, as it implies he was passed onto Andy through either his dad, mum, or grandparents.
Woody is the last character who should be having a mental breakdown over not being played with for three days, let alone being put into storage. Plus, as of the events of TS2, Woody knows he is a "one of a kind" or at least a very rare toy, he shouldn't be easily manipulated into giving up his voice box, well the motorised parts, to Gabby Gabby just so she can be "loved by a child."

He would've stuck by Bonnie til Bonnie was ready to let him go. Just as he did with Andy (albeit he gave Andy a tiny push) but to be disloyal to Bonnie in this instance is to be disloyal to Andy as well. And his friends!
Bo Peep basically replaced Jessie in this movie, except, unlike Bo, Jessie isn’t a heartless, terrible friend to Woody and the others. It also really grinds my gears that Jessie doesn’t tag along with Buzz when he goes out to rescue Woody and Forky, especially since the ending of Toy Story 3 hinted that the two of them were developing romantic feelings for one another. We got no expansion of their relationship in TS4; in fact, the movie hardly acknowledges that Buzz and Jessie had any kind of relationship to begin with.

Jessie had a completion of her character arc in the toy story of terror; something I adore and bonus points for her and Buzz having some subtle but cute moments together.
Bo Peep could’ve been replaced by Jessie so that we can see more of the Toy Story version of the DC Trinity.
The Buzz and Jessie reset bothered me a lot.
Toy Story 5 is gonna have a story where the toys are facing challenges with technology and an army of 50 Buzz Lightyears stuck in toy mode

Bopeep originally being a gentle and graceful character made a lot of sense considering she's made of porcelain. She HAD to be careful and slow-moving to not risk breaking, and that care and elegance became reflected in her personality. It's pretty genius character writing.
New Bo is the complete opposite: Reckless, fast-paced, arrogant, and smart-mouthed. I see the writers were trying to go for a "this character is fierce and leaps at danger in-spite of how fragile she is" approach and that's not necessarily a bad thing. But it's not Bopeep anymore. Not the one Woody was in love with anyways.
Let's be real. The writers never considered that porcelin is fragile, exhibit A: the sheep not f-ing dying
And there is a super simple fix to this, make a new character. Make a porcelain doll character that is extremely reckless to a dangerous degree.
Also with Bo and Jessie together you had the graceful feminine lady and the rough and tough tomboy. Now they shaft Jessie, the bloody tomboy, to make Bo a girlboss… what the hell Pixar!?
They could’ve made Bo still girly and feminine but also badass. She didn’t need an entire girlboss personality change.

Changing Bo Peep’s dress could have been so cool. Imagine if she still had the porcelain one at the beginning, only for Woody to find out later that it shattered unintentionally or otherwise.

There could still be sharp fragments underneath that she could be insecure about, or maybe she grew to resent her former life and wanted to take back control? There are so many possibilities but NOPE, let’s just retcon her former design I guess…
Yeah I think thats the part that annoys me the most. They CAN put in the effort and write her changes to work. I truly believe it could had worked, but it felt like they didn’t tried.

