    Great review/video on the Fitty inch! Just picked one up.... The bigger ones are cooler, but probably 80% of the trails in my area are for 50" or less ATV's

    Very well done! I guess I don't feel so bad now about our 2013 800. We've got 2,000 miles on it, most of that on gravel or pavement. But we don't have the luck to live where you do with so many trails, either.
    Replaced the battery last year (they aren't cheap), but it was 5 years old, so I was happy. I keep it on a battery tender all the time, even in the summer, which contributed to the longevity.
    Replaced the belt twice, but never had a failure. Changed the oil 3 times in six years (shame on me), but that's like an oil change every 700 miles, so...
    I don't drive it hard, but it's scuffed and scraped. I got it up to 50 once and that was enough for us. We keep it at 35 mph max now. Mine doesn't have near the squeaks yours does, but you've really gotten your money's worth out of yours, too.
    I have a friend who has the same model and year as mine, and I think he has less than 200 miles on it. But it for the hunting camp, and rarely uses it except for deer season here.
    All in all, the 800 has been a good workhorse, tool, and mostly fun toy for us. We love it.
    Thanks for a really nice overview. I enjoyed watching it.

    Another great review, the one thing I did to both my wife's and mine after my wife's voltage regulator failed about 30 miles from the truck was move the voltage regulators to the firewall mounted on a ceramic heat sic . I really worried about the voltage regulator down in front of that left rear tire. I agree with you that they are one really good machine.

    I’ve got an identical machine, now I know what tires to get. I did add a Tusk skid plate, half the price of the factory one but much better coverage and it is slightly thicker. Great video, both this and the one on the Tusk tires.

  • @acstorm07
    @acstorm07 6 років тому +6

    Ditch that stock skid plate and get an aftermarket one. Something like the tusk. It provides a lot more coverage and does not have those hard edges to catch on objects that you are sliding over. As for the plastic rocker panels, the same thing happened to mine. I ended up cutting mine on about a 90* angle at the front to eliminate the broken corner.
    Nice machine, by the way, it looks just like mine.

    • @blfjr2005

      Just had that happen to someone on are group ride, they got hung up on a skinny stump and folded the skid plate up, ripped the rubber hose off the coolant lines and made some nice grooves on his tas tank.

      I am having a pretty significant driveline sound that my local dealer can't diagnose. I had the front diff rebuilt, the CV joints are recent but the clutch is original. I have to replace the secondary clutch "balls" about every 2 years but they were just replaced so I think I may have finally encountered something expensive LOL.

    Appreciate the video. I've got a '20 900 with a similar setup from the Terrabites to the rear roll cage extension / spare tire carrier.
    It's definitely a noisy ride in general, especially the engine noise (reality of the tiny trail models that put the exhaust can right behind your head)
    Getting ready to trade up to a full sized liter ride once I can sell it; we don't have many 50" trails out in the Rockies at all, and I have quads for them when they pop up.
    Cheers!

    I drove on a fifty inch trail.. and was motor cycle also.. anyway was heading down a crevice(sloping down hill) and a tree root was sticking out
    and caught my rear atv 350 grizzly plastic panel.. yes it gave a rip of two inches.. basically I was locked in that space.. moved forward and crack.. Darn
    another ride on another trail a big tree branch I thought would clear while I moving along the trail.. it caught the same crack panel area..
    now a bigger crack.. Darn.... other panel accidents occurred.. Bottom line replace the panels.. after 10 yrs use 3k miles. and basically no repairs.

    Thanks for the great tips on maintenance items. I have a red 2016 Trail and love it. I added half the metal blade cover from a cheap room fan to protect my radiator after seeing it in a video and it's working great. Have you re-greased your wheel bearings?. After seeing some of the videos about people having problems with them, I bought one of the on vehicle wheel bearing greasers and it took over 20 pumps of murine grade grease!

      I haven't done the wheel bearings. They were pretty good last time I inspected them. They're not actually supposed to need grease during their life. I just replaced the suspension bushings though. Check out my new video.

    Just wondering if you have had any problems with your charging circuit , stator, reg regulator or wiring. I have 2 of these machines and both of them have had issues with failures and melt downs. Polaris is not much help. The fourth time I bought 2 of the new Rick's regulators from my dealer. This time the regulators survived the melt down. I am ready to hard wire the stator and regulator into the circuit and eliminate all the connectors. I respect your knowledge and input, I would love to get your thoughts on this matter.