Toy Story 4 is like Kung Fu Panda 4. Unnecessary with main characters we wanted to see completely sidelined. One side duo being remotely funny carrying the movie. Also character assassination all around. Also Dog water villain.
Kung Fu Panda 4 actually had a build up to it, though, even if not executed properly. Po becoming the spiritual leader of the Valley of Peace really WAS set up by Oogway giving him the staff and pretty much outright saying Po was meant to be his successor at the end of Kung Fu Panda 3, just like Po's biological father returning was set up for Kung Fu Panda 3 at the end of Kung Fu Panda 2.
And Po needing to train a successor or think about it isn't really a bad idea. Also, the idea of Po encountering this area of China where they hadn't even heard of him as the Dragon warrior and all was NEEDED. He was really starting to get highstrung with "look how cool I am. I'm the dragon warrior. Let me give you my autograph!" as can be seen in Kung Fu Panda 2, among other places. And Zhen being the unlikely successor also fits. I mean, Po doesn't scream "dragon warrior" at first glance and Zhen doesn't scream "next in line". So it fits.
Now what was more a bad idea was that they had it so that he couldn't be the Dragon Warrior anymore. I didn't know that you couldn't be if you were the spiritual leader of the valley of peace. And while Chameleon did look cool and all with her sorcery, the worst thing she did was steal the staff thingy (which she had Zhen do) and knock a guy down the stairs. Tai Lung rampaged the valley of peace and took out all those guards when broke out of prison. Shen genocided a bunch of pandas. And Kai was a general and also turned a bunch of the good guys into jade zombies and destroyed the Jade Palace and nearly got Po.
Toy Story 3 showed no inkling that a Toy Story 4 was coming or needed. Also, it's been stated for a while by the makers of Kung Fu Panda that they had ALWAYS, or for years and years, intended there to be six movies in total in the franchise.
Tai Lung wasn't really character assassinated. (Also, Po saved him already, in a bizarre way. If you look closely in Kung Fu Panda 3, you can see that, among the masters in the spirit world that Kai took the chi from was TAi Lung's.) Shen was, and Kai shouldn't still be around.
Kung Fu Panda 4 is definitely the weakest of the franchise, but it's not a pure cash grab that had no inkling of even happening from its predecessor, unlike Toy Story 4.

Pretty much. Both have potential, but it was clearly mismanaged and just became cashgrabs. I think at the very least Kung Fu Panda 4 treated its cast better than Toy Story 4, but only because the half-baked ones were the new ones, rather than going out of their way of changing the established ones.
Toy Story 4 did NOT need to exist. The ending to 3 was perfect but now it feels ruined.

Megamind Vs the Doom Syndicate was just a pilot episode for the awful Megamind series. It’s not a sequel. Also, Despicable Me 2 ending in a perfect way is surprising, as I felt like Despicable Me 3’s ending would’ve ended the main Despicable Me films.

I'm just tired of the "girl-bossification" of female characters. And ofc Gabby Gabby, had to be "redeemed, because we can't have a "negative" female role model for little girls. 😅
Seriously though and I really wish that corporations like this would realize that no one wants these girlboss characters and we would be much happier if they just left their pre-existing female characters alone instead of trying to do this feminism move that they clearly don't get.
I don't hate Gabby Gabby being redeemable because it feels like Woody being able to stop another Lotso type villain from coming into the world. Lotso went bad because he had no one to show him compassion when he was at his lowest point, and Woody had the opportunity to do that for Gabby. The issue is they didn't frame it like that, they just redeemed her without her ever taking accountability.
To quote Richard Nixon, when a woman kidnaps and guilt trips another person into giving up a piece of themselves to serve their own needs and never apologizes for it:

29:16 Interestingly enough, they've actually done this exact thing before. The original voice actor for Slinky, Jim Varney, died a few months after Toy Story 2 released. In Toy Story 3, Slinky's role was given to Varney's close friend Blake Clark, and he has been voicing him ever since.
They very well could've looked for someone else to voice Mr. Potato Head but they didn't.

Another interesting fact is that Blake Clark co-stared with Buzz's voice actor Tim Allen in Home Improvement.
Fun fact: Toy Story 2 wasn’t Jim Varney’s final voice role before his sudden passing. Disney’s “Atlantis: The Lost Empire” (which was being worked on at the same time till it released in 2001) where he voiced the short old guy was actually his actual final voice role.
Tho unless if we’re being consistent with his timeline, maybe he voiced the old guy in ATLE first (due to the the movie still being stuck in production hell) before voicing Slinky again for his final role in Toy Story 2 which released in 1999.

The girl bossification of Bo Peep is so pandering to me and probably the most forced feature in modern Disney movies. It's like the studio is trying to atone for their past by forcing existing characters into this bad ass, quirky girl stereotype. It's insulting. A female character can be "strong" without dropping sassy remarks and kicking ass. It's okay to be gentle and flirty.
Plus, we already have a character like this. JESSIE! And she is infinitely better in terms of writing, because while she's tough and edgy, that isn't all she is. She's scrappy, but kind. Fearless, but vulnerable, etc, etc. Bo just feels like an insincere apology from Disney. There's no reason for this film to exist
Exactly. My problem with the new Bo isn't the fact that she's some survivalist agile girl boss, my problem with it is how *everything* about her in the movie is basically trying to gas light us into thinking "this is _always_ who Bo was, this is who Woody fell in love with, shut up!" or "See? Bo isn't just some meek defenseless woman, she's got CHARACTER! Love us!"
There's something I realized that not a lot of people talk about. If they wanted to go with this forced narrative of Woody feeling down because he's not played with enough, why didn't he go to Sunnyside Daycare? Not only did he admit that it's a nice place despite his concerns about Andy in the previous movie and not only are there plenty of children there, but he wouldn't even have to completely abandon his friends since Bonnie's mother works there. That means that Woody could still be visited by his friends if they could hitch a ride with Bonnie's mom and he could have some familiar faces to talk to.

For the ending to even occur requires Woody to do something in complete contradiction to himself in the three previous movies, Bo Peep to be likable in this one (she isn’t), and that Bonnie wouldn’t be hurt by this (something not even entirely clear in the fourth film and definitely not true if the third film is taken into consideration). It’s fine if you enjoy it. I’m just not sure I can trust your evaluation of solid given the contradictions between this movie’s end and its predecessors.

Toy Story 5 really can't pull a Shrek 4 considering that unlike Shrek 3, TS4 ended with a major status quo change. Also in the D23 concept art for TS5 Forky is with the gang and Jessie is still wearing Woody's badge.

Shrek Forever After *didn’t* retcon the first 3 movies, they still happened, it was only a certain villain (who had already appeared in the previous movie as a very different-looking character btw) who was retconned into the series.
When I first watched the film, I enjoyed it. But I didn’t like the ending. As we were walking out of the theater I jokingly told my parents there should be a Toy Story 5.
That aged well.
I liked only one thing out of this whole movie. The sequences with Forky and Woody in which Forky keeps rejoining the trash. It's cute, but the rest of this movie doesn't even feel like its in the same universe as the other 3.

Honestly, I much prefer this tear down rather than the 6 hour one. Its less preachy, less usage of multiple clips (especially the avatar ones), and less nitpicky and just goes straight in without any unnessesary negativity. But the fact both of these videos point out the same exact problems about this movie just proves its pure flawed writing and assassination.