    Excellent video! I have a '16 trail and love it! I try to grease every 1-2 rides. I feel like i find most of the zergs, around 14 but I feel like I am missing some. I heard there is one under the machine that is tough to get to. Manual is not too clear. Do you have a video showing ALL grease points on the 900 trail? Thanks.

    • @ramblingadventures
      @ramblingadventures  5 років тому

      I don't have a video but there are two on the center axle. One of them requires removing the center console (which is why it's a good idea to buy a pack of the fasteners because they easily break). The other is where the central axle comes out from the rear differential. That one can be seen if you look carefully and doesn't require any disassembly. The frequency is in the manual...it's not all that often they need grease. Next time I do it, I'll make a little video. To take the center console off, remove the seats then remove the shift knob (pry the cap off with a thin screwdriver and it's held on with a torx bolt) and pop all the plastic fasteners out. The boots for the seatbelts and shfter can be wrestled out of the way. I bought a 100 pack of those fasteners just because they can get messed up. You'll see the zerk fitting on the slip joint of the axle. Theoretically you're supposed to use a different grease for the axle. Polaris has a general purpose grease and an axle/CV grease.

      In a later video, I replaced ALL the bushings with uprated ones. Though it helped, it didn't eliminate the noises.Some of the stuff just seems to have been built in! I was jealous of my friend's new 1000 Rock and Trail in that it had no grease points in the whole suspension and everything was heim jointed.

    Love your Vids! Wondering if you could comment on you spare tire carrier. I just purchased the cab frame extension kit identical to yours. Ive been reading some good and bad reviews on the spare tire carrier from polaris. What are your thoughts on that product?

    • @ramblingadventures
      @ramblingadventures  5 років тому

      It's generally a good product but it rattles like crazy. My friend has one too and the pins that are designed to make it removable or able to be "swung aside" can't be so tight they don't pull out so it sets up a lot of rattling. We figured that we rarely do swing it or remove it so we put bolts and nuts in place of the pins and that shut it right up. The only other thing I'd recommend is buy a good bike security cable and "tie" the spare to the frame if you leave the RZR anywhere where people can get at it. I use a combination lock version. The tire is held on with a hand-tighten piece so someone could walk away with your wheel/tire.

    • @M_L_N_W

      FYI and others... a person with knowledge of "locksporting" (yes it is a sport) can open most combination locks within a minute or less. Most Master locks you buy in Walmart or Target, etc. can be open within seconds. I pick locks as a hobby. I tell my kids if they ever put me in a nursing home I'll pick my way out... Since I live in Prescott, I got the Prescott National Forest trails atlas and did some research. I live adjacent to many trails so just have to drive a couple of minutes to access trail systems so spent a lot of time exploring. There is a book out there that most off-road related stores have (Guide to Arizona Backroads and 4-Wheel-Drive Trails 2nd Edition) that has a good overview of the most popular trails and riding areas and once you get into it, you tend to meet people and find out smaller trails from there.

    So, you've had those new tires for a few months now, how do you like them ? I just ordered a set for my Maverick Trail but haven't had a chance to mount them up yet.

    • @ramblingadventures
      @ramblingadventures  6 років тому +2

      I still like them. They only negatives are 1. They effectively stiffened the spring rate (since there is less flex in the tires), 2. They seem to have hurt the fuel mileage by a couple of miles per gallon and 3. They got noisier at high speed as they wore-in than they were when they were new. But I feel like I can go over rocks with impunity (I did some rock crawling going to "Smiley rock" in the Mingus mountains that would have been risky on the stock tires) and effectively raised my speed on all the rocky trails around here because I don't have to be so careful about getting punctures. I still prefer the handling with these tires (and tire sizes). They seem to be wearing pretty well though they get a bit chewed up by pavement driving. I'm interested to see how they do in snow but have to wait quite a while for that!

      Interesting question. First of all you're going to need DOT tires because the off-road tires won't last more than a few hundred miles on-road. The Tusk Terrabites I use are DOT and wear well. How long the thing will last is impossible to say. I have no engine issues at all. The troubles I'm having are the suspension and driveline parts wearing out from off-roading and not so much from on-roading. Keep in mind though, this machine on its best day on flat ground can juuuuust hit 65mph. Realistically it can't sustain more than about 55mph so that limits where it can drive. Do the maintenance regularly, use stock air filters and who knows? I have about 7,500 miles on mine now and have some clutch issues but it's done PLENTY of hard off-road so that's still a long life for those components.