I am so tired of the argument that claims that "Toy Story 4 is 'Woody's ending.'" Woody already got a happy ending in the previous film! He moved on from Andy successfully and gained new friends and a child who adored him. He could be loyal to a child and have his family with him. There was nothing to improve upon.
Edit: 17:36 I love this concept so much. My TS4 replacement fan fiction focused heavily on this. Even when they're not being played with, they can still help kids. It was so easy to see, but Pixar still missed it.
“Most Insulting Sequel”, is what I would call it.
I have found myself disliking this more and more upon rewatching the original trilogy. I just can’t get around why so many of our favorite characters are completely regressed/useless/out of character.
Woody: Is completely going against what he stood so firmly against in TS3 as he tried to convince everyone that Andy cared about them, going as far as to leave them at Sunnyside for Andy, but when he finds out about Lotso, he doesn’t hesitate to rescue his friends, his family and bring them home. The ending is perfect too, because he realizes how he would be safe in Bonnie’s hands with his friends, but only with Andy’s blessing. TS4 completely regresses on this and it’s like if in TS2, Woody had decided to go to the museum, it’s completely backwards for his character development considering how poorly Bo treats him and talks to him. It’s as if the message is like “Yeah leave your family and best friends to go with your ex that treats you like garbage and you haven’t seen in 9 years.”
Buzz: Buzz’s character in TS4 makes me want to break something. He’s completely stupid with the whole inner voice thing, to which he has always known what a conscience is, and is capable of making decisions on his own. He is one De Facto co leader/strongman the group. In TS1, Buzz is ignorant rather than stupid, as he clearly has common sense and survival skills. TS2 is peak Buzz IMO as he literally tracks down Woody using a feather and license plate, and he leads the rest of the toys. When he gets tied up in the box, he escapes and finds a way out and follows them. He also calls out Woody for what he was doing and literally brings their friendship full circle when he tells him that Woody taught him the importance of being there for your kid. Also in the beginning when Woody gets stolen, and in the Climax, Buzz does not think twice in rescuing Woody and Jessie, because he knows how important being there for your friends/kid is. In TS3 Buzz intelligence and innovation is also shown in the first act of the movie until he gets switched to demo mode. EVEN THEN, he’s shown to be intelligent knowing when to call for backup/use tools at his disposal. And after at the dump when he gets switched back, HES STILL HIS SAME OLD SELF, telling the toys to grab something magnetic to avoid the shredder. In the climax, he knows that this is the end. When Jessie asks him what they should do, he takes her hand, knowing that this is their end, but he will die with those he loves. (A side note but I’m pissed that there was basic no moments of Buzz x Jessie in TS4 after their feelings were strongly hinted at in TS3 and the shorts) Overall Buzz is not stupid nor timid, but TS4 assassinated him ruthlessly.
Jessie: I also hate what they did to Jessie in TS4. In the beginning when they’re in Bonnie’s closet, they show her hyperventilating which really doesn’t make sense. Yes she had her trauma of claustrophobia and abandonment, but she’s been shown to be in way tighter/darker spaces without a problem, like the TS3 toy box. Also she has her friends there for her, so she would feel safe with them, as her trauma mainly is shown from her being alone and in the dark, which she been shown to overcome partially in TS of terror. Another thing, Jessie is shown as brave and adventurous and also a leader. In TS3, she leads the Sunnyside escape while Woody is taking care of the monkey and Buzz is against them. In TS4, when Buzz leaves the van, she and the other toys stay there, which is out of character for her. The Jessie we know would have gone with Buzz to help save woody for the adventure and because she cares. She also did nothing basically in TS4 aside popping the tyre, which again makes no sense given her character. She also deeply cares for her friends and owners. In TS3, she suggests Sunnyside because she wants the best for her friends at a new home. But upon finding out Andy still cares for them, she without hesitation tells them they need to go back. She’s also responsible, as she admits how she was reckless for leading them to Sunnyside. In the climax she doesn’t hesitate to jump in the dumpster to save woody from Lotso, and stands up to Lotso calling him out, as well being the first to try to help buzz from under the TV. Jessie in TS2-TS3 is the perfect example of how to write an awesome female character without making them into a gaslighting, toxic feminist(Bo peep).
The rest of the toys are completely sidelined too but I think that’s obvious. I just hope Toy Story 5 can make a good comeback, and I have higher hopes as Andrew Stanton is directing it, but only time will tell.

Jesse- made claustrophobic again after she got over it in Toy Story of terror

I figured Bo Peep was just doing playful banter with Woody, considering she has a more hardened personality. She seemed genuinely happy to reunite with Woody, and she knows the area more than him, so she takes the lead for the most part.
Calling Bo Peep abusive is a wild claim. That line is so obviously banter, and at worst she's downplaying him because he's in a domain he has zero experience with.
That said, I don't hate that Jesse was dealing with claustrophobia again. Yeah, she pushed through it before but also: You can still be uncomfortable and panicky about it. She seemed far more in control of it compared to before in this movie when I watched it so I think that's a plus for the movie actually. I'm not hit by my arachnophobia as hard but I still have that unease and a spider surprising me will put me on edge for a while with paranoia.

@@LadyLeomon When Buzz Lightyear has his "Andy" written on his foot, he tells the toys that he has been accepted into their culture, since he thinks he is in an alien planet so in he's mind he's just trying to respect their culture. The toys might have explained him that where they live, they freeze when humans are around, so he tries to do that as he is trying to respect their culture and the way they do things around there.
That's one of the more logical explanations. The other main one is that it is just an instinct the toys have when humans are around, but if that were true, then why would Woody call unfreezing when a human is present "breaking the rules" and be able to do so? It's also evident that toys are aware when they are frozen so if Buzz Lightyear just had an "instinct", then logically he should be able to freak out and move like Woody was able to do, revealing him being alive. So that theory probably isn't it. I hope I helped you.

as a woman I hate the fact every single female character now gets reworked into a “girlboss” archetype. its weird to teach little girls that the only valuable and cool way to be a woman is being a sarcastic kickass. just once I’d like to see a female character reworked keeping her old traits and just expanding on them in interesting ways
That actually ties to the way Hollywood in general treats female characters almost always , either girl boss who does no wrong and completely stoic , or girliest girl who is the love interest
I genuinly love it when a girly character can be badass aswell as deep , or a stoic girl boss who can see her issues or has to overcome problems and herself
What sucks is that even though this film has some haters, it has good reviews and people seem to generally consider it a good film. I DESPISE this movie. It assassinates the characters, has so many inconsistencies, ruins the most perfect and heartfelt trilogy, and so much more. It almost would have been fine that this movie was so terrible if it was universally hated as well but I see it get defended ALL THE TIME. It’s painful to see as someone who grew up with the franchise and cried at the ACTUAL finale (which was literally intended to be the absolute end of their story)
The story by itself, honestly isn't the worst thing ever. The problem is that at this point in the Toy Story canon, it should not have been a Toy Story movie. It ret-cons so much that it feels like a huge backpedal for the series.
Pretty much my opinion on The Last Jedi and why that movie frustrates me.
It would have kind of been ripping off the second movie, but I feel like it might have been a little interesting if the Bo Peep for most of the movie was a different Bo Peep? Like Woody didn't realize that Bo wasn't literally one of a kind and had to deal with accepting that this wasn't the Bo he knew despite looking just like her?
The trinity is probably Wreck it Ralph 2, Incredibles 2, and Toy Story 4

Well there’s 2 reasons they used archive recordings of the late Don Rickles for Toy Story 4.
1. Don’s family personally requested the studio to use his voice in the film, so Pixar was honoring his family’s wishes.
2. You know how hard it is to find a convincing Don Rickles impersonator? It doesn’t help that the character’s become associated with Don Rickles that it’s hard thinking of anyone else in the role. Sure, Slinky was recast, but do people really associate Jim Varney in the role as they do with Rickles and Mr. Potato Head? I think Jim would be more associated with Ernest P. Worrell than with Slinky Dog.

And 2. I think Maurice LaMarche could’ve done a good Don Rickles impression, so they could’ve hired him to voice Mr. Potato Head in Toy Story 4. Or, they could’ve removed Potato Head entirely, since they removed Chuckles the Clown because Bud Lucky passed away, even though Pixar got Jonathon Banks to play Rick Dicker (another character Bud played).

Jim Varney played Slinky originally, and he passed away after Toy Story 2. So naturally, Slinky was recast.

I still cannot believe I didn't *hate* this movie when I first watched it.
This is honestly my least favorite Pixar movie of all time (I know there are worse movies but they don't count in my mind).
The fact that there's still some good new animated movies makes it even worse with how horribly this film failed. I know because I’ve seen movies like Inside Out 2 and Wild Robot so there's no reason for Toy Story 4 to be as awful as it was. The only way I can still enjoy the original Toy Story trilogy is by completely ignoring this movie exists same thing with SpongeBob I can only enjoy the classic episodes by simply pretending the new episodes don’t exist.
Don't feel bad when I first watched it and when I first watched Ralph breaks the internet I didn't think it was that bad either until I've gotten older.
And I'm noticing the same thing with Moana 2 where watching it for the first time I felt like it wasn't bad but now maybe a month later I still wouldn't consider it bad but I definitely wouldn't consider it a good sequel AND NOT NEARLY AS BAD AS TOY STORY 4.

I have watched toy story 3 as a child like a lot of time. It was my most rewatched cartoon for me. When I watched the 4th movie I sat for about five minutes in complete silence like my fucking childhood was shitted on. Basically all they did was tick the box for that character trait when making this movie which completely destroys her character because they go about it in the worst way possible. If the person I was in love with treated me the way Bo treats Woody I would have left and never come back.

Good video mate! I found this to be a more straight forward and less tedious critique at TS4 than THAT 6 hour video. I appreciate you focusing heavily on the character assasinations and how it contradicts the OG trilogy. With this being the same length as the film instead of being four times the length.
Personally, I consider the Pixar Unholy Trinity to be TS4, Lightyear and Incredibles 2. I don't hate Cars 2, Brave, The Good Dinosaur and Turning Red as much as everyone else does, and Cars 2 actually respects the consistency of the characters unlike TS4, plus its events were retconned in Cars 3. I know Cars 2 is heavily flawed but I have somewhat of a soft spot for it since 7 year old me was obsessed with that film.

-Buzz becomes stupid because the movie cant find an excuse to make him dumb (like atleast he had reason to be dumb. In 1, he was a new toy, in 2, he was replaced by an anti-gravity belt buzz, and in 3. was switched to demo mode by Lotso)
-Woody dumps all of his character development in the first 3 films because Bo peep
-people are extremely stupid (like when the toys were sabotaging the van, and how people believed that the skunk car was real, which you can argue that in the 1st movie, Hannah was also gullible when Woody was pretending to be her Mom, but Hannah's a child. In this movie, ITS LITERAL ADULTS)
-Bonnie prefers to play with literal rubbish rather than her other toys
-Andy will most likely get mad at Bonnie for losing Woody (Even though its entirely Woody's fault because like i said, Bo peep)

I don't get your4th poiny, I mesn they're a kid and they made something, of course she's gonna play with a toy that she made and be very proud of it even if it was made with literal garbage
To your first point it could have been so much better if Buzz had some sort of issue with his self confidence, maybe he made a bad decision and almost got discovered or almost let a toy get lost, so he goes to Woody for advice. Woody advises him to listen to his inner voice, and Buzz at his low point takes it literally.
What should have happened at that point is every time he just slavishly listens to his voice recordings it should make the situation worse, and at the end he finally realizes he has to make his own decisions. They *almost* did that when he fakes his voice line at the end about Bonnie's backpack, but they don't contextualize that as an actual character moment since Buzz is just relegated to comic relief the whole time.
They should have never brought back Bo Peep like this and kept Forky's introduction as a pixar short.
How would you bring back Bo Peep if you were to reintroduce her to the series and to a new generation?
@@hunterolaughlin If there had to be a 4th movie with Bo I would have it so Bo and Forky are the main characters who go on an adventure to find Bonnie when Forky is left behind in an antique shop by mistake and throughout the movie Forky learns what it means to be a toy through the help of Bo Peep since she technically wasn't a toy either and was made one through a child's love. Bo would also slowly turn into the outgoing adventure girl too throughout the movie when she decides being porcelain won't hold her back anymore. After lots of stuff happening they eventually find Bonnie and all the toys reunite with Bo Peep and Forky learns to enjoy being a child's toy.

That implies to me that depending on who you are this could easily be the worst sequel Pixar has ever made, that is a solid contender for the worst Pixar sequel for many. Rockotar did also make a whole video surrounding Evelyn so if more than one sequel is on the table I guess Incredibles 2 can be a contender as well. I feel like that’s less likely though because that video probably would have just been a segment in a full length unholy trinity video.
It definitely won’t be Incredibles 2. I think Rockotar gave it a 1.5/5 on Letterboxd (might have even been 2/5, I don’t remember). Toy Story 4 on the other hand he gave a 0.5/5. Judging from his Letterboxd, I believe the other two will be Lightyear and Turning Red (I think I even recall Rockotar calling Turning Red his least favourite movie of all time on Reddit but don’t quote me on that).

3:47 one of the biggest issues I have with her personality change is at the beginning of 2 she convinces Woody that he is Andy's toy and Andy will love him no matter what (hat or no hat). And then at the beginning of 4 she tries to convince Woody to just straight up ditch Andy and all the other toys for that ceramic strange.
This movie got infected with the "Ralph Breaks the Internet" virus. Confused plotlines, wasted characters, ruined characters, unfunny jokes, complete 180s, it has it all!

This is going to be one of Rockotar’s more divisive videos but it is a take I do agree with myself. Toy Story 4 was a movie I enjoyed to some extent when I first saw it but it just kept getting worse and worse for me every time I rewatched it and it ultimately got to the point where the movie hit rock bottom for me. I just cannot stand this movie at all.
More power to anyone who is a fan of this movie but I am not one of those people. It will be interesting to see what Toy Story 5 does although that movie is not looking promising so far.
Also, everyone in this thread needs to chill. Calling people wrong/stupid for liking the movie is just uncalled for. People are allowed to like the movie and call it a quality piece of work and calling them stupid for doing so is just wrong, no matter how strongly you disagree with that take.

The way people seem to gas up Toy Story 4 almost seems reminiscent to the praise that Kingdom Hearts 3 was initially given, and, like, half the community was no longer interested on continuing the Kingdom Hearts series any further when they got to actually see how bad both the gameplay and story were (the story and Kingdom Hearts was effectively going downhill once Birth By Sleep dropped).

Seriously, the secret to a good sequel and a good TV series in general, is CONSISTENCY! If you're going to add to a story, make sure it actually works with the original story. Sheesh.
Far as I'm concerned, this movie was Buzz's nightmare, and the Lightyear movie was Woody's.
This movie is so insulting to who woody is as a character that I genuinely cannot believe they decided to end his story the way they did.
He has been built up for 3 entire movies as someone who never gives up on his kid and always tries to keep the gang together.
He learns in the first movie that being the favorite doesnt matter; its all about being there for andy.
In the second movie, after being misguided by pete into almost leaving andy, learns through a clip of HIMSELF singing, that being behind a glass case is nothing compared to being there for your kid, and the years wont change that either.
In the third movie, andy himself says that the reason woody is so special is "because he'll never give up on you ever. He'll be there for you, no matter what."
In the fourth movie, he doesnt get played with bonnie for like 2 days and decides porcelian pussy is better than everything he has stood for. God what a joke
Hey, in Woody's defense, it was actually THREE days without playtime. So, ya know, it makes sense that Woody would turn his back on everyone he has ever loved.

Bopeep is like Woody's girlfriend, Andy is like Woody's kid. Yes, Woody loves Bopeep but you'd never choose a gf over a child. Much less this one.
This Bopeep was turned into an abusive, arrogant, entitled jack who goes 'it's him or me' w/ Andy. It is blatantly motivated by ideology & entitlement on behalf of the writers. It is uniquely disgusting as it is celebrating destructive behaviors. It is a celebration of selfishness, common of modern writing. The character doesn't grow to be better because the writers do not think she did wrong in her abuses.
It is completely disconnected from the audience, the consistency of the prior stories, & even moral behavior.
And the Bonnie of toy story 4 turned out to be neglectful, deceitful, whiny and unlikable little brat who never deserved Woody (OR Buzz and the gang)
Honestly I liked Cars 2 better than this movie. Even if that movie has a bunch of narrative problems, I still think it’s more of an enjoyable movie than this is. Toy Story 4 made no sense to me why they made it the way they did. Also, I agree it’s the worst sequel Pixar made that I’ve seen.

To add, I liked how in Toy Story 2, woody’s main ark was abandoning Andy and the toys because he though he wouldn’t be loved forever, but on the contrary in Toy Story 3 he is not willing to leave his side even though Andy is grown up (to be fair the plot for a while was a misunderstanding but still) By the end of Toy Story three he realizes there must be a balance as a toy between being there for your owner/kid and accepting and willing to move on from them when the time comes. However everything woody and the rest learned from their expirences is thrown in the garbage here like why in the world would he even CONSIDER leaving after what he learned in the 2nd movie and Andy is still a CHILD like hello?? (Sorry for blabbing as you can tell I’m just as upset with this sequel..)
I agree! TS1 and TS2 Bo Peep would be like, "Why would someone talk in such a condescending way to Woody?" And she would be shocked that it's her future self.
Music choices were more remote but also pretty abstract for their franchises. Chance time caught me so off guard with the whole character assassination wheel bit. Hilarious with your refined choices of reaction clips. Video itself was also good of course. Was wondering when your next upload would be.
The more time passes, the more I realize the sequel isn’t as great as I thought it was when I first watched it in theatres.
I hate what they do to Woody here. Everyone constantly talks down to him and the movie acts like he's a burden to the other toys. It's so disrespectful to the first 3.
As a person who ADORED buzz and Jessie’s interractions in Toy Story 3, this movie stomped that out
